IWeb reformatting 16:9 .mov file to 4:3 aspect ratio

When I drag a 480x270 Quicktime file into a blank iWeb page (I made it Compressor), iWeb changes it to a 4:3 ratio - stretching the image vertically. Known bug? Fix?

Thanks! One odd thing is that when I clicked on "Original size" it took it to 720x480 - totally wrong - but I was able to manually enter the correct size. Seems like an odd bug.

Please give the exact specs of your project. If the material is anamorphic, aspect ratio display is a function of the playback device. What is it?

Move rejected to trash changes aspect ratio of a clip

I just switched from iMovie HD to iMovie '11. I imported all old projects that I did not yet work on into the new version. This worked fine and I created my first movie successfully. For the current movie I have a lot of raw material in the format of 16:9 (DV). So I rejected parts of a clip and moved these to the trash in order to free space. But after moving the rejected parts, something happend to the aspect ratio of the remainder of the clip. The remaining clip is now distorted to 4:3 (black bars to the left and right, image distorted in height). All other clips are still in 16:9 and the projects settings tell this, too.
Does anyone know how to reset the clip in the event viewer to the correct aspect ratio?

It sounds like that in the process of deleting the first half of the clip, the Anamorphic flag was stripped off.
You should be able to fix this in MPEG Streamclip, which is free.
In iMovie, right-click on the Event clip with the bad aspect ratio. Select Reveal In Finder. Drag this clip into Mpeg Streamclip.
In mpeg streamclip, FILE/EXPORT TO DV.
Choose 16:9 as aspect ratio and leave everything else the same.
Import this clip back into your imovie project. When you are sure all is well, you can delete the other one.

Editing two files together for proper aspect ratio output

hello,
i have 2 files that are 720 x 480 which i'll edit into one project playing together side by side.
this will then show on a projector with a native resolution of 1280x800.
i do not want to crop the sides of two source files by half, but to crop them by a lesser amount to make a wider pairing that will play well with the projector's 16:10 aspect ratio, with no black banding.
to begin my project: 768x480 (same 16:10 ratio as the projector) is not an option to select as a project starting point. 1280x800 is also not an option, and although the crop is actually perfect in a 1280x720 project, i don't want fcpx to do the upscaling, and i believe the 16:9 aspect ratio would lead to black banding top/bottom when shown on the projector.
i'm not sure where to begin, any advice would be appreciated,

Unfortunately, FCPX does not offer any 16:10 project settings. The different resolutions offered for HD formats refer to pixel ratio rather than actual dimensions. A project in FCPX is going to be either 4:3 or 16:9. There are a couple of things you can try, but my recommendation would depend on what program will be used to output the movie to the projector (QuickTime?). The 1280x720 dimensions are the standard 720p resolution and is as close as you will get to your desired resolution. If you are worried about the banding that would occur when displaying a 16:9 file on a 16:10 projector, the easiest solution would be to use the media player to stretch the movie to fill the screen. If you have Compressor you could encode your FCPX output to your desired resolution, but you will still be stretching the image. If you want more assistance provide a little more info, are the soure files 4:3 or 16:9 for example, and I may be able to offer more advice if I know a little more.

Exporting HD file to an .flv, aspect ratio is off

I am trying to export from FCE a .mov file and transform it into an .flv for upload on a newspaper website (the only file type our creaky admin alllows). The footage was shot with a Canon Vixia HD AVCHD camera and brought into FCE at 1440 X 1080 and 29.97 fps. My usual workflow is to export it out as a master .mov vile and then take it into Streamclip or iSkysoft Video Converter and transform it into an .flv.
But every time I do it, no matter what settings I tinker with, the output .flv file is clipped and footage on the screen is clipped on the right and left sides.Is it because HD video is 16:9 and the .flv size is 4:3? But I am only being offered 480-320, 640-480 and 1280-720 in export options for .flv with iSkysoft and frame rates from 20, 24, 12 an keep original frame rate. Tried these all and still getting the clippings.
Any advice as once again I run up against the shoals of transcoding?

I finally had to export the file as an .avi and then transcode it into an .flv using Flash Media Encoder, an old workflow and which produced a video with some artifacts and color issues. I am just getting used to shooting with the Canon Vixia and its HD files and any tips for outputting to better quality with an .flv format is most welcome:

Imported PDF File and unchecked FIXED ASPECT RATIO problems.

I just don't get it. . . . I have imported a pdf file into MOTION 2, unchecked BOTH Fixed Aspect Ratio boxes on both the media and the layers and I am still getting major rasterization!
When I scale up the file in Acrobat, there are NO problems. It's something that I am not doing in MOTION.
Any help is VERY appreciated.

Are you putting any filters on it - that causes rasterization...

How do I play my 16/9 QT file with the right Aspect Ratio in QT?

My Quicktime file is 16/9 NTSC but when i play ti like in QT or on the web it is squeezed to 4/3.

When you export you need to adjust for the aspect ratio. For example, export 640x360...for that is 16:9. 640x480 is 4:3.

Why do premium movie channels alter the widescreen aspect ratio?

Why do channels like HBO HD and Cinemax HD change the aspect ratio of movies? I have seen movies that I own on dvd or blu-ray that are 2:35:1 or 2:40:1 aspect ratio (meaning very wide and you see some thin black bars at the top and bottom of your screen) but when they are broadcast on these movie channels it looks like the films are partially panned & scanned down to a 1:85:1 ratio (not as wide and the bars are gone).
This is really stupid, and the movies are not being shown in their full widescreen orginal presentation. What do they have to gain by cutting off parts of the picture? I have noticed some channels like showtime don't do this, but most do. Obviously this isn't verizons doing its the channel providers, but it's annoying.
And what's with all the logos all over the premium channels nowadays? These are paid channels the screen should be clear of any and all logos and any add overlays. If I want to know the channel and rating I'm watching I'll just press the guide button, it's overkill.

Export using H.264, file won't retain aspect ratio

Hi,
I'm attempting to export a file using Compressor, and the "H.264 LAN Streaming" setting. The finished file doesn't retain the original aspect ratio (16:9) but creates a file that has is 4:3.
After several attempts and checking all the obvious stuff, I started thinking maybe it has something to do with using video with different frame rates in this project. My camera is an HVX-200 and I shot primarily in 720/24p but also had some shots at 60 fps. Just wondering if this could be causing any problems.
It's probably some simple thing I've just completely overlooked, but I'd sure appreciate any help. The couple of times I've posted here I've received great input, so thanks in advance.

You have to set the dimensions. DVCPRO HD is an anamporphic format, so it will export anamorphic. Unless you give it 16:9 dimensions. Like 640x360.

Exporting movie with 2.35.1 aspect ratio

I used filmic pro on my 4S to capture 24fps video along with a 2.35.1 overlay guide so my video composing will work once everything is edited. I have edited the video in iMovie with 1920x1080 24fps project settings and now I want to export it. Some videos I have seen recommend putting a picture of 2 black bars over the video but I think this is a waste of time and space since I will have to render the 2 black bars.
What would be the correct way of exporting my video with a 2.35.1 aspect ratio in iMovie? It would also be good if there are guides for Final Cut, and Adobe Premiere since I intend to try these out too.

iMovie will render your movie in 16:9 (1920x1080) or 4:3 (standard def), since those are the sizes of television screens.
To show a movie in 2.35:1, you will need to use the set the aspect ratio of the project to 16:9, and then, use the Rotate, Crop, Ken Burns tool on the middle Toolbar to set each clip to FIT. You can then Share the movie, and it will create the black bars for you.
If you want to show your movie on a device (like a computer screen or a web page) that is not constrained by the 16:9 or 4:3 limitation, you may be able to process your movie in QuickTime Pro to trim to exact dimensions, but you should check in the QuickTime Pro discussions to make sure, because I have not tried this myself.

How can I import .mov footage with original pixel aspect ratio?

So the footage is 720x480 Square Pixels (1.0), 29.97 fps, progressive .mov but when I import it into Premiere Pro, they come up compressed as D1/DV NTSC (0.9091) automatically. When I try to Interpret Footage, it simply adds black bars. Why can't it just import correctly? When I preview the original footage, it plays back correctly but the preview inside Premiere Pro shows the distorted version... Please and thank you!!!

The suggestion about "new item" above was short. Here's the "full" version. In the Project Panel, go to the lower right corner ... click on the "New Item" Icon ... as shown here:
The first item on the pop-up menu that will appear should be "Sequence" ... click on it and just say ok at the next screen without even reading it. It's irrelevant, really.
Then going back to your project panel (we assume you've already imported your footage into it) click & drag a clip from the proj. panel to the timeline, or move one from the "Source monitor" to the timeline ... you should get a pop-up asking if you want the timeline changed to your footage, or your footage changed to the timeline. Take the timeline/sequence settings changed to match footage, and go.
That SHOULD take care of the problem in the vast majority of cases. It is such a simple fix, and so often the easiest and "correctist", that it's worth a try. Navigating the choices of setting up sequences is best left for those people who say, study GPU algorithms for a couple hours before going to bed for the sheer exhilaration of it ... unless, of course, PrPro actuall does a face-plant with your footage. But it mostly works good at it ... once you just let it ... so you might give that a try, takes what ... 20 seconds to see if it works?

2 of the same FCP Movie files but in Compressor one is 4:3 other 16:9

Hi,
I am trying to compress 2 FCP movie files to MEPG-2 for a DVD. I want the file 16:9
Both files are:
Dimensions: 1920x1080
Codecs: HDV 1080i60, (little Endian) timecode.
When I drop them in Compressor and look at the preview, one file is 16:9 and the other looks 4:3.
The info of the video that is 4:3 says:
Encoded Bounds 1440x1080
Display bounds 1920x1080
Pixel Axpect Ratio: HDV 1080i (16:9)
The other file is:
Encoded Bounds 1920x1080
Display bounds 2560x1080
Pixel Axpect Ratio: HDV 1080i (16:9)
I only have the FCP movie file (not the original timeline.) I have tried re-encoding the FCP movie file and still get the same 4:3 look.
How do I get the "Display bounds" to be 2560x1080?

with regard to the movie that displays an incorrect aspect ratio:
In Compressor *Preview window* go to the middle of the top>open that popdown menu and select/check "Correct for pixel aspect ratio".

Using "One Step DVD from Movie" on my IMac 10.8.6 using Verbatim DVD-R ("Life Series") 4.7 GB 16X 120, I get a wide angle version of my two minute story rather than the 3X4 standard aspect ratio that I normally get and want. Help!

While using "One Step DVD from Movie" using DVD-R Verbatim ("Life Series" 4.7 16 X 120 min) on my IMac 10.6.8 I get a wide angle aspect ratio on the DVD not the standard 3X4 aspect ratio. The Quicktime Movie is is standard 3X4 aspect ratio and the video video footage is standard 3X4 aspect ratio? Advice will be greatly appreciated.

Try this basic troubleshooting fix :
1 - delete the IDVD preference file, com.apple.iDVD.plist, that resides in your
User/Home()/Library/ Preferences folder.
2 - delete IDVD'S cache file, Cache.db, that is located in your
User/Home()/Library/Caches/com.apple.iDVD folder.

3 - reboot.
4 - launch IDVD and try again.
Personally I would not the the one step method but create the iDVD project from scratch so you can make sure the widescreen option is not selected in the preferences and you can follow this workflow:
Once you have the project as you want it save it as a disk image via the File ➙ Save as Disk Image menu option. This will separate the encoding process from the burn process.
To check the encoding mount the disk image and launch DVD Player and play it. If it plays OK with DVD Player the encoding was good.
Then burn to disk with Disk Utility or Toast at the slowest speed available (2x-4x) to assure the best burn quality. Always use top quality media: Verbatim, Maxell or Taiyo Yuden DVD-R are the most recommended in these forums.

16x9 aspect ratio quicktime movie switches to 4x3 in idvd

I have a quicktime movie that has a 16x9 aspect ratio. In Info the dimensions show up as 720x480 (853x480) and when opened in Quicktime it is opening in the correct aspect ratio it was created. After bringing the Quicktime movie into an idvd project that was set up for 16x9, when I click on the movie, it shows up as a 4x3 movie, and the images are noticeably distorted. Any ideas on how to resolve this? Thanks.

A solution is to use something called Anamorphizer that sets the file's widescreen flag so that it is recognized as anamorphically squeezed widescreen.

Make sure Quicktime 7 is open before you try Anamorphizer. (NOTE: You MUST use Quicktime 7 and NOT Quicktime X)
Place a copy of your movie clip in a new folder and drag that clip over the Anamorphizer icon. This should create a second file in that folder that start with Anamorphic- This is the reference movie you drag-and-drop into iDVD. Note that your clip in that folder (which is the movie the reference movie points to, must not be moved or deleted).

Does iWeb support .wmv movie files?

Ok guys i'm fairly new to the iWeb.
I have a basic qustion that I dont seem to be able to find the answer for on any help links within the application or Quicktime for that matter as it always revert you back to saving you movie files as QuickTime .mov files.
Is there a way you can import .wmv movie files so that our friendly PC user's can view without having to download QuickTime for PC.

iWeb writes page code that calls the QuickTime browser plug-in.
QuickTime on a PC can't open WMP formats.
All you can do is use "link to file" to upload your .wmv file.
