ITunes - getting started

Hi,
Sorry if some of these questions seem basic. I"m just getting started. I've read through quite a bit of the user docs and can't seem to find answers to a couple of questions:
1. In iTunes, how can I add my own folders in the library? By this I mean hae my own folder that appears with Music, Movies.
2. In iTunes, with my iPod connected, how do I add a folder on my iPod itself? (Not a playlist)
3. In iTunes, if I choose "Manually manage music and videos", what am I gaining, and what am I giving up? What MUST I do as a result of that choice, that I would not otherwise have to do?
4. In iTunes, if I choose "Enable disk use", same questions.
I appreciate whatever help anyone is kind enough to share!

1. Use the iTunes menu "file/new folder". This will appear in the playlist section, not under the library section.
2. You can't. The iPod does not support the use of folders.
3. You are gaining not a lot really except the ability to manually manage the content of the iPod by dragging and dropping content from iTunes to iPod. Some people do this because their library is larger than the iPod storage space, or they want to delete songs from the iTunes library and keep them on the iPod (auto sync doesn't allow it and doing this is not recommended). Or if there are multiple iPod users using the same iTunes library (although this can be achieved via auto sync also).
With manual, you "must" drag and drop content to the iPod. You're giving up the convenience of auto sync.
See: How to manage the iPod content manually.
4. By enabling disk use, you are allowing the iPod to be used an an ext hard drive for storage of files etc. You can add these files via Explorer but music etc added this way will not be playable, it's a storage method only.
If you were to set the iPod to manual, disk use is an automatic setting and cannot be changed. Also, when disk use is enabled, the iPod is not automatically ejected from the computer after use, you need to manually eject it or it will continue to display "do not disconnect".

  • Apple-created Getting Started Guide for iTunes?

Several months ago, I was able to locate a .PDF entitled "iTunes Getting Started" that gave great instructions for using iTunes. I've used it in the past in my teaching and my students found it helpful.
Today, I went looking for it again and cannot find it. I can find the "Getting Started" series for each of the iLife apps EXCEPT iTunes.
The ones for iLife '08 are hosted at http://www.apple.com/support/manuals/ A Google search returns all the '06 version Getting Started guides, but nothing I use returns the iTunes Getting Started document.
I know I've used one for iTunes, but just can't locate it.
Does anyone have a copy they'd share/post? Or know where Apple's got it stored?
    Thanks,

At present I have no power to the Gen 7, so need to get some power to it I think.  I pressed the buttons as you suggested, but nothing is showing up at this point.  Thank you for your response as the more I can rule out before  I take it back the better I think.

  • Cannot get iTunes to start, no matter what fixes I try

    Hi all!
I was running iTunes 12 on Windows 64x computer. My iTunes started crashing a few days ago and now won't open AT ALL. Not in Safe Mode or anything. Won't create a new library either. I get no error message either.
Please don't tell me to uninstall/reinstall iTunes or Quicktime, I have scoured the internet and Apple support community forums and I've just about tried every single fix I could possibly find.
This is the first thing I tried: http://support.apple.com/en-za/HT1923
so please don't suggest that one again. I've even tried unistalling quicktime and also reinstalling the latest version. I have downgraded my iTunes to a previous version. I have tried using an older library file. I have tried the msconfig fix. I have tried the sfc /scannow in command prompt too. It won't even open in safe mode. It won't let me create a new library. NOTHING.
Some of the articles I read:
Sometimes (usually late at night when I need to get to bed) itunes will not respond once it opens on my windows laptop.  Get twirly spin and if that ever stops, itunes freezes and I cannot do anything with it.

itunes will not open --windows 7 64bit
And NONE of those solutions have worked!!!!
I thought it might be a problem with IOBit software which I installed recently, so I uninstalled that, but it didn't make any difference.
I have enabled iTunes and Bonjour on the Firewall too like it says here: How to enable iTunes in Windows Vista, Windows 7, and Windows 8 firewall - Apple Support
I have even looked at msvcr80.dll and QTMovieWin.dll. I must say, copying QTMovieWin.dll has kept iTunes running longer in Task manager than anything else, a whole 45 sec. But it still didn't open!!
Please if anyone has help it would be appreciated!!
    Thanks a lot!

    Actually my iTunes just started!!!!
So if anyone else is having this problem, the last thing I tried was copying the QTMovieWin.dll from my C:\Program Files (x86)\Common Files\Apple\Apple Application Support folder to my C:\Program Files (x86)\iTunes folder and started my iTunes Helper.exe
    Hope that can help someone!

  • ITunes 9 - Getting Started video won't play

iTunes 9 installation was smoothly and quickly, however:
While the "Welcome to iTunes" startup window opens properly but"Getting Started with iTunes 9" movie won't fully load or play.
This first tutorial movie on the "Welcome" list only plays the first couple of minutes and stops. Close Window and/or Quit/Restart iTunes relaunches "Welcome" and "Getting Started" but the movie still won't play.
I also have the latest version of QuickTime (v7.6.4, downloaded this morning) installed under Mac OS 10.5.8.

Immediately after installing iTunes 9.0 and Opening iTunes, the 'Getting Started' folder popped up in front of the iTunes window. I wanted to 'look around' at iTunes first, so Closed the Getting Started window. Now that I'm ready to watch those videos, I can no longer FIND that folder or the videos. Anyone know what happens to them once they've been Closed? Thanks...

That error message suggest you have a permissions issue. Make sure you have full read/write privileges for the Drive/ Folder location that you are copying the files to.

  • When starting up iTunes, getting error message "A duplicate file name was specified"

Downloaded recent version of itunes, and started recieving the error, tried all the fixes mentioned on here and the internet. Even after reformating the HD, installing a different version of windows (W7), and installingf iTunes, still getting the error.  This is not allowing me to authorize the machine or sync the iPhone.  Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.
PS - there is no third party software and describe in some troubleshooting notes.
    Thank you in advance.

I have a 27" iMac with the latest version of iTunes.  I tried restoring my iPod and even removing and re-installing iTunes.  What eventually worked for me was plugging into my PC and restoring/reformatting it to work with my PC.  I don't know why it wouldn't work with my iMac, but now it seems to be working.

It helped earlier but it has come back again. I don't know what to do. I tried what you said earlier but this time even this is not working either. And quite intrestingly my phone won't turn off. I turn it off, it goes off and then restarts on its own and then keep giving the same message again and again.
Could it be a charging cable, is there any chance that the cable which was working fine one day could turn to be "incompatible" with iphone the other day????????
