JSP 2.0 and JSTL question

Hi,
I'd just like to ask if anyone could suggest a good site with tutorias about JSP 2.0 and more specific about requesting and manipulating attributes.
It is easy to do so by using servlets withn something like:
ArrayList mylist = (ArrayList)request.getAttribute("mylist");
and use it with an iterator.
...but I'd like to learn how I can request and manipulate ArrayLists in JSP using JSTL.
thanks in advance,
mike

All you should need are the <%@ taglib %> and the jar files in your web-inf/lib directory.
Nothing is required in web.xml for it to work.
Make sure you are using the JSTL 1.1 taglib URIs though: http://java.sun.com/jsp/jstl/core.
They look a lot like the old ones, but include /jsp now as well.
Does the EL evaluate inside a tag? eg <c:out value="${application.servletContextName}"/>
Couple of things to try
EL evaluation may be disabled: Put this at the top of your page:
<%@ page isELIgnored=false %>
Check your web.xml for something like this (disables EL in pages)
<jsp-property-group>
<url-pattern>*.jsp</url-pattern>
<el-ignored>true</el-ignored>
</jsp-property-group>
What version of the DTD are you using for web.xml? According to the JSP spec, if it is less than 2.3, and you haven't specified handling of the EL, it is ignored.
Relevant bits of the JSP2.0 spec: JSP3.3.2, JSP 1.10.1
Can you post some code which isn't working?
Cheers,
evnafets

  • J2EE, JSTL and JSF questions

    I am trying to learn J2EE/JSTL/JSF and have quite a few general questions. Any help on any of these is appreciated.
    1) Is there a way, just by using J2EE/Java to "manipulate" an XML file. Not just parse and read it's data but actually add nodes to the file?
    2) I've been reading quite a bit on JSTL and JSF recently. Is JSF supposed to be an alternative to Struts and JSTL an alternative to scriptlet coding?
    3) I am also working on creating a message board but throwing around a couple of ways to implement it. Either (a) using a database to store posts and a JSP interface or (b) using an XML document to store postings. Which of these two seem best or is there a better option?
    4) Is there an easy way to call Php from a Java program? I need to invoke a php program when a user clicks on a link on a JSP page I have.

    1) The SDK provides JAXP (Java API for XML Processing) in javax.xml package.
    2) I wouldn't call it 'alternative'.
    3) Your choice. I'd to use a RDBMS. Less overhead, better suited, (much) more functions and better performance.
    4) If that program is available on the web, then just invoke a HTTP request. If not, I'd rather to rewrite it to Java.

  • JSF vs. JSP and IDE Question

    I'd like to get an opinion from the forum, I'm looking to build a web application that provides a front-end to a back-end, batch Java app. The back-end app has pre-existing common classes and methods with all of the essential business logic.
    My first question is, what platform should I be looking at, Javaserver Faces or JSP? JSF is so new and all of the bugs surely haven't been worked out, but it is the heir apparent new direction of J2EE. JSP is a little more proven, but a little more difficult to work in. This "more difficult" might not be so bad for us, because we've developed most of our back-end app without an IDE or drag-and-drop tools.
    My second question regards IDE's. I'm relatively new to OO programming, and I've never used an IDE. So, of the many free IDE's out there (Eclipse, Netbeans, etc.), are there any that you would recommend for your answer to the first question? How large of a process improvement would you judge from a move to an IDE with drag-and-drog functionality?
    So, in short, I would appreciate any of your opinions on moving to a new JSF standard as well as your thoughts on IDE's.
    Thanks.

    If you don't want to sepnd much time and want to do something in the middle between JSF and JSP, you can use JSTL. Lots of cool JSTL components are available for free. Using struts (which is timetested) is also a good idea.
    If you have never used any Java IDE, I would suggest you to use netbeans ide. Netbeans is really cool ide and has some good features like refactoring, jsp debugging etc. You will have to use Tomact as your server if you want to use JSP debugging effectively.
    Eclipse with right plugin (My Eclipse) would be the best choice but you will have to understand some eclipse concepts before jumping on eclipse. It took me little time to figure out view, perpectives, plugins jargon.
    Also My Eclipse is not free but it's very inexpensive - $30 per year.
    All these are my experiances. I hope it helps you.

                                                             </c:otherwise>
                                                        </c:choose>Because I am not able to use JSP 2.0 and therefore must use JSTL 1.0

  • API for jsp and jstl

    can any body send URL or help me to download JSP and JSTL API also servlets

    hi,
    Jsp api
    http://tomcat.apache.org/tomcat-5.0-doc/jspapi/index.htmlJstl api
    http://java.sun.com/products/jsp/jstl/1.1/docs/api/index.html

  • That JSTL question...

    ...but I think I already did what I see what is always suggested in the searches I've performed.
    I get this error when I try to load my simple page testform.jsp
    org.apache.jasper.JasperException: The absolute uri: http://java.sun.com/jsp/jstl/core cannot be resolved in either web.xml or the jar files deployed with this application
    Here's the complete contents of testform.jsp:
    <%@ taglib prefix="c" uri="http://java.sun.com/jsp/jstl/core" %>
    <html><head></head><body>
    ${param.argle == "bargle"}
    <form name="form1" method="post" action="testform.jsp">
         <input type="hidden" name="argle" value="bargle" />
         <input type="submit" name="submit" value="submit" />
    </form></body>
    it should be noted that if I remove the taglib directive the page works fine (the EL returns false before clicking the form button, and returns true if you have clicked the button).
    The directory structure:
    [tomcat's webapps directory]\playground
    ---testform.jsp
    ---\WEB-INF
    ------\lib
    ---------jstl.jar
    ---------standard.jar
    In other words, the jstl and standard jar files are in the WEB-INF\lib directory like I understand they should be. I've looked at the tld files inside the jar. They are using http://java.sun.com/jsp/jstl/core as the uri
    I have tried this exact scenario using both Tomcat 7 and Tomcat 5.5.
    so, the question is,... what am I doing wrong?
    Edited by: 861734 on May 26, 2011 9:28 AM

    I haven't made a web.xml. I was under the belief that to use the core taglib you didn't need it. Am I mistaken?

  • Patch for 9iAS and JSTL?

    The following message was posted in the OC4J Forum. Our latest thoughts for fixing the problem revolve around hopes of upgrading the OC4J component in 9.0.2.0.1 in Enterprise Edition (Solaris) to 9.0.3. Is this possible?

    NullPointerException using JSTL
    I currently have OAS Enterprise Edition 9.0.2.0.1 on Solaris installed. I have a web application which utilizes Tiles and JSTL. When I run my application through JDeveloper 9.0.3, both Tiles and JSTL tags work. However, when I deploy to Oracle Enterprise Manager and try to run my application, Tiles tags work but JSTL tags do not. Instead, I get the following error:

    After doing some research into this issue, I haven't found a solution, but I get the feeling this is a bug that has been patched or will be patched soon. Is there a patch out, and if so, where is it?
    ------- Follow-on Question about upgrading OC4J in 9.0.2.0.1 ---------
    Upon further investigation we found bug 2698206 that seems to be the relevant bug. The bug has been fixed in 9.0.3. It is my understanding that the only certified version of Enterprise Edition is 9.0.2.0.1.
    1) Is there a newer version of Enterprise Edition (9.0.3 or 9.0.4)?
    2) If not, can we upgrade the OC4J in 9.0.2.0.1 to 9.0.3? (our sysadmins need this somewhat certified, otherwise we can't upgrade our production servers).
    3) Any other ideas?
    Thanks

  • How to create two level dynamic list using JSP , Java Script and Oracle

    I am new in JSP. And i am facing problem in creating two level dynamic list using JSP ,Java Script where the listdata will come from Oracle 10g express edition database. Is there any easy way in JSP that is available on in ASP.NET.
    Plz response with details.

    1) Learn JDBC API [http://java.sun.com/docs/books/tutorial/jdbc/index.html].
    2) Create DAO class which contains JDBC code and do all SQL queries and returns or takes ID's or DTO objects.
    3) Learn Servlet API [http://java.sun.com/javaee/5/docs/tutorial/doc/].
    4) Create Servlet class which calls the DAO class, gets the list of DTO's as result, puts it as a request attribute and forwards the request to a JSP page.
    5) Learn JSP and JSTL [http://java.sun.com/javaee/5/docs/tutorial/doc/]. Also learn HTML if you even don't know it.
    6) Create JSP page which uses the JSTL c:forEach tag to access the list of DTO's and iterate over it and prints a HTML list out.
    You don't need Javascript for this.

  • JSP 2.1 and JSF 1.2 support?

    hi
    when can we expect to see JSP 2.1 and JSF 1.2 support in JDeveloper?
    br. aspa

    Good question Neila!
    Shay, thanks for the input.
    We urgently need these informations in order to design our strategies for future projects architecturing. For exemple, we are working on new Java projects at my company and are relying on JDev + ADF Faces + EJB 3.0 + OAS 10.1.3, based on the current Oracle implementation. I'm affraid I will have to rewrite code after you release new versions of those. If yes, I'll be personally in a big trouble... :-)

    but the app server fails on building the page saying :
    According to the TLD, the attribute test is not a deferred-value or deferred-method, but the specified value contains a #-expression
    Now as far as i now, JSTL 1.2 should be included in J5EE, which is in glassfish already, correct?
    and JSTL 1.2 supports using deferred expressions, correct?
    So why for the love of my sanity is this not working?
    aaaaaa.
    Thanks
    D

    I haven't actually used/tried this myself, and I am not a JSF expert, this error looks similar to the error message attribute xxx does not support runtime expressions.
    I think you are reading the error message wrong.
    You have supplied a deferred expression. No question of that.
    I think the error is saying that the 'test' attribute of the <c:when> tag does not support deferred evaluation. - ie you cant use #{expr} with the <c:when> tag.
    According to the JSTL1.2 spec, it seems that "deferred expressions" are only supported by the looping tags (<c:forEach> and <c:forTokens>) and the <c:set> tag.
    I think the JSF equivalent would be the rendered attribute. Can you use the rendered attribute with the webuijsf:tablecolumn tag? Or another JSF container type tag?

  • JSP 2.0 and EL

    I want to use JSP 2.0 and EL with tomcat 5
    When i use EL into a JSP Page, it seems like tomcat does not care about it and so does not interpret the EL expressions ( in the opposite, it displays the expressions )
    Is there sometihng to do to force tomcat to interpret such expressions ?
    Another thing. Is there something to add in the web.xml file to use JSTL 1.1 under tomcat 5? i seem to see that only <%@ taglib ...%> was required. Is it true ?
    thanks

    <jsp-property-group>
    <url-pattern>*.jsp</url-pattern>
    <el-ignored>true</el-ignored>
    </jsp-property-group>
    Cheers,
    evnafets

  • Eclipse and JBoss question ?

    hi,
    i know that it's not the place for this kinfd of question, i tried the JBoss forum, unfortynateley it's not very active, so....
    I have just installed a development environnement (Eclipse + Eclipse JBoss-IDE plugin, + JBoss 4.0 application server). everything is ok, i succeed creating a simple J2EE application (servlet + ejb session), but i have question about the following process
    generating file for the ejb session using xdoclet
    packaging the war file
    packaging  the jar file
    packaging the J2EE ear file
    deploying the applicationsuppose the folowing situation =>
    *I create a new EJB : so i have to generate the file (locale, home), repackaging the jar file and finally redeploy the ear file. is it the step i have to do ?
    *I want to modify an already deployed EJB, after code mofication, so i have to regenerate the file (locale, home), repackaging the jar file and finally redeploy the ear file. is it the step i have to do ?
    *And same question about jsp and servlet, have i to regeneare the war file and redeploy it ?
    and what about "hot deploying in JBoss".
    Thanks for your help

  • Cannot get EL with JSP 2.0 and Tomcat 5 to work.

    I cannot seem to get the EL to work with Tomcat 5 to work. When I use <c:out value="${expr}"/>, I simply get printed out the content of the double quotes as though it is a string. I don't know if EL has to be enabled with JSP 2.0 and I cannot find any documentation on enabling EL with JSP 2.0. Please help.

    Check out [url http://forum.java.sun.com/thread.jspa?threadID=629437&tstart=0] this thread , reply #6.
    It covers the basics issues that people encounter installing JSTL.
    I cannot find any documentation on enabling EL with JSP 2.0I guess you haven't looked hard enough.Try the JSP2.0 specification section 3.3.2: Deactivating EL Evaluation

  • JHeadstart and JSTL - From the AMIS JHeadstart Cookbook

    Using JSTL in JHeadstart Applications - The Java Standard Tag Library (JSTL) provides a set of libraries of standard “custom tags” for inclusion in JSP-pages. They are standardized and an integral part of JSP 2.0 and the J2EE 1.3 specification, but can already be used with JSP 1.1 in J2EE 1.2 application servers such as Tomcat 4 and OC4J 9.0.3. Before too long, application servers will all provide support for the JSTL tags, without even having to include the associated libraries with the application. Besides, JSTL tags are more flexible and versatile as well as richer than the comparable Struts tags. It seems like a fine idea to embrace JSTL as soon as possible.
    You can find a description on how to include JSTL in your JHeadstart applications at: http://www.amis.nl/technology/Cookbook/Recipe%20for%20JSTL.htm.
    The Dutch Oracle partner AMIS has a 10-person JHeadstart team, currently involved in 4 JHeadstart-projects in The Netherlands. Their experiences and ideas are compiled in the AMIS JHeadstart Cookbook that is published on the internetsite (http://www.amis.nl) for other JHeadstart developers to share.
    I hope the recipes are of use to you.
    best regards,
    Lucas Jellems

    As a result of reorganizing (and re-providing) our website, some of the URLs stopped working. I apologize for any inconvencience.
    The JHeadstart Cookbook can now be found at: http://www.amis.nl/files/technology/Cookbook/AMISJHeadstartCookbook.htm and the Recipe on using JSTL is located http://www.amis.nl/files/technology/Cookbook/RecipeforJSTL.htm.
    Note that support for JSTL has been included in the JHeadstart 9.0.5.1 Release (so you do not need this recipe if you are using that release); basically, the JHeadstart team applied the recipe to the core JHeadstart set!
    Also note that the AMIS Demo Application (AMIS Library System) created along with our Cookbook is now shipped as part of JHeadstart 9.0.5.1 to demonstrate the use of Oracle Toplink. This will make it easier for you all to apply our recipes - since you have the ALS application already available when using JHeadstart 9.0.5.1.
    best regards,
    Lucas Jellema, AMIS JHeadstart team
