JDK errors in Multiprocessor with weak memory model

When reading this article to understand some of the Double-check locking problems :
I got surprised by point 4. Appart the String example, it means that any build immutable object like build during a single-thread phase have no garanty later in multi-thread phase to be read a in fully initialized state.
So I checked implentation of some JDK classes to how is managed some static field. The first I checked (in JDK 1.4.1) is Locale.getDefaultLocale().
LOL in fact it's a case of double-check locking.
The internal comment is:
// do not synchronize this method - see 4071298
// it's OK if more than one default locale happens to be created
What is 4071298?
Secondly, setting two times the default locale isn't the problem with Double-check locking.
So any explanation this is ok? Or it's just a JDK example of wrong Double-check locking?

When talking about languages that run in a virtual machine, concern yourself only with the virtual machine, because that is where your code will be executed.
When talking about code that runs in a physical machine, concern yourself with the physical machine (CPU/RAM/etc.) because that is where your code will be executed.
In summary, concern yourself with the memory model of the machine that will run your code. Which is the Java VM in this case.

  • MSSQL 2008 R2 - 32bit, TSQL backup with compression, error: There is insufficient system memory in resource pool 'internal' to run this query

    Hello,
I would like to ask you about advice.
We have MSSQL 2008 R2, 32 bit. Memory is 4GB, split into 2GB for Windows and 2GB for applications. Database has recovery model simple because we have replicated data into other servers ( 2 ). Contemporary we work with 2 servers. Max memory for MSSQL is 2048
    MB.
We set the backup as follows:
    USE MSDB
    GO
    DECLARE @JMENO_ZALOHY VARCHAR(120)
    SELECT  @JMENO_ZALOHY = 'E:\backup\BackupSQL\1 Pondeli\DAVOSAM_'+ convert( varchar(2), datepart( hh, getdate() ) ) + '00_DEN_DIFF.bak'
    SELECT  @JMENO_ZALOHY
    BACKUP DATABASE [DAVOSAM]
    TO DISK = @JMENO_ZALOHY
    WITH INIT, DIFFERENTIAL, CHECKSUM, COMPRESSION
    GO
Every second or third day in log there is error message: 'There is insufficient system memory in resource pool 'internal' to run this query' Accurate in time of backup. The error is still repeat, majority in working hours.
Today I have found out, that problem is probably in compression of backup. Because if I removed word: compression, a backup normally runs without error.
Question: Is my hypothesis correct that problem is in backup with compression?
    Thank you David

Hello, today evening I have ran backup command bellow. All is OK. Probably MSSQL has cleaned memory. Next attempt I will try in peak next week.
Since time I have removed word compression, in error log is not any error.
I have checked memory as soon as memory gets on top, it is about 1.707 GB the MSSQL writes into log this messgages:

  • Synchronization with respect to the memory model

    Hi
Can anyone give paste me a link (other than to the JLS itself) that describes the meaning of synchronization with respect to the memory model rather than simply as a means of mutual exclusion?
You read that without synchronization different threads can have inconsistent views of what should be the same data. The link below talks of this issue but says 'the causes of memory consistency errors are complex and beyond the scope of this tutorial.'
    http://java.sun.com/docs/books/tutorial/essential/concurrency/memconsist.html
    Many thanks
    Bruce

There are many articles and a few book chapters or
parts thereof that deal with the new memory model,
and of course some key websites. The primary website
    is:
    http://www.cs.umd.edu/~pugh/java/memoryModel/
Brian Goetz has written a number of articles on IBM's
DeveloperWorks, and of course this is covered in
great depth in "Java Concurrency in Practice" by
    Goetz et al.
I also covered it in the threading chapter of "The
Java Programming Language, 4th edition". :)
    A few key points:
    - access to volatile long/double has always been
atomic (old JMM and Java 5 JMM), but remeber that
access means a simple read, or a simple write,
something like ++ is not atomic because it is a read
    followed by a write
    - don't think of this in terms of "caches" - that
will lead to the wrong reasoning. It isn't about
flushing caches or writing to main memory (that was
the old conceptual model that just gets people into
trouble because they keep trying to reconcile it with
how the hardware chaching works). The new memory
model is all about establishing happens-before
relations ships between writes and reads of a
variable, so that the value allowed to be returned
from a read is the most recent value that was
    written.
I was under the belief that the previous MM was writen in the way that it was in order to allow flexibility in terms of instuction/read/write reordering, caching, synch block merging and any number of other things that may occur, such that vm's on various architectures could be written efficently.
Of course it could have been that vm writers on those various architectures took advantage of the slack nature of the spec to implement all of those non-standard interpretations of the spec :). Its definately a good thing that the spec has been redefined to make it clearer exactly what a java develper should expect.
    - the definitive source for this is actuall the
JSR-133 specification. Chapter 17 of the JLS 3e is
based on that spec but doesn't contain the full
details. (But you are better off reading Ch17 than
    the proper spec :) )matfud

  • 64 bit on jdk 1.4.2_10 with tomcat 5 - out of memory Xms500M Xmx1000

    Hello,
I recently toke over an existing project. The production server is an Itanium 64 bit. Jdk 1.4.2_10 is installed, tomcat 5 is used as app server. The problem is that after a few days the tomcat proces runs out of memory after being hardly used. Because it takes some days to happen I rather ask here if somebody knows about problems with this configuration.
I suspect that using java5 could help out. I started up tomcat with plenty memory (500 / 1000). About 9 webapps are installed on the tomcat server. Any sugesstions are highly appreciated.
    regards,
    Dennis

    Hi,
You can get the HeapDump Analyzer for analyzing IBM AIX heapdumps from the below mentioned link.
    http://www.alphaworks.ibm.com/tech/heapanalyzer
    http://www-1.ibm.com/support/docview.wss?uid=swg21190608
    Prerequistes for obtaining a heapdump:
1.You have to add -XX:+HeapDumpOnOutOfMemoryError to the java options of the server (see note 710146,1053604) to get a heap dump on its occurance, automatically.
2.You can also generate heapdumps on request :
Add -XX:+HeapDumpOnCtrlBreak to the java options of the server
    (see note 710146).
Send signal SIGQUIT to the jlaunch process representing the
    server e.g. using kill -3 <jlaunch pid> (see note 710154).
The heap dump will be written to output file java_pid<pid>.hprof.<millitime> in:
    /usr/sap/<SID>/<instance>/j2ee/cluster/server<N> directory.
Both these parameters can be set together too to get the benefit of both the approaches.

  • IPad Air crashes with low memory error in Google Translate Web Site

My new iPad Air crashes with low memory error every time I try to use my Phrasebook in Google Translate Web site. This is rather disapointing considering that my old Nexus 10, that iPad Air is supposed to replace, works flawlessly in Google Translate Web site. Perhaps this has to do with the rather limited RAM (1GB) that iPad Air is equippoed with.
I would appreciate any recommendation, Thanks in advance.

  • Strange error in Zheevr with Studio Express 6/10

I have found a strange anomaly exposed by my code while testing Studio Express 6/10.
At runtime I was seeing a large number of copies of the error message
** On entry to ZHEEVR, parameter number 22 has an illegal value.
** On entry to ZHEEVR, parameter number 22 has an illegal value.
On closer investigation this arose in execution of the code
! Workspace query -- set "size(cwork,1)" to -1; this is stored in optimal_size
        optimal_size = -1
        call zheevr('v','a','u',N,matrix,size(matrix,1),1.0_dp,1.0_dp,1,1, &
           &        abs_tol,num_eigval,eigenvalues,eigenvectors,size(eigenvectors,1),isupp,cwork,optimal_size, &
           &        rwork,optimal_size,iwork,optimal_size, status)
        optimal_size = iwork(1)
        deallocate(iwork,stat=status)
if (status/=0) call io_abort('Error in deallocating iwork in algor_diagonalise_hermitian')
        allocate(iwork(optimal_size),stat=status)
        if (status/=0) call io_allocate_abort('iwork','algor_diagonalise_hermitian')
[.. deallocate and reallocate cwork and rwork similarly to iwork .]
        call zheevr('v','a','u',N,matrix,size(matrix,1),1.0_dp,1.0_dp,1,1, &
           &        abs_tol,num_eigval,eigenvalues,eigenvectors,size(eigenvectors,1),isupp,cwork,size(cwork,1), &
           &        rwork,size(rwork,1),iwork,size(iwork,1),status)
On return status=-22, corresponding to a size error in the "iwork" argument.
So in other words, the code makes an enquiry of the size to use for the iwork array, allocates an array
of that size. However the computational call rejects the size that the enquiry call advised!
If I allocate a larger array (size > 40*N) then the call succeeds and no error is generated. I should point out
that this code works well with Intel MKL, AMD ACML, GotoBLAS, and other LAPACK implementations, and
only fails with sunperf. If I link the Sun f95-compiled code against GotoBLAS instead of sunperf it also works
    correctly.
Is there some anomaly in the Sunperf implementation of zheevr?
The platform is x86_64 linux (Mandriva 2010) with 32-bit integer memory model. The matrix size of one
failing case was 4 and the first call of zheevr returned iwork(1)=32, though it fails for other small sizes too.

Yes, there are formulas for figuring out the optimal workspaces. For Studio Express 6/10, this is based on LAPACK version 3.1.1. The ZHEEVR interface
    and workspace formulas are :
SUBROUTINE ZHEEVR( JOBZ, RANGE, UPLO, N, A, LDA, VL, VU, IL, IU, ABSTOL, M, W, Z, LDZ, ISUPPZ, WORK, LWORK,
$ RWORK, LRWORK, IWORK, LIWORK, INFO )
    WORK (workspace/output) COMPLEX*16 array, dimension (MAX(1,LWORK))
    LWORK (input) INTEGER
The length of the array WORK. LWORK >= max(1,2*N)
For optimal efficiency, LWORK >= (NB+1)*N, where NB is the max of the blocksize for CHETRD and for CUNMTR as returned by ILAENV
You could just use MAX(1, 2*N) for the size of WORK. But this is sub-optimal. To get the optimal size, this is more work since it involves calls to
ILAENV. But it should give you better performance. Here is what calculating the optimal WORK size should look like :
    INTEGER ILAENV
    EXTERNAL ILAENV
    INTEGER LWMIN, NB
    LWMIN = MAX(1, 2*N)
    NB = ILAENV( 1, 'CHETRD', UPLO, N, -1, -1, -1 )
    NB = MAX( NB, ILAENV( 1, 'CUNMTR', UPLO, N, -1, -1, -1 ) )
    LWKOPT = MAX( ( NB+1 )*N, LWMIN )
    RWORK (workspace/output) REAL*8 array, dimension (MAX(1,LRWORK))
    LRWORK (input) INTEGER
The length of the array RWORK. LRWORK >= max(1,24*N)
So for RWORK, this is much simpler. Just make it MAX(1, 24*N)
IWORK (workspace/output) INTEGER array, dimension (MAX(1,LIWORK))
    LIWORK (input) INTEGER
The dimension of the array IWORK. LIWORK >= max(1,10*N)
IWORK is also simple. Just make it MAX(1, 10*N)
You can also view the source code for this at www.netlib.org if you need further details. Hope this helps.

  • Memory issues - kernel panics / system freezes with 1Gb Memory Card

I've recently updated my PowerBook OS to 10.4.7 and now more recently 10.4.8.
Prior to this, i had been running a pair of pc2700 memory cards (1x1Gb + 1x 512Mb) bought from crucial technology on 10.3.9 with no problems.
During the upgrade, i experienced complete system lock ups and kernel panics. pulling the 1Gb card resolved the problem.
So i thought it could be duff memory (it happens). I ran hardware checker, both long and short tests, ran memchecker from single user and there was no reported errors although i was still getting crashes.
I returned the memory to crucial and they replaced it and then i went to reinstall memory in the pb.
Once reinstalled, problems re-emerged. Both System profiler and iStat pro show both memory sticks as ok. both are pc2700 DDR.
i tried just the 1 Gb stick in alternate memory slots. with the memory in the lower slot i was getting system freezes, in the top slot i was getting kernel panics.
I've pulled the 1Gb and reverted to 768Mb (512Mb lower (crucial)/ 256MB (apple) upper) and i'm back to normal.
    Now what?
As my mac is getting on, i'd like to get as much RAM in it as i can, ideally the 1.5Gb /2Gb which it can support. I'd be suprised if it could be the memory stick being duff (2 duff in a row?), its not a faulty memory slot as system profiler is showing that its full.
Any suggestions? Anything to do with how 10.4.8 handles the memory addressing?
    Any help would be appreciated.
    PowerBook G4 1Ghz FW800   Mac OS X (10.4.8)

I've had that problem, too. I found out that it was one of my memory modules that were broken.
I'd say pop back in your other memory module, then get out your PowerBook DVD and stick it in Restart your PowerBook while holding down the Option Key on your keyboard until some buttons start to show up on your screen.
Select the Hardware Test one, then click the Arrow button. It'll boot into a utility and you can run a hardware test that includes checking your memory.
If any of your memory is bad, it'll show up like "**ERROR ERROR**" and give you a code.
After you've identified the hardware problem (hopefully just the RAM), then you can go to Crucial's website and fill out an RMA request to have the memory replaced. I'm pretty sure Crucial has a life-time warranty on their memory products.

  • Help Needed REP-1800 Formatter error VGS-1701 Not enough memory

    Hi. Gents
    Help needed
I’m working on a Report, it gets some 2 million records and the report pages are approximately 52,000
It works fine if the pages are lesser then 48,000 or the data is less let say one and half a million, the problem occurs only after 48000 + pages formatted.
Report is generated successfully when trying to go to the last page it throw an error.
    REP-1800 Formatter error
    VGS-1701 Not enough memory
I have already gone through the metalink DOC Id 95505.1 as well as OTN
    But all in vain,
Any comments or help much appreciated.
    Details are:

    Computer:
    Pentium(R) 4, CPU 3.00GHz, 1 GB of RAM
    Still 20 GB free space
    Thanks & Regards

I don't see the point in making a report with more than 48,000 pages, I think Al Gore will not be happy when you start printing it...
The problem might be caused by the fact that Reports needs to format all output at once, and then even 1GB of memory will probably be not enough. Formatting all pages at once is needed if you use pagination with displaying total number of pages. If you have this, try to get that out of the report definition and try again.

    I'm running and iMac 20-inch  early 2009
Processor  2.66 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo
    Memory  8 GB 1067 MHz DDR3
Graphics  NVIDIA GeForce 9400 256 MB
    Software  OS X 10.8.4 (12E55)

    Step 1
Quit Calendar. Triple-click the line below to select it:
    ~/Library/Calendars/Calendar Cache
Right-click or control-click the highlighted line and select
    Services ▹ Reveal
from the contextual menu. A Finder window should open with a file named "Calendar Cache" selected.
Move the selected file to the Trash. There may be one or two other files in the same folder with names that begin in "Calendar Cache". If so, delete those files too.
    Step 2
Empty the Trash if you haven't already done so. If you use iPhoto, empty its internal Trash as well:
    iPhoto ▹ Empty Trash
Then reboot. That will temporarily free up some space.
According to Apple documentation, you need at least 9 GB of available space on the startup volume (as shown in the Finder Info window) for normal operation. You also need enough space left over to allow for growth of your data. There is little or no performance advantage to having more available space than the minimum Apple recommends. Available storage space that you'll never use is wasted space.
To locate large files, you can use Spotlight. That method may not find large folders that contain a lot of small files.
You can more effectively use a tool such as OmniDiskSweeper (ODS) to explore your volume and find out what's taking up the space. You can also delete files with it, but don't do that unless you're sure that you know what you're deleting and that all data is safely backed up. That means you have multiple backups, not just one.
Deleting files inside an iPhoto or Aperture library will corrupt the library. Any changes to a photo library must be made from within the application that created it. The same goes for Mail files.
Proceed further only if the problem isn't solved by the above steps.
ODS can't see the whole filesystem when you run it just by double-clicking; it only sees files that you have permission to read. To see everything, you have to run it as root.
    Back up all data now.
Install ODS in the Applications folder as usual. Quit it if it's running.
Triple-click the line of text below to select it, then copy the selected text to the Clipboard (command-C):
    sudo /Applications/OmniDiskSweeper.app/Contents/MacOS/OmniDiskSweeper
Launch the Terminal application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Terminal in the icon grid.
Paste into the Terminal window (command-V). You'll be prompted for your login password, which won't be displayed when you type it. You may get a one-time warning not to screw up. If you see a message that your username "is not in the sudoers file," then you're not logged in as an administrator.
The application window will open, eventually showing all files in all folders. It may take some minutes for ODS to list all the files.
I don't recommend that you make a habit of doing this. Don't delete anything while running ODS as root. If something needs to be deleted, make sure you know what it is and how it got there, and then delete it by other, safer, means. When in doubt, leave it alone or ask for guidance.
When you're done with ODS, quit it and also quit Terminal.

  • Error in WebDynpro with WebServices

    Hi all,
I’m getting some errors using applications deployed in WEB AS SP9 that runs as a WebDynpro IView in EP.
Running the application as standalone (out of EP) this works fine.
    NetWeaver Developer Studio 2.0.9
WebDynpro application using WebServices that access Oracle 8i database in the follow sequence:
WebServices -> Session Bean stateless -> Entity Bean CMP (manage connections; generate sql code, etc.)
In WebDynpro application we import WebService Model by the follow sequence:
New Model - Import Web Service Model - Local Server for WSDL Source - <WebService deployed>
In each WebServices we have created these methods:
    findByID(ID);
    getAll();
    insert(parameters);
    remove(ID);
    update(parameters);
We guess that the error is generated in Entity Bean because all WebServices generate these errors.

  • Error Code 10 with GPIB PCI Card

PC used: Dell optiplex GX110, lastest Bios release, Windows 2000 SP4, GPIB Drivers version 2.2, Local Admin session.
After having install the driver (without the GPIB)and plug the card, this one is automaticaly recognised by the Os.
But, after the reboot (asked by the OS to validate the installation), the GPIB card appears, in the device manager, with an error code 10 (not started)....
I tried with two (new) differents GPIB PCI Card, two OS (First time with NT4.0 SP6 Drivers 1.7 and now, Win2000 SP4 Drivers 2.2) and with two PCs Dell Optiplex GX110 !
I even tried with a "Ghost" from an other PC (also an Optiplex GX110, with the same model of GPIB Card)
-> I obtain the same error each time !
    Help me please..........

    Hello,
Could you give me the exact reference of the board (PCI-GPIB, PCI-GPIB+, AT-GPIB, AT/GPIB-TNT...)?
Is the error code displayed on the Windows device manager (in the properties dialog box of the device)?
What is the exact description of the error code?
A PCI-GPIB installation do not need to reboot the OS if the NI-488.2 driver is correctly installed. The board should be recognized in MAX and you must be able to scan for instruments and start I/O communication with the device from test panels in MAX.
Update me as soon as you receive another feedback.
    Regards.

  • Downloading itunes, I receive the error "there is not enough memory".  How do I fix the memory issue?

When dowloadning tunes, I receive the error "there is not enough memory.  I've deleted tunes from my library & ipod and I still get the error. How do I get around this?

It could be the newer version of iTunes requires more physical memory than your computer currently has available.
Do a right click on "My computer" and check out your computers memory/RAM specifications.
Windows XP is a bit bloated in the latest updates, trying to get people to upgrade to Windows 7, might be little room for other programs, especially one as huge as iTunes.
If you finally do choose a new machine, I have some tips:
For 3D gaming laptops, I wouldn't pick any graphics card scoring less than 1000 on this sites scale. Not scoring less than 2000 for towers.
    http://www.videocardbenchmark.net/high_end_gpus.html
I would also choose a quad core processor scoring 5000 or better on this scale,  64 bit,  Windows 7 Pro (so you can virtualize your XP programs) or OS X, and 4GB of RAM expandable to at least 8GB or future proofing your investment.
    http://www.cpubenchmark.net/high_end_cpus.html
I would also choose 7,200 RPM hard drives for both towers and laptops for performance. On laptops while using the battery, set the energy savings to stop the hard drive spinning when not in use. Only choose the slower 5,400 RPM drive option if your always on battery and need maximum life as you lose about 20% with the faster drive, but gain 20% or more in performance.
Dual cores and 32 bit processors/OS with their 4GB RAM limit is soon to be old news.
For laptops, I highly recommend anti-glare displays for maximum use in any environment.

  • Does the standard Intel HD Graphics 4000 in the 13 inch Macbook pro stand up to other graphics cards with dedicated memory ( 1GB of memory for instance)?

Does the standard Intel HD Graphics 4000 in the 13 inch Macbook pro stand up to other graphics cards with dedicated memory ( 1GB of memory for instance)? I need a laptop for college and the Engineering program suggests a dedicated video card with minimum 1GB of video memory.

I have a Intel HD 4000 in my Mac Mini (late 2012), and it's okay for what I need it.
    However:
    - there were a few issues with flickering on the video output to external monitors. These were solved through a firmware update that came with OSX 10.8.3 - for the majority of the users. There is apparently still a small group of users that still has issues. You can read long threads about this here:
    https://discussions.apple.com/thread/4472316?start=0&tstart=0
    and here
    https://discussions.apple.com/thread/4490924?start=0&tstart=0
So for most of us (me included) this issue is solved, but it seems that certain displays / monitors don't work well with the intel HD4000, don't know if there is a pattern or a list of monitor models...
    - there was an issue with the color calibration on the HDMI output. No matter how much you tried to calibrate, the results remained unsatisfying. All light colors were crushed to white, wrong contrast, ...
You can read about this here:
    http://forums.macrumors.com/showthread.php?t=1482487
    https://discussions.apple.com/thread/4480354?start=0&tstart=0
The same firmware update improved this a little, good enough for me, but I can imagine it's not good enough if you do graphic work and need reliable colors from your monitor. On HDMI output, the thunderbolt/MDP output is fine. So it's mainly a dual monitor setup issue.
If it's for graphic work, I'd go for a Mac Book Pro with dedicated GPU !
