Just out of interest...

Hi everyone
I was curious about the platform the British Journal of Photography uses, so I thought I would post this.
This is not about, moaning about DPS, as I much prefer the navigation of DPS to this platform, anyone recognise it?
One thing that I do like about this though, is the press and hold to bring up the nav bars, I think that would be my biggest wish at the moment
or at least that tapping a web view did not bring up the nav bars.
Anyway just thought I post this.
P.S dont want this thread to be the start of any moaning, if it does, I'll delete it :-)

It's mag+ if I recall correctly

  • Construction (just out of interest)

    After puzzling over this for some time I have concluded that construction must occur sort of in this order:
    memory allocated
    super called
    variables initialised
    constructor body called.
    however after seeing some results I am rather confused. From the following code sample (without arguing whether the code is 'correct') the results have confused me:
    abstract class A {
       C c = new C();
        public A() {
           configure();
           System.out.println("A.A()");
        public abstract void configure();
    public class B extends A {
       String myVar = "INIT";
       public B() {
         super();
         System.out.println("B.B()");
       public void configure() {
        System.out.println("B.configure()");
          myVar = "FOO";
    public static void main(String[] args){
         B b = new B();
         System.out.println("myVar: " + b.myVar);
    class C{
    C(){
      System.out.println("C.C()");
    }printing out
    C.C()
    B.configure()
    A.A()
    B.B()
    myVar: INITso we can assume that when the constructor of B is first entered myVar is already set to "INIT", configure then sets it to "FOO", but when the super constructor exits myVar is reset to "INIT" which seems to suggest that the variable is initialised twice.. giving us an order of:
    memory allocated
    variables initialised
    super called
    variables initialised
    constructor body called.
    Is this correct? And is there a reason for it being done like this? couldn't the JVM just get away with doing?
    memory allocated
    variables initialised
    super called
    constructor body called.
    these results have been observed in 1.4.1_02, is this likely to be different in different JVM's?
    Thanks for your time

    This is what happens:
    Whenever a new class instance is created, memory space is allocated for it with room for all the instance variables declared in the class type and all the instance variables declared in each superclass of the class type, including all the instance variables that may be hidden. If there is not sufficient space available to allocate memory for the object, then creation of the class instance completes abruptly with an OutOfMemoryError. Otherwise, all the instance variables in the new object, including those declared in superclasses, are initialized to their default values.
    Just before a reference to the newly created object is returned as the result, the indicated constructor is processed to initialize the new object using the following procedure:
    # Assign the arguments for the constructor to newly created parameter variables for this constructor invocation.
    # If this constructor begins with an explicit constructor invocation of another constructor in the same class (using this), then evaluate the arguments and process that constructor invocation recursively using these same five steps. If that constructor invocation completes abruptly, then this procedure completes abruptly for the same reason. Otherwise, continue with step 5.
    # If this constructor does not begin with an explicit constructor invocation of another constructor in the same class (using this) and is in a class other than Object, then this constructor will begin with an explicit or implicit invocation of a superclass constructor (using super). Evaluate the arguments and process that superclass constructor invocation recursively using these same five steps. If that constructor invocation completes abruptly, then this procedure completes abruptly for the same reason. Otherwise, continue with step 4.
    # Execute the instance variable initializers for this class, assigning their values to the corresponding instance variables, in the left-to-right order in which they appear textually in the source code for the class. If execution of any of these initializers results in an exception, then no further initializers are processed and this procedure completes abruptly with that same exception. Otherwise, continue with step 5. (In some early implementations, the compiler incorrectly omitted the code to initialize a field if the field initializer expression was a constant expression whose value was equal to the default initialization value for its type. This was a bug.)
    # Execute the rest of the body of this constructor. If that execution completes abruptly, then this procedure completes abruptly for the same reason. Otherwise, this procedure completes normally.

    Hi i am just plainly asking out of interest, when u format your player does it take the firmware off it's like so u cant use the player or does it just take the information of your player (mp3s and stuff like pictures or whatever?).

    When you format it only gets rid of data and music, not the firmware. The Reload OS option gets rid of the firmware

  • Just out of curiosity....

    So just out of curiosity, I was wondering if it was possible to increase the screen resolution on a 20" screen beyond 1680 x 1050. Anyone know?

    No, that would not be possible, because the maximum resolution on an LCD screen is constrained by the fixed size of the pixels. You can't make the pixels smaller.

  • My iPod classic accidentally went through the washer. I put it in rice and now it will turn on but it just shows a red X. Am I just out of luck?

    My iPod classic accidentally went through the washer. I put it in rice for about two weeks. It will now turn on but only shows me a red X. I plugged it into the wall but I am afraid to plug it into my computer. I don't know if that will have an adverse affects on my computer. Am I just out of luck on this one or is there any way this is salvageable?

    Rice is a weak drying agent. You can buy stronger desiccant's that will do a better job of drying out the iPod. But please use caution, these desiccant's can be poisonous, so use caution.
    Considering the very high value of an iPod classic I would make every attempt to repair it.  One example is shown below, but there are many types available.

    Use iTunes on your computer.  With the iPad connected, sign into your Apple account and check for updates.
    Doing this should straighten out the problem.

  • Just out-of-box Q2613x won't work in HPLJ 1300

    I've had a Q2613X sitting in the box for a while (got a good deal from a business that was getting rid of excess cartridges). It was still sealed in the black plastic bag. Recently my in-use Q2613A ran out of toner, and I put in the 13X. The orange light blinks with the 13X. If I put the 13A back in, the light goes green, but there's no toner, so... Is there anything I can do to get the 13X to function? I've tried unplugging and rebooting (holding Go button while powering up) the printer, but the end result is the same. When I turn the 1300 back on, the motor spins, the lights go through their rotation, but end up on flashing orange, and it doesn't work. (And just to repeat, putting the old 13A in gets me back to green light status, so I don't think this is a printer issue.)
    Is there something perhaps going on with the chip on the 13X cartridge? What can I try to get my use out of this "new" toner cartridge?
    Thanks.

  • Hi, are other people still experiencing chipped scuffed iphone 5 brand new just out of box?

    Im an old apple user who likes keeping all his devices up to date. I ordered and iPhone 5 white and unfortunately it was chipped from 3 different places right out of the box. Now come my replacement white iphone 5 which is supposed to be fine. It has barely been a few hours i took it out of the box and there is a small chip on the screen. Note: chips on the first phone were on the aluminium frame where the screen seem is. Im writing this review just disappointed in my trust for the company thinking i will let it slide and keep using my chipped phone till a better android phone comes in and this one breaks properly. Any other people having this issue? I know getting two defective devices is beyond bad luck. I have pictures of the damages along with the imei if anybody wants to see?

    This is not a site for reviews, there are dozens of such sites out there... if you want to right a review (you have not do so yet), go there and write one.

    Does it matter?  Will that make your issue go away or make you feel better?
    Take the device to an Apple store and exchange it or contact Apple Customer support to arrnage an exchange.
