JRE 1.4.2 on Windows 2000
Hi,
I'm running a java program on a Windows 2000 (Service Pack 4) machine using the JRE 1.4.2_06.
After a while the app. stops running and displays the message :
"javaw.exe has generated errors and will be closed by Windows.
You will need to restart the program.
An error log has been generated."
I don't have this problem on other systems like Windows 2000 (Service Pack 3), Windows XP (Service Pack 1).
Any idea?
Thanx,
Piet
I have heard that it is sometimes necessary to modify the plugin settings in the control panel in order to get the plugin to work with IE.
In the Control Panel, look for the Java Plugin icon. Double click. In the Advanced tab, you may need to select your Java Runtime Environment. Select JRE 1.4.2 rather than Use Java Plugin Default. I have heard that sometimes during installation that change does not take place. Note that in the first tab of the Plugin Settings you are able to select "Show Console" and that will allow you to see any error messages that may appear.

Hanging problems with JRE 1.4.0 and Windows 2000
We have written a Java application which is an editor using Swing components. Most of us happily run it on Windows 2000 PCs with a decent PC spec of 512 Mb RAM and 1 Gb Processors and Java JDK 1.4.0 installed. However, other users with smaller spec PCs of 128 Mb RAM and 450 MHz processors and using only the Java Runtime Environment v1.4.0 keep making the application hang.
I've done plenty of debugging and investigation and am now convinced that this is not our application software that is causing the problems - the hangs are never consistent in their behaviour. I don't think that lack of memory is the problem either as it hangs with no other application running and it only uses a small amount itself.
So what could cause this problem ? Is there a significant difference between using the JDK and JRE ? Could it be PC spec ? Are there some config settings that I should check ?
Any help would be appreciated as the application has become unusable for our users when we seem to be having no problems at all !
Sarah.I have been tring to track down a similar problem for quite some time, with no luck as of yet. On 4 out of 6 machines running Windows 2000 Pro, any application that I write using any graphical component AWT or Swing, will hang at run time using JDK 1.4. I have no solution for you but I am hoping this message might spark some more advice.

Error starting the 9iAS installer on Windows 2000 on P4 laptop
I am having problem running 9iAS Installer on my P4 Laptop.
any solution?Hi
I have successfully installed Oracle products in P4 hardware configuration and there is a know bug in Oracle & P4. Follow these steps below and I am sure that you will be successful in installing Oracle on P4.
Background:
When installing and configuring Oracle 8i to support a Syllabus Plus timetabling application on a Pentium 4 Server with Windows 2000 Advance Server, the following issues were encountered:
1. The Oracle 8i Universal Installer (OUI) aborts without notice
2. When installed using either the Oracle 9i OUI or the patched 8i OUI downloaded from Oracle Corporation, errors occurred during installation and java based configuration tools such as the Database Configuration Assistant and the Network Configuration Assistant would not run.
Problem Causes
Oracle Corporation have documented the following known issues:
1. The OUI 8.1.x fails to recognize the P4 processor and aborts without notice.
2. The OUI 8.1.x or above has problems on machines that use the Sun JRE and Symantec JIT. Windows 2000 (all versions) and Netware platforms are affected by this.
Work Around
The following work around has been used successfully at the Northern Territory University to overcome these problems.
1. Install Oracle 9i patched installer available from Oracle Technology Network website on the machine running on Pentium 4 Processor.
2. After installing Oracle Universal Installer, open file oraparam.ini and make the following modifications: (Assuming CD-ROM Drive is d: and you are installing Oracle from CD-ROM)
a. Change the Source= line to use the full path to the CD instead of relative path. (i.e. Source=d:\stage\products.jar)
b. Change the JRE_Location line to use the full path to the CD instead of relative path. (i.e. JRE_Location=d:\stage\components\oracle\swd\jre\1.1.7\1\datafiles\expanded)
c. Change the OUI_Location line to use the full path to the C drive (where the installer is installed) instead of relative path. (i.e. JRE_Location=c:\stage\components\oracle\swd\oui\1.6.0.9.0\1\datafiles\expanded)
d. Change the JRE_MEMORY_OPTIONS line to add -nojit as the first argument. (i.e. JRE_MEMORY_OPTIONS=-nojit ms16m ms32m) Other entries should remain same.
3. Launch OUI and this will use the modified oraparam.ini file and pick up the information from the CD-ROM. (since the absolute locations are specified)
4. Choose the custom install and choose not to create the database during the install. This way, the DBCA will not be launched during installation.
5. The Net8 Configuration assistant will still be launched and there is no way to suppress it. If you need to kill it due to installer hanging then in the configuration tools window highlight the Net8 Configuration Assistant and click Stop. If this does not work then look for the most recent JRE process using task manager and kill it manually. Note: The OUI itself will also have a jre process. Make sure to kill the only the most recent process.
6. After killing the configuration tool, continue through the installation to the End of Installation screen. We can modify the configuration tool to use this option nojit.
7. Once installation is complete, each of the following files in the ORACLE_HOME needs to be modified:
Each file will contain a command similar to the one following, which should be modified to include the option -nojit.
Eg: Command=(c:\program files\oracle\jre\1.1.7\bin\jrew nojit classpath.
a. assistants\dbca\dbassist.cl
b. assistants\dbma\dbmig.cl
c. assistants\ifa\ifa.cl
d. bin\owm.cl
e. ldap\oidamdin\oidadmin.cl
f. network\tools\netasst.cl
g. network\tools\netca.cl
h. owm\install\instelogin.cl
i. owm\install\instowm.cl
This (-nojit) is the only modification required to enable the configuration tools. After these changes the configuration tools like Net8CA and DBCA can be launched from the start menu.
Note: if your Oracle server is already installed and running but configuration tools are not running then just edit these files mentioned above (from a to i) and then launched configuration tools, they all will work.
Thank you

Installation problem on windows 2000
Hi,
Please help!
I've been tring to install oracle on windows 2000 machine unsuccessfully. the setup program aborted without error message. I've tried many versions of oracle database, 8.1.7 all editions, 8.1.6ee, 9iAS. the only message error I got when 9iAS failed to install (iSetup.exe). the problem seems to be with the java runtime environment. the jre 1.1.7 came with 9iAS would not run properly. I've tried to install java2 and jdk1.1.8 from javasoft, still no luck.
Any idea?
Thanks,

nullHi,
The problem of installing Oracle Product on P4 computers comes from the symcjit.dll (Java Jusit in time compiler) which doesn't recognize the P4.
I installed Oracle products on my P4 just by copying the CD's on a harddisk and manually replacing the dll (which is Version 3...) by a one I found to be Version 4.0.0.7.
It is maybe not the best solution as it can result some instability (I don't know yet) but at least I didn't bought a brand new computer for nothing.
The question is to know when Oracle will deliver some patches to allow a normal installation on P4s.
Let me know if you want me to send you the dll.

Exception_access_violation error on Windows 2000 Professional
Hello,
I am developing a stand-alone Java application that runs without any problem on Windows 98, XP, and most 2000 and NT machines. On some Windows 2000 Professional machines, however, attempting to run the program generates the following error. Is there something about the configuration of these machines that needs to be adjusted to make the program work? The JRE (1.4) and program installation are done in exactly the same way in each case. The only variation seems to be in the version of the operating system.
Any help much appreciated. Best reply gets 4 DD's!
Thanks much,
David

Oracle 8.1.7 client installer won't work under windows 2000
I am trying to run the latest oracle client install of 8.1.7 on my windows 2000 PC and when I double click on it, it show the hour glass for a few seconds, then nothing happens. No screens come up at all. I have a Dell PC with an ATI rage 16 MB ultra card and I have dowlnloaded the latest jre 1.1.8 and nothing helps. If I try another kind of PC like my ibm, the installer works fine. Dell has no answers??
I found the solution on another discussion group and it worked for WinNT4 SP6a:
First copy your CD content to your hard disk (by example c:\temp), then rename file "symcjit.dll" (by example "symcjit.old") in directory "c:\temp\Stage\Components\Oracle.swd.jre\1.1.7.30\1\DataFiles\Expanded\jre\win32\bin".
Finally, run Setup.exe in directory "c:\temp\Install\Win32". -

Can anyone help me, I'd really like to try this software out.
Thanks,
David.David,
Can you try passing in the 1.5 VM location manually as listed below
WorkshopInstaller.exe LAX_VM d:\bea\9server\jdk150_04\bin\java.exe
Can you also make sure that the 1.5 JVM value entry is the first entry in the PATH environment variable.
cheers

Install Oracle 8i Personald Edition on Windows 2000 Server SP2
Hi
I have problem to install the Oracle 8i Personal Edition on
Windows 2000 Server SP2.
I run the Setup.exe, I become the message (not exactly) “JRE
(Java Runtime Environment) was not found…… please visit
www.javasoft.com….. and install JRE version 1.1.7 or higher…”
Now, I have download and install this JRE (JavaTM 2 Runtime
Environment v 1.2.2_008 / Internationalized version of Java 2
Runtime Environment).
The error-messages comes again.
Have everyone a idea?hi phill...
why dont you try it out with the same CD and increase your RAM
by another 64MB? This will be enough. The reason is , most
Oracle 8i releases are combined with a java based Oracle
Universal Installer. This requires some good amount of RAM. Just
try it out with some extra memory. If this also didnt work, then
send in the problem,error with your system config. This will
help me in solving your problem.

Problem installing Oracle 8i(8.1.7) standard edition on windows 2000 server
I am trying to install Oracle 8i (8.1.7) standard edition on windows 2000 server but the setup program doesn't run.
It starts up, allocates some ram then closes before a window even pops up.
I also have MSSQL server installed on this computer, does that conflict?
Has anyone encountered this problem before? If so, please give a solution if you have one, thanks,
OPSYes. There is a bug with Pent4, Win2000 & Oracle8i.
Here is the workaround:
This is a known bug with Oracle java-based applications and Pentium 4 Use this work-around:
1) Copy the install directory from the CD to the hard disk.
2) Edit oraparam.ini and modify it as follows:
* Edit the "SOURCE=" line to to show the full path to the CD ; SOURCE={CD DRIVE LETTER}:\stage\products.jar)
* Edit the "JRE_LOCATION" line to show the full path to the CD ;
JRE_LOCATION={CD DRIVE
LETTER}:\stage\Components\oracle\swd\jre\1.1.7\1\DataFiles\Expanded)
* Edit the "OUI_LOCATION" line to show the full path to the CD ;
OUI_LOCATION={CD DRIVE
LETTER}:\stage\Components\oracle\swd\oui\1.6.0.9.0\1\DataFiles\Expanded
* Edit the "JRE_MEMORY_OPTIONS" line to include "-nojit" as the first argument ;
JRE_MEMORY_OPTIONS=-nojit
-ms16m -mx32m
3) Start setup.exe from your hard drive
Choose a Custom install and choose not to create a database during the install.
This way, the Database
Configuration Assistant will not be launched during installation. DONT SELECT
NET8 products for installation.
You need to put the same java parameters for the DB configurator and the Net8
Configurator
to run.
-nojit -ms16m -mx32m before -classpath on:
* assistants\dbca\DBAssist.cl
* network\tools\netca.cl
** Run the DataBaseConfigurationAssistant and NetworkConfigurationAssistant after installation.
Hope it helps!

Installing oracle 10g on windows 2000 server
hi masters,
this might look very silly question, and every child might know answer, but i would like to ask this question here that
i have oracle 9i release 2 installed on my windows server 2000 and an application is already running, now i want to install oracle 10g on same machine...
but when i try to launch oracle universal installer, it fails to launch it....whay is this so??? do i need to adjust some parameters to install it????
can anyone provide a checklist to check??i have an antivirus installed on machine...
any suggestion will be appreciable
thanks and regards
VDgot my answer, you can follow this step.
on windows 2000 server while launching oracle universal installer, due to jre bug (noted in metalink 266617.1 doc and 393070.1) installer CMD prompt launch and disapper in a while... so run following command on command prompt
to resolve the issue.. change directory path according to your directory structure.
change directory to your oracle installation setup.exe directory and execute following command
C:\>\backup\SoftwareBackup\Database10g\database\install\oui.exe -J-Dsun.java2d.noddraw=truethanks and regards

JCheckBox not displaying on Windows 2000
The JCheckBox is fully blackened when I start my GUI based application on Windows 2000
but it works fine on Windows XP ie displays fine.
jCheckBox = new javax.swing.JCheckBox();
jCheckBox.setName("StandardLineJCheckBox");
jCheckBox.setSelected(true);
jCheckBox.setText("Standard Lines");
Also this happens when I have JRE 1.4.2_05 . With JRE 1.3 both Windows 2000 and XP display
checkboxes fine. Anyy idea for a fix is appreciated.....
I tried jCheckBox.setBackground(java.awt.Color.white);
but that doesn't help too.i also experienced that too last time, when i try to use jre later than l.4.2_01 all these screen blank thing happened, so finally i chose to stick with old jre 1.4.2_01 and it work fine until now. i think the latest 1.5.0 should work fine

VM 1.4.2 running on Windows 2000
Hi,
I'm running a java program on a Windows 2000 (Service Pack 4) machine using the JRE 1.4.2_06.
Any idea?
Thanx,
PietWill you please generate "Dr Watson dump" of the JVM process?
To make drwtsn32 as your default debugger, follow these steps"
1. Click Start, and then click Run.
2. Type drwtsn32 -i, and then click OK.
To configure Dr. Watson, to produce dump file:
1. Click Start, and then click Run.
2. Type drwtsn32, and then click OK.
3. Please make sure that "Create Crash Dump File" option is checked. When crash occurs, a dump file (.dmp extension) will be produced in the file configured with the option "Crash Dump" (there is browse button near that option to specify the directory where you want the dump file to be created).
Please send us the Dr Watson dump file for further debugging. -

DB version required for Content DB install on windows 2000/2003
Hello,
I looked at the certification matrix for content db and regarding the database it looks strange :
o Oracle RDBMS 11.1.0.6.0 (or higher) (see Note#1)
o Oracle RDBMS 10.2.0.2 (or higher)
o Oracle RDBMS 10.1.0.5 (or higher)
I don't know what version should I download in order to install on windows 2000/2003.
the single version available for windows (with the required version number) on the download page of the database is
"Oracle Database 10g Release 2 (10.2.0.3) for Microsoft Windows Vista"
which is built especially for Vista. or is it ok to use it for 2000/2003 ?
for example in 10g release 1 I don't see any version >= 10.1.0.5. the greatest is 10.1.0.3. is it normal ? or do I misunderstood something ?
thanks,
FlorinWe had a similar problem when trying to pre-install the JRE, then run a web page with an applet in it. Apparently there is a bug in the JRE installer (1.3.1_01) that puts extraneous values into the registry (it's in the bug database somewhere). As a work-around, you can delete those values out of the registry. I had to do this in our installer with a simple C++ program.
Delete the INF values under:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Code Store Database\Distribution Units\{8AD9C840-044E-11D1-B3E9-00805F499D93}\DownloadInformation
and
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Code Store Database\Distribution Units\{CAFEEFAC-0013-0001-0001-ABCDEFFEDCBA}\DownloadInformation
('0013-0001-0001' <==> JRE 1.3.1_01. Replace with your version)
Hope this helps! -
Java not recognizing IPv6 is installed on windows 2000
Hello, I'm having an issue getting Java to recognize that IPv6 is installed on a windows 2000 SP4 box. I've installed IPv6, have set up link-local addresses, and DNS. I can ping other machines on my subnet with their IPv6 addresses perfectly fine. However, when I run an application that attempts to bind or connect to an IPv6 address, such as fe80::5%4 when specifying the scope-id, or even fe80::5 without the scope-id, Java throws an exception that the Protocol Family is not supported on my machine. I am using JRE 1.5.0_01 on the machine. Anyone know how I can get Java to recognize IPv6 is installed on my machine? Thanks
The IPv6 stack for Windows 2000 was a research stack - right? J2SE needs the updated and integrated stack that came with Windows XP SP1 or 2003 Server. See:
