ITunes -- Wireless -- Home Stereo

I have my entire (almost 600) CD collection in iTunes. I am presently playing from iTunes to my stereo via a Creative Labs XMod Wireless Music System. It works very well, but I have started to think about possibly including a higher quality DAC product. If I continue to use the Creative Labs product for its wireless interconnect, I am not sure how to work an external DAC into the configuration. Advice?

A point of clarity please ... '+powered speakers or a stereo+' (?) ... so in the second case the stereo receiver would be the front end 'powering' the speakers; in the first case 'powered speakers' would refer to speakers that obtained their own power from the household supply?
Correct. Yu could use battery powered speakers.
The Airport Express is not an amplifier. It puts out line level only.
Airport Express 3.5mm jack would need a 'splitter' - one side to each speaker?
No. It's a stereo connector. Get a 3.5mm stereo to a 3.5mm stereo cable or 3.5mm stereo to 2 phono plugs.

  • Wireless home stereo system

    Hi,
I'd like to use a MacMini as a home stereo system using wireless speakers. We have a nice sony system but no where to set it up in our new home and I'd rather get rid of all the wire and keep it out of sight. What's needed to do this? It is possible, yes? Thanks for any ideas. I saw the post on airexpress but that doesn't really address my needs.

The Apple Airport Express and a stereo connection cable are exactly what you need to do this. You also need powered speakers, or speakers that get their power through an AV Receiver and amp.
The Airport Express is a wireless broadband router that can be directly connected to the Mac mini (wired or wirelessly) and used to distribute your Internet connection to other networked computers in the house.
Significantly, the Airport Express also has a single audio jack that allows you to connect either an analog (RCA-style) audio cable or a digital optical SPDIF cable -- either can be connected to the back of your AV Receiver, but you'll get the best quality using the digital cable (assuming your AV Receiver has a free optical digital port). Once the AEX is connected, you assign one of the receiver's Input ports to the computer/AEX. So, instead of connecting a stereo CD or tape player to the receiver, you connect the computer.
The stereo connection kit (cables) must be purchased separately.
We connected the AEX to our computer network using a Category 6 (RJ-45) Ethernet cable. While you can set up the Express to receive network signals wirelessly, it will be more reliable, and possiby faster (depending on the topology and setup), if you rely on Ethernet where possible. This way, the cable or DSL modem is hard-wired to the AEX and the only portion of the network that is wireless is between the wireless computers and the AEX.

  • ITunes to home stereo?

Are there any products on the market that will send my music (at least) to my home stereo? I've got AirTunes but would like to be able to access the music without going back to my desktop in my home office. I've looked into the EyeHome system but not being able to play my purchased music is a serious drawback.
If there's not anything around now, is Apple working on products that will help? I would think that with the video features that it would be natural progression.

    chitapita,
Seems to me your ready for a 5.1 surround sound system.
Your Quad has a digital optical toslink connection that can go to a reciever capable of accepting toslink, the sound options with a quality 5.1 receiver and speakers is incredible. You won't settle for that stereo or iPod output at home anymore.
My advice is to get yourself a large internal drive in addition to your boot drive in the quad, this is where you'll store all your music with backups to the external drive and the iPod for portability of your most used music and on the laptop if you need more control, like your DJ-ing or something. However you should keep all your tweaking on the Quad with clone backups.
Now as far as selection of a 5.1 reciever is up to your budget of course, but do select a reciever capable of decoding Dolby, Logic and DTS 5.1 formats, the more the better actually, the Mac just passes the signal through without decoding. Each of these formats should also have selections to make Wide, Theater and other effects, this way you can play DVD movies with 5.1 and most music will seperate correctly for the surround sound speaker systems (4 corner speakers, a center and a subwoofer)
A surround sound system will fill a whole room with music, the subwoofer will give incredible bass to the music. It's really wonderful, stereo speakers are really lame in comparison.
I have a harmon/kardon dpr 2005 with their matching hkts-14 120 watt speakers and 200 watt subwoofer, it's very loud and powerful, the toslink gives distortion free sound.
What's most likely happening is your recording records and the audio recording quality is so high as compared to the rather low quality of records that your files are too big.
Since you can reduce the file size without affecting the quality, you should consider re-encoding the files into a lower bit-rate format to save space.
I have over 7000 songs and they fit perfectly on my mere 148GB boot drive , in fact I'm under 50% filled on my boot drive. Since Quads are shipping with 250GB drives minimum, either you must have a huge collection or your recording files are oversized. Try re-encoding them into AAC or 128kb Mp3's.

  • ITunes and Wireless Home Stereo

Am I correct in my thinking ....
With an Airport Express I can have wireless 'sound' with any speaker set that has a mini jack?
    or get ...
A set of speakers that have their own onboard wireless receiver.
Just trying to get my head around how all this works. Thank you.

  • Playing itunes on home stereo (wired)?

setup: recently moved and now have a room as a dedicated office; however this poses a new problem as my airport express is in there to print wirelessly but my stereo is in the main room. one of these days when i have a little expendable cash i guess i will buy another one, but in the mean time i'd like to be able to at least plug my macbook into the stereo as temporary solution. i tried plugging a headphone sized audio cable into the line out that splits to red/white on the receiver end, but it is not playing. when i go to the sound tab in system preferences, the audio output says headphones.
question: what am i doing wrong. does my macbook's line out only recognize digital audio cables? is it something im not setting up properly in itunes?

Plug headphones into it and see if it works. If it does, you are plugged into the wrong input on the stereo or something not set correctly.

  • Wirelessly connecting to a home stereo system

  • Streaming iTunes music to home stereo

Hi! I'm trying to stream my iTunes music to my home stereo receiver; doesn't have to be wireless, wired is fine. Here's the catch: I'm using NAS and two notebook computers...the iTunes music doesn't live on either notebook, only on the NAS drive. I want to be able to access the music without having to turn on a computer.
Is there a device that I can attach to my stereo receiver and the network that will let me access the music files from the NAS drive? Having a heckuva time with this, any input is most appreciated!

Sorry, I missed the bit about wanting to not use a computer.
    Try this -> http://www.slimdevices.com/pi_overview.html
You still need a server running but you don't use the computer to access it.

  • Play on home stereo via wireless Bluetooth?

I have an (analog) home stereo. I want to play my iPod Touch 2nd Generation through the stereo via a wireless connection, like BlueTooth. What products will let me do this?

    Hello.
As stated your best option is to seek a Bluetooth Dongle. This will connect to the audio jack on your iPod Touch. You will then want to ensure it comes an adapter to connect to the stereo in the house. This will allow the iPod touch to broadcast the music to the stereo.
You may also want to look into Stereo docking stations. Many of these stations allow you to dock the iPod Touch and then have a remote where you can control it from the couch or across the room. Link below to show you some of the units that can do this.
    http://store.apple.com/us/browse/home/shopipod/ipodaccessories/speakers?mco=MTE4OTc
You may also want to look into an Airport Express. This allows you to stream music from iTunes into your Stereo. You can then download the Remote App via the iTunes App store and control the library from anywhere in the house via a WiFi connection on iPod Touch.

Is there any way to play iTunes through my home stereo from across the room? In other words, is there a downloadable program or a way to use my iTurnes desktop like the Griffin FM transmitter device I use for my Nano so I'm making a wireless connection from my laptop to my home stereo?

  • Need help planning home stereo system utilizing Itunes,iPs, airplay

    Hello,
the internet is overwhelming me with Info, so I will ask you guys my question.
How to best build a home stereo system playing my itunes libraries.
    Here are my stats:
Itunes library is housed in external 1 TB drive, worked off a Windows laptop ( Sony Viao)
I have and use two Itunes accounts ( one for US and one for Germany store)
Have an older Ipod click ( older gen, ), I phone 4S and Ipad 2,
will be upgrading to new iphone and ipad this year.
    What I want to do:
At the moment we have no home stereo system or home theater.  Been happy using the HDMI connector playing video from Ipad to TV. To be honest I do most of my TV viewing directly from the Ipad as it's very transportable.
Music I listen more with headphones, but have been missing my old hi-fi system from 10 years ago, which I no longer have. ( Birthing and raising 2 kids the past 8 years made me forget what I have missed . ).
Anyways it's time to get serious again.
I need to first start with a basic receiver and speakers.
    Question 1:
What kind of a receiver do you recommend? There are so many options now besides hooking DVD/CD player to Receiver/tuner. Now you have wifi options ( airplay etc...). where I understand you can stream your itunes movie/music wifi.  We would want a traditional DVD/CD hook up and itunes.
    Question 2:
Digitial Quality: Does streaming via airplay to a receiver give digitial quality in music? I read that most Iphone/pod docks only offer analog hookup. What about digital. I know there are a few ie. Onkyo ND-S1 that are digitial. Does airplay give the same quality over wifi as a hook-up??
Question 3: I am willing to have most of my library on a ipod/ipad , but what would be the best way to access my itunes library via the exterrnal drive WITHOUT having to run a computer?? also do Airplay and appletv work together, same thing? or need both?
Question 4: Our house is big and not open. this means investing in a single set- up in main area downstairs. But what are some cheaper options ( Sonos too much money for us) for a system more spread out. Can I run from one receiver  one set of speakers with wire hook-up in main room and wireless elsewhere . and how does the wireless work ( wifi?)
I hope I made sense, kinds still brainstorming in my head.

    Hi,
I see no one has taken up the challenge so I'll give it a go
Here's the Apple info for multiple iPods:
How to use multiple iPods with one computer
It has a link to an article on how to share music between different accounts on the same computer which you should read.
    1. When you say 'Archive entire CD collection...' I assume you are talking about loading all your CDs into one or more iTunes libraries?
    2. Assuming one or more iTunes libraries then all you need to do is set the import options correctly. iTunes>Preferences>Advanced>Importing>Import using Apple Lossless Encoder
    3. This would seem to indicate you need one iTunes library. It is the computer that is authorised: iTunes: About Music Store authorization and deauthorization
    4. For each user to have unique song ratings you will need multiple iTunes libraries.
If Lossless and AAC are in the same Library then Smart Playlists will do the trick as you can have the condition 'Kind does not contain Apple Lossless'
You can set the view options to show you what Kind of track in iTunes.
Hope this gets you going on the right tracks.
    Regards,
    Colin R.

  • Can I use Apple TV to play iTunes from my iMac on my home stereo?

How does Itunes from my Imac connect to my home stereo using Apple TV?

    Greetings;
When you launch the iTunes Application, down in the lower right hand corner, you see an icon and "Speakers".  Select the Apple TV device and iTunes will then use the Apple TV as an external speaker.
You can also access your iTunes music and movies from the Apple TV menu.  With your iTunes Application open on your computer, select "Computers" from the Apple TV Menu.
You'll also need to turn ON "Home Sharing" in the iTunes Application.  You can find that setting in the "Advanced" menu option in iTunes.
Hope this helps!  All the best...and Merry Christmas!
