J2EE Non-Portability

Is there anyway that an ear file can be built that makes it impossible to run or view without a key? The use of this would be that if I give someone an ear file, they cannot regenerate all the code without the proper cipher key. Does anyone know if this is possible or if there are tools out there that can do this?
I want noone to be able to view\run my ear file (or the contents) without a key.

Cross-posted, so don't even bother answering it here too!

  • Difference between portable and non-portable HDD

I'm about to purchase an external hard disk drive. Is there any difference in functionality or reliability between a portable HDD and a non-portable drive? I like the size and portability of the smaller drives but it doesn't really need to be portable. The drive will be connected to my iMac for Time Machine backups, so it will be good if it can power down when not in use.

In general, non-portable drives require external power and use 3.5” drive mechanisms. Portables use 2.5” mechanisms and can be powered by the USB, Firewire or Thunderbolt bus (draining a laptop’s battery). Non-portable drives can be had in larger capacities.
I suggest you use something other than Time Machine. Try SuperDuper or Carbon Copy Cloner since they’ll create bootable clones. You can’t boot from a Time Machine backup. TM is ok as a secondary or tertiary backup, but I’d never trust it as my only backup.

  • Where are the non J2EE Templates ???

I'm posting this after hours of frustration. A little background is required:
I've been working on a project utilizing Java 2D to manipulate 16 bit images. In dealing with a BufferedImage.TYPE_CUSTOM image originating on a CT scanner, I've come across what I believe might be a JAva 2D bug.
So I searched the Java site for info about the forums and bug reports, and realized that I had to get a 30 day Standard subscription, which of course meant installing Java Studio Creator. The hoops I had to jump through to do that I will not go into here. (I had been using Netbeans 3.6 for my development.)
So, I was finally able to log a report. I included the code which led to the problem (a pipeline of JAI.create calls on the original image, which could, by the way, be displayed without any exceptions). Looking at my email this morning I found that I am required to provide information to recreate the bug in Studio Creator in order for it to be examined. This has a couple of complications:
    1. The image in question is obtained from an image file formatted according to the DICOM protocol
    2. Reading the image file and converting it to a BufferedImage requires the use of a third party Image I/O plugin.
I can provide both of these if required, but first back to the issue at hand.
I whittled the bug scenario down such that I have a single class which can be used to recreate the error scenario. All I need to do now is create a simple non-J2EE, non-web, non-GUI "standalone executable" project. This appears to be impossible with Studio Creator "out of the box". A template is demanded, and the only one available is the J2EE one, which of course leads to an inundation of JSP, Beans, JSF etc clutter.
IS THERE NO WAY TO JUST USE THIS PRODUCT TO JUST COMPILE AND RUN A SIMPLE JAVA CLASS???? I suppose this information can be found somewhere, but I don't look forward to digging around for many more hours to locate what seems to me a basic question for any IDE
If not, is there ANY way to communicate with Sun regarding possible bugs? Hell, I'd be happy to pay $100 just to log and get feedback on this one issue. I'm contracting on an hourly basis, and this has already cost me more than that.
Thanks for any advice, opinion, mild abuse, etc.

    Hi Bob,
Sun Java Studio Creator is a tool for building web applications. To complie and run a simple java class NetBeans is the tool to use. NetBeans 4.1 is available and you could try this.
You should be able to log a bug with your trial license. If not you can post it here in the forum and we will file the bug on your behalf.
    Cheers
    Giri :-)

  • IDE-specific files and portability

I am looking for an IDE that will produce files that are portable among different J2EE servers. It seems that some IDEs produce the files (other than java's generic files like .class, .jws...) that won't run on the J2EE server other than the IDE vendor's. Correct me if I am wrong please....
I am trying BEA weblogic workshop, it seems like a proper environment for my project, but I am not sure the application will work on the J2EE server other than BEA's (for example on JRun) , since BEA workshop produces some specific files(e.g. jcx, jsr files)? The same issue is seen in JBuilder (it also produces files with suspicious portability, specific Database connectors, etc...) and I am concerned about the portability of the IDE-specific files among the servers.
Can someone help me with IDEs? I hope my thesis of non-portable files is not true.

When you build a WAR file, it is built for a specific web server. There is no standard way to deploy such an application between servers.
There may be a tools which supports a generic deployment. Try google.

  • JBoss or J2EE

We are a part of a studygroup in an university.
At the last semester we're going to make a project using J2EE, but we don't know whether we should use suns J2EE or JBoss.
Which one will be the easiest to use?
We only have a 3 month period to learn how to use it.
We've been working with JAVA for 2 years.
We would also very much appreciate it, if anyone could recommend web-sites or litterature about them.

I would generally recommend the Sun's J2EE RI, since it is generally easier to work with and applications developed under the Reference Implementations will be pretty much guaranteed to work on other J2EE compliant app. servers. I can't say the same thing about JBoss, which is quite a bit harder to get going with due to its extreme modularity and reliance on non-portable features that can lock your app in to JBoss. In addition the J2EE RI seems to be much better documented, which is a huge plus when you're starting up with developement. On the other hand much of JBoss documentation is offered for a fee. JBoss is a good product, but for your purposes I believe the J2EE RI would be a better choice.

  • Running portable .exe's on the Mac

Back when I was playing around with Ubuntu Linux, I found that I was able to run most portable apps - including my PStart menu launcher - in Wine.  With CrossOver Mac, I seem to be having some difficulty doing so; the program seems to want me to package apps before I can use them, which suggests to me that they only considered non-portable apps.  Am I mistaken about this?  Is there a way to run .exe's straight off my flash drive in CrossOver Mac, or is there an alternative product that is more "PnP" than CrossOver?  Thanks.

Update:  I tried Wine, and it does not require you to "bottle" the app.  Don't know whether CrossOver would be compatible with more non-portable apps, but no matter; I'm right where I need to be now.

  • Difference between portable external hardive & powered external hard drive

I have read many post discussing buying external hard drives, either portable or with a power cord. what is the pro and cons of choosing a portable external drives versus non portable ext. drive. My wife has almost filled up my imac with movies and tv shows. I recommended a 1TB external drive with a power plug that sit next to my computer. We just purchased a macbook pro 2009 for her and now I'm learning it a slightly different world with her having the ability to move around the house or take her computer to work. So maybe my suggestion is not the best. Can anyone share some suggestions for us?

Is there any problem/cons with the bus powered ext drive using the laptop for power and also backing up data? does the laptop need to stay awake so the bus powered ext drive can backup, since it drawing it power from the laptop?
No problems, no. The limitation is that bus-powered drives are usually smaller/slower for the price than AC-powered drives. You can't get a 3.5" 2 TB, 10000 rpm diameter bus-powered drive, for example.
Yes, the MBP needs to be awake to power the drive. But that's not a 'problem' since the MBP itself needs to be awake for a backup to run, too.

  • Network home structure vs portable home structure

I have two principle groups: Faculty and Students.
I wish to use portable homes with the faculty, and just network homes for the students (as there is just too much support issues with portable homes with the students)
The portable home structure needs to mirror the structure of the faculty's local home. But I would prefer not to have the student's network home look like their local home. (as they will get the network home confused with their local home). I understand that I can alter the template (/System/Library/UserTemplate/) which defines what the network home will look like, but I believe this will alter the structure of any portable homes which are created for the faculty as well.
Is there any means of having two different templates, one for use with portable homes, and one for use with network (non-portable) homes?

Not to be a "wet blanket" here, but are you sure you want students to have network homes?
Our system is set up with faculty using either PHD or Network homes depending on their computer type (laptop users get the PHD, desktop users network homes). Students are authenticated to be able to log into the system, but they don't get any kind of network home.
We provide a SAN that students can save work to, but it is completely erased each semester. The lab computers are also imaged at least once a semester, so anything that a student saves there is also deleted.
The reason is simple: storage space. With 400 students working on 24 computers, it would quickly become a data nightmare. Imagine if each of those students had just 10 gigs of storage online (that would be about 4 terabytes if my math is correct).
Now as far as templates, you can mostly accomplish this through Workgroup manager. Create groups and set whatever preferences you wish. It is a little trickier if you are also bound to Active Directory, but still possible.

  • Can not attach library for use OC4J

    Hi,
I am new to Oracle designer and have go to the point where I am trying to run a form I generated in Oracle Designer but the error I keep having is FRM-40039 cannot attach library - I get this for four libraries that are attached to the form; OFGCALL. OFGTEL, OFGNAVL, OFGMES. I have been playing about and attaching/removing them from the form, and saying NO to the dialog box that comes up saying 'attached library name xxxx contains a non-portable directory specification. Remove path?' seems to mean that the form will then start to have an error on one of the other libraries - so you would think that by attaching them all in this way that the form would run - but it doesnt.
Can someone please help? I have checked the forms path in the registry and it does point to the folder where these pll and plx files are located.
    Many thanks

    Hello,
I am not sure to understand your question around OC4J and Forms/Designer.
I doubt that the issue is related to OC4J since OC4J is a pure J2EE/Web Services container that does not have direct links with OracleAS Forms Server.
I am inviting you to post this question in Oracle Designer or Forms forums

That is a pretty specific question and I suspect there is a specific derb forum as well.
As a guess you probably failed to follow the docs on pre-reqs.

  • EJB Refs ( coded name and JNDI name )

    Hi
I am just starting to develop EJBs . I can't get to work the EJB refs as expected . In a session bean I have a lookup for an Entity bean . Both beans are in separate JAR files , but in the same ear .
The lookup from session bean to entity bean only works when
the coded name in EJB ref is defined exactly the same as JNDI name for enity bean , also the name in lookup method must be the same in session bean .
To my surprise , the JNDI name for the target EJB , defined in EJB ref for session bean , does not mater at all . Even if I change it to a non existant name , the bean lookup works .
Theoritacally I understand that EJB ref is there to provide a mapping between the name of bean mentioned in code to the actual JNDI name of another bean , at the time of deployment .
The above is happening in J2EE 1.4 envoirment .
Please let me know , what am I doing here that is wrong .
( All examples and tutorials , usually give coded name same as JNDI name ) .
    Thanks
    Tarun

    Hi Tarun,
The ejb-ref-name lives in a different namespace than the global JNDI names. Any names of ejb-refs, ejb-local-refs, resource-refs, etc. are scoped within a particular component's private namespace. All environment references are accessed via the java:comp/env namespace at runtime. So, if your ejb-ref-name(a.k.a "coded name") is ejb/foo in the deployment descriptor, you would access it from the code as follows :
    initialContext.lookup("java:comp/env/ejb/foo");
This way, neither the standard deployment descriptor nor the code has any dependency on the global JNDI name. That's a good thing since the decision about which target EJB should be linked to is often not made until deployment time rather than development time. Furthermore, it means if you want to change the linking you can always do it without recompiling your code.
As for the global JNDI names, the first thing to note is that they are completely vendor-specific. That's why they don't appear in the standard deployment descriptor. In the J2EE SDK, each EJB that exposes a Remote view is assigned a global JNDI name in sun-ejb-jar.xml. This JNDI name is assigned from the global namespace of the application server. There's nothing stopping it from also being "ejb/foo", but it refers to a different thing than the "ejb/foo" above.
Now we have an ejb-ref called ejb/foo and an ejb whose JNDI name is ejb/foo, but we haven't linked the two. When it comes to linking, you have two choices:
    1. If the target ejb is in the same .ear as the client component, you can use the ejb-link mechanism. This allows you to specify the target ejb by referring to its ejb-name. Since ejb-name is only guaranteed to be unique within an ejb-jar, the syntax allows for you to give the uri of the containing ejb-jar, followed by #, followed by ejb-name.
    2. Alternatively, you can specify the global JNDI name of the target ejb using sun-ejb-jar.xml Note that this will work whether the target ejb is in the same .ear or not. However, it's the only option if the target ejb is in a different .ear. In this case, you would create an ejb-ref entry for the client component within the sun-ejb-jar.xml. e.g. :
    <ejb>
    <ejb-name>MyClientBean</ejb-name>
    <ejb-ref>
    <ejb-ref-name>ejb/foo</ejb-ref-name>
    <jndi-name>ejb/foo</jndi-name>
    </ejb-ref>
    </ejb>
Again, it's just a coincidence that both names happen to be ejb/foo. They refer to different things.
When you do a global lookup from your code, initialContext.lookup('ejb/foo"), it will work in some environments because you're simply bypassing the level of indirection provided by your component environment and going straight to the global namespace. This is non-portable and not a good idea, since you've now tightly coupled the name of the target ejb to your client component. That means if it changes you need to recompile your code. Hope this helps.

  • Cannot run Enterprise Javabean Project in Netbean 6.9.1

I just installed Netbeans 6.9.1 and created a Enterprise Java Bean project. I started the Glassfish server 3. The server started successfully. But now when i try to run the project it gives an error message saying that "HTTP 400 Bad Request. The web page cannot be found". The url of the application shows something like this,'http://localhost:8080/EnterpriseLibrary-war/' . It does not show up the index.jsp page. Can this be the reason?? I tries to fix this by setting up the welcome page in web.xml under Pages section. Can anyone help me solve the issue? What can be the possible reason for this error?
Any help in this regards is greatly appreciated.

  • CreateSubContext Issue

    Hi All,
I am facing an issue with createSubContext API of JNDI. INITIAL_CONTEXT_FACTORY which we use is:
    com.sun.jndi.ldap.LdapCtxFactory.
    Ldap Tree Structure is :
[For simplicity i have taken only a subset of entries and not shown the entries above entry a like the domain component entries etc.,]
    a
    b
    c
    d
where a and b entries are already present in ldap.
When connected via browser to the ldap server and we are able to see only two nodes a and b.
We have a tool which tries to create the above given tree structure in ldap. Since a and b are already present we get a NameAlreadyBoundException which we are catching and ducking it off and moving on to create the next nodes c and then d in our case.
But the tool throws NameAlreadyBoundException when it calls createSubContext for entry c also.
And finally we get an exception when it tries to create entry D using createSubContext. Exception is
    NameNotFoundException.
[Log which we print on catching NameAlreadyBoundException and also other Exceptions]
DN Name Already Present in LDAP : cn=a
DN Name Already Present in LDAP : cn=b,cn=a
DN Name Already Present in LDAP : cn=c,cn=b,cn=a
Exception in thread "main" java.lang.RuntimeException: com.ebay.trinity.tools.ldap.springldapconvertor.convertor.LDAPJNDIToolException: javax.naming.NameNotFoundException: [LDAP: error code 32 - No Such Object]; remaining name cn=d,cn=c,cn=b,cn=a'
Have someone facing this issue eariler?
Please share your thoughts/suggestions on this.
    Thanks in advance.
    Regards,
    V.Mayakumar

Anything within the java: namespace of a J2EE component is read-only as per the J2EE spec Naming chapter. java: is a special namespace set up by the container on behalf of the application. It is not intended as a general-purpose mutable runtime namespace. The OC4J implementation is non-portable. It shouldn't be allowing modifications to anything under java:

  • Appserver 9 bookstore example

I have verified the database tables are there by using the IJ tool.
I have made the DerbyPool connection pool
In jdbs resources it shows the jdbc/BookDB enabled true description derby data source
I go into the bookstore1 dir and buiild with no errorrs. I copy the bookstore1.war file into the autodeploy directory.
I go to console and when I try and launch (using launch button) I get a dir listing
if I redeploy with verifcation on I get the following:
Deploying application in domain failed; Some verifier tests failed for the given application. Aborting deployment. Please verify your application using the verifier separately for more details Some verifier tests failed for the given application. Aborting deployment. Please verify your application using the verifier separately for more details
    any help appreciated

I am replying to myself here:
after looking at the verifier errors log it appears I am getting an error about missing exception classes, I have examined the bookstore1.war and the "missing" classes are in the bookstore.jar in the lib directory.
    The web.xml in bookstore1\web\web-inf
    has this entry
    <error-page>
    <exception-type>exception.BookNotFoundException</exception-type>
    <location>/errorpage.html</location>
    </error-page>
here is the error from verifier log:
