Java parallel port distance measurement

I can't figure out how can i measure distance using parallel port with java. i want to create a program in which i will point a laser with the light dependent resistor connected to parallel port and the program will read how far the laser is pointing at... is there a way to do this? sorry if post on a wrong place

Can you access a parrallel port in java? Yes. There is an api specification for that of which, based on posts here (not personal experience) the best seems to be rxtx at [http://www.rxtx.org/]
As for whether the device allows you do what you want I have no idea. That would depend on the device and the interface to it.

    Hi there
i have connected a DOT- MATRIX printer to my parallel port.i opened port lpt1 as if it were a file .Printing is fine. But if the printer is offline or disconnected my program does not throw an exception.I need to find out whether the printer is connected or not..

Might this be because of the windows print spooler? Or have you turned that off?

  • HOW TO ACCESS PARALLEL PORT USING JAVA

hello guys.. Please Solve my Problem..
I have to access motor through pc using Parallel Port. I want to know how to program in java to access Parallel Port. So How can i code to access the any Port of Parallel Port. Please Guide me in this..

well I cannot give a more detailed answer than "use the java comm API".
    http://java.sun.com/products/javacomm/
    http://java.sun.com/developer/Books/javaprogramming/cookbook/11.pdf
However Java wasn't built to do these kinds of operations, so it may well be that the API does not provide the functionality you need. In that case you may need a native library to do the work for you, which can make things a lot more difficult.

    anyone please help me!!
I have to send binary data(of numbers 1-255) to parallel port in 8 bit format.
If you have code please send me or help me how to do so...

    One post is sufficient.

  • Java and parallel port

I don't know if this is forum I should ask this question but I didn't find any corresponding
    to java and ports control.
    I'm using Aurox 11.0 linux.
I wonder if I could control each output (DATA pin) of parallel port separately in
Java Communications API?. I can control outputs in Java with JNI but I need to run
program as root. If I would want to create applet which would use parallel port
I would have to create server with which this applet would communicate (Limitations of
applets). But this server would have to run as root. It would affect security of system.

Because of C++ ioperm function. This function requires root privileges. I have JNI Java
program which can control outputs of parallel port on the level of one byte (write
whole byte - all DATA outputs) and C++ program which can control outputs of port separately (control of each pin) and both are based on ioperm function. Both require
root privileges. So my question is: can I control each output pin separately with Java Communications API?. Maybe if I used wholly Java code I could access port with user privileges?.

    I have same problem...
No one more have solve this?
I alread have tried use RXTX library..
    but I have:
java.io.IOException: The device is not connected.
I think that pass-motor don't have correct response for pararell protocol (I need use it with direct write, no ack signal, no read, etc)

  • Parallel port not detected in measurement and automation explorer

I have installed labview 2010 in windows XP.
The problem what I am facing is I could not find "Serial & Parallel port" option in Measurement and automation explorer.
After seeing the similar problem in forum I have installed Ni-Daqmx 9.0.2.  But still I can not see the ports in MAX.
I think i have attached enough document .
If the parallel port is not detected in MAX can we send digital data to parallel port.
I have tested parallel port with LED connecting one leg in 1st data line(pin 2) and another in gnd(pin 25).
And my program is to blink the led for every one second but I cannot see the blinking.
Can anyone help in this regards
    thank you

Regarding my vi, now i changed it please see that also
I have given values to element of arrays as (1,2&4)
Now also it is not blinking instead it is glowing all the time without blinking.

  • My opatical equipment measures the brightness with using the parallel port.

How can I receive that data ? Plz...send me ur advices through e-mail.
    My address : [email protected]

    Hello,
You should probably be a bit more specific in your problem description. Please post your question in the software category that pertains to your application. For instance, if you are using LabVIEW to communicate with your parallel port, you may want to post your question in one of the LabVIEW categories.
    Good luck with your application.

  • Servo motor using parallel port

    Hello,
I have a XY mirror scan Servo motor used for optical scanning experiment.
    The question I have is:
I already have a program to control stepper motor via parallel port. Can I use the same to control servo motor ?
Or is the SERVO motor concept different to that of a STEPPER motor ...
    Thank you

You will need a DAQ card that can generate the voltage needed to send a command signal to the 671.  The 671 will need to be tuned to the 6880 with whatever sized mirror is attached.  (If you bought the galvo and servo driver as a package it should already be tuned.)
CTI systems take in an analog command from -10 to +10 Volts.  Almost all the NI DAQ cards (and many other brands) output +/- 10 Volts so that will be easy.
Then you will need to decide how to scan your target.  A ramp pattern or triangle wave is the usual choice for scanning objects so you need to generate that in LabVIEW code along with the code that will read your sensor.  This should be done simultaneously but you really don't need a very expensive DAQ card to accomplish that.  Look on the NI website for options in your price range and do some research...
Is your system one axis (one 6880 and one 671)?  If so you will scan a raster (ramp or triangle) to measure a single line of light intensity, move the stage a tiny distance and scan another line.  When you put all the lines together into a 2D image you will have a representation of one face of your object.  Many people use a rotary stage to spin the object while scanning to assemble a 3D model of the object.  This is a bit more complex of course.

  • Problem with JNI and Parallel Port dll

Hi. I'm doing some testes with JNI. Firs i followed the netbeans tutorial for doing a C programa that prints somthing for java.. like.. "Hello java from C".
So i tried to load a dll from my dll. Like, I have this dll to use the parallel port on windows Xp. So i created a dll to access it an comunicates eoth java.
    I did everything just fine.
When I start my Java app, the first thing it does is to load this parallel port dll and configure the functions of it.
After that .. I get this error
    EXCEPTION_FLT_STACK_CHECK (0xc0000092) at pc=0x0093d269, pid=2284, tid=3000
    Can someone explain why ?
(Sorry if i wasn't clear enough, english is not my native language, so ask if you don't understand something.. )

    hi ,
I met the same problem this morning, and searched the www.google.com in order to solve it, as a result, your article was shown on my screen. :)
Till now I have read some technical information and solved my problems. Maybe the solution be useful to you:

  • Problem in sending data to parallel port

    Hello,
I can open a parallel port (LPT1) using java comm api i,e javax.comm.
but problem in sending data to parallel port,
I choose the appropriate port(LPT1), it is in bi-directional mode according to BIOS configuration.
but according to the java program the mode is SSP.
when i write data to parallel port the volt-meter give a reading of high state for all data pin (pin1 to 9) i,e the parallel port doesnot change state. I am using windows XP.
    What is the solution?

try it on Open Solaris 10 or Linux platform.
    also just try using the new FileWriter("LPT1").write("Hello");
    on windows platform

  • Parallel Port Listener problem

    hello everyone,
I have downloaded the javax.comm package and installed it as given in the installation instructions. I can print my files using the javax.comm classes. But i do not get the Parallel Port Event even if i register a listener.
Also for all the methods such as is PrinterError(), isPrinterTimedOut(), isPaperOut() etc i do not get anything else but flase. Even if the printer is online or not, or if the paper is out etc, in all cases only false is returned by these methods. Please tel me what could be the problem.
All these methods return false even when the printer is online or not :
    parallelPort.isPrinterBusy()
    parallelPort.isPrinterError()
    parallelPort.isPrinterSelected()parallelPort.isPrinterTimedOut()
    parallelPort.isPaperOut()

Well, i think you should be looking for specs about the printer(s) to find out how they communicate with windows. That might not be that easy because not all company's will be very open about that. You should realise that any message windows gives you about the printerstatus comes to you via the drivers for that printer. The drivers know how to communicate with the printer, and that's different per printer.
The most used standard for printing is Postscript (I believe HP6L is a postscript printer) wich is supported by the 'bigger' printers. There will be info about Postscript on the web, but it is owned by Adobe and I son't know how free the specs are...
An older dot matrix printer is more likely to be using the lines that are signal out busy, error etc. You will find the pin layout here: http://www.doc.ic.ac.uk/~ih/doc/par/doc/regpins.html
If all your after is printing your files you might want to use java.awt.PrintJob wich will let you print through the spooler of the operating system, thus letting the OS handle the printer with the right drivers.

  • How to use the Control lines of a parallel port as Input lines to be read using Labview ?

    The details are :

We do not have any DAQ cards within the PC. We have the parallel port which is EPP and ECP compatible having the address 278h on LPT2 and we are trying use this port for reading 8bit data from an external circuit. We developed a vi program in Labview 5.0 to control the parallel port.We tried with the Data lines to send signals from PC to external device through this parallel port with the addr
    ess 278h (which
is Data lines) and it works fine. We also tried using reading 4bit data from external
device to PC through this port with the address 279h (which is Status lines) and it
    is also working fine.
But it was not possible for us to read through Control lines whose address is 27Ah. Whereas when line printer (dot matrix printer) was
connected, it was possible for us to take print out. Thus printer was working. This
informed us that the control lines are all OK!
Can you please clarify, how to use both control lines and status lines to read 8 bit data through this parallel port using the Labview software.

There are several Knowledge Base entries about this on the NI site, but probably the most detailed document is on the Advanced Measurements (www.advmeas.com) website. Try looking at this page, I think you will find it useful.

  • Parallel port access problem

    Hi all!
I'm trying to communicate with parallel port using the commapi version 2. Unfortunately, the api doesn't accept any other mode than SPP mode that is read-only. When I try to change the parallel port mode, I got an UnsupportedCommOperationException. I'm working with windows xp.
    Does anybody have an idea?
    Thanks!
    Thiago

    I have same problem...
No one more have solve this?
I alread have tried use RXTX library..
    but I have:
java.io.IOException: The device is not connected.
I think that pass-motor don't have correct response for pararell protocol (I need use it with direct write, no ack signal, no read, etc)

  • Parallel Port Programming

After series of trials and searching the forum i was able to get the commapi and install it. i want to design a simple program that can control circuits (i.e to on leds) . the problem is how to write a 1 or 0 bit to a particular pin. i saw different posts on this issue but still haven't got the real solution.
i also got to know about parport api and have downloaded and istalled it. but when i run the SimpleIO.java that comes with the package i get this error:
An unexpected exception has been detected in native code outside the VM.
    Unexpected Signal : EXCEPTION_PRIV_INSTRUCTION occurred at PC=0x10001057

NOTE: We are unable to locate the function name symbol for the error
just occurred. Please refer to release documentation for possible
    reason and solutions.
    Current Java thread:
    at parport.ParallelPort.readOneByte(Native Method)
    at parport.ParallelPort.read(ParallelPort.java:37)
    at SimpleIO.main(SimpleIO.java:8)
plz i want to know what's the cause of this problem, really can't go further on my own and i know nothing on native interface.
I would be grateful if i can achieve my objective without the parport also.
How can i write bits to the parallel port plz???????????????
    Thanx in advance

Why not communicate with the parallel port using the COMM API 2.0?
