if i unjar a jar file, how do i let java
know where the classes are?

Considering your .jar file is in the desktop folder,
c:\Windows\desktop>jar -xf abc.jar
This will cause the class files in the jar file copied in the desktop.

my application need to use few jar files i downloaded from the internet
so i need to set the classpath so that i can import the packages in the jar file rite?
let say set classpath=.;c:\somedir\bin;
the ".;" after the "=" means that i search the current directory first then search the directory i have specified after that rite?
if so, can i put all the needed jar files in the current directory so that my application can use them??
Another question is if all the jar files in located in the same directory how can i set the class path to refer to them without sepecifying each of the jar file name??can i just put the directory path and will it locate them automatically when my application start??

No, you need to include each and every jar file in your classpath.
Or put them all in your <jdk_installation_dir>\jre\lib\ext directory, so that they will get included in your classpath automatically.

Signing a jar file question

Hello folks
Have a tough one here. We have a Legacy System that uses some 3rd party software called Reflections For Web (RWeb) from Attachmate in order to allow the Legacy System to interface with a mainframe system. One of the files needed by this RWeb software is a jar file called KeyToolsPro_jce1-2-1_signed.jar which itself was created by another company. The problem we are having is that due to the security changes in Java 7u51 this file is blocked due to not having the appropriate manifest entries and due to being signed by an unknown certificate CA. This problem is compounded by the fact that the company that created the file is no longer in business and as such cannot make the changes needed to the manifest file. Also the problem with the signature it seems is due to it being a cryptographic file it needs to be signed by a JCA code signing CA which is not recognized by the AF. This page talks about signing it with either a Sun or IBM JCA code signing CA:

My question would be is this still the only way to do this? Or is it possible that another type of CA could be considered "trusted" for the purposes of signing this type of jar file? Since it talks about a Sun certificate it does seem like the documentation might be a bit outdated and that perhaps any trusted code signing CA could be used to sign the file.

You can add a manifest to a jar file like this:
jar ufm MyJar.jar manifest.txt
You'll then need to resign the JAR. You'll need a code-signing certificate for this. You can obtain a real one from a provider, or generate your own CA and use it to sign a code-signing certificate yourself.
You can add a CA to the trusted list like this:
C:\Program Files (x86)\Java\jre7\lib\security>keytool -importcert -alias MyCA -file c:\cacert.cer -keystore cacerts -storepass changeit -noprompt
where c:\cacert.cer is the certificate for the CA.
However, it may be easier to add your internal server to the exceptions list using the Java control panel.

I assume you mean "cannot work".
Did you create the jar file with the manifest file specifying the class (with a main() method) to use?

Is this so?No. It is the JVM that determines when to pop the confirmation dialog.

Three questions about signed jar file and applet

I use three signed jar file. Each of them signed by different certificate. First of JARs contain applet class. When I start applet from html page I see message “This applet was signed by…… but Java cannot verify it… Do you trust…?”. All times I press “Yes I trust” and after this questions applet stop to work end exit. If I use only one certificate for signing of three JARs then applet continue to work after question. 1) What should I do to fix this bug? 2) Is it any method to check from applet that user press Trust button? Is it any method to emulate work of SecurityManager to check that Certificate object is trusted (I want do call some method check(Certificate) and if certificate is not trusted I want to see message with question: “Do you want to trust this certificate” and so on)?

First i have a question, can i make a .jar file that can run on a computer without JRE installed. And if i can, how do i make it. I have tried to make it on my computer, that has JRE but i keep getting the error when i run it: Exception in thread "main" java.lang.NoClassDefFoundError: Sample\FileSearchAnd im using the command:

That simply means your not pointing the runtime to the classes. Set your CLASSPATH environment variable correctly and it will run (given you have a JRE which it appears you do).
And im using the command:
jar cvfm jarname.jar directory\manifest.txt directory\FileSearch.class directory\FileNode.classIt says it creates the .jar but is unable to run it.

Question about using third party jar files in Java Web Start Environment

If you directly include classes12.jar in IRMASSvrMgntGUI.jar, the classloader won't be able to find the classes inside classes12.jar. You should sign classes12.jar separately and include that in jnlp along with your application specific jar. When you're launching your app using "java -jar somefile.jar" then the classpath settings in manifest file are used, but that's not the case when you start using JWS since in this case the classpath is based only on the " <jar href=..." entries in jnlp.

Quick Question **PLEASE HELP** .jar file?

Hey everyone, im pretty new to the java scene but I have a really quick question that hopefully someone can help me with.
I'm really interested in making a .jar file out of my code. And basically I just want to make one. but i understand there are certain things like main class's, etc. that need to be made in order to make a .jar file.
So basically Say I opened up a new project in blueJ. I made 1 new class called "main." Inside of it I had nothing for conductors and no variables declaired untill the bottom part where i write my code.
say i write...
System.out.println("hello");
and that is it.
What steps from there do i do to make a jar file and have it be able to be executed and SEE the "hello" printed somewhere NOT in blueJ??
(I understand there is something about a "static" method? Im not really sure but if somoene could enlighten me on how to make a .jar file that would be great.)

A few questions about executable Jar files

I have to make an a tutorial system and was going to make it using applets embedded in webpages. This approach causes certain limitations so decided to make it using JPanels that open up as windows on the users computer.
I intend on compressing all the files (java, images, sound etc) within a Jar file and would like a few questions answering.
1. How would I make an executable Jar file that when clicked on will load the program on the users computer. Is there some software to do it for me or do I have to do it from the command prompt?
2. Is using a Jar file the best approach or is there a better way to get my java program to run on other peoples pc's
3. If I create an executable Jar file on windows xp, will it run on a Linux machine?

Basic jar file usage question

I have developed a java project in eclipse. To develop this, I have used many external jars that I added in Java Build Path.
I exported this project as jar file.
Now I want to use class files in this project in the jsp page.
The problem is where should I put my jar file of this project and also the external jar files that I used. I made a WEB-INF folder in my project folder but still it is creating errors.
Please suggest.

I put both my project jar file, and the external jar file on which it is dependent in WEB-INF/lib directory. It can find my project jar file but not the external jars(axis.jar) and gives the errors as:
java.lang.NoSuchMethodError: org.apache.axis.description.ParameterDesc.setItemQName(Ljavax/xml/namespace/QName;)V
Could you please tell what is the problem. Under which path it looks for the external jars?

Question about classpath and jar file

I have a jar file (actually jhall.jar, the java help jar file). How do I uses its classes if I don't want to add it to the classpath. Currently, I have the jar file in the same directory as all my other classes.

When using the jar command, do I have to specify any imported classes that I have downloaded from the net to use in my main class?

Here's an example that works for me. I made a temporary directory c:\tempjava inside of which is the RabbitHole class that you posted. There is also c:\tempjava\TerminalIO directory that contains the KeyboardReader and ScreenWriter classes.

Question about Executable JAR Files

Is it possible to make an executable JAR file that has all of the *.class files, all of the *.jar archives used, etc. packaged into one file that doesn't need these external files within the same directory? I've been having a ton of trouble finding the answer to this. (If it's blatantly obvious, please forgive me.)

There are, however, many good reasons to not do this. Some were already mentioned, another is in the case of update external libraries, you might not want to rebuild your whole project, replacing a jar may be easier.

You cannot do this by simple repacking/rearchiving of JAR, because it contains special descriptor with fingerprint. In general, JAR is unmodifiable, however, you can create a new one with modified sources.
You can try to import the JAR in some Java project in Eclipse, for example. Then make your changes and use the Eclipse's Export JAR wizard in order to repack the modified source Java files in a new JAR.

I general, yes, the operation is allowed. However, you cannot do this with JAR deployed on some J2EE server or Portal, for example. Because there are references to it.

Yes, sure. Use Import from Archive wizard in Eclipse. Or add the JAR in the class path of some Java project and Eclipse will show you the content of it.
