Java applet shows boxes instead of text

I'm helping a friend with a new PC. He likes to work the crosswords at washingtonpost.com, which are embedded java applets. For what ever reason, all the clues just show up as boxes where the text should be. This screen shot should help:
http://members.cox.net/rtadams89/screen.png
As you can see, all the "clues", and the crossword title just show boxes where letters should be. Other text (that which you type into the crossword) as well as text in java apps on other sites shows up fine. I've tried reinstalling the java run time environment, as well as clearing the browser files and checking internet explorer settings. Any other suggestions?

I'm still not having any luck with this. I've reinstalled Java, and also check the internet explorer settings. Nothing seems to be wrong as other sites work just fine. Could this be a missing font issue?

  • Why do empty boxes show up instead of text on many web pages?

Several months ago we started having trouble on our Mac OS X desktop computer with Firefox. On many web pages, including the Firefox Support home page, I see empty boxes instead of text. The boxes do not have any letters in them. If I copy and paste the boxes into MS Word it translates them into text, but not on the web page.

You can do a check for corrupted fonts and other font issues:

  • JSPX Design View shows 'boxes' instead of WYSIWYG

For a particular project I've just created to examine/try some custom JSF tags, when I edit mypage.jspx file, I get a display of nested boxes instead of a WYSIWYG view of the mypage.jspx page.
This does not happen in a similar project that I've already completed & can display a .jspx from that project in a window next to the one displaying the boxes for mypage.jspx.
Any ideas how to get it to display correctly?
The code of the page that doesn't display correctly is below:

Doing this showed me that I was missing a library - JSTL.
I added the JSTL 1.2 library, then closed and re-opened the .jspx and am seeing the page correctly.

  • Preview prints empty boxes instead of text in .pdf

Recently I noticed that when I try to print a .pdf file  from Preview, even when all the text shows on the monitor correctly, when it prints, it prints empty  boxes (outline of a box the size of the letters) where the texts should be.
When I open the same .pdf file using Acrobat and then print it, it prints out fine.
The printer has postscript capability and the fonts used is pretty standard (from the looks of it, Times or something like it).
I powercycled both the printer and the print server and no difference.
    Why is this happening?
    MacOS 10.6.8
    MBP early 2011
printer:  HP LJ 5MP vis JetDirect print server (networked on our Airport Extreme base station via ethernet)
    any insight is appreciated.

The first thing to do is make sure there's not a problem with the disk permissions.  Below are the instructions for doing that.  Let me know what happens.
    To repair disk permissions:
    Open finder.
Search for and open Disk Utility.
Select the drive with the OS installed.
    Click on Repair Disk Permissions.

No Text at all .It only shows small squares instead.

    Hi Pedroblue,
I would request you to first uninstall the HP Suport Assistant completely from the control panel.
Now download and install the latest version of HPSA from the following link

  • Upgrading from 10.5 to 10.6 - login screen now shows glyphs instead of text

Hi guys, had a bit of an unusual occurance when upgrading from 10.5 to 10.6.
The login screen now shows as this:
    (excuse auto image rotation!)
I've tried running Onyx to clear the font cache but it hasn't fixed the problem. Any suggestions?
    Thanks,
    Ian

AFAIK, rebuilds the font caches correctly. I never recommend something like Onyx, since I don't know what it's doing behind the scenes.

  • Getting boxes instead of text in documents.  IS THERE A WAY TO ACTUALLY SPEAK WITH SOMEONE AT ADOBE?

This is ridiculous.  Navigating the website, looking for that elusive telephone number for help.  I don't know what wrong with Adobe's 10 flash player program and why it isn't working with my Windows 8 program.  The Windows 8 test says I'm good to go, but obviously, that's not the case.  Are there any people on the other side of this "help" portal?

There are, but there's going to be a fee for the support call.  If you want to continue down that path, here's the phone number.

  • Why do Java web applets show up in the Dock sometimes?

I use web-based gradebook (Infinite Campus). At times since upgrading to Lion, when I load this Java applet through Safari and begin to interact with it, it pops up as a Dock icon. This never used to happen under Snow Leopard. I can't tell if it's something different with the applet or with Lion/Safari 5.1, but I'm assuming the latter. Can anyone shed any light on this? Why would a Java applet show up in the Dock as its own icon while runnign within Safari rather than just running "faceless" within the Safari window? Is there any way to change this behavior on my end? I've poked around in the /Applications/Utilities/Java Preferences app, but I haven't found anything relevant. I've tried re-installing the Lion Java runtime, 10.7.2 Combo Updater, and Safari 5.11, to no effect.

  • Creating a PDF from a SAAS app creates boxes instead of Japanese characters

I'm using an online app (Unleashed Software) to "print" invoices, and the printed invoices show boxes instead of Japanese characters. The really weird thing about this problem, is that it occurs only on certain devices. I've tested on Macs, Windows, Android, and iOS, and on some devices I get the problem, and on some devices I don't. It's not just a Windows problem, or a iOS problem. Additionally, I use different browsers, from Chrome, to IE, to Firefox, to Safari. Changing the browser doesn't seem to help when it's on a device that won't output Japanese characters in a PDF properly.
I'm wondering how PDFs are generated when using online software. Since I can't reproduce the problem on certain devices, it seems to me that the software is using some local settings to render the PDF incorrectly.
Any ideas of how I could go about troubleshooting this problem?

    Hi,
Could you please answer the following questions
1.What version of Crystal Reports are you using?
Go to Help-> About to find out.
2.What is the font you are using on the report?
Try to change the font style to MS Gothic or Arial Unicode MS, most preferably MS Gothic.
And export the report to PDF format.
    This may help you
    Thanks,
    Praveen G
