ITunes file location lost

Hi, I have basically three parts to my problem that I need info on.
1. I have a mapped drive on the network where .MP3 files are. I temorarily disconnected the mapped drive then re-connected it. iTunes then gave an error about it could not open the folder library or something to that affect. That has me baffled. Why would it no longer be able to use the files?
2. Also, to get iTunes to work again, I went to files/Add folders to Library, and then I opened the mapped drive and highlighted all the folders and hit ok. It brought them back in but duplicated them all so I am having to manually delete about 200 duplicates. Why did that happen? Should I have re-added them a different way?
3. Finally, after they are loaded back into the Library, it spent about 5 hours converting them into .aac file format. Is that necessary?
Thanks. I obviously am lost here and appreciate your help.

Thanks so much for the info. This helps alot but I have a couple fo followups. When you say "
Any files on the disconnected path will be assumed to be missing until you connect the drive and restart iTunes." I had disconnected the network "maooed" drive in Windows by accident. Igave the message, something to the effect that it could not locate the files. I simply reconnected the mapped drive, restarted the PC and got the same error when I opened iTunes. I ended up simply going to file/add folders and selected all the music files to re-add. The only reason I had mived the "My Music" folder to the network folder in the first place was in case the PC hard drive failed. I didn't want to lose all the music but the network folder is automatically backed up. Is there a better way?
Also, I don't quite understand the steps to make sure I don't keep getting duplicates and I will check out your DeDuper. Can you explain more? I don't understand what I need to do to avoid your comment "Care needs to be taken when deleting this kind of duplicate as there is only one file on the drive connected to both entries. If you delete one, and the file it is connected to, then you break the other entry."
Finally, I could not find in the preferences, or anywhere, where I can tell it not to convert the .mp3's when it adds them back to the library. Where in the world is that? I think the version being used is like 10.0.7.....
Thanks again for yout assistance. It is very much appreciated and helpful.

  • Deleting Old iTunes files w/ lost file locations

Does anyone know of a quick efficient way to take you entire iTunes library, identify which song files "original file location cannot be found", and then remove them.
I attempted to restore my library from a iPod I backed up, but no dice. Now I'm left with a ton of songs I can't play because the directory location is lost or they have that obnoxious by them. I really don't want to sort through the whole god forsaken library manually to figure out which ones are playable and which ones are not.
    Grazi,

Go to the Apple Developer's site and download the iTunes COM for Windows SDK zip file. When you unzip it there is a java script program called RemoveDeadTracks.js running this will do what you want

  • New PC, I want itunes to open up in my external hard drive (music location) but it opens in the icloud. Itunes file location is correct but it navigates to the cloud, help!

I have a new PC, Iwanted to direct itunes to my external hard drive (music location) but nothing seemed to work. I've now uninstalled and re installed itunes locating it in my external hard drive, however when I open itunes it directs itself to the icloud. I've checked the file location and it is in the external hard drive. How do I direct it to the correct place?

Setting the path to the media folder only tell iTunes where to put new content, not which library file to open. If you moved your entire library to the external drive then hold down shift as you start iTunes and browse to the iTunes Library.itl file. If you only copied the media folder you'll either need to redo the migration from your old computer, or import the media folder into a fresh library.

  • ITunes file locations

Hello. I am running iTunes on a windows 7 x64 PC, and have a question about iTunes writing files to certain hard drives. I have a SSD (C:) that I have my OS installed on, and two HDDs (D:, E:) that are used to install programs/games on, and to save media. I've installed iTunes on a HDD (D:) and have told it to save any media related information to the same hard drive. Upon looking around on the filesystem on the SSD (C:), I noticed that iTunes is trying to save album artwork, and some other stuff to this hard drive (in my C:\users\\My Music\iTunes directory) despite me telling iTunes to stay off of that drive.
I'm trying to avoid writing data to the SSD so I can prolong its life. Is there any way to completely prevent iTunes from using my SSD? I also noticed that before I had this setup, I wasn't able to get iTunes to save apps downloaded from the app store to a specific hard drive. I've gone into iTunes preferences, advanced tab, and told it to save media to a specific location, but it seems like iTunes doesn't want to use that location to save apps.
    Thanks for your help.

    Quit iTunes.
Drag the entire /Music/iTunes/ folder to another drive.
    Hold Shift and launch iTunes.
Select *Choose library* and select the iTunes folder you copied to the other drive.
iTunes will use this location from now on.

  • ITunes files locations

i have iTunes installed at G:\Programs\iTunes.
i just found some stuff at I:\Music\iTunes:
    Album Artwork
    iTunes Media
    iTunes Library Extras.itdb
    iTunes Library Genius.itdb
    iTunes Library.itl
    iTunes Music Library.xml
    sentinel
i can tell by the date/time info that iTunes is using these items. i can't find any reference to this location in iTunes preferences.
why is this stuff there and is there any way to move it back to the main iTunes location?

Here are typical layouts for the iTunes folders:
The library files plus the album artwork folder comprise the database and supporting files that together with a collection of media files make up an iTunes library. iTunes would normally put the library files in the C:\ drive, in the current users default music folder. Either you have redirected the user folder to your data backup partition at some point, or if iTunes prompted you to locate an existing library at some point, you have navigated to the backup data folder instead of the original data folder. When first installed iTunes doesn't ask where to build the library, it just does it.
You can move the folder containing your iTunes library files to any new location and it should remain connected to your media at G:\iPod. You should not however move the folder G:\iPod or change the drive letter.
Although you may have no use for the folder iTunes\iTunes Media, iTunes needs to have a designated media folder where it will create an *Automatically add to iTunes* folder (does what it says on the tin) and the iTunes Preferences.plist file. Any files that iTunes is responsible for creating, store purchases, rips, podcast downloads etc. are set out in the iTunes Media folder in the layout shown above.
I suppose you could move the I:\Music\iTunes folder to G:\Program Files\iTunes (mixed in with the app?) or G:\Program Files\iTunes\iTunes (or as a sub-folder of it?) however I would suggest the library folder is better at the root of the drive, i.e. G:\iTunes.

  • Locating files after changing iTune file location

    iTunes 7 XP Pro
I changed the default location and moved the contents of the iTunes Music folder, however iTunes does not automatically recognize the new location for existing files. Is there anyway I can globally change the location in iTunes so I do not have to change the location of hundreds of files one at a time?
    Thank you

The location you set in preference only sets the location for all FUTURE additions to the library. Anything already in your iTunes library will remain in the location they were already being accessed.
If you want to move all the files to the new location, then use the consolidate command. This command copies all files not located in the preference location into that location, thus consolidating them to one location. As I said, I think it copies, not moves the files. So after a consolidate, you may need to go and delete the old locations manually.

  • Changing iTunes File Locations

    Greetings,
This is probably a simple question that's been answered hundreds of times, but I can't seem to find it. I just want to move my music files from the "My Music" folder (and all subfolders) to a new external drive. Aside from manually moving the folders over and changing the default location setting in iTunes, is there anything else I need to do?
    Thank you in advance.

    Hi, Gary.
Have a look at this article in the Apple Knowledge Base.

  • My music files are "missing".  How do I get itunes to locate the files without identifying each music folder (files are in separate folders under torrent data and I don't want to open each one of them individually)

Just like the title...  Music files are missing and I don't want to locate each folder individually, how do I get itunes to locate all of the music without taking each music file out from the album folders they're in?

    Hi,
The article below will explain in general how your iTunes files are organized on your computer.

  • Locating broken file locations

Recently, I purchased an external hard drive because my startup disk was full due to a large music library. During the time my startup disk was full, I downloaded a bunch of songs on my iPhone. Usually, when I would startup iTunes on my Mac, the songs I downloaded using my iPhone would automatically download into my iTunes on my Mac. Since buying the external hard drive and completely moving my iTunes library to it, those files I downloaded during the "full startup disk" period say they are broken and cannot be located. How do I locate these songs and ensure they are moved into the external hard drive?

How exactly did you move your library?  Many people think they are moving their library but they only move their media, but for iTunes there is a big difference.  The exact sequence of steps you did will help in figuring out what is going on.  I am guessing you didn't really move your whole library but managed to instead move some of it at one time and leaving the other part behind.

  • Where can I find the critical iTunes files/settings -- transferring data to new HD

Hi -- I recently installed a new internal Seagate 1TB SSHD drive into my MBP 15" Late 2011 to replace the OEM 500GB internal HD.  Did a clean install with OS X Recovery.  So far so good.  But I didn't transfer over the iTunes settings + whatever files are the formats of the music I've imported into iTunes.   (due  to previous space constraints I took the actual mp3 files and put those on an external previously and just left the iTunes version of the files).
I should have all the relevant iTunes files on on backup drive -- that is I transferred all the system files to the external drive.
Would someone please let me know the names of the critical files for iTunes  -- I'd hate to have to start over and import the music and the cover art and all the rest of it!
Also if you could tell me where these files actually reside (i.e. what folders, etc).  Thanks!

You cannot put music onto your iPod without using iTunes, that what iTunes is for.
It's also not a good idea to wipe the music from your computer and having it only on your iPod. We see countless posts here from people who have done just that - and then lost everything when the iPod needs a Restore. Even if you never need to Restore your iPod, what happens when you eventually replace the iPod? You'll be back here asking how to get the music from one iPod to another. That's not easy to do, we see countless posts about that too!
A much better idea is to buy an external drive (a proper external drive, not simply an iPod) and put your large amount of music onto that drive. Then point your iTunes Library to that drive. However, you need to remember two things:
You still need a backup of that Library.
Using an external drive as your iTunes Library means that the drive must be connected and ready to read before starting your iTunes programme. If it isn't, then iTunes will look on the C: drive - and you will find no music in your Library. (Once again, lots of posts about that as well!)

  • Songfile path not writing to .itl file when iTunes Media Location is changed.

Running iTunes 11.1.4 on an Intel NUC with Windows 8.1. My iTunes library contains about 65K songfiles. All media is on a NAS.
Frequently when I restart the PC the NAS is not immediately mounted. So if I don't check this before starting up iTunes, the iTunes media folder location changes to its default.
I don't know if this is the cause of the problem, but a few days ago I started seeing a vast number of exclamation points indicating lost songfiles. All music is nicely organized in a parent folder on the NAS and iTunes had, until recently, no problem recognizing all of it.
So the other day I changed the iTunes Media Folder Location in the program from the default (which it had switched to at bootup) to the songfiles' location on the NAS. I then let the software update the library.
Still the exclamation points remained, with no discernible pattern. Within albums, some songs were recognized, some not. I'd say about two-thirds were missing, according to iTunes.
I shut down iTunes, fired up Vim, and had a look at the library's .xml file. Sure enough, about two thirds of the songfiles pointed to the default media location, with another one-third pointing correctly.
I edited the .xml file to line everything up properly, but came to find that this has no effect because the .itl file rules the roost. As soon as I started iTunes back up, the paths returned to the locations according to the .itl file, and these incorrect paths were also written to the .xml.
Updating the media folder location seems to have no effect on iTunes's ability to find the files. I know I can rebuild my library using the .xml file (presumably best done after I have changed the paths to their proper file locations), but I don't want to lose playcounts, ratings, playlists, etc.
So. It *seems* as if my .itl file is corrupt even though iTunes starts and the program is able to locate a portion of my media.
Is there something I am missing? Some way to get iTunes to recognize the proper path for all media without a library rebuild?
    TIA.

The "missing file" error happens if the file is no longer where iTunes expects to find it. Possible causes are that you or some third party tool has moved, renamed or deleted the file, or that the drive it lives on has had a change of drive letter. It is also possible thatiTunes has changed from expecting the files to be in the pre-iTunes 9 layout to post-iTunes 9 layout, or vice-versa, and so is looking in slightly the wrong place.
Select a track with an exclamation mark, use Ctrl-I to get info, then cancel when asked to try to locate the track. Look on the summary tab for the location that iTunes thinks the file should be. Now take a look around your hard drive(s). Hopefully you can locate the track in question. If a section of your library has simply been moved, or a drive letter has changed, it should be possible to reverse the actions.
If another application like Windows Media Player has moved/renamed the files then the chances are that subtle differences in naming strategies will make it hard to restore the media to the precise path that iTunes is expecting. In such cases, as long as the missing files can be found somewhere, you should be able to use my FindTracks script to reconnect them to iTunes. See this post for an explanation of how it works.
I've seen a suggestion that iTunes' own repair mechanism may work better when "Keep iTunes Media folder organized" is turned off.
See also make a split library portable. Keeping the whole library on the drive removes the problem of the media folder being reset.

  • ITunes repeatedly looses file locations of some songs

I recently had to move my music files to a new external hard drive. After getting everything moved over and changing the settings, I can now listen to import most music just fine. However, each time I try to sink my iPod, the program manages to loose about 200 songs (out of many, many more than that). Even if I individually reset the file location, the next time I synch, files are missing again. Most of the time, the files are similar, but sometimes it seems like new, random files are the ones that are lost. The files remain in their original location on the external HD, it's just that iTunes seems to have forgotten what that location was. Luckily, it seems I can still listen to my music on my iPod, and nothing is ever deleted from my HD, but it is rather annoying seeing 100 new exclamation points all the time. Any suggestions?

I have a similar issue. I moved my music folder to a new internal drive on my PC. Now, though I can see my playlists and all 8,000 songs listed in iTunes, every song has the exclamation mark. I can can go one by one and redirect iTunes to find it on the new drive, but have been unable to get the settings to work in Preferences and Advanced tab for "consolidate library". I DON't want to just create anew library if that means losing all the ratings/etc I have spent time on with the original database.
Do you think the instructions you give here will work for me too?
    Thanks!

    Thank you,

If the upgrade to Vista somehow erased the files, you'll need to restore them from your backup or, if a feature of the country you're in, download the content again from the iTunes Store. See:
