Java app. consuming 100% of PC resouces
I have an application that works great with the exception that it comsumes all resouces on a PC running Windows 2000 or XP. When the application is running multitasking by the OS is nearly disabled. Looking at resouces consumed, the Java application is consuming nearly 100% of the CPU.
Does it sound like a major problem with the application, i.e. memory leak? Are there any common mistakes in programming Java that causes this issue? How can I correct the problem?
Memory leak is not likely.
Sloppy programming could require too many resources - indeed occupying the PC unnecessarily:
event handling etcetera. There you could look at changes to SwingUtilities.invokeLater.
I would advise first to switch to the newest stable java, 1.4.
First you might give the application a larger memory to start with:
java -Xms100m -Xmx200m ....
This would start the app with 100 MB and allow it to go to 200 MB.
Start the app from command line, so you might see System.out and System.err.

We have a new instance of CQ5 (version 5.4) running on a Windows 2003 SP2 Server. For some reason, which we can't determine, after a period of time a Java process on the system begins to consume 100% of the CPU and the system becomes totally unresponsive. Has anyone seen this before? Is there a fix for this?
RKDoes the it eventually recover on it's own? It's possible that the JVM is doing full garbage collection. How big is your max heap size? I suggest to add some garbage collection debugging in the JVM_OPTS to see if it is Java's garbage collection or not. Might as well check the heap too, to see if it's running our of memory.

I have two JVM running on my Application tier and both of them consuming 50% each of CPY resources. I searched and found some inactive sessions under them. Even after release those inactive sessions nothing has come down. Still 100% is there. Is there anything else I can check

Can you confirm your version of JDK and ATG patchlevel ? I've seen this as a problem which was partially addressed by moving to ATG RUP 5.

Weblogic cluster consumes 100% CPU and bringing server to its knees.
I have BEA Weblogic 10.3.1 clustering as part of FMW 11g clustering. This is two node cluster on "Oracle VM" running OEL 4.0 with 4GB Memory and 4GB swap. Install seems to go with little difficulties like 100%CPU for short period but during the configuration always the Java thread consumes 100%.
Now I am at a point where shared drive is created (Chapter 5.20 of EDG) for HA FileAdapter and Persistence store. Hitting same 100% CPU problem. Looks like thread locking situation.

Also noticed the SWAP space is never being used though it has 4GB swap space. It brings the VM to its knees. Thanks in advance for any response.

- No more than 100 active users per JVM
- No more than 1 active JVM per CPU (Ideally 1 JVM per 2 CPUs)
- Make sure you have enough memory so your JVMs will be running without swapping
For the max.heap memory, Oracle recommends:
-ms128m -mx256m if you have 512 MB memory
-ms256m -mx512m if you have more than 512 MB memory
In addition, verify that you do the following in jserv.properties:
- Make sure you have 'wrapper.bin.parameters=-DLONG_RUNNING_JVM=true'
- Make sure you comment out 'wrapper.bin.parameters=-DCACHEMODE=LOCAL' -
How do I run multiple java apps in one JVM to reduce memory use?
Hi all,
I saw an article either on the web or in a magazine not too long ago about how to "detect" if the app is already running, and if so, it hands off the new instance to the already running JVM, which then creates a thread to run the Java app in. As it turns out, my app will be used in an ASP environment, through Citrix. We may have as many as 50 to 100 users running the same app, each with their own unique user ID, but all using the same one server to run it on. Each instance eats up 25MB of memory right now. So the question is if anybody knows of a URL or an app like this that can handle the process of running the same (or even different Java) apps in one JVM as separate threads, instead of requring several instances of the JVM to run? I know this article presented a fully working example, and I believe I know enough to do it but I wanted ot use the article as a reference to make sure it is done right. I know that each app basically would use the same one "launcher" program that would on first launch "listen" to a port, as well as send a message through the port to see if an existing launcher was running. If it does, it hands off the Java app to be run to the existing luancher application and shuts down the 2nd launching app. By using this method, the JVM eats up its normal memory, but each Java app only consumes its necessary memory as well and doesn't use up more JVM instance memory.

Can't execute web app from NetBeans 3.6 with Sun Java App Server 8
Hi there,
I'm tyring to execute a java web application called myfirstjsp.
In directory ...\myfirstsjp I've got:
- index.jsp
- WEB-INF dir
- META-INF dir.
I can run myfirstjsp from NetBeans if I choose the Netbeans default server, Tomcat 5.0.19 (this web server is configured to port 8084).
However, when I try to execute myfirstjsp from NetBeans with Sun Java System Application Server 8(configured to port 8080), it gives me an annoying message:
The Sun Java System Application Server 8 could not start.
More information about the cause is in the Server log file.
Possible reasons include:
- Port conflicts. (use netstat -a to detect possible port numbers already used by the operating system.)
- Incorrect server configuration (domain.xml to be corrected manually)
- Corrupted Deployed Applications preventing the server to start.(This can be seen in the server.log file. In this case, domain.xml needs to be modified).
I checked port conflicts but none found.
The other two options don't give me a place to start (I don't know what to do with domain.xml)
I'm working with:
- Windows XP Pro
- J2SE 1.4.2_04 (installed in C:\Program Files\j2sdk1.4.2_04)
- Sun Java Application Server 8 (installed in C:\Program Files\Sun\AppServer)
- Netbeans 3.6 + Sun Java System Application Server Plugin (installed in C:\Program Files\NetBeans3.6).

By looking at the Sun App Server log file, I discovered that the log outputs of
- Start Default Server (a link in the folder created by the installation of Sun App Server)
- and trying to execute myfirstjsp from NetBeans through Sun App Server
are very similar.

Is this EJB compilation error normal ? if not what does it mean ? Sun Java App Server installation isn't OK ?
I tried to look into the Sun App Server Troubleshooting, searched forums... but couldn't squeeze any valuable info from any of them.

MiguelI seem to have the same problem, I cant run sun application server 8.1. The server is in c:\sun\appserver\, I am using netbeans 4.1. I recieve the same comment above:
The Sun Java System Application Server 8 could not start.
More information about the cause is in the Server log file.
Possible reasons include:
- Port conflicts. (use netstat -a to detect possible port numbers already used by the operating system.)
- Incorrect server configuration (domain.xml to be corrected manually)
- Corrupted Deployed Applications preventing the server to start.(This can be seen in the server.log file. In this case, domain.xml needs to be modified).
I cant see any port conflict, the server is set to port 4848. I dont know about any configurations.

I don't want any program to be allowed anything more than a standard applet except when it is specified in a policy.
The code (posted below) listens to my policy file when run as an applet but ignores the java.security and java.policy when started with java.
The command "java test" gives me no exceptions at all, the default (I guess) is to allowe java apps to do what they want.
So my question is can I set the security or policy so it won't allowe anything unless specified in a policy file?

After starting up the listener the server consuming 100% CPU
Hi,
when i startup the database tier (EBS 12.1.3 and DB 11.2.0.2) its stared well and the CPU usage is normal.But when i start the listener the server (RHEL 5.8) start consuming 100% CPU.

Dock consumes 100% of CPU and fan runs. What to do?
I have a 2010 MBP with SSD and VMWare (not Parallels). Every so often, the dock cranks up to consume 100% of the CPU, and the fan runs. The problem goes away when I reboot. I've tried quiting various applications, but it doesn't seem to make a difference (i.e. I cannot identify a rogue app that's causing this). There are a lot of discussion threads on this problem with OS 10.6.8 and Parallels, but I'm running Lion 10.7.1 and VMWare (which I've shut down).
Any others have this issue? Ideas for solution?Small update: Despite my intelligence, good looks and vast experience I use Google sometimes. To my surprise this file turns out to be a Windows one. Here is someone who is much happier, and since it is some way in my line of thinking I'll quote it, but you might take my previous advice as well:

I did not knew where to put this, but, here it goes:
We have purchased program based on Java (j2re1.4.2_03) and have experienced problems with running other applications like MS office or IE. The problem is that when the Java app is runing, when opening MS word it sometimes freezes. To unfreez MS word wehave to flash open and hide Java app. We and the developers are at loss. What to do?
PS: if you know the solution or there is another topic about this question pelease write the link. I could not find smoething similar in Google.It is not problem in Word. It is not system (Win XP)
problem. We had system and word reinstalled and
nothing changed (on several computers). It shows the
same symptoms. The problem repeats when opening
Internet explorer where pages have java scripts
implemented. On word it happens ocasionally.
Is there at least some direction to point out to our
developers. Where could be the root of the problem?I am concerned that I should have to tell you what to have the developers to look at. They are the developers after all this is their problem to solve. I don't mean to be trite here but they will know more about what their program does than anyone here will. And if it is a bug in Java then they need to tell you exactly what it is.
Anyway their are two possible problem sources here I think.
1) The program interacts with other programs in some way that is detrimental. I have no idea what this program does because you haven't said. But perhaps for example it's using some Office components in some way and making them upset. (This could also possibly explain the IE problem)
2) The real issue is that the Java program has a bug whereby it consumes all the CPU resources on the system till such time that it is interacted with or otherwise decides to stop behaving that way. This is a bug in the code for the program. Again though other than this not much more can be said because one would have to see the code for the program. I think it's most likely the cause of your problem.
Last, yes there are bugs in Java itself that can cause problems but not generally in the matter you describe. Again though even if this should turn out to be one of those times it is up to the developers to identify this.
You need to have the developers solve this for you. This is good as blind direction is going to get I think. -
N73 No certificates & unable to install java apps
If I select /tools/settings/security/certif. management I get nothing, just a time bar that says "processing" and nothing else.
Does anyone know why?
I also have problems trying to install a java application. I think is related to the above issue, but not sure yet. At about 90% of the progress it fails with message "unable to install".
How can I get more debug information?

You could try reseting your device;
Reformat - Type *#7370# and the phone's lock code (Nokia default lock code is 12345). Warning! This reset wipes your C drive/phone memory! Also, on Symbian^3 devices mass memory gets wiped too.

Why does my iWork update hang with zsh consuming 100% cpu?
The App Store updates for iWork Apps (Numbers, Keynote, Pages) have hung for me multiple times. After some digging, the hangs appear related to setting zsh as my default shell (Open Directory UserShell /bin/zsh). When an update is hung in App Store, Activity Monitor shows zsh is consuming ~100% cpu. Inspecting the process, it's hung on zsh -c defaults delete com.apple.helpd com.apple.helpd.sdmMapsCreated or something similar each time. If I kill the hung process enough times, eventually the update completes.
Most recently encountered updating to Numbers 3.5.2 on OS X 10.10.1 with $SHELL=/bin/zsh 5.0.5 (x86_64-apple-darwin14.0).
Possibly related to keynote not installing.
Definitely related to http://apple.stackexchange.com/questions/146919/zsh-using-100-of-cpu-during-iwor k-install. The workaround described here is the only way I've gotten through it.You probably deleted something crucial to the stability of the operating system. I suggest backing up your important files, and doing a complete reinstall.

Clouds process consuming 100% of cpu
Whenever MBP is not able to connect to internet, the cloudd process consumes 100% cpu.
This is draining the battery in a very short time.
Internet connectivity, either lack there of or because of corp. firewall rules send this process into 100% consumption.
Only work around is to disable all items in iCloud control panel, which is painful for access and re-sync.
RobertDoes the it eventually recover on it's own? It's possible that the JVM is doing full garbage collection. How big is your max heap size? I suggest to add some garbage collection debugging in the JVM_OPTS to see if it is Java's garbage collection or not. Might as well check the heap too, to see if it's running our of memory.
Example;
-verbose:gc -XX:+PrintGCTimeStamps -XX:+PrintGCDetails -XX:+PrintTenuringDistribution -Xloggc:/tmp/gc.log -XX:+HeapDumpOnOutOfMemoryError -XX:HeapDumpPath=/tmp
