Itunes on external hard drive to a bigger capacity external hard drive

I have Windows 7 on my laptop. I have my ITunes on an external drive, the path was as follows H/Music/ITunes/ITunes Music. That external drive filled up, so I went and bought a 1TB one, figuring that would be enough space for my music and movies.
The problem is that I'm confused as to what my subfolders on my new portable drive should be.
I want to keep my ITunes Folder in my PC as the way it was
C/User/Me/My Music/ITunes
and then haqve the ITunes Library be transfered from External Drive H to my new External Drive M. Well, I read some posts and I got confused as to how to transfer all my files from one external drive to the other and I think I messed up big time, since now when I try to go to H/Music/ITunes/ITunes Music I
encounter this H/Music/ITunes/
and then when clicking H/Music/ITunes/ITunes Music/ITunes Music I get this
It sure does seem like a lot of subfolders which I did not have before, so I opened H/Music/ITunes/ ITunes Library.itl and opened ITunes pressing SHIFT and then pointed ITunes to that end, but now half my movies are gone and so some of my music.
But that, I mean I go to the external drive and open H/Music/ITunes/ITunes Music and then click on let's say the Movies folder to open manually and I have all my movies on the list, they just don't show on my ITunes when I open it.Not only that, now when I open Itunes, I have to agree and else, as if it is the first time that I open it. And neddless to say lots of my music has the exclamation
So I know I made a mess of things, but if anyone can help me (I'm no genius for sure, far from it) I would greatly appreciate it.
What I need to know (in simple terms if at all possible, please ) is what folders should I copy or transfer from my H drive to my new M drive so I can open ITunes again pressing shift and choose library accordingly with all my files in...
Eternal good karma towards everyone that even took the time to read all this nonsense from a newbie, and double the good karma to those that will help an old man out.
Cheers!

These are two possible approaches that will normally work to move an existing library to a new computer.
Method 1
Backup the library with this User Tip.
Deauthorize the old computer if you no longer want to access protected content on it.
Restore the backup to your new computer using the same tool used to back it up.
Keep your backup up-to-date in future.
Method 2
Connect the two computers to the same network. Share your <User's Music> folder from the old computer and copy the entire iTunes library folder into the <User's Music> folder on the new one. Again, deauthorize the old computer if no longer required.
Both methods should give the new computer a working clone of the library that was on the old one. As far as iTunes is concerned this is still the "home" library for your devices so you shouldn't have any issues with iTunes wanting to erase and reload.
I'd recommend method 1 since it establishes an ongoing backup for your library.
Note if you have iOS devices and haven't moved your contacts and calendar items across then you should create one dummy entry of each in your new profile and iTunes should  merge the existing data from the device.
If your media folder has been split out from the main iTunes folder you may need to do some preparatory work to make it easier to move. See make a split library portable.
Should you be in the unfortunate position where you are no longer able to access your original library or a backup then then see Recover your iTunes library from your iPod or iOS device for advice on how to set up your devices with a new library with the maximum preservation of data.

My computer died and i am buying a new one (mac is out of budget)
When I get my new computer, obviously I will download Itunes. My Ipod still has all the music on it and the external hard drive is ok.
I don't want to "erase" or lose any information when I sync with a new itunes that is "empty"
What are the steps? After I download Itunes and set the folder location to my external harddrive what is next? Will Itunes recognize my IPOD? Will it load the music/list from my ipd or external into itunes?
    Thanks in advance

This is true of course, but doesn't cover the situation where some files are in the iTunes Media folder and others are on an external drive. In my case I keep my music in the Media folder and all my films on an external drive (there are too many to have on the internal drive). In iTunes 11, and before, it was easy to add those external files by holding down the alt/opt key while dragging to the sidebar. In iTunes 12 this is no longer possible. There are several workarounds: use TuneSpan to move the file after it's been added; delete the file from the Media folder and empty the trash then use iTunes Get Info which will report the file is missing and allow you to locate it; constantly switch the Add to iTunes toggle on and off as required. All of these require a lot more work than just holding down the alt/opt key while adding.
    It constantly gets harder.

  • How can I put my recently purchased iTunes movies on to my thumb drive and WD My Passport external hard drive. My Mac keeps saying "can't be copy because it is too large for the volumes format

How can I put my recently purchased iTunes movies onto my thumb drive and WD my passport external hard drive. My Mac is saying that can't be copied because it is too large for volumes format

[file] is too large for the volumes format
That is usually an indication that the Volume was never Erased or Partitioned for GUID partition table and Mac OS, and is still in a Windows format.
Mac OS X Extended (journaled) has no such file-size limitations

  • Itunes from PC to Mac but kept on an external hard drive

    Afternoon All,
I would appreciate any help I could get on the following query. After owning PC's for years that gave me nothing but trouble I finally upgraded to a 21" Imac two weeks ago.
I'm not a massive user of computers (Itunes and the other half has a load of photos) but given that this thing is so slick looking I've decided to pay more attention to the maintenance of it. So as not to clog up the hard drive I've decided to keep all my photos and music on an external hard drive (the same one I used to transfer from my PC in the first place). It seems relatively straight forward for the photos but not so for Itunes unfortunately.
I thought it was just a matter of changing the location of the Itunes files on the preferences tab in the program but afraid not. When I did this no music was comming up when I opened Itunes (I could however play them straight from the external hard drive but not via Itunes if you know what I mean). So what I have done since is actually copy them all onto my Mac's hard drive hence not accomplishing what I initially set out to do.
Excuse my ignorance if this is something that is straight forward but I am new to Mac's(And loving it !) and like I said I wouldnt be the biggest computer user anyway so would need it spelt out for me.
    Cheers guys
    Shane

Thanks Kappy and Allan. I had a feeling it was something to do with formatting the external harddrive all right, so I'll give that a go and let you know how it works.
Now for my next question - any idea how I would go about formatting a hard drive?
    Regards
    Shane

Sorry, but this does not seem to be an iPad question. I'd therefore suggest you ask in the iTunes for Mac forum.

I need to move an iTunes library to an External Hard Drive to free up space on iMac.  I Need suggestions on type of External Hard Drive to use.  Should you use a Multimedia Hard Drive like LaCie LaCinema Classic HD Multimedia Hard Drive OR a standard Large Desktop Hard Drive like Western Digital/Seagate/LaCie?

There is no benefit to the multi-media feature on the first drive you mentioned. If you are going to look at differences between certain drives, I'd look at the differences in reliability first.

  • Running Itunes library on a new computer off of an external hard drive

Hello, I've recently purchased a Macbook and an external hard drive. I transferred all my files from my old Mac onto my external and would like to try to run my itunes library from there through my new laptop as opposed to putting all the files onto the new computer.
Is it possible to have the files exclusively running off the hard drive and never going onto the new macbook? How might I go about doing this?
I've tried following some of the video tutorials but that just seems to route you to do it from your old computer off of a external hard drive, and nothing to do with using it on a new computer.
Basically what I want to do is get everything running off the external (all the old computer's data) and none of it ever to set foot on my new Macbook.
Thank you all in advance for your help!

Assuming you use the iTunes default settings where iTunes copied added items to your iTunes folder and organizes your library (meaning - everything is all self contained in the iTunes folder), then all you have to do is drag & drop your iTunes folder (not just the iTunes Music folder you find inside the iTunes folder) to the external drive and copy the entire thing.
If you want to test that it worked or would like to actually start using it from that location instead, use these instructions when you start iTunes to point it to the new location...
How to open an alternate iTunes Library file or create a new one
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=304447
If you are just testing to make sure a backup copy works and still want to use the internal location, then close iTunes after you verify it works, and restart iTunes again with the same instructions and point it back to your internal drive (original) location. Otherwise you are all set to use the library from the external location.
When you move the external drive to another computer, use the same start up instructions above to point your iTunes on that computer to the library on the external drive.

My PC computer was wiped (virus) including itunes. How do I transfer the many playlists and music on my ipod to the new re-installed itunes?? Ipod is synced to old itunes. I have all original music files on external hard drive. Please help?
New itunes is trying to wipe the ipod. But have many many playlists (many hours making) which I want to save. Any help would be appreciated.

If you want to just extract the playlists from your iPod, plug it in iTunes.  When it appears under devices, right->click on it and choose Export Playlists.  Save them to a location such as your desktop and them import them into your library once you have copied and imported all of your music back into it.
See this older post from another forum member Zevoneer covering the different methods and software available to assist you with the task of copying content from your iPod back to your PC and into iTunes.

  • How do I set up ITunes on Lap so that it downloads to an external hard drive and doesn't eat up space on my laptop?

iTunes was eating up all my hard drive, so I bought an external hard drive
    Question 1:
After I move the iTunes file over to the external hard drive, do I just move the file on my lap top to the trash folder and will that free up space on my hard drive?
    Question 2:
If question 1 is good, the next time I down load a movie or song is there anything I need to do to get it to download to the iTunes folder on my external hard drive?

    http://support.apple.com/kb/ht1449
    This article will help you.
    1. Yes, you can trash the original folder. If you have a large media library, then yes you should free up a good chunk of space. However, you must also empty the trash. You can't just leave it in the trash or it will take up space.
    2. Once you select the new media folder in iTunes as the article tells you, I believe all new downloaded media will automatically go to that new folder.

  • Why won't iTunes recognize my iPod, ever since I got an external hard drive

I got an external drive and store my library there on the external drive. Ever since, iTunes will not recognize my iPod so I cannot update anything. Any suggestions?? Do I need to store the music on my hard drive and only use the external drive for back up?

If you want to make another drive (direct or portable) on your PC the main music location for iTunes, move all song files there, as well as any future imported music from CDs, here is one method (see the links below):
You will maintain your playlists, ratings, comments, etc. This will only move your music folders location, NOT your iTunes program files. It is my opinion that programs (i.e. – iTunes) work better when installed on your main hard drive. At the very least, it makes it easier to manage all your programs if they are centrally located on one hard drive (the Windows default standard).
See these links for some step-by-step info:
iLounge: Moving your iTunes Library to a New Hard Drive
MacMuse: iTfW: Move iTunes music/Library to new drive
iTunes: Moving your iTunes Music folder
If you are moving the music to an external hard drive or network drive, after the transfer, and to work correctly, the drive must be running prior to your opening iTunes. If not, iTunes will reset the location of your music folder location to the default.
