ITunes ***** my CPU

Has anyone else noticed how itunes drains your cpu for the simplest tasks. Downloading podcast drains 100% of my CPU making multitasks almost impossible.

What platform (Mac or Windows)?.  If Windows, I found that disabling and the immediately re-enabling Apple Mobile Device USB Driver in Device Manager (its under USB controllers) solved the problem on my old XP computer.  I wrote a little program that did that with one click, but I don't remember how I did it (my new Windows 7 computer does not have that problem).

Is iTunes endlessly saying "Accessing iTunes Store"? Or is something a bit different going on?

• ITunes causing CPU spikes

Ever since I upgraded to the most recent version of iTunes, my laptop has gone extremely slow when iTunes is running (i'm now using winamp). The CPU usage spikes from 80% up to 95-100%.
My music is stored on an external hard drive, the laptop is an Inspiron 9100 (Pentium 4, 3.20GHz, 1024MB RAM) and had no problems whatsoever before upgrading.
I did a complete wipe of my laptop a couple of days ago and all other applications are running much faster, but i've downloaded iTunes again and the same problem occurs. I've also tried downgrading the version to see if that helps but it doesn't.
Anyone suggest anything or experience similar?

I have to agree that there is some major problem with iTunes - I'm totally unimpressed having never used it before and just having bought my first ipod.
Windows XP SP2, 1.6 Ghz, 2Gb RAM
Insert any music CD and RIP via iTunes = 100% CPU utilization
Insert any music CD and RIP via Windows Media Player = 40% CPU utilization
So I need a dedicated machine to support the ripping of my music? What a joke.

• ITunes high CPU usage

Every single time I delete or add any item to iTunes, the CPU hits 100%, sometime for over 45 minutes.
- iTunes does not respond to 'Quit'
- Everytime you 'Force Quit' it comes right back.
- Tried shutting off Ping, signing out of iTune Store - nothing!
- Looked at all similar threads and discussions, unfortunately nothing helps, you just have to wait it out.

Quickly doublechecking something ... you've tried disabling wireless syncing?

• ITunes high cpu, CoreAUC problem

Hi,
Running iTunes 10.4.1 on a 2011 MBA and it's constantly spiking the CPU. I emptied my library, created a new library, tried another account, but the problem won't go away. I don't use any iTunes plugins.
I've sampled the iTunes process in activity monitor and I see many, many messages like these:
        +                               ! : | + ! : 7 ???  (in CoreAUC)  load address 0x7fff931d9000 + 0x5e6b64  [0x7fff937bfb64]

Anyone know how I can troubleshoot this problem further ?
Thanks !

I am having the EXACT same problem with my MBA 13" mid 2011 ( 128 GB i5 version ).
I can't find an solution for this and am pretty new to mac OS. Went back to the seller and he said i should format my disk and reinstall everything from a fresh OS copy. Tried it but it didnt fix anything. Went back and he said i should contact apple...
Also looked on the internet, and the problem isn't that common apparently...
Found some things about CoreAUC and i'm not sure if replacing it matters, because i already tried formatting it...
Hope someone can help!
Thanks in advance

• ITunes Maxing CPU when next song plays

I installed the latest update of iTunes 7. Since then, while playing songs, iTunes fluxuates from 30% CPU to 65% with it occasionally maxing the CPU to 100% when a new song starts. The music sounds all garbled for about a second or two and locks up my whole machine. Then iTunes CPU drops back to in between 30% and 65% and the song plays fine. This did not happen with the initial release of version 7. Only after the first update was installed. If I pause the songs, the CPU drops down to below 20%. This also happens if iTunes is the only program I have running, just not as often. Any suggestions on how to fix this would be greatly appreciated. My laptop has a Intel Pentium M processor 1.60 GHz with 1 GB of RAM.

Sorry for my english ...
I have the same problem too. But I also saw that this appears when at every 10 seconds iTunes alternate/scrowling the artist name and the album name. In full screen, the cpu goes to 70%; in a small window, "only" 35%. When iconified, there is no problem. When it appens at the same time of a new music the sound is ****** for two seconds.
This problem don't appears in the version 6.
How to tell that to apple ?? This must be corrected !
Thanks !

• Itunes causing CPU performance to get to 100 percent

Hello,
Lately itunes causes my CPU performance to oscillate between 10 and 100 percent, which causes my computer to stall out every few seconds. Here is a picture of what my cpu performancee looks like:
This only begins to happen as soon as I start playing a song. If itunes is sitting idly, the computer runs fine.
I used to have other programs open with itunes such as iconcertcal and isproggler, but i have made sure to uninstall such programs. I have tried uninstalling itunes and quicktime several times. This doesnt fix the problem.
Sometimes when I exit out of itunes it tells me that another program is using the itunes interface. I dont know how to tell what program that is. Originally i thought the problem happened because my scrobbling agent was connecting to a server to report the songs I played (i use it for a site called last.fm), but as i said, the problem is continuing even after I uninstalled these programs.
If anyone could help me through this issue, I'd appreciate it. I love itunes and I wouldnt want to have to switch to another music client.

I think i may have fixed this problem. It had to do with foxytunes, an itunes plugin for Itunes.

• ITunes load CPU when idle

Good day!
Today I watched another surprise from wonderful iTunes - it consumes 13% of Core i7 CPU i. e. resources from the whole processor thread when idle! I wasn't doing anything at that moment, didn't listen music and so on. There were also no messages in status bar - just the silent stupid apple.
Do you have any ideas about iTunes was doing and how to prevent this annoying behaviour?
Message was edited by: usamytch

OK... so I uninstalled iTunes 10.1.2 along with Bonjour, Apple Mobile Device Support, Apple Software Update, and Apple Application Support. I then installed iTunes version 10.0 and I didn't experience the problem at all. Just to be sure I then uninstalled everything again and reinstalled 10.1.2 and I again experienced the problem. So... I uninstalled 10.1.2 and went back to 10.0. I'll stay there until Apple fixes the issue in 10.1.2.
However, I do still have a problem. Version 10.0 will not open my library that was updated with 10.1.2. I know I can import all my albums back into iTunes. However... I will lose all my playlists if I rebuild the library from scratch.
Is there any way to get my playlists that were updated under 10.1.2 into a 10.0 library? I have all the files .itl and .itdb files from my 10.1.2 library.
Thanks in advance.

• ITunes 11 CPU keeps peaking at 100%

Most operations in iTunes are resulting in CPU peaks of 100%. This makes iTunes agonisingly slow to use. Can anyone suggest any adjustments to make it less CPU-hungry?

I was having the same problem.  I have a brand new Macbook Pro Retina 15" 2.4GHz i7. I called support 3 times to try and work it out.  We tried re-installing iTunes and a host of other things. It came down to there being a problem with the library.  I had imported it from an earlier version of iTunes from an older mac  (Where it worked fine.)  In the end I just had to re-load all my songs into the library.  This is no small feat as I have around 185K songs in over 1TB in my music library.
The problems i was having were-
-sluggish performance, gap between song playback, slow searching, slow quitting (Or not quitting at all until a force quit)  It was essentially unusable
-using 100% or more of CPU.
-not being able to remove songs from the library.
- having multiple temp files appearing in the music library folder
I ended up creating a new library in the music folder in the sidebar. (Its default location).   I keep my files on an external HD, and set up the prefs to keep the music folder there.  You will want to export your playlists somewhere where you can find them and import them after you build the new library.  As long as your files don't move, iTunes should be able to load everything back into the playlists.
Once everything was set I went to iTunes/Files/Add to Library and manually selected a chunk of my library, then let it process.  I would take a letter or 2  at a time so I could redo if necessary.  (such as bands starting with" A", starting with "B" etc).  normally it would take 3-4 hours per letter.  I would let it do its thing, then quit and restart itunes, make sure it was playing, quitting etc as it should.  It took me 4 days to get the entire library re-entered, then re-loaded my playlists, and now it seems to be working just fine.
Obviously this was a pain as it took 4 days to re-do, but there was something about the old library that itunes just couldn't digest.  Now itunes runs at around 2% CPU when playing, maybe 20% when searching etc.  it will quickly play another selection when chosen.  just like it is supposed to.
it's the slow way to fix it, but it was the only thing that has worked for me.  I finished this 2 days ago, so time will tell if the problem crops up again, but for now averything seems cool.

• ITunes, high CPU, cant sync photos to iphone4!

iTunes is hanging/freezing when i try to loade pics to iPhone4, and using 98-100% CPU! HELP!! it stops right before finish! tried 4 times now..

Im running Vista and it's doing the same thing.
If you really need to sync your phone, you can.  Just de-select sync photos and hit Apply and itunes will sync everything else just not your pictures.
Also, I read on forums something about reseting the winsock in the command Promt, that did not work to sync photos.  I am able to connect to itunes store though as some people said they were having problems with that.

• Itunes lookupd cpu 100%

I write from a MBP with Mac Osx 10.4.11.
When I use Itunes connected to internet a process called lookupd takes about 100% of the cpu.
How to resolve? I have the last version of Itunes installed.

This document contains information about that process. See if you can glean any solution from it...

• ITunes Throttles CPU to 99% Usage

Whenever I start iTunes, my new Gateway desktop's fan roars and blows hot air like a jet engine. Opening the Task Manager reveals that the iTunes process is running at 99%.
This continues until all podcasts have been updated. Then iTunes drops down to a 1% or 2% of CPU usage.
I am running a Intel Core Duo 2.8 GHz with Windows XP Media Center. My internet connection runs through an anonymizer proxy server.
Anyone have thoughts on what is going wrong with my software?

The problem is that Apple just don't know how to
write Windows software.
I won't argue with you there, although I'd add that from what I've seen, they don't know how to write very good Mac software either.
The issue is simply Apple assinging too high a task
priority to the update process and it overridges
everything else.
But I will argue with you there, because this is simply untrue. For example, my PC does not exhibit this problem. No CPU choking whatsoever. Not during playback, not while updating podcasts, zilch.
I suspect that your CPU is being stuck high because iTunes is going into a loop state when some other process is blocking access to some file, like, say, an anti-virus process would do.
One thing iTunes (stupidly) seems to do a whole lot is to continually close and reopen files. For certain overzealous file monitoring and scanning programs (anti-virus, anti-malware, etc), closing a file means that the anti-virus program will come along and open it in read mode, in order to scan it for bad things. If iTunes then comes along and tries to open it again in write mode, iTunes would get halted by the OS, until the anti-virus releases the file and write mode can be granted.
The only solution I know of would be to find the offending scanning program and temporarily disable it, or at least make it wait a bit before trying to scan recently closed files. Or switch to a less aggressive program.
I also add that we have seen this exact sort of issue in relation to certain anti-virus programs and iTunes, such as the "iTunes takes forever to shut down" bug, which is caused by an anti-virus program interfering with iTunes trying to write out the database after being closed. I've also seen it with other programs, such as uTorrent, which in some cases had issues with Google Desktop, since uTorrent had a "feature" that caused it to cycle all open files to closed and open again, every 5 minutes or so. Google Desktop would see the file close and attempt to index it, which honked up uTorrent trying to reopen it, which gave a nasty error and shutdown of the torrent download. It's just a bad idea for programs, in general, to close files when they know they are going to open them again shortly, and programs that do it tend to have relationship issues with other programs. iTunes has this issue a lot.

• When will the itunes 7 CPU usuage at 100% unless minimised fault be fixed

this seems to have been hanging arounfd for ages where if you have itunes maximised it uses up 100% cpu time but the moment you minimise it to the task bar it drops down to around 4%.
Self built Athlon 64 3400+ Nvidia 6800T 2gb mem 250 gb SATA   Windows XP Pro   5th Gen 60gb Black

Never seen this issue myself. Perhaps there is an install or configuration issue. When I am using iTunes it is always full screen. Can play games just fine during imports and downloads.
