JPEG Export: I need browser-independant colors!

Hello,
Let me explain my situation: I have a website where I publish my Illustrator documents as exported JPEG files. The website has a certain RGB-color background. And my illustrations have the same RGB-color background. Those two backgrounds have to match perfectly, in order to produce a nice effect. They do match in Firefox 14, but they don't match in Safari 6.
So, I need my exported JPEG files to have browser-independant colors. I read everything I found on the Internet on this topic, but it's just general stuff about Color profiles and the Edit > Colors... menu and color differences between browsers. NOT A SINGLE TUTORIAL on the whole Internet on how to produce browser-independant JPEG files using Adobe software.
Currently, I am exporting my Illustrator documents using an AppleScript, in order to save time:
  export docRef to file (myPath) as JPEG with options {quality:60, optimization:true, antialiasing:true, artboard clipping:true, saving as HTML:false}
but you don't have to give me an AppleScript necessarily. Just give step-by-step instructions on how to do this in Illustrator, and I will automate it myself. Thank you for reading, and I am hoping that you will have a solution!
P.S. I know that PNGs are browser-independant, but I would prefer JPEGs, because the size is smaller.

I created a 1px by 1px JPEG for the webpage background, and the colors still didn't match! I thought, maybe Safari 6 is being a smart-***, and is transforming my 1px by 1px JPEG into a solid color: so I created a 2px by 2px JPEG, and I added a small pattern. The colors still didn't match! At this point, I started suspecting it's a bug, since my website displays fine in Safari 5. My illustrations are shown using the CSS code "background: url(...jpg) no-repeat" so I searched for a possible bug in Safari 6 involving backgrounds. I found ONLY ONE PAGE on the whole Internet describing the bug:
[Pro] Dramatic colour shift with Safari 6 on Mountain Lion
http://freewaytalk.net/thread/view/114471
The page says "Exactly the same image changes color depending on whether it’s repeating or not". So I tried replacing "background: url(...jpg) no-repeat" with "repeat", "repeat-x", "repeat-y" and sure enough, the colors match when the background is repeated. To summarize, in Safari 6, there is an obscur bug involving the "background-repeat" property: when this property is set to "no-repeat", a color shift occurs in the image. It has nothing to do with Illustrator or JPEG format.
Sorry to have wasted your time!

  • JPEG Export Looks Saturated in Internet Explorer

I see this question in many forums and online but without a solution.
JPEG exports (sRBG) look overly saturated when viewed in Internet Explorer browser, including when uploading/viewing in Facebook, etc, etc.  In other words, the colors looks different between Lightroom and Internet Explorer.  (Colors looks the same between Lightroom and Photoshop though.)
As point of reference, when you download a sample JPEG image from Canon EOS's website (used to show sample images from their cameras) you see that those images also use sRGB profile.  They also look exactly the same no matter how you view them (Lightroom, Photoshop, Internet Explorer, Safari, etc.).
What is Lightroom doing to photos upon export to JPEG and you need Lightroom or Photoshop to see the same colors?
I saw some talk about it had to do with Lightroom presets and that you had to zero those out?  Any ideas from Windows users?

Have you got Firefox or Safari on your machine?  In which case, how do the images look in either of those browsers?  Or, if you're using Windows 7, how do the images look in Windows photo viewer?
Also, can you say what monitor you are using please?
I think it might be a colour management issue.  Internet Explorer is not colour managed (not even IE9), Lightroom and Photoshop are colour managed, so is Windows 7 photo viewer (but not the XP equivalent), so are Firefox and Safari (but not Chrome).  When there's a difference between how something looks in an non-colour-managed program and colour-manged programs then it's worth checking for colour management issues.
If your monitor has a wider gamut than sRGB, then you would expect IE9 and other non-managed programs to look over-saturated.

  • Jpeg export output is 'smudgy' vs Lr develop display

    Hello Gang -
I've been blaming smudged output on facebook & Flickr - but now I've seen the true culprit !
My Jpeg export output is quite 'smudgy' vs the Develop display - and even when I use export "Email" default it is still smudgy while the Develop module displays great detail...
what needs to be tweaked please?
    much thanks ~

    Hello -
    Ok - interesting:
I imported a jpeg into Lr and it looks very good - long story short - Windows Photo Viewer sucks
Viewed in Paint - looks good, viewed in FastPictureViewer - looks good.
Viewed in flickr - Bad.  I'm installing Chrome to see if its a firefox issue
I use firefox browser, I use sRGB as the export color space (although I see no difference among the 3 default kinds.
I canot find info as to whether WPV makes use of embedded icc profiles, and after googling and reading - I have not found info as to how I would know if I am "even including an embedded profile with the files"
Flickr and Facebook display my jpegs exactly as I see them in Windows Photo Viewer - which is different from how I see it in Lr's Develop Module - in that dark brown & blacks look smudgy with much reduced detail

What color space are you using for the exported JPEG files?  Are you even including an embedded profile with the files?
What do Flickr and Facebook do when confronted with an image containing a color profile?
What browser are you using to view the Flickr and Facebook images?

    Hi,
My images do not look the same as the way they appear in lightroom. Seems like they are loosing contrast/shadows.

  • Browser background color question

    Hello,
I have read in some article, that not all Browser background colors are readable by all computers.
So I am wondering: when I am choosing the right color for my website's Browser Background, can I pick any color from color picker?
Or should I only use certain "universal" color, which is guaranteed to be readable on any viewer's computer.
    Thank you .

Just as there are web-safe fonts, there are also web-safe colors. Your color window has all the information you need. See.....

  • When exporting out of lightroom the color of my picture channges significantly

I use windows 8 and tried exporting out of lightroom through firefox and this did not help either

Hi Shmuglak.  Thank you for the information.  I tried those things but did not work.    I just got windows 8 and just downloaded photoshop CC and Lightroom from the cloud.   My settings in Lightroom under preferences are :   Under jpeg preview it is checked on fast load data.   Under external editing the color space is prophoto.   Under additional external editor it is set to preset (Custom).  Under Default Develop Settings the only thing checked is apply auto mix when first converting to BW.   Under export module:   Location:   set to same as original folder and no check mark on add to catalog.   Under Post Processing I have tried do nothing and tried firefox.
It is funny that when I export a picture from lightroom using firefox that picture  pops for preview and the picture looks fine but then when I go to my email and try to email that same picture and use send with a file attachment the picture looks aweful on my desktop but when looking at it on the ipad or iphone the picture looks fine.
Any other suggestions would be great
    thank you

I don't know if this is your case but I have a similar problem (and has been helped out by some kind soul on this forum). The change of color may happen if you are re-importing the exported pictures into the Lightroom catalog. If this is what you are doing, some import presets may be applied and this may cause the color change. I'm talking about this setting, sheck if it is enabled. If it is, disable it and see if it helps.

  • RAW to JPEG export in Aperture 3

I've imported RAW + JPEG image pairs from my camera, and selected the RAW image as the master. I understand that Aperture uses the JPEG for display purposes. My question is this: when I export (it would be the version rather than the master), as, for example, when I want to send the file to a photo lab for print processing, is Aperture working from the JPEG file it imported, or from the master (RAW)? I've made some adjustments to the white balance and lighting. I noticed that when I export the image after the adjustment, that the JPEG file is the same size as the original JPEG file that was imported as part of the pair (in this case, about 2.5 mb). I bumped up the image quality for the export, which results in a larger JPEG file that is exported (9.3 mb). What I really want to know is, is Aperture just expanding my 2.5 mb JPEG (making a larger file, but still from a lossy format), or is it creating a new JPEG file of larger size from the RAW master (and therefore, less loss)? I hope my question makes sense. I can't find any information on this in the program documentation.

If somebody can explain the advantage, it will be nice BR Richard
The main advantage to shoot and import RAW + JPEG is for the processed JPEG from your camera.
If your camera has the ability to capture say Black & White and you grab some images that look good in camera, then when you import both into Aperture, you will have that B & W JPEG as well as the full color information RAW. If you like the JPEG enough, then the work is done. If not, you can use the full color data in the RAW and create your own B & W image using Aperture's tools.
The same applies if you like the camera's processing for color, filters, etc. It is a matter of convenience really, not born of necessity.
    Hope that helps.

  • JPEG exports - "optimize to file size"

just saw this tucked away in somebody's lengthy post, but i think it merits its own thread.
it would be very useful, and isnt very difficult, to implement a jpeg export option for auto-setting the quality slider based on "desired file size".
for instance, my web products need jpegs w/ a max of 800k. in PS, i have to dork around w/ the preview sliders to get this. in LR, there isnt a way. preferred for both would be UI for inputting the desired size and let the cpu do its job.
    this would rock.
    thanks
    matt

Yes. Generally speaking, would be nice to know the exported file size in terms of MB / KB, in addition to pixel dimensions which are already there.

  • Adding crop marks in jpeg export

    Hi All,
Is is possible to add crop marks in jpeg export similar to what we have in pdf export.
I see SnapshotUtils class but could not see any method to set crop marks.
What I need to do to set crop marks?
    Regards,
    Alam

Well, since there is no Crop Marks option when doing a JPEG Export (Snapshot) by hand, I would be very surprised if there were a plug-in API for it.
So I think you'll have to add your own Crop Marks before you do the JPEG Export. It isn't really that hard ... just a little tedious. You can get the general idea from the CropMarks.jsx script that comes with InDesign.

  • JPEG export preferences problems

    Hi.
I have indesig cs5.5 and tryed set export resolution and jpeg color space. But in my computer i can't because this properties don't existe.
In other computer this script read ok.
below the JPEG export preferences properties.
    The script
    tell application "Adobe InDesign CS5.5"
              tell JPEG export preferences
set JPEG export range to export range
                        set Exporting Spread to false
                        set Page String to "2"
                        set export resolution to 72
set jpeg color space to RGB
                        set JPEG Quality to low
              end tell
    end tell
    The properties
    {«class jpEr»:72, JPEG Quality:low, Page String:"2", JPEG export range:export range, JPEG Rendering style:baseline encoding, Exporting Spread:false, parent:application "Adobe InDesign CS5.5", object reference:JPEG export preferences of application "Adobe InDesign CS5.5"}
    Thanks

What was resolution in CS4 became exportResolution in CS5 (and CS5.5). Is it possible you mapped "Adobe InDesign CS5.5" to a CS4 installation on the machine it doesn't work on?
Also: I'm not an Applescript expert (or even really competent in it), so I'm probably going to embarrass myself, but... Have you tried copying and pasting the script's contents into a new file on the machine where it doesn't work rather than running the (compiled, or whatever) .scpt file?

  • JPEG Export fails in some way

    Hello guys,
we have developed a JPEG Export Plugin for InDesign server that worked fine for several years now, never having any problems. Now a strange issue occur and I need some help. When exporting an preview image of one page (containing textframes with text and tables) the preview image is correct if the dpi is smaller than 72 dpi (100% in our application). But when the dpi is equal or greater than 72 the text appears correctly on the image but the tables are missing. This problem occurs on CS4 but not on CS5 server, but there is no difference between the plugin implementation (beside the changes that were obligatory for porting the plugin to CS5). Maybe this is a known issue or someone has solution for it?
Here is the difference between the exported images (smaller than 72 dpi and greater or equal 72 dpi):

I do move some photos to OnOne or PS (for editing), then back to Aperture. In Aperture I would select-all (click) the photos I wanted to send to Sam's for printing then drag the selected items (all at the same time) onto the Sam's web site for processing/priniting. Another thought - on occassion I would have to switch-out flash-cards during shooting.
Ah there you go both pieces of the puzzle solved.
You're getting the Tiff files in Aperture from the use of the external editor. In the Aperture->Preferences->Export window is the settings for what file type to use with an external editor I'm sure your setting is Tiff.
And then by dragging the file out of Aperture rather then exporting it you are getting the Tiff.
    IMPORTANT Point:
By dragging the files out of Aperture you are not really exporting them you are getting the Aperture generated preview (or in the case of the Tiff files the original). The settings in the  Export window have NO effect on the image when you drag it out. In all likelihood you are not getting the size and/or resolution you think you are.
You should be exporting the versions by using the Export Versions button in the Export window. Once the versions are exported to a folder on your disk you can then drag those to the print web site. This will ensure you are getting the image size and resolution you want.

  • Illustrator applescript jpeg export options

    Mac, Illustrator CS4, Applescript
I need of a jpeg droplet that converts Illustrator files to jpegs. I was able to create one using the Image - Duplicate as JPEG.scpt script that comes with OSX by just adding .AI to the list of files to convert.
The problem is that Image Events was creating jpegs of my Illustrator CS4 files at 150ppi when i need smaller jpegs.
I changed the code to use Illustrator to open and export the jpeg instead of Image Events which does result in a 72ppi jpeg. The problem though is that i cant seem to get any of the jpeg export options to work, it seems like it just exports with default settings.
Id like to change the jpeg compression and id like to export the entire dimensions of the artboard and only the artboard. Artboard Clipping is a property under Jpeg export in the applescript references but it doesnt seem to work so i must be doing something wrong.
Any help would be very much appreciated!
    Attached is my applescript.
    Thanks
    J

OK i changed the code and I think I got it. Instead of setting a myOptions string variable and setting jpeg with myOptions I just typed it in at the export line. I also noticed that the resolution property i put in the options was causing a problem so i took that out.
I attached it for anyone who could use it.

  • Do I need to harmonize color space between LR and other photo editing programs.

I perform the majority of my editing work in Lightroom.  However, I also use some 3rd party applications (e.g. Nik, OnOne, etc.) in addition to Photoshop for special editing, etc.  I've noticed that the default color space for each of these applications is different.  Some default to Adobe RGBb, other sRGB and still others Pro Photo RGB.  Should I be using the same color space and bit depth across all of these programs?  When I export from LR, should that color space be the same as everything else?  I have noticed that when I export some images and take them to a retail store based print service that the colors appear dull and drab.  I believe that is because those mass producing print services don't read the color space in the JPEG correctly.  Does any of this make sense, or am I way off?  Thanks for everyone's input and time.

For your editing workflow, best is to keep the image in the same color space at all time. For final export you should convert to desiered space... for example sRGB for web, adobeRGB for print etc.

  • Exporting to Media Browser & Chapters etc

    Hi People,
I just finished editing my wedding video in iMovie 08 and everything looks great. I need to add chapters so that my relatives can skip to different locations in the movie. I read that the only way to add chapters is to add it to the media browser and then send it into garage band.....create the chapters there and then export it to iDVD. I tried this with a short test movie with only about 2 minutes of footage and it works fine. When I try to add my wedding video to the media browser it starts off and says it will take about 350 minutes to export...it exports for a few hours and then fails with an error (I think the error code might have been -43 but cant remember..and refers to startup disk, I think being too full..)
My wedding video is huge.. being 3 hours the raw files were about 50 or 60 gig. I have done all of my editing from an external drive that has about 70 gig free and ideally this is where I would want to export the finished movie to. I do not have more than about 6gb left on my MacBook Pro...
1: Is there a way to make chapters without using media browser?
2: If media browser is the only option for chapters how can I get media browser to use the external drive when it is exporting.
    Thanks - Justin

1: Is there a way to make chapters without using media browser?
Yes. Garageband should be able to chapter any QT compatible video you can bring into it whether brought in via the Media Browser, the Finder, or "drag 'n dropped" from the desktop. Further, the Media Browser employs H.264/AAC compression as the export default, so while the files are small, it can take hours to compress very long files. You could, for instance, export your project to your hard drive via the "Using QT" export option to a less compressed format such as DV or AIC to your 70 GBs space with an AIC/Linear PCM probably requiring 30 plus GBs or a DV taking closer to 40 and I would normally expect this export to be quicker than H.264/AAC. However, if you still prefer the H.264/AAC built-in preset, use the "Export Movie..." option to select the same size file using the same Media Browser settings, but place the file on your external drive where you want it.
2: If media browser is the only option for chapters how can I get media browser to use the external drive when it is exporting.
Media Browser files are stored in a folder within a project's "package." Since these files are stored on the start-up drive by default and there is no user preference to relocate them, I would not normally recommend the average user attempt to set up the console workaround described elsewhere in this forum when so many other easier solutions are open to you in this case.
ADDITION NOTES: Don't know if you are burning to dual-layer device or not. (I.e., iDVD will not write a single-layer 3-hour DVD.) If not, you will need to consider burning you DVD content in two parts or using an alternate allowing longer burns and use of AC3 audio rather than iDVD's PCM.

  • JPEG, PNG, TGA, PDF changes hex color from PSD

I work for a company where the CEO is very into brand colors. He has the hex values of all the branded colors memorized. One of the branded colors is blue ( hex: 0039a6 ). Obviously, if he looks at my psd and samples a the color, it will display 0039a6.
However, whenever I save it out as a: jpg, tga, png, or pdf, the color's hex value will change to 1f419b. If he samples from one of those files, crisis! Wrong branded color!
I've made 2 layers and filled with with both colors and as far as I can tell, they are exactly the same to the eye, even if they're overlapping. So I just want to know why this happens so I can explain myself if he ever runs over to my desk.
    Thanks!

Oh right, this is happening with Photoshop and Illustrator, which is why is didn't post on an individual programs forums. I forgot to add that to my previous post. Do you recommend that I post in both the Photoshop and Illustrator sections?
Edit: I did more tests. If I use the branded color 0039a6 in Illustrator and save it out as a png, tga, jpeg, pdf, and I then open one of those exported files in Photoshop, the hex value has changed.
If I use the branded color in Photoshop, exporting a png keeps the color as the correct hex value. JPG doesn't, which makes sense due to compression. So now the question is, why are the files I'm exporting from Illustrator and opening in Photoshop showing different hex values. You would assume that the pngs should be okay from both Photoshop and Illustrator?
