ITunes library appears invalid

Since I upgraded to the latest version of itunes (months ago), i have had issues upon opening the program. Instead of opening my library, it gives me an error message saying: The file "itunes library" does not appear to be a valid iTunes library file. iTunes has attempted to recover your iTunes library and renamed this file "iTunes Library (Damaged 5)". This is the 5th time I've tried to open it today and I keep getting this message.
When I first downloaded the upgrade, my library was working fine as usual then after a few weeks I began seeing this error. It reloads my entire library, but some of the artwork is missing and it duplicates my playlists (audiobooks, movies, podcasts, etc.) I am able to get album artwork through the Advanced tab, but I need to do it everytime this happens.
I've uninstalled iTunes and reinstalled it. I've also renewed my permissions through Utility. I wasn't getting this error for a while, but now it has started again and is happening more frequently. I don't know what could be causing it.

Sometimes you can resolve it by doing the following:
- Download the .exe file from Apple.com/iTunes
- Go to Control Panel > Add or Remove Programs
- iTunes > Remove
- Open C:\Program Files (default location)
- Find "iTunes" (default folder name)
- Shift + Delete > OK
- Run a registry cleaner, such as PC Tools Desktop Maestro, to remove all old shortcuts and registry keys no longer valid on your computer.
- Start > Shut Down > Restart your computer
- Run the iTunes install program
This should fix the problem, however may require also to update your Windows software (update.Microsoft.com) and download the latest Visual Basic Runtime executable. One time during my clean reinstall the iTunes software mentioned an error with a vbrun executable and couldn't continue the install until I found it online.

Its left up to you but try to set your firewall to let iTunes thru so you don't have to disable it. If you have a High speed connection our sometimes better off with a firewall on due to all the viruses and malware on the net these days

  • Itunes library appears empty

I have about 5GB of music but all of a sudden my itunes library appears empty... I am pretty sure the music is still in my computer but I can't access it.

do you know where on your machine the files are at (start in "my computer", then into your hard drive, and so on)??? If you do then make sure that the directory that itunes has for your music is the same as where they are actually at. If you can't find them do a search for "all files and folders" using an audio extension such as .mp3 or .aac and see if you can locate where they are at.

  • Multiple of the same iTunes library appearing in Apple TV

Since I up dated my macbook air (13" Mid 2011) to the developer preview of Yosemite, my iTunes library on apple tv appears twice, some times as many as four times. None of them will connect properly. They usually time out with the standard error ' Could not connect to "### Library" '. My house mates also use Yosemite and there libraries seem to connect just fine. I am now on the 3rd preview of Yosemite, and each have been the same.
My work around for this has to airplay straight from iTunes, which usually works for one episode of something. Which I usually have to quite and restart iTunes as it won;t connect anymore.
Has anyone out there had anything similar and found a fix. I have been searching the net for a while now and haven't found anything.
    ~Tim

I've had the same thing happen to me, also since installing Yosemite beta 3. It's like the Apple TV vaguely knows that my iTunes library is out there, in some way/shape/form, but it's unable to make the connection so that it can interact with the library normally. Almost makes me wonder if there's something iTunes-related in the mix as well...

  • Help! Can't save to disc/backup my iTunes! NO OPTION to save OR back up to disc my iTunes Library appears in the toolbar when I select 'File', then 'Library'. Just 'Organize Library...', 'Export Library...', 'Import Playlist...', and 'Export Playlist...'

Help! I can't save to disc OR backup my iTunes Library! iTunes support instructions are to simply select 'File', then 'Library', then select 'Back Up to Disc', but when I try to the only options that appear are 'Organize Library...', 'Export Library...' then below those are 'Import Playlist...' and 'Export Playlist...' (which appears in the list, but I cannot select). No option to save my library appears at all. Just those four. I've had no problems syncing, playing, adding or purchasing with my account and my iTunes version is up to date. Can anyone tell me what the problem is and what I should do so I can save my library?

  • ITunes library appears twice in folder

    Hello -
My iTunes library seems to appear twice in my Home>Music folder. The second time they are duplicated but all tunes at higher quality than I'd downloaded the previous set. Can I delete the duplicate set?
    Thanks...

  • Every song in itunes library appears twice. how do i delete the dups

in my itunes library every song shows up twice. how do I delete the duplicates?

Apple's official advice on duplicates is here Find and remove duplicate items in your iTunes library. It is a manual process and the article fails to explain some of the potential pitfalls such as lost ratings and playlist membership, or that sometimes the same file can be represented by multiple entries in the library and that deleting one and recycling the file will break the other.
Use Shift > View > Show Exact Duplicate Items to display duplicates as this is normally a more useful selection. You need to manually select all but one of each group to remove. Sorting the list by Date Added may make it easier to select the appropriate tracks, however this works best when performed immediately after the dupes have been created.  If you have multiple entries in iTunes connected to the same file on the hard drive then don't send to the recycle bin.
Use my DeDuper script if you're not sure, don't want to do it by hand, or want to preserve ratings, play counts and playlist membership. See this thread for background, this post for detailed instructions, and please take note of the warning to backup your library before deduping.
(If you don't see the menu bar press ALT to show it temporarily or CTRL+B to keep it displayed.)
The most recent version of the script can tidy dead links as long as there is at least one live duplicate to merge stats and playlist membership to and should cope sensibly when the same file has been added via multiple paths.

  • My itunes library appears to be empty for no apparent reason......!

I cleared out some unused files on my laptop today and defragmented the disk, and now my itunes library is empty... Is there any way I can transfer the tunes from my ipod onto the laptop? And more importantly if I plug the ipod in to the laptop and it 'syncs' will it suck all the tunes out of my ipod?
Distressed is not the word!!! Any help appreciated!!

Do a Start > Search > All or part of the file name
    itunes library.itl
How many do you find, and does one have a recent Date Modified on it? It might just be that it is in the recycle bin, and you just need to restore it.
Other than that, buy a 3rd-party ipod manager program to get everything off your ipod.

  • How do I import an iTunes library from an external drive if that drive has been simply removed from a dead computer, without prior measures being taken to ensure it is possible to transfer the library over?

Basically, my issue here is, I had a fully functioning iTunes on my previous Acer laptop which I used to store my music for my iPhone, I have over 2000 songs on this iTunes and as the laptop suddenly died due to motherboard failure, there was no way to follow out the instructions given by apple on how to properly transfer one iTunes library to another.
The only source of music I have comes from source files on the HDD, which, stupidly I chose to organise myself.
A large quantity of this music was deleted from the iTunes library but stayed on the HDD in the source folders (I do not know why)
By simply dragging my music folder from my HDD to a new iTunes, all the files do go over, however many of them are duplicated (due to 320>120 bit rate MP3 creations) and a number of them are simply not wanted.
Is there a way to transfer my old library straight into this new one? bearing in mind I have all the program files and everything that had iTunes running on my old computer stored onto this USB drive?
    Thank you!

When I have done this, all I did was network the two machines and copy the contents of the iTunes folder to the other machine, and that's it.
My understanding (which may not be 100% correct) is that the one file that is absolutely necessary is iTunes Library, and that the XML file is actually a copy auto-generated from the iTunes Library, appearing in a different format only for non-iTunes apps that take advantage of the iTunes Library data.
As far as I know, if you simply have the Library (database) file and all your original music files, iTunes on that computer should operate as it did on your old computer. I believe that the Album Artwork, Genius Data, and XML files can be regenerated from the Library file. Not sure about the Extras file.

  • How do I import an iTunes library stored by a different user on the same macbook?

My husband and I are used to share the same Library and we just have our own playlists. I finally was able to import the my libary from my old Windows computer, but now I face another challenge:
Now I can only see the music files when logged in as user B (me), but user A (my husband) cannot see any of my music files.
I feel like I need to move my files to a shareable location, but don't know how to do that on a Mac.
Then I want to know how I can make sure we do not copy all our music to be twice on the same computer.
Any suggestions how I can resolve this the easiest way?
    Thanks in advance!

  • Multiple artists with same tracks but iTunes library is sane

Ok, so I have a problem with multiple artists on my iPod. I know this has been discussed a lot before, but I haven't seen this actual problem yet. The problem is I don't get just one or two multiple cases, we're talking like 20-30 multiple instances of the same spelling of an artist and with all the same tracks listed when you select each multiple instance, however the iTunes library appears to be fine. I've tried resetting the iPod, restoring the iPod, and nothing. Anyone have any ideas?
    IBM ThinkPad   Windows XP Pro

What you can try is to convert the song that appears on your iPod. This creates another file of the same song. Find the song that shows up multiple times on your iPod and right click the song. Choose the option "Convert to AAC" or somthing close to that. After converting, there will be two songs listed on your iTunes library. Delete the old song, and keep the new one that you just created. And if this problem still persists, then you have to delete that song and get another copy of that song elsewhere.

Does anyone know how to do this so that all my playlists are also imported and not just the music itself?

  • ITunes Locking up since 7.2upgrade, Error during "Updating iTunes Library"

Since loading 7.2 last night my iTunes opens and a pop up window that says it is updating the itunes library appears and the progress bar goes about 1/2 half across and then freezes the application. I even let it run thru the night to see if it was just taking a long time. I have to go into task manager and kill the application, it says not responding. I uninstalled 7.2 and reinstalled it and it didn't fix it. Ugh, what should I do now?

Okay. that's suggesting there might be a problem with a content file in your collection. (If it's damaged in just the right/wrong way, that can choke a library update.)
Tracking down which file (or files) is causing you grief can be a trial. But the "Check for Content files with issues" section from the following document may be of some assistance:
