ITunes has encountered a problem and needs to close -BUT IT NEVER OPENS!!!!

Had to do a system restore and lost some applications. Reinstalled ITunes, but now everytime I try to open ITunes I get a message that says ITunes encountered a problem and needs to close. It never opens though! I have uninstalled and re-installed too many times to count. I opened the error message and this is what is being sent to Microsoft (c:/Dounme~\Owner\LOCALS~1|Temp\WER97.tmp.dir00\appcompat.txt) Does anyone know what this means and how I can fix it?????

I would go through a complete uninstall and reinstall once again. This time, follow go to kbase 93976 (http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=93976). Look under the 'General Installation Troubleshooting' section, and start by going through the uninstall (including leftover files in Program Files and system32). After that, go through the section on using the Windows Installer Cleanup Utility, and remove all Apple software that shows up.
Hopefully that should get it working.

    Hello there, ytnoj.
Uninstalling and reinstalling iTunes can be a tricky endeavor and must be done in a very specific way. The following Knowledge Base article provides the step-by-step of the process:

  • "iTunes has encountered a problem and needs to close"-won't even open!

For the last day or so, every time I try to open iTunes, I get that error message. When this started, I had not updated or made any changes. It just happened all of a sudden for apparently no reason. Since then, I have re-downloaded iTunes and Quicktime. It still won't open. I have Windows XP. I would appreciate any advice anyone could give me. Thanks!

I had the exact same error message & iTunes closing. I had gone back to an earlier version of iTunes, as I had read in another forum (like so many posts here, my question had remained unanswered. Suffice it to say be careful where you wear your ipod. The bottom, where the ipod connects to the USB cable is very susceptible to moisture and can corrode the logic board), that the earlier versions of iTunes worked better to restore an ipod stuck on locked. The earlier version kept crashing & closing, just like yours. I tried to reinstall both iTunes and Quicktime, but kept getting an error message. It's possible that iTunes and/or Quicktime have become corrupted somehow. Unlike Windows, Apple software isn't exactly forthcoming with explanations when something isn't working. The following finally worked:
I uninstalled both iTunes and Quicktime from Add/Remove programs, then used a registry cleaner to remove keys. I went to search (clicked on "start", then "search". I 1st did a search for "iTunes", "Quicktime", "Apple Mobile Device", and "Bonjour", deleting whatever showed up (you'd be surprised at how many places contained inf). I then did the same for the Registry (back up your registry 1st, just to be safe). I then backed up all media content, emptied the Recycle bin. After restarting, I downloaded a new copy of iTunes (don't remember whether I had to also download Quicktime again, but Bonjour & Apple Mobile Device are installed with iTunes.
It turned out that I didn't need the backups for my media but it's best to be safe. Good luck!

  • Cannot open itunes, "itunes has encountered a problem and needs to close"

I have tried numerous to times to download itunes update after having ipod display indicating not all songs have been transfered because of old version. I've tried disabling McAfee and getting windows updates, (I'm running XP)When I look in programs, ipod for updater it lists both 2004-08-06 and 2005-10-12. The error message reads" itunes has encountered a problem and needs to close" Quicktime does not open either and gives the same error mess. Will uninstalling and reinstalling itunes help? and if so, I loose my entire collection right?

    hi daytimer!
The error message reads" itunes has encountered a problem and needs to close" Quicktime does not open either
hmmm. that strongly suggests that the itunes problem is due to a broken quicktime. let's try a careful standalone QT 7.0.3 reinstall first.
download and save the QT installer to your hard drive. (we'll run the install from there rather than online.) switch off all antivirus and antispyware applications prior to the install.
    http://www.apple.com/quicktime/download/standalone.html
does the install go through okay? if so, does itunes launch properly after that?

I'm thinking your iTunes library got currupted somehow.
Try this (assuming iTunes is shut down and not showing in Task Manager > Processes tab)
    Rename this file
    C:\Documents and Settings\username\My Documents\My Music\iTunes\iTunes Music\iTunes Library.itl
    to ....\iTunes Library.old
Try to start iTunes, will it come up now?

  • Itunes wont open, says Itunes has encountered a problem and needs to close.

When I click on my Itunes icon a big box pops up and says Itunes has encountered a problem and needs to close. Sorry for the inconvenience. And says tell microsoft about the problem, you know. And I've been trying to access the program for three days and it's doing the same thing, I got a trojan horse right before it started doing it, but I've gotten rid of it and scanned many times, it's gone. I also uninstalled and reinstalled both Itunes and quicktime but it still doesen't work, I really need ideas here..lol.

Please help me someone. I bought this Ipod 2 weeks ago for my daughters 18th and all we get is this stupid error message all the time. "Itunes have to close - error report etc etc." Have re-installed some many times I have lost count. Know very little about computers so need really simple instructions. I am really not impressed with this if any Apple technicans are reading this and want my money back!!!!

  • When I open iTunes, I receive an error that reads "iTunes has encountered a problem and needs to close.  Sorry for the convenience."  When I click to see the error, it reads "AppName: itunes.exe      AppVer: 10.5.2.11      ModName: msvcr80.dll"  Why ?

When I open iTunes, I receive an error that reads "iTunes has encountered a problem and needs to close.  Sorry for the convenience."  When I click to see the error, it reads "AppName: itunes.exe  AppVer: 10.5.2.11  ModName: msvcr80.dll"  Why ?  I am overly frustrated.  Please help.  Not exactly sure which operating system I have.  It is a dell laptop with xp.

Well I was able to successfully revert back to iTunes8. Here's my steps:
    1. In Add/Remove Programs I deleted all Apple products (iTunes, QuickTime, Safari, Bonjour, etc.)
    2. I then check C:\Program Files\ and made sure all folders were deleted (QuickTime, etc.)
    3. I then ran a Registry Cleaner program to make sure all entries from Apple products were removed.
    4. I then rebooted my PC
    5. I then downloaded iTunes8.0.2 from here: http://www.apple.com/downloads/macosx/apple/ipod_itunes/itunes802forwindows.html
    6. After it installed it said it could use my iTunes library file because it was created with a newer version. So I re-created my library by following these steps: http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1451
It took some time but iTunes is now back up and running. And I have all my playlists, etc. I haven't tried to sync anything yet. I'm just thrilled to have my iTunes back!

  • Itunes will not open- "iTunes has encountered a problem and needs to close"

My iTunes will not open anymore, giving me the error message: "iTunes has encountered a problem and needs to close. We are sorry for the inconvenience." I have uninstalled and reinstalled iTunes several times, and with different versions. Nothing I do seems to work. I have even copied the program files from a friend whose iTunes does work, hoping that would fix it, but to no avail. Has anyone discovered a way to fix this problem. I have a friend who has the same problem, but hasn't been able to fix it either.

What happens when you go into control panel, click on the Quick Tunes config icon, and then select the audio tab? If you get an error, Quick Time is corrupted. Also double check your sound card drivers. Can you play any sound at all? Does Windows Media Player function? What is you anti virus software?

  • ITunes has encountered a problem and needs to close

Just downloaded latest version of itunes with quicktime. Won't run. Get the Itunes has encountered a problem and needs to close error to Microsoft message. Have latest Windows XP updates as well as latest Ipod updater. Have Norton Antivirus. Looked at task manager, nothing is running. Please help.

I shutdown my antivirus software(Norton). Downloaded the upgrade iTunes and Quicktime, then downloaded Quicktime by itself.(Don't know if this was necessary, but it worked.) Restarted the Norton. Problem resolved for now.

    I want my iTune back
    Miguel

The problem is with the current version of icuuc40.dll .
Download the zip folder and extract icuuc40.dll from it.
When you open the zip folder the file is in icu\bin.
You need to replace your old version of icuuc40.dll with this one.
The file is in Program Files\Common Files\Apple\Apple Application support.

  • ITunes has encountered a problem and needs to close.  PLEASE HELP ME!!!!!!!

I bought the Apple airport router I installed it with the provided disc and that same day my iTunes would not come up. For window users I get the box that reads iTunes has encountered a problem and needs to close. We are sorry for the inconvenience with a box that you click to Send Error Report. Here is the error……… AppName: itunes.exe AppVer: 7.6.2.9 ModName: unknown
    ModVer: 0.0.0.0 Offset: 000a019a
I figured that my music files somehow were corrupt and that shi_ happens. Well a week later I was having troubles with the Apple router so I returned it and uninstalled it from my program files C drive. Then I gave iTunes another shot and it opened. Weird, I know. Well my next router was a Net gear it worked fine but it lagged on COD4 while online with my PC, so I returned it. Then I bought a Belkin - N1 Vision Wireless-N Wireless Router and it did not come with an install disc just plug and play. That very same day my iTunes gave me that **** error again. This time I can’t try to uninstall it from my program files because it was plug and play. I already tried to do a system restore and I shut down my PC and start it back up without the router plugged in and still no luck. I also tried to repair iTunes and that didn’t work. I went to the Geek Squad and they tell me the two issues can’t be related (a router not allowing my iTunes to run). My computer is running on Windows XP Pro. I’m now playing my music through Windows Media Player. I’m in ****!!!! Can someone please help me!!!!! I also tried a few things on iTunes support and they didn’t work. I will be more than happy finically facilitate someone for helping me get my iTunes up and running like usual. Dallas @ [email protected] I’ll be checking this thread every day. PLEASE HELP!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

,......"The enstaller encountered errors before the requested operations for Quicktime could not be completed. To retry these operations at a later time, please run the installer again."
Checking on things that can cause QuickTime launch errors and install/uninstall errors now.
Have you at any stage installed an ACE or K-Lite Mega Codec Pack, any copies of the programs QT Alternative, QT Lite or Storm Codec, or any media converter programs that can convert files into QuickTime readable formats?
(I'm checking on these things because depending on the versions of the programs/codec-packs, these can install earlier versions of QuickTime componentry on a PC, which can interfere with the running/installing of a higher version of QuickTime.)

    So frustrated.
    So please help me....T____T

    hi David!
okay, it's time to check if you have a weird registry problem. (the problem i'm thinking about produces the same error message.)
we diagnose that by creating a new user account (with full administrative privileges). you can do that in your "user accounts" control panel. there's help documentation on it to the left of the screen. while you're in there, also switch off "fast user switching" in your logging-on preferences.
now log on to the new user account. can you successfully launch itunes from inside there?
keep us posted on your progress.

    HI all

Does anyone know what should i do?
    Thanks
    Wouiners

I had the same issue. I found a solution under a different thread posted by scubastevee32. It worked for me. I copied pasted his solution below.
after countless hours of dead ends.... I found this to fix the problem(thank you "b noir")
hat one could be being caused by a problem with your QuickTime. (itunes uses QuickTime for audio and video playback.)
so let's try swapping out your QuickTime.
head into your Add/Remove programs. uninstall QuickTime.
Next, we’ll manually remove any leftover program files and folders.
    1. On the Start menu, click My Computer (or double-click My Computer on the Desktop).
    2. In My Computer, open Local Disk.
    3. Open Program Files.
    4. Right-click on the QuickTime folder and click Delete from the shortcut menu.
    5. Navigate to C:\Windows\system32\.
    6. Remove the files QuickTime.qts and QuicktimeVR.qtx.
    7. Restart your computer.
next, we'll get a fresh copy of QuickTime into your PC by doing a repair install of itunes.
switch off antivirus and antispyware applications prior to the repair install.
go into Add/Remove and select itunes. click "Change" and then click "Repair".
if the repair install goes through okay, restart the PC and try launching itunes again. does it launch properly now?

  • "iTunes has encountered a problem and needs to close."  Anyone?

"iTunes has encountered a problem and needs to close." This is what, i get whenever I try to sign onto my Itunes. I have had an Itunes account since 2005 and have never had a problem with upgrades. Then I try to upgrade to 8.0 3 months ago, and haven't been able to fix it since.
My husband just recieved an Ipod for xmas, and want to be able to access Itunes.
So, again, I deleted it from my PC and tried downloading 8.0 and previous versions and still get the samething. "iTunes has encountered a problem and needs to close." Any suggestions?

I have a computer with *Microsoft XP Home Edition* software:
After spending DAYS trying to uninstall/install itunes for our new Ipod Nano, I read the article about deleting 'Quicktime' from System32. This alone did not work for me, so I did a 'Start/Search' and entered 'Quicktime' and searched all my hard drives. I removed all entries found to the recycle bin. Then I did the same for 'itunes', removing entries to the recycle bin. I think I had a lot of miscellaneous old garbage stored on disk that caused install problems.
*LOW & BEHOLD*, I was able to install and 'EXECUTE' itunes. Hope this helps.
