This is the error message I receive when running a test on my Java install, has anyone experienced this and if so what is the procedure to fix.
Runing Windows XP Professional Service Pack 2 (build 2600) With all of the updates Using Fire Fox Browser 1.0.6.
I get this error in safe mode and with all extensions disabled
Have checked for virus and am virus, spy ware, male ware free.

Java challenge !! Very hard !! Find mines

Hi !!! I'm new in here !! So, here is the challenge. My teacher passed to the class a challenge that you need to create a game that a robot finds mines in an unknow field. But rules must be follwed. Here's the rules:
1 - The java game must read a .txt file (example.txt) with the informations about the field and the robot must find all mines. But he don't need come back to the origin. He starts to looking in columm 1, line 1.
2 - The matrix (filed) shows 3 separate values:
0 - free position
1- barrier
* - mine
3 - The objetive is to find all mines with less cost (steps). Every time that the robot passes through a 0 position, he pays with one point of penalty, and every time that the robot finds a mine, he wins 10 points.
4 - Every .txt file which is read, at the end, needs generate a new .txt file with the number of steps that the robot did and the total of points. Wins who find all mines with less steps.

5 > size of matrix, alaways square (5x5, 3x3, 2x2)
3 > total of mines
0 0 1 0 0 \

Running Java.exe from VBScript

I have a program that starts via a java command. If I look at the properties for the shortcut, it has?

Start In: ?C:\Program Files\CBS\CBPay?
If I run the application via this shortcut, it runs fine. I need to run it via vbscript. I am using the below syntax?

Also, if I Start==>Run and paste that command and run it, it does the same thing and flashes the command prompt screen and nothing happens. It's like it just doesn't have a path to something. I have no "Java" experience and beginner VBScript...So any assistance would be greatly appreciated! Thanks!

I changed it to have "cmd /k", so that it would at least keep the cmd window open so I could read the error message...it is giving me the following...

I believe a major part of my problem is that I am majorly JAVA challenged and don't really know what that "com.cbsgame.cbPlus.CBPlus" portion of the java command relates to. I searched for jar file names CBPlus and found one in "c:\program files\CBS\CBPay\client\lib", but don't see how that relates/translates to the ".com.cbsgame..." in the JAVA command?

Need to know how you guys feel/think?

Hi guys,
As I have posted earlier, I want to pick up Java once again. However, due to my heavy schedule I can only pick it up slowly. But then problems come again. I find that after I've learnt something, I tend to forget as I'm not a real-life Java programmer, you can either called me a leisure Java programmer, or a Java hobbyist. But I do wish that one day I can both program in Java and other programming languages. I hope to create something that is build of Java and other language to talk to each other convieniently.
However, I felt that, without real-life hands-on experience, it's quite hard to put into practice for what you have just learnt! OMG! This is terrible, I feel that I might repeat this forget-pick up loop. Hmm, wondering does it justified with the time I put time?
Guys, can any of you suggest to me anyway I can always put into practice for whatever I have learnt (at least those from Java Tutorial on Sun website)?
Is there anything not too ambitious but could be real-life problem solving and solution that I don't wish to make money, but to keep my hands busy on Java and always remember what I have just learnt?
Any feedbacks and suggestions are highly appreciate.
P/S: I hope this is not a rubbish topic that doesnt worth anyone's reply -.-

I was in a similar situation - I work in IT, but only
program in Java for fun at the moment. You say you
want problem-solving suggestions. Can you think of
any computer-related problems you would like solved?
Everybody has little irritations when working with
computers. Maybe you've been looking for a calendar
application with all the functionality you want? A
timer that will remind you when your favourite tv
programs start? A system for organising your CDs?
Don't worry about it having been done before. There's
loads of resources available, like these forums. I've
learnt loads by poring through the APIs. Start with
something simple, and work your way up if you want.
Right now, I'm working on a swing app which takes a
lot of parameters in a form, and outputs an HTML
template - solves a time-consuming problem for me,
but probably not much use to anyone else!
If you haven't got any ideas straight off, try doing
the homework exercises posted on these forums
(probably best not to spoonfeed the answers though!),
or look at the Java > Student Projects section of

Glad to find someone in the similar situation like me! At least I can learn something from your experiences or so. So far the suggestions that I get is to read up a lot of books. Well, yes, I would love to read up to understand and know how to program in Java, but at the same time I need to know how to do real-life problem solving too. I can't make myself stop programming if I have a strong interest in it and strong desire to improve and never forget what I've learnt!
I have a passion for programming, but at the same time I think I'm somehow very noob in this Java, which I think it's best for me to learn and horn my skills by working on the real-life projects, or at least like what you have done, put your daily problems with Java, hey i never think of this before. But I have one question, wouldn't Java be quite resource intensive if you run those applications on your PC or notebook computer? I'm always reserved for developing Java application that run on my non Intel Core Duo processor based notebook. It's only running on a Pentium M, and it's 2 and a half years old. LOL..
The resources you have just passed to me could be very useful if I'm up to the tasks. I would love to develop something for my own use too! I'm really thinking of doing that even though I'm quite concerned about the afore-mentioned performance issue.
Keeping Java as a hobby is fun and I can always think of something that some other language may not be up to the job, that Java can easily achieve it, or with some efforts. I don't know whether I would ever have the chance to become a Java programmer, but I will definitely be having fun and enjoy programming with Java. I wish to develop something "real" platform-independant, that can talk with different type of application regardless of what's the language used to develop them.
Meanwhile, I think I'm a bit overly ambitious while telling people, I don't mind doing Java game programming too. But I would love to develop games in C if possible. For Java, I would prefer to start from mobile Java games for mobile phones. That would be cool. Imagine myself playing and enjoying the game I have developed and sharing with my friends and people would love that game. Wow, all the efforts pay off.
Mind to share how you learn Java throughout the years? Is it like what you mentioned in your post above? =)

I want to create a PowerPoint presentation using Java. (My Data will be in XML and I'll have to generate slides with Flow-Charts from that data)

I know of only one commercial Library that seems to do this very comfortably. But it costs about $5000... (http://tonicsystems.com/) - have you used it?
2.
I know that I could use Apache's POI (http://jakarta.apache.org/poi/), as it gives me access to the MsOLE 2 compound doc. format, but their work is most developed only for Excel and Word. so I'm not sure what kind of obstracles I'd be facing....
3.
And then there is JAWIN (http://jawinproject.sourceforge.net/) which would enable me to call COM-Components... How would I do that?
Any other /better ideas?
So, please let me know your thoughts and if you know what I could do!

For example: rows(1).height
I can get rows. but not rows(1).

Well. You say you want to insert a node as a child of another node, and it needs to be inserted before a certain other child node.
There's an insertBefore() method in the Node interface. Use that.
And if you thought that was a challenging issue then you might as well give up writing DOM code right now.

TODAYS LITTLE CHALLENGE FOR JAVA DEVELOPERS!!!

This challenge is related to EventListener.
I initialized a String i.e
String data = "myname";
What i wnat to do;
whenever the string data changes some event generate's so that in Listener
method i received the the data .
What kind of Listener should be used i not no.
Be sure not to initialize like this "static String data = "myname";

First, I think this is a cool idea, and there is a new language specifically designed to achieve this kind of event programming.
Second, I don't think this can be done with the Java language, at least not with the current Java architecture. Among the few problems implementing this, the greatest obstacle is here:
String data = "myname";
data = "myname"+i;Now, to event trigger this data = "myname" + i; , or to the JVM data = new String("myname" + i); , is problematic. The String variable data did not change value, it changed its reference. You can not intercept the = operator in Java. You can not change the String constructor behavior legally. (Well, even you do, it applies to all Strings and not just the data variable).
So, the only work around solution to achieve a similar effect is to wrap the String class to a MutableString class. (Note: wrap, not extend) And expose get/set method for this wrapper string class, then you can do whatever listener in the get/set method of your class. However, you still can not add listener for object reference change.
The above is only my take though. Do you have the answer to the challenge? I would love to hear others or the answer.

When I run their PHP version that works on a Linux System and
the Java Applet debugger on this is the result from the time the
file is handed off from the Java Applet to the PHP Code.
Can anyone tell if the file is actually being written to the
server then PHP is reading it from the server or is it just being
written to memory and PHP is reading a variable or memory block for
this data?

Challenge: How to create an BMP Java Bean from a DBF Database??

Hello guys....
This is my challenge and looking for some aim:
I was asked to create an application that must read from an existing DBF Database of products (That is already used by an administrative system) an build a Price List in Real Time. The program must be accesible through Intranet using a web browser.
The Appplication Client must be a faster GUI (Applet or App) that do not cause interference in the normal functions of the Administrative System that owns the DBF Database, but must propagate any change maded to the database in real time.
I was thinking to use BMP Entity Beans for manage the DBF Tables and Utility Beans to avoid constan access to the tables (As in Duke�s Bank Tutorial) but i do not know how to create a BMP Entity Bean without a Database that do not have an JDBC Driver ?????????
i was able to gain access to DBF TAbles using an small library called TinySQl but i get lost in this point....
any suggestions/comments about following matters will be apreciate:

Hello guys....
This is my challenge and looking for some aim:
I was asked to create an application that must read
from an existing DBF Database of products (That is
already used by an administrative system) an build a
Price List in Real Time. The program must be
accesible through Intranet using a web browser.
The Appplication Client must be a faster GUI (Applet
or App) that do not cause interference in the normal
functions of the Administrative System that owns the
DBF Database, but must propagate any change maded to
the database in real time.
I was thinking to use BMP Entity Beans for manage the
DBF Tables and Utility Beans to avoid constan access
to the tables (As in Duke�s Bank Tutorial) but i do
not know how to create a BMP Entity Bean without a
Database that do not have an JDBC Driver ?????????
i was able to gain access to DBF TAbles using an
small library called TinySQl but i get lost in this
point....
any suggestions/comments about following matters will
be apreciate:
1.- Application Performance Tips
2.- A better JDBC Driver for DBF Databases
3.- Application�s Security
4.- User Management
5.- Any comments in general !!!!!!!!!!

The Challenge of Java

Dear All,
I have been learning Java for about half a year now, but I am still uncertain about its design philosophy.
My questions are:
1. If I were to create a GUI based program, how should I manage the creation of frames (in main() or somewhere else), state of the GUI components (frame, panel, window, etdc.) and lots more. Is there any site or documents or books that can guide me on this?
2. How to segregrate the the codes from GUI construction to underlying functionality, and the state of the GUI?
My questions may be vague but I really hope that someone can show me the path. Thanks!

if you are using AWT you will need to implement a LayoutManager(an interface)

eg This one of the first GUI programs it uses a Card Layout (like a box of index cards) with some functionality. Have a look at the online documentation and play about with the code. Good luck

How to create a TOOLBOX using Java - a real CHALLENGE for U

Hello,
I want to create a Toolbox using Java which will contain different components of my interest.I should be able to select one component and paste it in a frame also be able set the property of individual component after placing in the frame,just like VB toolbox.
Can anybody suggest with code samples??

You are essentially asking how to write an IDE (Integrated Development Environment). This is a big question. You might start by looking at existing IDE's (JBuilder, Forte...) and see how they do it. If you want source, there is probably an open source IDE you can lift most of your code from.

A simple Challenge to Java Programmer's for JTabel

people who would otherwise answer your questions.You know, usually I'd frown at someone telling me "God bless you", too. But for some reason, I almost replied "thanks" to this one. Maybe because I usually don't get to hear it.
I guess I need to calm down a little, basically it's the same as "I wish you luck in your life", and I wouldn't be offended at that one. Nobody forces me to believe in Allah or God, but they do belive in them, and if they wish their deity to watch over me - it's a very nice gesture. I want to pass along a couple of tips that will get you more and better response on this list.
1) There is an un-written rule that says more "stars" is better than just one star. Giving a one star rating will probably eliminate that responder from individuals that are willing to anser your question.
2) If someone gives you an answer that meets your needs, reply to that answer and say that it worked.
3) If someone suggests that you look at an example, DO IT! LV comes with a wonderful set of examples that demonstate almost all of the core functionality of LV. Familiarity with all of the LV examples will get you through about 80% of the Certified LabVIEW Developer exam.
4) If you have a question first search the examples for something tha
t may help you. If you can not find an example that is exactly what you want, find one that is close and post a question along the lines of "I want to do something similar to example X, how can I modify it to do Y".
5) Some of the greatest LabVIEW minds offer there services and advice for free on this exchange. If you treat them good, they can get you through almost every challenge that can be encountered in LV.
6) If English is not your native language, post your question in the language you favor. There is probably someone around that can help. "We're big, we're bad, we're international!"
