Java Bean standard name prefixes

Does "addSize" follow Java Bean standard?

There is a bunch of information about it in the Java spotlight section on the Forms Upgrade Center at:

    Ok, this seems to be a long and convoluted path to do absolutely nothing.
    You submit the form.
    You run a servlet that gets the parameters correctly (good), creates a SimpleBean (good) and then sets this into request attribute space under the names "user" and "pass" - (why?)
    You then forward to the jsp: submit.jsp.
    Submit.jsp creates a new SimpleBean, and attempts to populate it with <jsp:setProperty>. You then call the issueData method on it.
    Your complaint: Rows are being created in the database which have empty string values instead of the parameters you have passed.
    So, why are the values blank? Where do you think these values should be coming from?
    Looking at SimpleBean we find one mistake - you have mis-named your get/set methods.
    To properly follow java beans standards, you should use camel-case for your methods.
    Rather than getuserName() the method should be getUserName(). getpassword() should be getPassword() etc etc.
    The method getUserName() defines a property "userName" for the bean.
    Once that is fixed, lets go to submit.jsp. The <jsp:setProperty> statement will try and set all properties of the bean from the request parameters.
    There are no request parameters "userName" or "password" so those values don't get set in the bean, therefore it uses their default value of empty string - "".
    There ARE request parameters called "user" and "pass" but because they aren't properties of the bean, they get ignored.
    As a result, the values are empty string, and that is exactly what gets inserted into the database.
    Ways to fix this
    1 - rename your parameters on your form to be "userName" and "password" to match the bean. That way the <jsp:setProperty> tag will populate them properly.
    or
    2 - Call issueData() method from your servlet after you have created the SimpleBean. Better in my opinion as you then don't have any scriptlet code on a JSP page.
    Cheers,

  • Java Beans properties not recognized

    I'm trying to access a javabean property from jsp, but however this is what I get when I try to do so:
    org.apache.jasper.JasperException: Cannot find any information on property 'PatientIcNo' in a bean of type 'Action.Profile'
    my bean is Profile.java which is class in the package Action. I think i've compiled this successfully. But why am I still getting this error.
    In my bean I've declared the getPatientIcNo() and setPatientIcNo() methods.
    Thanks in advance.

    But how did you declare patientIcNo?
    private String patientIcNo;
    or
    private String PatientIcNo;
    Believe it or not, it makes a difference.
    Pay attention to the Java Bean Standard.
    The JavaBean spec states that properties are case sensitive and start with a lower case character.
    So in the JavaBean you should declare:
    private String patientIcNo;
    and the getter is:
    public String getPatientIcNo() {
    return patientIcNo;
    In the JSP the syntax are:
    <jsp:useBean id="patient" scope="request" class="Action.Profile" />
    <jsp:setProperty name="patient" property="patientIcNo" value="RickyBobby" />
    <jsp:getProperty name="patient" property="patientIcNo" />
    <%= patient.getPatientIcNo() %>
    <% patient.setPatientIcNo("Sidecar"); %>
    If by chance you name the property PatientIcNo instead of patientIcNo,
    <%= patient.getPatientIcNo() %>
    and
    <% patient.setPatientIcNo("Sidecar"); %>
    work, but the others won't.
    setPatientIcNo maps to the property patientIcNo.
    But there isn't such a property in your bean!!
    You named it PatientIcNo.

  • "Java-Bean: True" missing after being packed in jar file

    Hi All
    X86, Windows XP Professional, J2SDK 1.4.2
    I complied a section of code ", which is from << Thinking In Java>>(3rd).
    Created a manifest file "BangBean.tmp"
    <<
    Name: bangbean/BangBean.class
    Java-Bean: True
    >>
    And then packed class files into "BangBean.jar" with command
    "jar cfm BangBean.jar Bang BangBean.tmp bangbean".
    It's puzzling that "Java-Bean: Ture" was missing in the "BangBean.jar/META-INF/MENIFEST.MF" .
    <<
    Manifest-Version: 1.0
    Created-By: 1.4.2 (Sun Microsystems Inc.)
    Name: bangbean/BangBean.class
    >>
    What's more, after altering the"BangBean.tmp" into this
    <<
    Java-Bean: True
    Name: bangbean/BangBean.class
    >>
    and had a another try.
    I got a jar file with such MENIFEST.MF.
    <<
    Manifest-Version: 1.0
    Created-By: 1.4.2 (Sun Microsystems Inc.)
    Java-Bean: True
    Name: bangbean/BangBean.class
    >>
    This jar file worked well in BDK's beanbox.
    I've test it with JSDK 1.5.0, the same thing happened.
    And I didn't encounter such problem in other bean programs.
    I've searched " 'Java-Bean: True' missing " with google, but didn't get proper answers.
    Is there anybody who can give a prompt about why this happend?
    Thanks a lot for your help!

    Since you didn't use code-formatting tags ([ code ] and [ /code ] without the spaces) it's kinda hard to look at it. But I'm sure it DID execute much more than just the return statement - maybe you're not closing a file or db connection, or maybe you're seeing a cached page, so it actually isn't executing ANYTHING on the server (is your browser set to never check for newer pages so it (almost) always returns from cache, for example?)

  • Help required in building up the Java Bean for an XML data

    Hi ,
    I want to build a Java bean which will actually represent an xml data . The class will be named as User and it will typically represent the data in the follwing xml:
    <user>
    <cwsId>barbete</cwsId>
    <firstName>William</firstName>
    <lastName>Barber</lastName>
    <status>true</status>
    <role>
    <roleCode>1000000177</roleCode>
    <roleName>Customer Administrator</roleName>
    </role>
    <language>en</language>
    <country>US</country>
    <preferences>
    <equipmentGroup>2717</equipmentGroup>
    <dateFormat>MON-dd-yyyy</dateFormat>
    <timeFormat>HH:MI AM</timeFormat>
    <timeZone>-12:00</timeZone>
    <daylightSavings>Y</daylightSavings>
    <location>NC</location>
    <recordsPerPage>10</recordsPerPage>
    <historyPeriod>3</historyPeriod>
    <distanceUnit>MILE</distanceUnit>
    <fuelUnit>G</fuelUnit>
    <unitIdDisplay>E</unitIdDisplay>
    <smuUpdate>W</smuUpdate>
    <countries>
    <country>
    <countryCode>GB</countryCode>
    <countryName>UNITED KINGDOM</countryName>
    </country>
    <country>
    <countryCode>US</countryCode>
    <countryName>UNITED STATES</countryName>
    </country></countries>
    </preferences>
    </user>
    Now for single child nodes like cwsId of the main user node i have kept properties like
    private String cwsId;
    But i am not sure as to how to represent the nodes which contain subnodes like "preferences"node. Any ideas?What is the standard practice?

    One thing you could do is create an object model first, which will contain all the data for your user.
    then all you need in the bean is a Hashtable with the name of the user as a key, and the user-object (which is actually the complete object model) as a value.
    with the XML stated by you, you would get an object model something like this:
    Class User
        String cwsid;
        String firstName;
        ArrayList<Role> roles = new ArrayList<Role>(); //I'm assuming a user can have more then one role.
        ArrayList<Country> countries = new ArrayList<Country>();
    class Role {
        String code;
        String name;
    class Country {
        String code;
        String name;
    }And so on for all the varioous elemets of your XML.

  • Question about main difference between Java bean and Java class in JSP

    Hi All,
    I am new to Java Bean and wonder what is the main difference to use a Bean or an Object in the jsp. I have search on the forum and find some post also asking the question but still answer my doubt. Indeed, what is the real advantage of using bean in jsp.
    Let me give an example to illustrate my question:
    <code>
    <%@ page errorPage="errorpage.jsp" %>
    <%@ page import="ShoppingCart" %>
    <!-- Instantiate the Counter bean with an id of "counter" -->
    <jsp:useBean id="cart" scope="session" class="ShoppingCart" />
    <html>
    <head><title>Shopping Cart</title></head>
    <body bgcolor="#FFFFFF">
    Your cart's ID is: <%=cart.getId()%>.
    </body>
    <html>
    </code>
    In the above code, I can also create a object of ShoppingCart by new operator then get the id at the following way.
    <code>
    <%
    ShoppingCart cart = new ShoppingCart();
    out.println(cart.getId());
    %>
    </code>
    Now my question is what is the difference between the two method? As in my mind, a normal class can also have it setter and getter methods for its properties. But someone may say that, there is a scope="session", which can be declared in an normal object. It may be a point but it can be easily solved but putting the object in session by "session.setAttribute("cart", cart)".
    I have been searching on this issue on the internet for a long time and most of them just say someting like "persistance of state", "bean follow some conventions of naming", "bean must implement ser" and so on. All of above can be solved by other means, for example, a normal class can also follow the convention. I am really get confused with it, and really want to know what is the main point(s) of using the java bean.
    Any help will be highly apprecaited. Thanks!!!
    Best Regards,
    Alex

    Hi All,
    I am new to Java Bean and wonder what is the main
    difference to use a Bean or an Object in the jsp. The first thing to realize is that JavaBeans are just Plain Old Java Objects (POJOs) that follow a specific set of semantics (get/set methods, etc...). So what is the difference between a Bean and an Object? Nothing.
    <jsp:useBean id="cart" scope="session" class="ShoppingCart" />
    In the above code, I can also create a object of
    ShoppingCart by new operator then get the id at the
    following way.
    ShoppingCart cart = new ShoppingCart();
    out.println(cart.getId());
    ...Sure you could. And if the Cart was in a package (it has to be) you also need to put an import statement in. Oh, and to make sure the object is accessable in the same scope, you have to put it into the PageContext scope. And to totally equal, you first check to see if that object already exists in scope. So to get the equivalant of this:
    <jsp:useBean id="cart" class="my.pack.ShoppingCart"/>Then your scriptlet looks like this:
    <%@ page import="my.pack.ShoppingCart %>
    <%
      ShoppingCart cart = pageContext.getAttribute("cart");
      if (cart == null) {
        cart = new ShoppingCart();
        pageContext.setAttribute("cart", cart);
    %>So it is a lot more work.
    As in my mind, a normal class can also
    have it setter and getter methods for its properties.True ... See below.
    But someone may say that, there is a scope="session",
    which can be declared in an normal object.As long as the object is serializeable, yes.
    It may be
    a point but it can be easily solved but putting the
    object in session by "session.setAttribute("cart",
    cart)".Possible, but if the object isn't serializable it can be unsafe. As the point I mentioned above, the useBean tag allows you to check if the bean exists already, and use that, or make a new one if it does not yet exist in one line. A lot easier than the code you need to use otherwise.
    I have been searching on this issue on the internet
    for a long time and most of them just say someting
    like "persistance of state", "bean follow some
    conventions of naming", "bean must implement ser" and
    so on. Right, that would go along the lines of the definition of what a JavaBean is.
    All of above can be solved by other means, for
    example, a normal class can also follow the
    convention. And if it does - then it is a JavaBean! A JavaBean is any Object whose class definition would include all of the following:
    1) A public, no-argument constructor
    2) Implements Serializeable
    3) Properties are revealed through public mutator methods (void return type, start with 'set' have a single Object parameter list) and public accessor methods (Object return type, void parameter list, begin with 'get').
    4) Contain any necessary event handling methods. Depending on the purpose of the bean, you may include event handlers for when the properties change.
    I am really get confused with it, and
    really want to know what is the main point(s) of
    using the java bean.JavaBeans are normal objects that follow these conventions. Because they do, then you can access them through simplified means. For example, One way of having an object in session that contains data I want to print our might be:
    <%@ page import="my.pack.ShoppingCart %>
    <%
      ShoppingCart cart = session.getAttribute("cart");
      if (cart == null) {
        cart = new ShoppingCart();
        session.setAttribute("cart", cart);
    %>Then later where I want to print a total:
    <% out.print(cart.getTotal() %>Or, if the cart is a JavaBean I could do this:
    <jsp:useBean id="cart" class="my.pack.ShoppingCart" scope="session"/>
    Then later on:
    <jsp:getProperty name="cart" property="total"/>
    Or perhaps I want to set some properties on the object that I get off of the URL's parameter group. I could do this:
    <%
      ShoppingCart cart = session.getAttribute("cart");
      if (cart == null) {
        cart = new ShoppingCart();
        cart.setCreditCard(request.getParameter("creditCard"));
        cart.setFirstName(request.getParameter("firstName"));
        cart.setLastName(request.getParameter("lastName"));
        cart.setBillingAddress1(request.getParameter("billingAddress1"));
        cart.setBillingAddress2(request.getParameter("billingAddress2"));
        cart.setZipCode(request.getParameter("zipCode"));
        cart.setRegion(request.getParameter("region"));
        cart.setCountry(request.getParameter("country"));
        pageContext.setAttribute("cart", cart);
        session.setAttribute("cart", cart);
      }Or you could use:
    <jsp:useBean id="cart" class="my.pack.ShoppingCart" scope="session">
      <jsp:setProperty name="cart" property="*"/>
    </jsp:useBean>The second seems easier to me.
    It also allows you to use your objects in more varied cases - for example, JSTL (the standard tag libraries) and EL (expression language) only work with JavaBeans (objects that follow the JavaBeans conventions) because they expect objects to have the no-arg constuctor, and properties accessed/changed via getXXX and setXXX methods.

  • Using java beans in jsp using tomcat

    hi i have made a form to enter user first name and last anme with html and then i have made a value javabean in which i want to store the information filled bu user. i want to display the information stored in java bean in jsp page i have made the full application and i have made class file of java bean as well as jsp file but when i try to run this web application in tomcat i am getting class not found exception.
    could anybody tell me that where i should store the bean class in tomcat and do i need to make any package in which i have to place my java bean file plz tell me complete procedure along with code if possible

    whew thats a lot of questions... All of this is pretty basic stuff. I would recommend you take a look at the web services tutorial: http://java.sun.com/j2ee/1.4/docs/tutorial/doc/
    lets see.
    Starting a package name with com is just a generic standard which is followed.
    It is most correct when creating commercial packages to create packages like com.companyName.project
    http://java.sun.com/docs/codeconv/html/CodeConventions.doc8.html
    You should not need a page import directive unless you are using classes in scriptlets: ie <% %> tags in your JSP. Your jsp:useBean tag will automatically import necessary classes - you don't need to import classes for beans specifically
    <jsp:useBean id="myClass" scope="session" class="com.myPackage" />
    Your directory structure should be something like this
    webApplicationRootDirectory
    - page1.html
    - page2.html
    - page3.jsp
    - page4.jsp
    - WEB-INF
         - web.xml
         - classes
           - com
             - myPackage
               - myClass.classerrrm. Thats about it I think.

  • Struts 2: Doesn't populate an array of java beans in action classes

    Hello,
    Currently i am working on Struts 2 based application, in which i need to populate an array of Java beans from the form.
    The problem, I am facing is:
    Struts 2 is not instantiating an array of beans
    I have gone through the Data transfer and Type Conversion of struts of 1.2, but every where I can see only following:
    1 An array of primitive data types
    2 List of primitive / Java bean
    3 Map of primitive / Java bean
    but i can't see the docs on An array of Java Beans.
    What I can't do in my application is:
    1 Can not convert an array of beans into java.util.List<beans>
    2 Can not instantiate the bean array (As the number of elements will be decided by the front end - form)
    Please have a look at my configuration file:

    I am having the same issue. It appears that the RequestProcessor.processValidate adds the errors (ActionMessages) to the request the does a forward. As such the errors are not available to the jsp page. Does any one know a way to get round this?

  • Where does java beans be to locate in jsp?

    I've problem to understand where Tomcat looks for Java Beans
    - testbean.jsp:
    <html>
    <title>Prova beans</title>
    <body>
    <jsp:useBean id="test" class="lta.FirstBean" />
    </html>- i've put FirstBean.class in:
    MyDomain->MyFolder->WEB-INF->classes->lta->FirstBean.class
    When i launch testbean.jsp, it returns the error below:
    org.apache.jasper.JasperException: /provabean.jsp(5,0) The value for the useBean class attribute lta.FirstBean is invalid.
         org.apache.jasper.compiler.DefaultErrorHandler.jspError(DefaultErrorHandler.java:39)
         org.apache.jasper.compiler.ErrorDispatcher.dispatch(ErrorDispatcher.java:407)
         org.apache.jasper.compiler.ErrorDispatcher.jspError(ErrorDispatcher.java:150)
    ......I have also try to put file class in:
    MyDomain->WEB-INF->classes->lta->FirstBean.class
    but i got the same error.
    Can someone helps me?
    Thks in advance

    I don't like it. I think you should deploy Web apps
    under Tomcat the way Tomcat expects to see them:
    http://jakarta.apache.org/tomcat/tomcat-5.0-doc/appdev/
    ndex.htmlI follow your suggest but i get another problem.
    I created an application in $CATALINA_HOME/webapps/myapps and i put all *.jsp files in it, then i configured workers2.properties to send only *.jsp and servlet request to Tomcat with:[uri:<mydomain>/*.jsp]
    info=My application folder for Host <mydomain>
    worker=ajp13:localhost:8009
    [uri:<mydomain>/servlet/*]
    info=Prefix mapping
    worker=ajp13:localhost:8009Everything works fine with *.jsp but not for servlets.
    In server.xml:
    <Host name="<mydomain>" appBase="jakarta-tomcat-5.0.27/webapps/<mydomain> " debug="0">
    <Context path="" docBase="">
    <Logger ....>
    </Host>Perhaps i must configure the Context parameters ...

  • What is the difference between java direct or java bean in JSP?

    What is the difference if I use java code directly in JSP or use java bean in JSP?
    Which class to use for receiving the passed parameter from html or java script? Any difference for java code and java bean in the way receiving the passed data?
    How can I pass string from jsp to html or java script?

    it's generally accepted as better design to separate presentation from logic. meaning, the java code in the jsp should be used to support displaying data, as oppsoed to implementing the application - like database access, etc.
    when the logic is separated from the presentation, it allows you to reuse logic components within several jsp pages.
    if you decide to change the presentation layer in the future (to support wap, for example) you don't need to rewrite your entire application, since the "guts" of the application is outside of the jsps.
    it is also a good idea to separate your business logic from your data layer. adding a "buffer zone" between these layers helps in the same manner as in separating presentation from logic. if you're using flat files for storage now, upgrading to a database wouldn't require rewriting all your business logic, just the methods which write out the data to a file, for example.
    once you feel comfortable with separating the various layers, check out the struts framework at http://jakarta.apache.org/
    to answer your second question, to get parameters passed in from HTML forms, use ServletRequet's getParameter() method.
    in tomcat:
    <% String lastName = request.getParameter( "lastname" ); %>
    to answer your third question: when displaying the HTML from withing a jsp, print out the string to a javascript variable or a hidden form element:
    <% String firstName = "mike"; %>
    <input type="hidden" name="firstname" value="<%= firstName %>">
    <script language="javascript1.2">
    var firstName = "<%= firstName %>";
    </script>
    this jsp results in the following html:
    <input type="hidden" name="firstname" value="mike">
    <script language="javascript1.2">
    var firstName = "mike";
    </script>

              You realy can do it like Xiang says, but the better way is to use packages. That's
              the way BEA is designed for. If you use packages you can but your bean classes
              in every subfolder beneath Classes. Here for example we have the subfolders test
              and beans:
              You have to declare the package on top of your Bean Source Code:
              package test.beans;
              In your JSP you don't need the import code of Xiang. You only have to refer the
              path of your bean class:
              <jsp:useBean id="testBean" scope="session" class="test.beans.TestBean" />
              There are some other AppServers that only can deploy Java Beans in packages. So
              if you use packages you are always on the right side.

  • WDVisibility type paramter in Java Bean(Web Dynpro DC in CE 7.1)

    Hi All,
    I need to set a WDVisibility type paramter in a java bean and i am able to do so.It imports com.sap.tc.webdynpro.progmodel.api.WDVisibility class .
    The problem is when i am creating a Java Bean model  it is not allowing me to select the Java bean class it gives an error message" Invalid Class : No class files found for JavaBean : com/sap/tc/webdynpro/progmodel/api/WDVisibility".
    The java Bean class exists in Web Dynpro DC>src folder.
    Any Pointers?
    Regards
    Avinash

    Hi Ondrej ,
    Refer the above links to convert the component of the first dc as a public part.
    Then declare the methods which are written in the component controller of the first DC in the interface controller with the same signature.( When method is called automatically component controller method is called)
    In second dc in component controller properties tab add the reference of the first dc.
    Then access the method in second dc as
    wdthis.wdget<UsedComponent name>Interface.methodname();
    Thanks & Regards,
    Ardhendu
