Just wanna do a for loop

Just wanna do a for loop by using a method. The error I'm getting is
java:6: missing return statement
public int for1(){
^
1 error
import java.util.*;
public class forloop{
     public int for1(){
          for(int i = 1; i <= 100; i++){
               System.out.println(i);
               return i;
     public static void main(String args[]){
          forloop a = new forloop();
          a.for1();

Oh i see the problem was i didn't declare i in the
class before i used it in the method definition. I
thought the way i declared it in the for loop would
work, oh well.no-no. the problem was, that you returned something only inside for loop, but compiler was not sure that thing from the for loop would be returned, so it was bitching about that...
if you had written your for statement like that:
for (int i=0; i < -1; i++) {
return i;
then body of return statement would not had been executede, therefore nothing would have got returned, and that's the case about what this compiletime error was telling you...

  • Why won't for loop execute?

    Can anyone tell me why this for loop won't execute in "Security System".  Basically I was practicing for the  CLD exam by writing the "Security System" practice exam.  I wanted to try the Event-Driven State Machine with a queue.  My problem is that in the "Check Alarm", "Check Bypass", and "Check Tamper" states, I have a for loop which is indexed with 4 - 6 element arrays.  The for loop will not execute 6 times.  It won't even execute once.  It just skips over the for loop and outputs all boolean falses and zeros for the numeric values.  Is this a Labview glitch of some sort?
    Thanks for any replies.

    Without looking at the code, my guess would be that one of the indexing inputs into the loop is 0.
    More precisely ".. is an array of size zero.
    (1) Go to yout three boolean arrays and click on the 6th element to make the arrays size=6 with all FALSE. now make current values default and save the VI.
    (2) You also need to wire the boolean arrays across all event cases  to ensure the current values are kept in the shift register. RIght now a change in one array resets the others to an empty array again.
    (3) now initialize a boolean array containing six FALSE and initialize the shift registers with it.

  • Enhance for loop question

    I like it, but I can't figure out how to use it for the following situation (printing contents of two arrays using one iterator):
    old way:
            System.out.println(menuTitle + "/n");
            for (int e ; e < length.menuChoices ; e++)
                System.out.print(menuChoices[e] + " - " + menuLabels[e]);
            }new?
            System.out.println(menuTitle + "/n");
            for (String e : menuChoices)
                System.out.print(e + " - " + menuLabels[????]);
            }Is there a nice way to do this or should I just use the old for loop and hope my teacher doesn't think that I just don't know about the new loop? Thanks.

    Is there a nice way to do this or should I just use
    the old for loop and hope my teacher doesn't think
    that I just don't know about the new loop?No there isn't. In the new for-loop the loop counter has been abstracted away. You'll have to either use the old for-loop, or introduce a counter in the new.
    Another way could be to change the design a little.
    class MenueItem {
       Type1 choice();
       Type2 label();
    for (String e : menuItems)  { // all MenuItems
       System.out.print(e.choise() + " - " + e.label());
    }

    OPEN p_result_cur FOR WITH wr AS ...There's no loop in the fragment you posted: the OPEN statement does just that; it opens the cursor so later FETCH statements (perhaps inside a loop) can get data.
    "WITH sub_query AS ( .... ) SELECT ..." is one way of writing a query.

  • Passing a variable's associated number between "for" loops & functions?

    Hi,
    I seem to be having a problem understanding how variable information can be passed between functions and arrays.
    I have variable "grab" set up as a Number.
    var grab:Number;
    My intent (I'll do my best to explain) is to have a number "attached" to grab when it is first mentioned in this function, itemClick.
    These should be all the relevant arrays:
    clickItemArray = [scene_Camp.wood, scene_Ax.ax]
    itemUsableArray = [wood2, ax2]
    sceneGuyArray = [scene_Camp.guy_Camp, scene_Ax.guy_Ax]
    function itemClick(event:MouseEvent) {
                    for (grab = 0; grab<clickItemArray.length; grab++) {
                            if(clickItemArray[grab].hitTestPoint(mouseX, mouseY, true)) {
                                    addEventListener(Event.ENTER_FRAME, itemRemoval);
                                    sceneGuyArray[grab].gotoAndPlay("guy_Notice");
                                    trace("guy_Notice");
    I would like to have the number established with grab (it would either be a 0 or 1, as clickItemArray,  sceneGuyArray, and itemUsableArray) be able to be passed into the next relevant function, itemRemoval. I was hoping to use variables so I could use the same function for whatever item was clicked upon. For example, if the clickItemArray item was 1 (the ax), then sceneGuyArray[grab] would = 1, and the right frame would play. That number 1 would be transferred to function itemRemoval, where it would constantly be listening for sceneGuyArray[1] also (where "1" would have been established through the initial "grab" in the first function), and react accordingly.
    function itemRemoval(event:Event) {
                    for (var grab2:uint = grab; grab2<sceneGuyArray.length; grab2++) {
                        if (sceneGuyArray[grab2].currentLabel == "guy_NoticeDone") {
                            //removeEventListener(Event.ENTER_FRAME, itemRemoval);
                            trace("cheese");
    I can't get the trace working, though. I'm sure I'm doing something wrong with "for" loops or the if statement.
    Naturally, help would be appreciated.

    I do have an unrelated question, if you happen to see this...
    Is there a way to "nest" for loops? (maybe there's a better term)
    For example, this is part of a function I have
    } else if (canClickBoo == false) {
                            //for the click array
                            for (var u:uint=0; u<clickToXArray.length; u++) {
                                //disable the mouse
                                clickToXArray[u].mouseEnabled = false;
                                clickToXArray[u].buttonMode = false;
                            for (var l:uint=0; l<clickFromXArray.length; l++) {
                                clickFromXArray[l].mouseEnabled = false;
                                clickFromXArray[l].buttonMode = false;
                            for (var o:uint=0; o<clickItemArray.length; o++) {
                                //enable items to be clicked
                                clickItemArray[o].mouseEnabled = false;
                                clickItemArray[o].buttonMode = false;
    Obviously each "for" loop does the same thing, set the items of each array "false" (make them unclickable if "canClickBoo" is false). In case each array has a different length, though, I can't just use a single "for" loop (afaik).
    I'm wondering if, based on what you see (naturally I can post more), I can simplify the code.

  • For loop- seems to be just going to last value

    Hi guys, carrying on from the thread I created yesterday I have managed to get the socket working between my server and my client, but I am having an issue when re-constructing a string that is being sent from the client to the server. I am talking about the for loop in line 151, which seems to just going straight to the last value of the for loop and thus the board isn't being reconstructed properly.
    I'm including both the server and client code which just needs to compiled (host is set to localhost on port 4500) and you will see what I mean after inputting a move from the client. Can anyone spot the problem?

    1) I don't think that even compiles. Since you're catching IOException, your throws clause is bogus--that method can never throw IOE.I have removed the try and catch statements in the main method. I cannot, however get rid of the throws IOException in the main method other my program won't compile.Right. Don't catch it, since you're not handling it. Just declare that it throws it.
    Indeed, this is what I have done :)

    3) Don't name methods the same as your class name.See answer to 4.
    4) Start method names with lowercase letters.
    try
    serverSocket=new ServerSocket(portNo);
    catch (IOException ex)
    System.err.println("Could not create socket on port" +portNo);
    System.exit(1);
    ServerSocket is a part of the java.net package. I am just creating an instance of it. http://java.sun.com/j2se/1.4.2/docs/api/java/net/ServerSocket.html
    I don't know what you're talking about. You had a class named Server and a method named Server. That's confusing.Changed- I didn't spot it, so I have named it startServer now.

    5) There's almost no point to ever calling System.exit. Here, again, since you're not
    actually handling the exception, don't bother catcing it.Sorry, but this was how I was taught when I started java. My understanding is that System.exit properly terminated applications so this freed up memory so it's abit of a habit of mine, is this wrong to do in this instance?Calling it in response to an exception is wrong. It's not that method's job to decide to shut down the VM. Just let the exception bubble up (or else handle it properly). You do not need to call System.exit to free up memory. It's freed up automatically when the VM exits. The OS takes care of that, without any help from you.Removed- thanks for clearing that up for me :)

    line 151 of the server code or client code?Line 151 of my server code. My client is working fine up to this step of the programming I have done- it's just the server part I'm having issues with. You can compile and run the client fine- you can compile the server but as explained in the original post, I'm having a logical error when redrawing the board when it gets the 68 charecter string from the client (first 64 charecters are for the board, then the original position (x and y respectively), followed up the new position (x and y respectively again).
    I'm including an updated version of the code, after all the comments above so we have an updated version for trying to solve the problem I'm having. The client code does not need to be updated as it has not changed yet, so you can use the code in the original post.

    I don't know who 'Mrs Gideon' is, but we are fellow users here on these forums, you're not talking to iTunes Support nor Apple.
    If you have previously contacted support then you can use the same method that you used last time, and, if you have a case number, include that as well

    Try a reset:
    Hold the Sleep and Home button down until you see the Apple logo.

    i just purchased monthly plan for creative cloud.  I understood the plan included photoshop.  But no idea how to open photoshop app.  just keep looping into screens which instruct me to purchase creative cloud.  hugely frustrating.   on hold forever with customer service.

    First check to see your plan is active: Adobe ID
    Try launching Photoshop choosing Trial instead of a purchase.
    Mac             /Applications/Photoshop CC/Photoshop CC.app
    Windows  C:\Program files\Adobe\Adobe Photoshop CC\Photoshop CC.exe
    Then once inside, go to Help > Sign in...  There, use the email address and password for your account and it should activate.
    If that does not work, could you tell me what version of PS you have and what os version you are using?

    Please don't shout.
    Has the unit EVER been jailbroke?  Has it EVER been dropped?  Did it EVER get excessively wet?  Did you EVER load a pirated developer's version of the IOS?
    If "No" to all the above, first try a system reset.  It cures many ills and it's quick, easy and harmless...
    Hold down the on/off switch and the Home button simultaneously until you see the Apple logo.  Ignore the "Slide to power off" text if it appears.  You will not lose any apps, data, music, movies, settings, etc.
    If the Reset doesn't work, try a Restore.  Note that it's nowhere near as quick as a Reset.  It could take well over an hour!  Connect via cable to the computer that you use for sync.  From iTunes, select the iPad/iPod and then select the Summary tab.  Follow the on-screen directions for Restore and be sure to say "yes" to the backup.  You will be warned that all data (apps, music, movies, etc.) will be erased but, as the Restore finishes, you will be asked if you wish the contents of the backup to be copied to the iPad/iPod.  Again, say "yes."
    At the end of the basic Restore, you will be asked if you wish to sync the iPad/iPod.  As before, say "yes."  Note that that sync selection will disappear and the Restore will end if you do not respond within a reasonable time.  If that happens, only the apps that are part of the IOS will appear on your device.  Corrective action is simple -  choose manual "Sync" from the bottom right of iTunes.
    If you're unable to do the Restore and you have IOS-6 or lower, go into Recovery Mode per the instructions here.  Also, if you have IOS-7, read this.

  • How can I make a Java program pyramid using for loops??

    Hi guys, so I'm stuck with my program here... I don't know how to make it work, and i've been trying really hard.. So now i give up and need some guidance.. Please help me here.
    Your job in this assignment is to write programs to solve each of these six problems.
    1. Write a GraphicsProgram subclass that draws a pyramid consisting of bricks
    arranged in horizontal rows, so that the number of bricks in each row decreases by
    one as you move up the pyramid, as shown in the following sample run:
    The pyramid should be centered at the bottom of the window and should use
    constants for the following parameters:
    BRICK_WIDTH The width of each brick (30 pixels)
    BRICK_HEIGHT The height of each brick (12 pixels)
    BRICKS_IN_BASE The number of bricks in the base (14)
    The numbers in parentheses show the values for this diagram, but you must be able
    to change those values in your program.
    * File: Pyramid.java
    * Name:
    * Section Leader:
    * This file is the starter file for the Pyramid problem.
    * It includes definitions of the constants that match the
    * sample run in the assignment, but you should make sure
    * that changing these values causes the generated display
    * to change accordingly.
    import acm.graphics.*;
    import acm.program.*;
    import java.awt.*;
    public class Pyramid extends GraphicsProgram {
    /** Width of each brick in pixels */
         private static final int BRICK_WIDTH = 30;
    /** Width of each brick in pixels */
         private static final int BRICK_HEIGHT = 12;
    /** Number of bricks in the base of the pyramid */
         private static final int BRICKS_IN_BASE = 14;
         public void run() {
    }That's my problem.

    yo, so i figure out my for loop. my code is very very very very ugly, so dont laugh i know its ugly! just wanna ask for some tips

         }So yeah, it's very ugly. not general. BUT now; I know the logic of the program..
    I need to change 3 variables here.
    the Y var, the X variable, and the size of the loop test..
    so I need to make a one compact for loop that will change those 3 for every time the loop finish, or for every row the variable will change...
    Ill try to think again, ill head to the balcony, and squeeze my brain. YEAH it took me this long to figure this out, anyway im a noob YET. But i was working a while ago.
    ANYWAY, leave some tips please.. I NEED TIPS NOT SOLUTION
