Java Applet painting outside it's borders?!

Hello all, I have a java applet that is painting outside of it's bordors in Firefox and IE, only when scrolling does this occur. I have been searching around and found a bug which was submitted in 2006 for the same issue but cannot see any resolution or further issues. I imagine there must be a workaround as this would be quite a major issue if it was always the case. It only happens when scrolling and the applet is being repainted. Any ideas?
Thanks
Dori

  • Java Applet painting broken in IE11 and Windows 8.1

    When running a Java applet in Internet Explorer 11 window on Windows 8.1, JRE fails to repaint the viewport correctly when the web browser window is resized or scrolled. (assuming the Java Applet has display dimensions larger than the window, necessitating the need to resize or scroll host IE window). Webpage is displaying the java applet using any of OBJECT or EMBED tags.
    This JRE behavior prevents the user from interacting successfully with the Java Applet (typically input data fields or click buttons in applet) should user need to resize or scroll the window.
    This bug only occurs on IE11 on Windows 8.1 with JRE 7 and JRE 8 (include 8u31)
    This bug does not occur on  IE11 on Windows 7,  IE10 on Windows 7 / 8 ,  Firefox on Windows  7 / 8 / 8.1 ,  Google Chrome on Windows  7 / 8 / 8.1
    This bug has also been posted to the IE Feedback website since 2013 as we do not know if this is to be resolved by Oracle or Microsoft.
    With the upcoming removal of Java Plugin support in Google Chrome, and, with this JRE bug (or incompatibility?) in IE11 Windows 8.1, this leaves only Firefox as the only usable web browser for Java Applets on Windows 8.1.  Our customer base on Windows 8.1 is only using IE11 or Chrome.

    I am seeing a minor issue with the timesheet grid after users are upgraded from IE8 to IE11.
    We are using Project Server 2010 with SP1 and Oct 2013 CU.
    When some users (using IE11) switches between filters or views in the Timesheet page, the grid shrinks making to content un readable.  The only way to get it back is to refresh the page. After a refresh, the grid returns to normal size, but the pane
    divider is too far to the left and always must be dragged to the right in order to see the task names in the left grid.

  • Java Applets (facebook) too "big" for window borders...?

    My java applet on facebook extends beyond the set borders. How can I make this smaller?
    Here's a picture of what it looks like:
    http://img2.pict.com/57/60/e6/0e4f69d546c2eacf750d516f09/K5pnb/yeddes.jpg
    I'm using Firefox and I have the latest versions of both Firefox and Java.

    Interestingly enough, the preferredLayoutSize method of the layout manager attached to the JScrollPane never gets called when the scroll pane is resized horizontally, only vertically. I found this out by subclassing BoxLayout so that it printed a string when certain methods were called. I did that after noticing that I can resize your help window vertically with no problem, but horizontally is a different story -- when I increase the horizontal size, the JPanel grows to fit, but when I decrease the horizontal size, the JPanel stays the same size. Returning smaller Dimensions in preferredLayoutSize of my overrided BoxLayout class didn't help.
    I investigated further and subclassed JPanel to print a message when setSize or setBounds was called. When I vertically resized the help window, JPanel.setBounds was called to resize the JPanel. I was expecting that. However, when I horizontally resized the help window, the JPanel size wasn't updated... at least not in the way I expected it to be. When I increased the horizontal size past the maximum horizontal size so far, the JPanel's horizontal size was increased to match. However, when I decreased the horizontal size, the JPanels horizontal size was not decreased to match.
    So, here's what I found:
    1) JScrollPane vertical size increased: Scrolled component vertical size increases to match.
    2) JScrollPane vertical size decreased: Scrolled component vertical size decreases to match.
    3) JScrollPane horizontal size increased: Scrolled component horizontal size increases to match.
    4) JScrollPane horizontal size decreased: Scrolled component horizontal does not change.
    So the scrolled component horizontal size gets increased, but never decreased. This is odd... perhaps it is a JScrollPane bug? I'll see if I can't figure out a way around it. Overriding the scroll pane's setBounds and setSize methods didn't work, perhaps I'll target the JViewport next.
    Sorry I couldn't help right away, though. Lemme know if you figure it out.

  • Java Applet Window Warning - Appearing through

    Hello
    The warning that is displayed on applet windows now when using java is causing a problem.
    When you bring a fresh web page or word document over the top of the applet window, the java applet warning is still visible as if it has been brought to the front layer. but the rest of the applet is behind the new active window.
    Really weird.
    Ben.

    Our team is also using a signed applet and are having trouble with popup items not being accessible outside of the JFrame.
    In appletviewer the popup (JXDatePicker) is fully accessible. If running in Internet Explorer on Windows 2000 the portion of the popup outside of the JFrame paints correctly but cannot receive click events correctly.
    It would be preferrable that if the popup cannot receive events outside of the applet frame that the popup would be smart enough to pop itself fully in the applet frame.
    Any suggestions?
    Thank you.

  • Java Applet Window showing on signed applet popups

    I have an applet deployed that is signed, but I'm experiencing a very annoying problem with JPopup windows that cross outside the border of the JFrame created by the Applet.
    Those pop-up windows still show the warning at the bottom "Java Applet Window". That part is pretty annoying and I don't understand why it's doing that since they are coming from a signed, trusted applet.
    Just to be clear, any of the JPopups or JDialogs or anything else we display inside the frame doesn't have this warning since we signed the applet.

  • Basic Java Applet

    I am writing my first applet. I have read some tutorials but I cant get it to run in my browser (it runs in the applet viewer though). Please be detailed in your answer because this is my first applet.
    This is the process I am following and the code:
    Using eclipse I created a project. Then right click on it to create a class (as in java applicatons). But i replaced the code in the class file for:
    package pkgs;
    import java.awt.*;
    import java.applet.*;
    public class FirstApplet extends Applet{
         public void paint(Graphics g){
              g.drawString("Simple applet", 20, 20);
    Then I run it as an applet and it worked in the applet viewer.
    Then I created a jsp page calling the applet:
    <%@ page language="java" contentType="text/html; charset=ISO-8859-1"
    pageEncoding="ISO-8859-1"%>
    <!DOCTYPE html PUBLIC "-//W3C//DTD HTML 4.01 Transitional//EN" "http://www.w3.org/TR/html4/loose.dtd">
    <html>
    <head>
    <meta http-equiv="Content-Type" content="text/html; charset=ISO-8859-1">
    <title>V2</title>
    </head>
    <body>
    <applet code="FirstApplet" width = "260"height = "200"></applet>
    </body>
    </html>
    Then I run it again and "Export" it to .WAR in my tomcat root directory. I am calling the page but it says:
    load: class FirstApplet not found.
    java.lang.ClassNotFoundException: FirstApplet
    The file FirstApplet.class is in the WEB-INF folder, under classes and the package name folder.
    I even tried to copy paste the .class file to the same directory as the .jsp file but no luck.
    What am I missing.
    Thanks in advance for your help.

    JSPs are server side technology and applets are client-side. There's no connection between them; you can use one without the other. The only interaction is that if you find it difficult to create the JSPs properly, then they won't have the proper HTML needed to tell the browser to download and start the applet.
    I'd suggest not even bothering with JSP for now. Just create a plain HTML page that embeds the applet. Later on, if you need to, and after you have the HTML working, you can replace the HTML with a JSP page. Use the HTML as a guide to make sure you got the JSP right.
    To start off, create a directory -- say, /applet -- that's off the docroot of your web server. This would be OUTSIDE and next to the WEB-INF directory (assuming you're using the same document hierarchy for both web and app servers, or just using an app server). Put the HTML file and the applet .class or .jar file in there.
    Use curl (or just your browser if you don't have curl, but I'd strongly urge you to get curl and learn how to use it if you don't have it) to confirm that both the web page and the applet classes/jars are readable by clients. Use curl with the -i and -I headers to see that the server returns a 200 status.
    Then you can work on editing the HTML to make it invoke the applet correctly.
    Later on, you might want to move the applets and HTML. The ideal setup depends on issues such as, how do you deploy code and content; do you manage your own server; etc.

  • Newbie need help wtih Java Applet noinit error

    Hi, i am having problem with a making this java applet application run, i am new to java but i am sure that my coding is right, because this what i typed from my java class book. Don't know why when i try to run it is say at the bottom of the windows explorer, "applet class name "noinit"". The code is listed below maybe someone could help me figure this out. I used NetBean to compile it, also I have the latest version of java but could not find a applet that come with the newest version of java so I'm using the j2sdk1.4.2_11 applet, and have added it to my system environment path. Maybe that could be the problem if so where do i get the newest version of the applet, because without doing what i did i could run applets in the first place. My other sample applet sample (demo's) that come with Java runs fine without any problem. Only when i run mine i get the message, "applet class name noinit".

    Hi,
    Your applet code in the html should be

    if (wt > max)This forum doesn't quite handle <> properly. The greater and less than symbols. So above you will see > this is the html character code for a greater than symbol so please read it as such.
    And then if wt is greater than max then it will say "Your overweight".
    But I can't figure out how to include it in the above program. Becuase it won't run in paint, atleast it won't the way I have done it previously. So can you think of any other ways?
    Help much appreciated,
    Simon

    Thanks very much that works well.

  • Removing the 'Warning Java Applet' Status Bar

    Hi,
    I've written an applet that does not require access outside the sandbox so doesn't need signing. However, it pops up an instance of Window, and because it's not signed the window has a status bar across the bottom which says 'Warning Java Applet' or something similar depending on the browser. Is there any way to remove this status bar without signing the applet or changing the security settings of the browser. I guess it must be added to the window so maybe it's just a component that can be removed, but how?
    Thanks in advance

    Today the Security Warning sign appeared at the bottom of my computer screen - how do I get rid of it. I do have Java whose icon used to be in the lower right hand section of my screen - along with all the other icon programs that I have.
    Now the icon is no longer down on the bottom right of the screen, but in the middle with a Security Warning -(the wording) next to the jave icon.
    This is really annoying me - how can I get rid of it, and - why did it appear here?
    Anxiously awaiting your reply.
    Donna

  • How to run a Java applet on a website.

    Hi,
    I am trying to run the code below [DrawLines.java|http://www.dgp.toronto.edu/~mjmcguff/learn/java/01-drawingLines/]
    import java.applet.*;
    import java.awt.*;
    public class DrawingLines extends Applet {
       int width, height;
       public void init() {
          width = getSize().width;
          height = getSize().height;
          setBackground( Color.black );
       public void paint( Graphics g ) {
          g.setColor( Color.green );
          for ( int i = 0; i < 10; ++i ) {
             g.drawLine( width, height, i * width / 10, 0 );
    on my website . I compiled it using JDK1.6.0_21 on Windows 7 and generated DrawingLines.class (My site is hosted on a linux server, is this an issue since it was compiled on Windows?)
    I created a html file:
    <applet width=300 height=300 code="/shanegibney/classes/DrawingLines.class"> </applet>Then I created a new folder called 'classes' in my public directory.
    I get the following error:

    Exception: java.lang.NoClassDefFoundError: /shanegibney/classes/DrawingLines (wrong name: DrawingLines)I'm sure adding a java applet is very common. Does anyone have any ideas why this isn't working? It can be seen here .
    Any help would be greatly appreciated,
    Thanks,
    Shane

    I believe it's interpreting some of the code attribute as a path. Try this:
    <applet width=300 height=300 codebase="/shanegibney/classes/" code="DrawingLines"> </applet>

  • Java Applets do not run when UAC is enabled on Windows 7

    HI,
    I'm deploying Java 6.0_26-b03+ on Windows 7 and experiencing following problem:
    Java applets do not run as standard domain users in Internet Explorer 9 on Windows 7 when UAC is enabled (i.E. http://www.java.com/de/download/installed.jsp). When logged on as Administrator or start IE9 as Administrator java applets do run.
    If I diable UAC an log on as normal user then applets do run. Applets then still run if UAC is re-enabled again. It seems that UAC needs to be disabled for the Java Plug-In to register something in user context (assumption). If this registration happended Java applets do run also for standard Windows 7 users if UAC is enabled.
    Since we're planning a corporate Windows 7 rollout (>800PCs) we cannot do this manually on every computer. Ther must be any solution for this problem.
    Does anybody have the same problem and has already found a solution?
    This is the content of the error log file generated when a standard domain user tries to run http://www.java.com/de/download/installed.jsp

    Since we're planning a corporate Windows 7 rollout (>800PCs) we cannot do this manually on every computer. Ther must be any solution for this problem.If you're doing a corporate rollout of that size then surely you're just making an image of the desired configuration and just duplicating it onto the 800 PCs? In which case you would just configure IE appropriately as part of the image.
    Or alternatively you are manually configuring each of the 800 PCs, in which case this would be just one more thing in the checklist.

  • Help plotting points in a java Applet using Bresens Algorithm

    Hi,
    I am trying to compile my code and it doesn't like POINT. I am guesing I am using the wrong thing.
    Point.point(Math.round(x), Math.round(y)); and I tried just Point.
    How do I plot points so that it forms a line. What internal function do I use?
    Here is my code.
    import java.applet.*;
    import java.awt.*;
    import java.lang.Math;
    import java.awt.Point;
    import java.awt.Graphics;
    public class DDASimple extends Applet
         int   dx, dy, steps, k, absolutex, absolutey;
         float xinc, yinc, x, y;
       public void init()
    public void paint(Graphics g)
    DDASMPL(50,50,100,150);
    public void DDASMPL(int x1, int y1, int x2, int y2)
      repaint();
      dx = (x2-x1);
      dy = (y2-y1);
    //absolutex =
      if( Math.abs(dx) > Math.abs(dy))
         steps = Math.abs(dx);
      else
         steps = Math.abs(dy);
         xinc = dx / steps;
         yinc = dy / steps;
         x = x1;
         y = y1;
    Point.point(x1, y1);
          for (k = 1; k < steps; k++)
              x = x+ xinc;
              y = y + yinc;
    Point.point(Math.round(x), Math.round(y));
    //g.drawOval(Math.round(x), Math.round(y));
         }//end else
    }//end function dda
    }//end class ddda applet

    I took out the repaint(). and below is the updated version
    I am not getting anything now, no line

  • Java Applet Won't Initialize

    This is a modified version of a tutorial I've been working with. Code for Main.java:
    import javax.swing.*;
    public class Main {
    * @param args the command line arguments
    public static void main(String[] args) {
    SwingUtilities.invokeLater(new Runnable() {
    public void run() {
    JFrame f = new JFrame("Swing Paint Demo");
    f.setDefaultCloseOperation(JFrame.EXIT_ON_CLOSE);
    f.setSize(300,300);
    f.setVisible(true);
    Problem is that when I try to load the applet into an html file:
    <html>
    <APPLET code="Main.class"></APPLET>
    </html>
    It doesn't load.
    The file compiles and executes as a stand alone .jar, but when I try to run it as an applet it won't work.
    I know I'm probably missing an easy step. I have already checked my IE7 settings and java is enabled. I have no problem with any other java applets, just the ones I make. haha. Thank you ahead of time.

    I did some research, and got a new tutorial because the old one was inappropriate like you pointed out previously. This one I copy pasted into my editor, it compiled fine. I run it through my browser and it doesn't work still. Same issue, coincidentally, what do you make of it?import javax.swing.JApplet;
    import javax.swing.JTextField;
    import javax.swing.SwingUtilities;
