Java 6 Update 10 breaks Netlet

Java 6 Update 10 with the "defaulted to on" Next. Gen Plug-In throws this:

Exception: java.lang.NullPointerException
Idea's other than disabling the plugin.

From Sun Support. It solved my issue.
Suggested Fix:
Install latest JRE version 1.6.0_11 and ensure it works fine.
C:\Program Files\Java\jre6\bin>java -version
java version "1.6.0_11"
Java(TM) SE Runtime Environment (build 1.6.0_11-b03)
Java HotSpot(TM) Client VM (build 11.0-b16, mixed mode, sharing)
Take the backup of firefox plugins (C:\Program Files\Mozilla Firefox\plugins) directory that
contains npnul32.dll & npdeploytk.dll
Example: backup contents copied to C:\Program Files\Mozilla Firefox\plugins\orig
Goto JRE6 bin (say C:\Program Files\Java\jre6\bin) directory and copy the following np*.dll files
to firefox plugins (C:\Program Files\Mozilla Firefox\plugins) directory:
npdeploytk.dll
npjpi160_11.dll
npoji610.dll
npt.dll
Then copy the following np*.dll files from JRE6 new_plugin
(say C:\Program Files\Java\jre6\bin\new_plugin) directory
to firefox plugins (C:\Program Files\Mozilla Firefox\plugins) directory:
npdeploytk.dll
npjp2.dll
Finally ensure you've copied the following files (np*.dll files) from both JRE6 bin and
bin\new_plugin directory to firefox plugins directory :
npdeploytk.dll
npjp2.dll
npjpi160_11.dll
npnul32.dll
npoji610.dll
npt.dll
The above specified steps are derived from the following link:
Source: http://support.mozilla.com/en-US/kb/Using+the+Java+plugin+with+Firefox
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
# Workaround if Java is not detected: On most systems, the Java plugin files are detected via plugin scanning if the required registry entry exists. However, in some cases, Java is not detected unless the Java np*.dll plugin files are copied from the Java application folder bin folder.
Note: The following steps should be executed only as a last resort, as each time Java is updated the outdated plugin files must be removed and the newer versions copied over. For more information, see these notes.
1. Copy the np*.dll files for your version of the JRE from the following location:
C:\Program Files\Java\j2re<version>\bin\
2. Paste them into your Firefox plugins folder, which is typically in the following location:
C:\Program Files\Mozilla Firefox\plugins
3. Important: If copying the Java plugin files to the browser plugins folder does not activate Java after restarting Firefox, remove them from the folder.
  • Java 6 Update 13 breaks crypto?
    I have an app which has been running successfully in production for over 5 years. I do some minor encryption of user information in a disk file, using the Cryptix library. I initialize the library like this:
    java.security.Security.addProvider(new cryptix.provider.Cryptix());
    Cipher alg = Cipher.getInstance("Blowfish", "Cryptix");
    This has always worked fine until this week. One of my users upgraded to Java 6 Update 13, at which point the second statement started throwing an exception:
    netscape.security.ForbiddenTargetException: There is no security target with name "GetSecurityProviders"
    at xjava.security.IJCE_SecuritySupport.findTarget(IJCE_SecuritySupport.java:237)
    I'm not a crypto expert, so I'm a little baffled at what could have changed and how to track it down. Any ideas? Thanks in advance.
    I've never done any work with Cryptix, but it looks like Cryptix hasn't updated their code since 2005 (http://www.cryptix.org/), so it's not likely they themselves have tested their library with newer versions of the JDK.
    Have you thought about just replacing your provider with BouncyCastle (which supports PGP-style formats) as a "plug-in" replacement for Cryptix? BC definitely works with JDK6U13.
  • Java 6 Update 3 Breaks Webstart
    Hi all,
    we have recently discovered an issue after upgrading to latest Apple Java update and looks to me to be a Bug. Same thing works in the latest Java Sun Webstart so why Apple broke this is unclear to me. Also according to the JSP specs this should work.
    Here is the problem:
    We have an application which starts through webstart which contains some jars. The app needs to do some OS specific stuff and since our customer base uses MAC, Windows and Linux we need to support all 3.
    The JNLP contains the security line for all permissions which works:
    <security>
    <all-permissions/>
    </security>
    and the user did accept the certificate.
    However when the code does a System.getProperty("os.name") that returns null. In previous versions of Java the value was there and was Ok. Now even more strange is the fact that System.getProperties() only returns 4 values.
    According to my understanding of JNLP, Security and the specs from Sun - System.getProperty("os.name") should return a value as long as the jars are signed and the user accepts the certificate.
    Does anyone know what I can do to make this work on the latest Apple Java or do I have to create a hack ... which I would not want to do unless that is my only choice.
    Thanks
    Radu
    AFAIK, Java 6 Update 1 is the latest for SL: http://www.apple.com/downloads/macosx/apple/application_updates/javaformacosx106 update1.html
    Best you repost to the developer forums under OS X Technologies.
  • Java 7 update 21 breaks all existing JWS desktop shortcuts on windows
    I just updated from 1.7u17 to 1.7u21 and all my Java Web Start shortcuts broke because I no longer have C:\Windows\SysWOW64\javaws.exe.
    I can "reinstall" the web start apps or delete their shortcuts and re-create them and they work because they now point to C:\Windows\System32\javaws.exe.
    Earlier in the Java 7 series I had all my shortcuts break because the opposite had happened. System32\javaws.exe disappeared and new shortcuts pointed at SysWOW64\javaws.exe.
    What can I do to make these shortcuts more stable, short of not using web start?
    System:
    Windows 8 Pro x64
    Java 1.7 update 21
    We have the same problem every time an Java update is deployed.
    We receive errors like "java.io.FileNotFoundException: C:\Users\<username>\AppData\LocalLow\Sun\Java\Deployment\cache\6.0\61\56122c3d-737a9565 (Das System kann die angegebene Datei nicht finden)", (~"System is unable to locate the file"), as well as CouldNotLoadArgumentException[ Angegebene Datei/URL konnte nicht geladen werden: C:\Users\<username>\AppData\LocalLow\Sun\Java\Deployment\cache\6.0\61\56122c3d-737a9565].
    But if one looks into jcp (Java Control Panel), the application is listed as "installed application". And if you delete both links, in Programs and on the desktop (*because Java Web Start does not create not one of them if it finds just one of them*!) you can start over again and everything is allright, without the need to reinstall the application itselft.
    Does one have an idea for a workaround?
  • Java 7 Update 25 breaks Java Web Start on Mac OS X
    Hello,
    After the update on Mac OS X 10.8.4 it is no longer possible to launch Web Start applications. The Java 7 splash screen appears for a brief moment, but the application isn't started. There is a Java Web Start process that remains though. I also tried this on the command-line with the same result.
    Best regards,
    Werner.
    As the website said, Java Web Start is only supported on Mac OS X 10.1.
    Cheers,
    A.A.
    I would like to know if Java Web Start works on Mac OS
    8 and 9. If the answer is yes, would you please let
    me know what is the package to download to achieve
    that? I would also like people's comment on how
    easy/hard is Java Web Start works, if it is buggy, and
    how well it is working on Mac OS. I am evaluating
    whether we are going to incorporate this technology
    into our application. I would highly appreciate your
    input.
    Thanks for the reply..
    I used your tool and it seems my jnlp file is ok ..(nothing in red)
    I have actually identified the problem and it seems after update to java 6 update 14.. I am not able to access any resources
    Here the function that reads a .csv file
    private int readStateMapData(String theAbName) {
    .............................//lines deleted
    lineBuf = "stateCodes.csv";
    dPanel.showStatus("Reading state code information...", null);
    lineBuf = "map-data/" + lineBuf;
    try {
    URL url = new URL(getCodeBase(), lineBuf);
    BufferedReader in = new BufferedReader(new InputStreamReader(url.openStream()));
    stateID = null;
    while ((lineBuf = in.readLine()) != null) {
    StringTokenizer st = new StringTokenizer(lineBuf);
    String ID = st.nextToken();
    String name = st.nextToken();
    if (name.equals(theAbName)) { stateID = ID; break; }
    in.close();
    if (stateID == null) return STATE_NOT_FOUND;
    } catch (MalformedURLException me) { return BAD_STATECODE_FILE; }
    catch (IOException ie) { return BAD_STATECODE_FILE; }
    I already have a logic built into my program that displays and error message and it shows "cannot read state code file"
    These files are inside my jar. Again if I uninstall java 6 update 14 webstart works fine ..What should I do ??
    Here is my jnlp file :
  • FF blocks Java 7 update 45. Why? Explanation regards 7U11.
    Have installed Java 7 update 45.
    Have both 32- and 64-bit versions installed from Oracle website.
    Works in Chrome.
    Firefox 24.0 displays error message stating that the Java plugin has known vulnerabilities.
    On the support page there is a link to this explanation from January 2013 which regards Java 7 update 11.
    https://blog.mozilla.org/security/2013/01/11/protecting-users-against-java-vulnerability/
    Does anyone have a permanent fix and preferably an explanation for this?
    I know how to allow Java to run once as well as always on a specific site
    https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/kb/how-to-enable-java-if-its-been-blocked
    What I'm wondering is why Firefox still blocks Java per default when Java has been updated many times since the explanation was written.
    Thanks a bunch!
    Although I like this idea, you (Firefox dev) still need to provide a way to enable the plugin regardless.
    I have already encountered 2 cases which break the user experience without giving an option to activate the plugin:
    1. you're using Raritan for out-of-band management of computers
    2. you're using HP iLO for out-of-band management of computers
    in both cases Firefox does not present me with an option to enable Java. HP iLO uses javascript to call the applet. Raritan calls the applet from some other frame on login, and who knows what the applets are doing in the background.
    I can't tell HP or any other vendor to switch their code to something else. Firefox should give me an option to enable Java or I'll have to switch to another browser. At that point, what's the use for Firefox? I can simply stay on the other browser forever.
    The way this is currently implemented is breaking things. Fix it.
    Hi,
    This is an easy solution:
    From the OS command line, do WRKLNK, go to /usr/sap/SLMS/global/j2eeclient,  at the top where it shows the directory, do a copy on this. Then at the command line type MD, do F4, paste the directory name in the first line, then after j2eeclient add /META-INF'
    IMportant*** Make sure the full directory name is in single quotes.*
    *On the next 2 lines change INDIR to RWX.  Then press enter and re-run your job.  If you have any problems let me know.
    Since I installed Java 7 update 51 accessing the EMC VNX Unisphere Console cause the following error: java.util.HashMap cannot be cast to java.awt.RenderingHints.
    I rolled back to Apple Java 1.6 -005 now I am getting the following error: plug-in failure.
    I think this is cused by the fact that the EMC console application has been written for java 7 and not java 6. Has anybody faced and solved the "java.util.HashMap cannot be cast to java.awt.RenderingHints." error ?
    Hi Yaakov,
    The error is thrown from the  eclipselink.jar:2.5.1 which is a JPA provider .
    Is the above jar bundled in the Oracle Product you are working upon or was this downloaded from external site ?
    If the jar is bundled with the Oracle Product, go ahead a log a SR with Oracle Support with Toplink product group to drill down on the issue, as the issue is happening internally or thrown by the Eclipselink implementation and we've no control....
    Hope it helps!!
    Thanks,
  • Webstart no longer works after update from Java 7 Update 67 to Java 7 Update 71/72
    Hi,
    We have an application that is launched via Webstart.  Last year, we had to make a bunch of changes to the application in order to work with Java 7 Update 45.  It has been working fine up to and including Java 7 Update 67.  However, it is no failing with Java 7 Update 71 and 72.  Upon launch it is giving the error below. I have searched online and found other articles related to the AccessControlException but they are about 7 years old.  I also tried adding this to the java.policy file with no luck.  Any ideas or help would be appreciated to determine what I can do to get this to work for update 71.
This time I updated to Java 7 update 51, installed it, verified that it is successfully installed. But every time I try to click on the Java Acrostic, I get an error message where the Acrostic normally is located reading "Error. Click for details."   • Java 7 update 17 not  working on Mac os x 10.7.5
    Hi,
    I am trying to get my Java working on my mac os x 10.7.5, but everything is saying that the plug-in is inactive, or java applets just continuously load. My java is enabled and up to date, as is my safari. I have read about all this stuff saying apple disabled java then renabled it without telling anyone. What exactly is going on and how can i get java to work?!?! I have tried fiddling with its settings, uninstalling, reinstalling, downloading chrome, etc etc and nothing seems to have any affect. Is there a way of reverting to some old software in either safari, java, or something to make this work as it used to until it decided to not one magical day?
    Thanks in advance,
    Jen
    Hi Jen,
    I am having the same issue, from what i am reading and understanding is apple and there in genius ideas decided to block Java because its apparently a security risk - a joke i know!
    see i had my course materail for tafe all working then i decided to do the update that kept popping up since then it doesnt work, i installed java 7 update 17 on my old mac book pro and it works perfectly the only thing that is different between those 2 is safari my imac is running 6.0.3 and my macbook is still on the one before that..
    i am still currently working on a way to enable this again unless apple relise that this was a completly stupid idea and come to there sens before i come up with away then ill keep you updated when i get it working
    so for those who are reading this and havent updated yet my advise if you need java for online games or course materail or anything really DONT UPDATE
    thanks
  • Upgrade to 18.0 has disabled Java even though plugin checker says Java 7 Update 10 is up to date, yet webpages using java display "missing plug in" error
    Attempting to install the "missing plug-in" using the Firefox prompts results in Java 7 Update 10 being installed, re-installing it is successful and does not resolve the issue, Firefox 18 refuses to allow/display java content even with the proper updated version of Java installed.
    This problem ONLY occurred immediately following this mornings update to Firefox 18.0.
    Context:
    Yesterday: Java working fine.
    This morning: Update to Firefox 18.0
    Java will not work, not at all even with Java 7 Update 10 installed, not even the "verify java version" applet at http://www.java.com/en/download/installed.jsp will display.
    When attempting to view/display any java content the "missing plug-in" error bar at the top of the page displays and attempting to install the required plug-in via that method does not resolve the issue even though the correct version of Java is installed and the plug-in checker verified it was "up-to-date".
