IWeb true 'tips'...?

Is it just my system, (of my iWeb version 1.1.2) that doesn’t like the idea(s) of the instructions in this “tips” link..:
http://www.mac.com/web/en/Tips/013C4180-4787-4847-BAAB-319222AFC652.html
I am presuming that the wording of..: "... drag the album onto the template..." refers to the newly created iWeb page.    ... ?
When I try that, I get an iWeb alert demanding that I select another template - particularly, a 'photos' page template.
If I try to drag the ‘Library’ from iPhoto directly to a new blank iWeb page, I get garbage.
What’s wrong with this picture..?
all assistance appreciated.!

varkgirl, thanx for jumping (back) in here.
I’m not much less confused, tho.
Well... you are trying to make iWeb do something it doesn't do. And you don't seem to want to do anything relating to code, so there really isn't much we can help you with. iWeb is a limited, version 1.x program.
let me preface with..: NON dotMac server setup.
If this is the case, you can't link directly to a slideshow. You might want to take a look at some other options:
http://www.rowan-cottage.co.uk/Site/SimpleViewer.html
http://web.mac.com/varkgirl/iWeb/Slideshows
I appreciate your comment about large windows
will “take visitors away from your site”.
Specifically for that consideration, I have been
trying to constrain my page sizes to 800 px wide and
most not more than 700 px high.
Not sure what you are aiming for by doing this...
If you want to avoid having visitors leave your site, try this:
http://web.mac.com/varkgirl/iWeb/Aardvarkland/Open%20links%20in%20new%20window.h tml
Also, I have been
perplexed by the default slideshow window’s design
of very large “thumbnails” cascading down for the
full album’s content, thus creating a Very long
page - with apparently no recourse to size
adjustment or hiding. -( ! )-
This is not the slideshow window. This is the photo page. The slideshow window is a popup.
Here is a quote from me in your previous thread about popups if you want to make something else a popup window:
You would need to go into the code after publishing and look for
href="nameofpage_files/nameofphoto.jpg"
change it to
href="#" onclick="javascript:window.open('nameofpagefiles/nameofphoto.jpg','blank','width=x,height=y,toolbar=0,menubar=0,resizable=0,location=0,status=0,scr ollbars=0,directories=0'); return false;"
Where x and y are the dimensions of the photo. You would need to do this for each photo you link to. This will make them open in their own window when clicked.
This would also work with any link... href="http://blahblahblah" etc etc etc
If it can be done as I outlined above, and then
hide the page from view, then how/where would a
viewer find a “Start Slideshow” button to activate.?
The link in my other post in this thread would work and you could use any image as a link. However, as I said at the begining of this post, you can't really do this with non-.Mac photo pages/slideshows
I’d like to offer a way to directly
access/initiate the slideshow from either of two
links that would be on two different pages.
My preferred design/construction base would
be to have such slideshow activating link on the
first ‘home’ page, and also on a second page -(one
with a numbered custom map). On this second -(“photo
map”)- page a viewer could select any of the small
numbered thumbnails to blow up momentarily in any
order of preference. OR they could elect to view
them in the sequenced slideshow.
A secondary priority preference would be to have
the slideshow in a non-full-screen, side window -
but that seems to involve second or third party
scripts/app’ns. Not so bad, just another
complication, eh.?
As I see it so far, the options are..:
full screen, large window default
slideshow
smaller window, add in app’n
for either of those just above possibilities,
modifying some of iWeb’s code for any of..:
smaller window, added in app’n
any customizing of such
Some of the questions about the first set above
are..:
how to create links directly activating
either the default or an “added-in” app’n
how either can be adjusted to close upon
completion - or maybe it closes by default
whether either require the viewer to have
some form of “Flash” or “Flash Player”
if “Flash”, how to incorporate it into
either the default or an “added-in” app’n
Wow... not sure where to go with all that... I did give you some info about your map idea in your other thread.
http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?messageID=3893029&#3893029
You can put anything in an iframe, again you have to be willing to edit code.
lliary questions..:
What’s the trick/procedure for ‘hiding’ a
page but allowing it to still be accessed..?
My assumption of the Inspector’s “Page”
selection of not checking the option of “Include
page in navigation menu” was that it would be
completely unavailable after downloading. ?
wrong..?
That is the right way to do it. It will still be available, just not a link in the navigation bar.
Finally, What manner of complexity for
inclusion of a music file with slideshow
-( which might be relegated to a
separate post.? )-
Do a search on the forum (upper right hand corner) - I believe several people have posted about this recently.

  • IWeb '09 and WordPress blogging

    As a volunteer, I currently have two web-sites for separate annual public events published by iWeb and hosted by GoDaddy. Each event is autonomous from the other. One event is for a history-based reunion in the summer, the other for a winter festival.
    If I were to create a blog on WordPress.com (which I assume to be a free service) for each event, is there a way to connect the WordPress.com blogs to their respective event web-sites, so that each site could show a "blog" page in the header and allow a visitor to visit the blog without leaving the event's web-site?

  • Iweb issue - question marks ??

    Hello
    I'm a new user to iweb and this is my first post.
    Basically I have been getting used to the iweb app for a few days now and have started putting a basic website tigether as a kind of online cv for the work I do.
    I currently have a small amount of web space (55meg) with my broadband account and have been using this to publish and test my web site.
    I have been using Safari, Firefox and Internet Explorer 5.2 on my G5 to view the web site.
    Generally everything looks fine, but the odd question mark symbol keeps popping up. Ironically the site seems to look best in IE, but question mark symbols show up in all three browsers.
    I wondered if anyone may be able to help with this ?
    Many thanks in advance

    Hi rdfmusic and welcome to the iWeb forum!
    Your problem is a common one when publishing to a non .Mac server but is easily fixed. Tom Gewecke has created a page that addresses this with the solution:
    http://homepage.mac.com/thgewecke/iwebchars.html
    Tom has also set up a page with links to a lot of tips on using iWeb:

  • IPhoto Album updating iWeb Album page

    OK .. I'm lost! I created an iWeb Album page and a new matching iPhoto album to put the photos in. Now I've added new photos to the iPhoto album and they don't show up in iWeb. There is a lot of work on the iWeb page with a lot of descriptions etc and I don't want to have to delete the page and drag in the new updated album. What am I missing? How to I sync any newly added pictures in the iPhoto album with the iWeb album?
    Thanks...

    The iWeb pages don't automatically update like iPhoto Web Galleries do. You will have to add the new photos to the iWeb photo page and republish that page.
    If you were using a iPhoto Web Gallery in an iWeb page then all you would have to do is click on the publish button in iPhoto and the gallery would be updated when accessed via iWeb.
    TIP: For insurance against the iPhoto database corruption that many users have experienced I recommend making a backup copy of the Library6.iPhoto (iPhoto.Library for iPhoto 5 and earlier) database file and keep it current. If problems crop up where iPhoto suddenly can't see any photos or thinks there are no photos in the library, replacing the working Library6.iPhoto file with the backup will often get the library back. By keeping it current I mean backup after each import and/or any serious editing or work on books, slideshows, calendars, cards, etc. That insures that if a problem pops up and you do need to replace the database file, you'll retain all those efforts. It doesn't take long to make the backup and it's good insurance.
    I've created an Automator workflow application (requires Tiger or later), iPhoto dB File Backup, that will copy the selected Library6.iPhoto file from your iPhoto Library folder to the Pictures folder, replacing any previous version of it. It's compatible with iPhoto 6 and 7 libraries and Tiger and Leopard. iPhoto does not have to be closed to run the application, just idle. You can download it at Toad's Cellar. Be sure to read the Read Me pdf file.
    Note: There now an Automator backup application for iPhoto 5 that will work with Tiger or Leopard.

  • Buy & Sell Tools for new iWeb site

    Hello,
    I've had a Hompage website business for sometime, but with iWeb and the fact that somehow my business can now be Googled has made me take a hard look at what I created and how I am going to shape it into a sucessful small business.
    My biggest concern is that I do not have any real buy & sell tools to go with my business. I ran across a mention in this forum about RegNow, but I honestly cannot figure out what they actually do. I want some legitimate enterprise to provide the tools I need so my credit card customers can buy from me. I would also like for my customers to have the ability of tracking their order as well.
    Any comments or suggestions will be greatly appreciated.
    Phillip

    You could just set-up a Paypal on your site and that would be easy and effective. Look here to find out how to get a Paypal button on your site:

  • How to add widgets to iweb...

    hi guys, i tried looking for this but so far i haven't found a solution, i'm building a website using iweb and i want to have a twitter widget, calender (found on in the forum) and a map which i can tag with photos for a vacation i am going on. is there anyone who can help or give me pointers.

    I can help you with the calendar. This demo page has one that was published by iCal and embedded into the page. It also has two ways to embed a Google map.
    As for the twitter widget I can't help you, too many generations removed from it. If you can get the code from a twitter page you can add it to a HTML Snippet and iFrame code in iWeb.
    TIP: For insurance against the iPhoto database corruption that many users have experienced I recommend making a backup copy of the Library6.iPhoto (iPhoto.Library for iPhoto 5 and earlier) database file and keep it current. • Latest revision of the FAQ in progress - help needed!

    Thought I would start a new thread...
    I need some help, guys I am looking for some helpers on the following topics, so feel free to chime in:
    -Text/PNG issues
    -Viewing iWeb sites on a PC
    -A generic list of "fixes" when iWeb is acting buggy - i.e. deleting plists, reinstalling the direct download etc
    I am working on adding:
    -.Mac vs Publish to folder
    -Whatever else comes to my mind...
    Here's the latest revision, let me know your thoughts. My hope is to slim it down to 10 questions/categories. I don't know if the Hosts will keep it as one post or possible separate, but I figure it is best to be broad rather than narrow...

    http://www.apple.com/support/iweb/
    Still no luck? Post your question in the forum! We are all happy to help!
    Here are (or will be eventually) our Top 10 FAQs:
    1. My hard drive crashed, how do I restore a site from my iDisk/published folder? How do I backup my iWeb site(s)? How do I transfer my iWeb work to another computer? How do I transfer my old website made in Homepage/another html editor to iWeb?
    Your iWeb data is stored, not in your actual html files, but in a file called Domain.sites, which is stored in your Home/Library/Application Support/iWeb folder. You should backup this file whenever you make big changes to your site, because if it gets lost or damaged, you will have to start all over. For more info, try these links:
    http://homepage.mac.com/thgewecke/iwebdata.html
    http://web.mac.com/will.englefield/iWeb/WillG4PB/Where.html
    http://web.mac.com/will.englefield/iWeb/WillG4PB/Backup.html
    Important: You CANNOT restore an iWeb site from the published html pages in your iDisk or a published folder. Publishing to a folder is NOT a backup. You CANNOT use iWeb to edit existing web sites/pages created in other applications.
    If you want to move your Domain.sites file to another computer, try putting it on a flash drive. Be sure to keep a current copy on the flash drive if you plan to move it back and forth between two or more computers. For more info, try these links:

    2. I am having trouble publishing to .Mac. What’s wrong?
    Keep trying! Publishing errors come and go over time. Don’t give up, and don’t do anything drastic! For more info, look here:

    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=303927
    3. How do I find my iWeb site on .Mac?
    Your site is published to the “Web” folder on your iDisk. The address for this site is
    http://web.mac.com/yourusername
    If you have more than one site, they will be located at
    http://web.mac.com/yourusername/iWeb/nameofsite1
    http://web.mac.com/yourusername/iWeb/nameofsite2
    etc etc etc…
    The index.html file for your “short URL” (http://web.mac.com/yourusername) will always forward to site1, which will be the top site in your site organizer (column on the left hand side in iWeb).

    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?path=iWeb/1.1/en/bld1082.html
    4. How can I keep more than one site but only work on/publish one at a time?
    Yes, but this requires some “domain splitting” – duplicating the Domain.sites file and slimming down each copy to contain only one site. More info and some instructions are available here:
    http://web.mac.com/mark8heaton/iWeb/DomainSeparation
    Also, here is a free application called iWebSites that will help automate switching from one domain to another:
    http://mistergregg.com/cocoadrillosoftware/iWebSites/iWebSites%20Home.html
    5. How do I add _ to my iWeb page? Where can I find additional help?
    You can add just about anything you could add to a regular website to an iWeb site, if you don’t mind doing some post-publish editing of your html files.
    You can open the html files generated by iWeb in any text or html editor. In TextEdit, to view the code in an HTML file, choose File > Open and select "Ignore rich text commands." Then locate the .html file and click Open.
    Here’s how to find your html files:
    If you publish to dot mac, mount your idisk using the "go" menu in Finder. This will place your idisk on the desktop.
    Then go to iDisk/Web/Sites/iWeb/Sitename/Pagename.html
    If you publish to a folder, try looking in your Sites folder of your home folder.
    If you don’t want to look at the html code yourself, try MassReplaceIt (http://www.hexmonkeysoftware.com), a free find/replace utility.

    5. Can I publish to my own web server? What are the differences between “Publish to .Mac” and “Publish to a folder”?
    When you publish to .Mac, your site(s) are uploaded via Web-DAV to your iDisk/.Mac account. When you publish to a folder, you select a folder on your hard drive to publish your site(s) to and then upload to your own webspace via FTP. When you publish to a folder, you lose some of the features of iWeb .Mac sites. Here is a list of the features that differ between the two:

    Here are some sites with tips and tricks for adding additional code to your published site, or tips on using iWeb in general:

  • Default the sender name while sending email from discoverer 11g viewer

    Hi,
    Can we put a default value of a sender in the email which are sent from discoverer 11g viewer.??

    Hello
    Yes, you can do this but you have to edit one of the UIX files to do it. The following is taken from my new Discoverer 11h Handbook which will be out later in the year.
    If you want to force users to send Discoverer reports from a prespecified e-mail account, use the following workflow:
    Locate this file: $MIDDLEWARE_HOME/user_projects/domains/ClassicDomain/servers/WLS_DISCO/tmp/_WL_user/discoverer_11.1.1.2.0/<tmpfolder>/war/Email.uix
    NOTE: In my system the name of the tmpfolder was 51oeh7. You may have a different name for <tmpfile> on your system and so may need to do a search for Email.uix.
    Make a safe backup of Email.uix.
    Find the following line and add the information in bold, changing [email protected] with your default email address:
    <contents>
    <messageTextInput required="yes" name="sender" disabled="true"
    tip="[email protected]" columns="40"
    prompt="${uix.data.nls['email.text.sender']}" text="[email protected]"/>
    NOTE:  In the above, you will be replacing text="${uix.eventResult.sender}" with your default email address like: text="myemail.mycompany.com"
    Find the following line and add the line in bold below it:
    <formValue name="event" value="sendEmail" />
    <formValue name="sender" [email protected] />
    NOTE: Make sure the domain name you provide is the same domain you are using for the SMTP server; otherwise, your Discoverer Viewer users will not be able to send e-mail.
    Take a backup of the modified file and place it somewhere safe.
    Stop and restart the WLS_DISCO server in the WebLogic Server Administration Console.
    Notes concerning editing of UIX files:
    Never make any changes without first backing up the UIX file you intend to work on. You need to go slowly and carefully, making backups as you go and trying your modifications on a test system first.
    Any changes you make to a UIX file will not be supported by Oracle, and if you run into any problems with changes you make to a UIX file, you will be on your own, which is why you need a backup.
    If you need future support, you will need to be able to prove that the issue you are encountering is not because of any changes you have made. You will basically need to have a clean instance to prove that the issue is still there.
    Any upgrades or patches that you subsequently apply may overwrite any custom changes that you have made to the UIX files. It will be your responsibility to keep copies of any changes you have made, and it will be your responsibility to make sure these changes are still valid after any upgrade or patch.
    NOTE: I cannot be held responsible if you tamper with your UIX files and mess up your system. You have been warned! That said, there are many examples for editing UIX files on Oracle’s Support site. So long as you are careful and heed the warnings mentioned, you should be fine
    Best wishes
    Michael

  • .mac website question

    I know this is off topic, but I want to build a website in iweb. I know you have to use .mac to publish it very easy. IS there a way to do it with out it? Also do you have to publish it to the .mac site, or can you publish it to your own domain? Ya know. like www.whatever.com instead of the .mac blah blah blah?
    Thanks
    rick

    Hi Rick,
    Yes, it is possible. For a detailed explanation Tom Gewecke (a frequent contributor) has prepared a User Tip on just such a procedure. You can view it here:
    http://homepage.mac.com/thgewecke/iwebserver.html
    If you have further iWeb related questions it would be best if you post them in the iWeb forum:

  • Scaling graphic-primitive's points only

    Hi.
    Is there any possibility to scale 2D Graphic primitives (Lines, Arcs, Rectangles, etc..) in a way that only the primitive's edge points are affected?
    My problem is as follows:
    All primitives in my Panel (for example, a line, which is drawn by g.drawLine(....)) do react when a user resizes the panel/window. If the windowsize grows, so does the thickness of the line.
    I just want the endpoints to be scaled (ie. moved/scaled in my coordinate system), not the line itself.
    My code goes like this:
    public void paint(Graphics g)
    Graphics2D g2 = (Graphics2D) g;
    g2.scale(scaleX, scaleY);
    g2.drawLine(..........coords......);
    Where the variables scaleX/Y are computed relative to the size of the panel (and relative to the width/height
    presented by the current view of my coordinate system).
    The endpoints of my primitives are scaled correctly of course, but how can I avoid this "zooming" effect which kinda ***** up the whole drawing.
    Thanks in advance.

    Run this code and resize the JFrame:
    import java.awt.*;
    import java.awt.geom.*;
    import javax.swing.*;
    public class X extends JPanel {
        private Shape shape; //drawn within unit circle, in my example
        public X() {
            GeneralPath gp = new GeneralPath();
            //this must be my luck star :-)
            double fifth = 2*Math.PI/5;
            gp.moveTo(1,0);
            gp.lineTo((float)Math.cos(2*fifth), (float)Math.sin(2*fifth));
            gp.lineTo((float)Math.cos(4*fifth), (float)Math.sin(4*fifth));
            gp.lineTo((float)Math.cos(fifth), (float)Math.sin(fifth));
            gp.lineTo((float)Math.cos(3*fifth), (float)Math.sin(3*fifth));
            gp.closePath();
            shape = gp;
        protected void paintComponent(Graphics g) {
            super.paintComponent(g);
            Graphics2D g2 = (Graphics2D) g;
            int w = getWidth(), h = getHeight();
            double scale = 0.90 * Math.min(w,h);
            AffineTransform xform = AffineTransform.getTranslateInstance(w/2, h/2);
            xform.scale(scale/2, scale/2);
            g2.draw(xform.createTransformedShape(shape));
        public static void main(String[] args) {
            JFrame f = new JFrame("");
            f.setDefaultCloseOperation(JFrame.EXIT_ON_CLOSE);
            f.getContentPane().add(new X());
            f.setSize(400,300);
            f.setLocationRelativeTo(null);
            f.setVisible(true);
    }Tip:
    I never change the AffineTransform associated with the graphics object like this:
    g2.scale(scaleX, scaleY);(Well, besides the occasional translate)
    As you've already seen this rescales everthing, including stroke width. It will also resize fonts in an unpleasing way, images, texture paints, etc...
    Instead, I take the Shapes, construct a seperate AffineTransform and pass the shape through it, as demonstrated above.

  • The perfect terminal....

    O great sages, please bestwo unto me the perfect terminal.
    After using every terminal conceived from gnome-terminal to st, i still haven't found 'the one' that I will settle down and marry.  This is due to a number of reasons, but I feel like my needs are not too outlandish.  Yet it seems that right when I've found the perfect one there is something horribly wrong lurking underneath.
    This is what I need and use daily:
    dwm
    irssi (alt + 1,2,3, etc )
    finch
    ssh
    various other primarily-console-based programs
    the ubiquitous "lightweight" feel on any application
    true type fonts
    This is what I'd like:
    real transparency, but pseudo will (and does) suffice.
    clickable links
    full clipboard support.
    I know the urxvt-lovers are going to sound off on this immediately so I'll make a disclaimer:  I use urxvtd/c as my primary terminal.  Yes, I like it.  Yes, I know it has many of these features.  It does, however, lack the ability to cooperate with xcompmgr in any way, and it doesn't work with finch, which is very important to me.
    So my question is this:  what terminal can I use?  What will work with finch and irssi's Alt+1,2,3 window feature (this is the most important)?  Xterm doesn't seem to support this feature, nor does it even have pseudo-transparency.  Will I ever find true transparency in dwm?  Basically, I want to dump urxvt because of the xcompmgr issue and some other things that annoy me, but I can't because of the console-tabbed browsing I've become accustomed to.  What to do?
    Any help is appreciated

    Wow I didn't expect this many responses
    sand_man and XFire - I've tried those two in the past and am really not a fan of vte terminals in general.  Although I've been known to use terminator perhaps more than I should (I'm pretty anti-GNOME anything)
    hbekel:  Thank you!  that works nicely.  Seems as if xterm is a front-runner for me again.
    B and mythus:  I'm not a fan of the Xfce menubar or the dependencies it pulls, but it is nice, and worth another look.
    jac and nixpunk:  My arrow keys don't work properly in finch.  I've seen the help floating around about exporting TERM in .bash_profile, but I never could get it to work.  And also, isn't exporting the value $TERM bad?
    tomk:  irssi works fine for me in urxvt as well, including alt+1,2, etc.
    Aprz and JohannesSM64:  unfortunately this isn't the problem.  I use Mod4Key as my meta in dwm (gotta love using the Windows key for THAT!)  The problem only arises in xterm.  But hbekel fixed the issue with his XTerm*metaSendsEscape: True tip.
    moljac024 and sHyLoCk: Whenever i run xcompmgr with urxvt, the terminals go blank.  I'm sure it's just a tweak in the .Xdefaults file then.  I'd like to discontinue use of urxvt if possible, though.
    Now my only question is this:  Is there any way to get TRUE transparency in dwm with xterm?  I'd like to use xterm exclusively if possible becuase of the easy config in .Xdefaults and the stock-standard feel of it.  So yes, I'm weird.  But I can't be the only one with these hopes and dreams.
    In Openbox, the devilspie trick works nicely on any program I wished to provide transparency via transset(-df).  In dwm, devilspie doesn't work.  Anyone have any tips and tricks?
    Thank you all for your help, I appreciate it

  • Column with bug when exporting photos to html

    When I select, say, 20 photos and choose file/ export to html document, the default number of
    photos (Columns) per row is three. If I change it to five, the html document keeps a 33% column width
    instead of changing it to 20%. This did not happen in an my older version. Is this a bug that could be corrected in the next update?
    My actual version is iphoto- '08 7.1.4 (371)

    Welcome to the Apple Discussions. Change the thumbnail size and that should get you to a narrower column. I find the build in HTML page builder to be clumsy to use with the thumbnail size always reverting back to the 240 size. Changing the thumbnail size will let you adjust the column width.
    Have you tired the free iPhoto plugins, Flash Album Exporter or SimpleViewer which create flash based galleries and slideshows? They are a lot nicer than the build in web page builder in iPhoto. Or iWeb?
Just put the application in the Dock and click on it whenever you want to backup the dB file. iPhoto does not have to be closed to run the application, just idle. You can download it at Toad's Cellar. Be sure to read the Read Me pdf file.
    Note: There's now an Automator backup application for iPhoto 5 that will work with Tiger or Leopard.

  • Activity viewer?

    Is there any type of activity viewer or progress indicator for the publishing of an iWeb site? Sure would be great to know how long I'm in for when making updates or changes to the site. I would like to build on my blog...but right now it takes so bloody long for the site to upload...I'm discouraged from making updates. Anyone else have this issue?
