Jrun.exe

Hi,
I'm having a few problems with Coldfusion 8 on a windows 2003 box. Over the last few months the jrun.exe has been creeping upto 99% and locking until I Kill the process.
Some weeks it will go without a problem and then all of a sudden it will need killing 5 or 6 times a day.
Has anyone any ideas as I cant see a pattern. I've done a search and tried a few things such as logging slow pages etc but nothing has worked so far.
Thanks for any help.
Craig.

Thanks for the reply:
The log files haven't reported anything, I've even archived them off so I can spot things a little easier.
The high cpu happens at random times, last two mornings it;s been high, but today it's not. (Although I did archive the log files of yesterday).
The Server has 2GB RAM, XEON 2.4GHz processr, bags of HD space.
Not sure about memory allocation for JVM (how do I check?)
I'm using SQL 2005 on another server
Hosting is all in house to the company, traffic is largely internal but not heavy traffic at all.

  • CF8 jrun.exe memory usage

    Hello-
Thanks in advance. I've installed an eval version of CF8 on
my (future) production server running Windows 2003 Server Standard.
I've noticed jrun.exe is using about 160+MB of RAM. That seems high
to me, so I installed it on my development machine and noticed it's
using the same amount. Is this normal? It seems high considering
CF7 was using about 55MB. I've scoured the forums (and Google) to
see if there's any info on this, but no luck.
    Your input is appreciated.
    Thanks,
    Peter

I meant eight hundred megabytes to one gigabyte, of RAM, in
use, times two instances per physical box. :)
We're doing about 3.5 million page hits per day on one
app/web server for a corporate intranet. So we run high in the
    memory usage department.

  • Jrun.exe Memory Issue

I am using Coldfusion 8 Developer Edition as a testing server
for Dreamweaver website development. I am running Windows Vista
Home Premium and 2 Gig of memory. When I start my computer I run
into memory issues which I have traced to jrun.exe which is a part
of Coldfusion. For maybe the first hour jrun is using well over a
half a gig of member. After that it drops to about 60,000k. Does
anyone know of a way to reduce that?
I am a mid level user with no server admin experience beyond
setting up CF developer edition using mostly default settings. I
have found support articles about this problem, but all of them
were way over my head. Any suggestions need to be very specific and
    not in server admin jargon.

You can try reducing the max heap for the java in the
coldfusion administrator to little bit lower value so the garbage
collection might happen sooner. Its not easy to say how much max
heap you should set as it totally depends on your application
usage. Also, you can try to upgrade your java version to see if
    that improves garbage collection.

  • Multiple instances of jrun.exe running?

Is it common for there to be more than one instance of
jrun.exe running in a non-clustered installation of CF7? There have
been episodes where jrun.exe seems to get taxed on moderately size
queries. After looking at Task Manager on Win2K3 server - there are
sometimes 3 or 4 instances of jrun.exe running. The first instance
is usually very high (ex. 450 MB) while the other instance(s) hover
around the 10-15 MB mark and remain constant. Does this sound like
an issue that can be controlled by CFAdmin or are there issues with
    our configuration:
    Win2K3 Server (VMWare instance)
CF7.01 (yes we know it needs a patch)
    512 MB RAM
Any thoughts on this is appreciated.
    Thanks.

    > Is it common for there to be more than one instance of
    jrun.exe running in a
    > non-clustered installation of CF7?
    Yes.
A multi-server install (not a clustered) of CF could well
    have one instance
of JRUN.EXE running for each CF instance. There's usually at
    least two: one
for the initial CF instance, and one for the JMC. You can
    switch the JMC
one off (starting it on the off-chance you need it, which is
    almost never).
    > The first instance is usually very high (ex. 450 MB)
    while the other
That's not especially high for a CF app server. We generally
    allocate the
max 1.3GB (on Windows) to the JVM that each CF instance is
    using.
    > 512 MB RAM
OK, that's not even enough RAM for a PC workstation these
    days, let alone a
server! W2k3 itself needs around a minimum of 400MB to run.
    The default
install of CF will want another 512MB.
I would not run a desktop PC on less than 2GB RAM these days.
    And make
    that 4GB for a server. A low-spec'ed one.

I found a similar post about this from 2 years ago (http://forums.adobe.com/thread/920226) but it had no responses. I'm hoping someone sees this and has some ideas. The server in question is running CF 9.01 Enterprise in multiserver configuration in a cluster with hf901-00008.jar  as the current patch level. all on Windows Server 2008 R2
We began having problems a couple of days ago where sites were unresponsive, restarting IIS seemed to be the only thing that fixed the issue. We also began seeing problems with application pools shutting off (or not starting when IIS was restarted)

This seems excessive and a waste of processor cycles if this is part of the normal class loading process...

This behavior occurs only If I put a <cfapplication> tag on my cfm page.
When I put the <cfapplication> tag in an explicit file Application.cfm, cfc syntax error messages appears correctly.
Maybe just a problem with my configuration (IIS7), but perhaps an indication...

  • Jrun.exe and jvm limits 32bit Win

I have two web servers running Windows 2003 Web Edition (32 bit) and CF 8 Standard. If I look in task manager the jrun.exe on both servers uses between 600-900 MB's. So does that mean if I combined the load off those two servers into one would it mean that jrun.exe would use between 1200-1800 MB's and if so would that then fail because of the JVM limit of 1.2 GB's in 32 bit windows?
    Thanks in advance!

A 32 bit JVM is going to have a hard limit of 1.8GB.  It is very hard to say whether or not you'll bump into the various memory limits if you combine two servers.
It all depends on what each server is doing and how hard each server is doing it.  As others have said, a lot of that memory useage you see in task manager is cached code, returned result sets and other misc data.
If both servers are running the same code and you load balance them, then you may be ok.
My recommendation would be to setup a 3rd box if you can and test the scenerio that you're proposing.

  • Jrun.exe memory leak

    Hi,
I had my brand new test server setup earlier this month with
everything clean installed. I'm having issue with jrun.exe memory
usage skyrocketing to 500mb+. jrun.exe also makes the sql queries
to respond slow. What i've been doing for past week is terminate
the process, and restart the server.
Event after restarting, sometimes it instantly goes back to
500mb+ usage. I'm testing farely small application on this server,
i dont think the application would be causing this issue.
I had the same problem before, thats why it lead me to get
new test server, but now event on brand new system, jrun to repeat
    same issue.
Beside coldfusion, i have sql server 2008, which runs
    perfectly normal throughout the week.
    Does anyone know the fix?
    Syed

Jrun's jvm memory usage is configurable in the jvm.config
file. It is most likely the default startup is defaulting to take
up a minimum of 500 MB. Different jvm's act differently and some
are better at memory management than others. This isn't necessarily
an indication of a memory leak, it's more the jvm's nature to act
in this manner. No matter what it's probably peaking around 1.5 GB
    if I had to guess.
I would look for other areas when it comes to performance, if
it's a small application and the only thing running on the CF
server. Look for things like unintentional loops, returning large
record sets from SQL, large values in session variables. Also never
store client variables in the registry. It could also be if you
have large db tables, you may need some indexing in the database.

  • Stop jrun.exe from running

    Hi guys anf girls,
My computer has been running pretty slow, so i did the
obvious and checked out the window task manager. There i had seen
an application "jrun.exe" eating a large chunk from my computers
    processing power.
I had googled it to find out what it is, and I now know its
from my coldfusion installation, a server. I done my research to
see how to stop this, where by opening up jrun.exe and stopping it.
The thing is, after i cancel it, it starts up again.
Can anyone point me in the right direction in how to actually
stop it and then manually start it. I have tried using the
administrator page but i dont know where to go.
I am using coldfusion 7, the latest developer edition.
    cheers
    Darren

ColdFusion runs as a service on windows. Several services
actually. The service names usually begin with ColdFusion MX 7. To
start or stop the services, use control panel > services. Select
each service, click properties then click stop or start.
If you do not want ColdFusion to start automatically when the
o/s boots, change the service properties from Automatic to
    Manual.

  • Help me stabilize this jRun configuration (CF9/Win2k3/IIS6)

    Hi everyone,
We've been struggling to keep our multi-server configuration stable for quite some time now.  At the end of last month we were running under CF 7.0.2 on a two servers setup (one instance each).  At that point we managed to get our uptime to around 1 week per instance before they would restart by themselves.  Since the beginning of the month we upgraded to CF 9 and we're back to square one with multi-restart a day.
Our current configuration is 2 Win2k3 servers, running a cluster of 4 instances, 2 instances per server. At this point we are pretty certain this is due to improper JVM settings.
We've been toying with them and while some are more stable than others we never quite got it right.
    From the default:
    java.args=-server -Xmx512m -Dsun.io.useCanonCaches=false -XX:MaxPermSize=192m -XX:+UseParallelGC -Dcoldfusion.rootDir={application.home}/
    To currently:
    java.args=-server -Xmx896m -Dsun.io.useCanonCaches=false -XX:MaxPermSize=512m -XX:SurvivorRatio=8 -XX:TargetSurvivorRatio=90 -XX:+UseParallelGC -Dcoldfusion.rootDir={application.home}/ -verbose:gc -Xloggc:c:/Jrun4/logs/gc/gcInstance1b.log
We have determined that we do need more than the default 512MB simply by monitoring with FusionReactor, on average our amount of memory consumed is hovering in the mid 300MB and can go up to low 700MB under heavy load.
Most of the crash will be logged in jrun4/bin/hs_err_pid*.log always an "Out of swap space"
The latest crash from yesterday generated the following log:
From it, I gather that its the PSPermGen that is full (most logs will show the same before a crash), which is why we increased MaxPermSize but the total still show as 107520K!??! I've attached the GC log after the HS_ERR.  No one here is a jRun expert, just developpers tasked with fixing this as best as we possibly can so any help would be greatly appreciated!!

    Hi! Thanks for the reply,
After much googling we've finally found a stable configuration.
    java.args=-server -Xmx768m -Xss64k -Dsun.io.useCanonCaches=false -XX:MaxPermSize=512m -XX:+UseParallelGC -Dcoldfusion.rootDir={application.home}/ -verbose:gc -Xloggc:c:/Jrun4/logs/gc/gcInstance1b.log
I tried playing with the survivor ratio but came back to the default when I didn't notice much improvement.  In the end what did it (pretty sure) is -Xss to reduce the requests size living on the stack.  Our large initial heap, perm + overhead combined with the default request size was causing the JVM to go over and blow up I think.
We've been stable for over a month now, the next step for us is to reduce the MaxPermSize a little at a time to find our optimal range.

  • CF 7.02 : jrun running out of control solutions anyone?

we’re running ColdFusion 7.02 on a Windows 2003 production server(IIS 6) that appears to have a memory leak or coding issues or both. The jrun.exe will run up to 1.2 gig of usage and higher in task manager. Somewhere above 900mg of usage the CF processes will lock up causing us to have to stop jrun and let it restart or in some cases, reboot the server. Obviously, this plays havoc with our CF applications and pages.  In addition, we have also located what appears to be coding errors in the CF application logs. some examples are, ‘dividing by zero’, ‘items undefined’, ‘access page timers being exceeded’.  As we are not CF programmers on our side of the issue  we don’t always know what effect these errors have on the processes on the server. The logs have been forwarded to our application support/programming section and it appears some corrections have been made and are continuing to be made.  On Monday,7/18, we were required to restart jrun approx 14 times throughout the day and evening on this server. This slowed through the rest of the week up to this point with some specific times when it had to be restarted at approx 3-4 hundred meg, instead of 900mg to 1.2 gig.
Update: many coding errors have been repaired over the last week and the high number of restarts has dropped but still present. On the ColdFusion side we have applied a hotfix 65335 which is suggested to work with the way jrun releases memory with file uploads. This didn’t appear to make any difference when applied but we suspect there is a problem with the path it was applied to. We are correcting that today.
I have also looked at one of the CF updater files to try but in the past applying one of these may have fixed one error but created others.
We are looking at the JVM version because I have seen in some of the blogs where there are a couple of less beneficial  versions and an upgrade can help. we’re at 1.4.2_09 but I’ve read where _13 or _19 would be better.
We are in the process of testing applications in the CF 8.0 region that is setup (and making it a priority)but this won’t happen overnight. May take several weeks.
Please, anyone who has seen similar errors with jrun in a 7.02 environment, can you offer some quick fix solutions, or even not-so-quick?
    Thanks

    Hi,
Check CF java logs around the time frame just before CF become unresponsive. CFMX7\runtime\logs\OUT and EVENT log.
Perhaps JVM settings would be interesting?
    HTH, Carl.

  • CF 6.1 - JRUN Closed Connection/Server errors occurring on a daily basis

We seem to be having issues with Jrun Closed Connection/Server errors occuring on a daily basis now. The server will stop responding to requests until the ColdFusion service is restarted.
We're using CF 6.1, the following error message is from the log files and seems to be Java/JVM related but I was hesitant to make any changes to the JVM parameters.
Any suggestions on how to resolve this daily issue of restarting CF service? Other than upgrading to more recent version of CF which we'll be doing later this year.
    Thanks,
    Dave

I guess Java non heap space Permanent Generation is full the next object trying to load into that space can’t fit, plus all the objects in there are referenced so no objects can be removed so free space can’t be made available. One would need to do some work with Java logging and know what JVM.CONFIG looks like to know if that guess is accurate.
You could try increase that parameter 10Mb or so and see what happens? In JVM.CONFIG, JVM args, -XX:MaxPermSize=NNm where NN = numbers.
Needless to say you are running a lot of end of life product and should plan to migrate to something more current.

It crashed 3 seconds after it is running. Should be reading some jar file.
Could be a something corrupted a zip file or something. Can you still do a java -version? You may want to try reinstalling 1.4.2_07

  • JRUN Memory Problem

It looks like Jrun is not installed in CFMX 7.02 Server, but
when you check through the Task Manager, Jrun.exe is running and
eating up a lot of memory causing the site to go down every 6
    hours.
I tried stop the JRUN through the Task Manager but it will
    not let me.
Why is this eating up a lot of memory when we are up to date
    with MX 7.02.
Does CFMX 7.02 need JRUN to run?

7 to 20 thousand rows could be a lot of data depending of
    what a row
consists. A singel small integer per row, not so bad. A clob
    in each
row, "holy memory meltdown bat man". Multiplied by how much
    traffic
this application gets. 10000 users an hour with a large data
    set, oh my!
You can not kill sessions when a user navigate through a
    bookmark or
direct URL, ect. Your server is never contacted again. You
    have to
develop your applications with this factor in mind.
No sessions do not die when a browser closes. If you have
    coded your
cookies ("cfid" & "cftoken") to expire when a browser
    closes, the
connection between an user client and a server session dies.
    But the
session data on the server exists until the session time out
    period.
The server has NO clue that the browser was closed and the
    cookies
deleted. The client does not notify the server of this event.
    All the
server can do is wait and see if a particular session key is
    ever
received again until it times out.
Thus we get to the 1 hour session time out. This is the final
    factor in
how much memory your application is using. How much memory
    does a
session use? How many sessions are building up? How many are
    being
abandoned so they wait the full hour before being cleared?
I would say this is a prime candidate for a memory bottleneck
    in your
application. You may need to experiment with the different
    factors to
see if this is a culprit.

  • Windows ColdFusion|Jrun weirdness.

We are running ColdFusion 9 on a Windows 2003 web server a in multi-home configuration.
We have four ColdFusion services configured on our system: cfusion, general, pur, and playground.  Looking at the Windows Services panel only the cfusion and playground ColdFusion services are started.  When we tried to start the other two, they fail to start with the following message in the Windows Event logs: "The ColdFusion 9 AS General service terminated with service-specific error 2".
So I started to search for more information about this.  During my research, I thought why not try the ColdFusion Enterprise Manager Instance Manger page in the ColdFusion Administrator.  This is where things become a bit wierd.  All the instances are running according to the Instance manager.  And further testing seems to confirm that this is true.  All the administrator pages work, applications running against each instance are working.  They seem to all be running.
Using the Microsoft|Sys Internals Process Explorer tool, we can see that there are only two jrunsvc processes running, the one for the cfusion instance and the one for the playground instance.  But there are four jrun.exe processes running.  How is this possible?
Looking at the properties of the processes with the Explore tool, we see that the jrun.exe processes that match the jrunsvc have this string:
jrun.exe -config jvm-cfusion.config -nohup -ntservice "ColdFusion 9 Default CFusion-StartEvent" -startByNTService "cfusion"
The two jrun.exe process that do not match a jrunsvc have this string: E:\JRun4\bin\jrun.exe -nohup -start -childVM pur
Can anybody provide some insight what all of this means?

Thank, I'll keep that bit of info in mind.  These do use custom configuration files, but they had not been modified since the server last started correctly.
Doing some more research it sounds like "Error 2" is rather a catch all error for non-starting ColdFusion services.  Our particular problem turned out to be a Network Interface Card (NIC) condfiguration problem.  The server had recently had it's wiring re-configured and they pluged the network cable into a different NIC port, instead of the original one that had a "static" ip configured.  The new NIC was configured to use a DHCP reserved IP of the same value as the static NIC.  This apparently really confused the windows server when it started up and took some amount of time for the poor machine to figure itself out.
Apparently too long for the two ColdFusion services that where configured to log on as a domain user and thus the user could not be authorized by the network controller and the services failed to start.  But by the time a human was notfied of all these problems, the machne had straightend itself out and was sucessfully connected to the network.  The services could be started manually by then with no problem.
Once we traked all that down and straightend out the NIC cards, the server started up just like it is supposed to. and all the CF Services start with no problems.

  • ColdFusion jrunsvc.exe pegged at 45%-50% with no utilization

    Hello,
    I have a box running Windows Server 2008 R2 x64 with ColdFusion 9 x64.
    IIS 7.5
I am noticing that the jrunsvc.exe (Which is the path file listed in the ColdFusion Application Service) is constantly being pegged at around 50% of CPU power.  I cannot figure this out.
    A few odd things:
If I kill jrunsvc.exe, coldfusion will still run perfectly fine under jrun.exe.  The ColdFusion Applicaiton service will have the option to 'start', but it is not actually stopped.  I can still query and everything.
Restarting all CF services and the operating system itself does not do the trick.  I am on version 9,0,1,274733
Any ideas?  I would like to avoid a full reinstallation if at all possible.  I'm also using the internal JVM.   Any config changes I can make?  Is anyone else experiencing this problem?
Nothing is showing up in any error logs, and I even stopped the websites on IIS.  I do not think this is user generated.
    Thanks!
    Michael

    This is coldfusion 9 enterprise.
Thanks for the help - this community is great!
Also, I keep the SOLR and the Search services disabled since I don't use them
I'm seeing this in the exception log - over and over and over again.  I have no clue what page is causing this.  I don't have any variables named in adminuser in my code.  Is there a possible memory leak or a loop that is occuring under the hood?
