Just what is a high transactional database

silly question I know, but what is the definition of high transaction database? how many transactions per second constitutes a high, medium and low transactional database?

  • What are considerations for Highly Transactional Database

    Hi,
    Can anyone please tell me about considerations for highly transactional database? Is Oracle 10g RAC better or Oracle DB with dataguard?
    Thanks.
    Regards,
    RJiv.

    I'm still not understanding what your question is... Load characteristics are quite irrelevant when discussing the necessity of DataGuard, though the amount of redo generated obviously impacts how much bandwidth is required between the primary and standby site. Bare transaction numbers are somewhat irrelevant when discussing the necessity or advisability of RAC since the amount of work a "transaction" does depends wildly on the application, the number of "transactions" a server can handle depends wildly on the hardware, and the business's need for scalability/ load balancing/ surviving node failure are independent of the transaction load.

  • High 'transaction rollback' (statistic# = 172) investigation

    Hi,
    I'm trying to investigate what could cause high transaction rollback .
    First think was ora-0001 unique constraint violation but I can't see any err=1:
    grep err=1 ora_1544382.trc
    in trace file .
    Do You have any idea what else can cause hight transaction rollback problem in JDBC connections (maybe somekind of timeouts) ?
    There is no clue in 10046 trace with lvl 12 maybe other trace ?
    Connections are made throught connection pool from Websphere Application Server dont know if thats relevant.
    Maybe some JDBC properties interfere, can't see thing in trace files.
    Database is 9.2.0.8

    What did you do to record the appearance of the "transaction rollbacks". Was this taking a snapshot of the session's statistics as the trace file was generated ?
    Essentially any transaction that rolls back and clears the undo segment header will report as a "transaction rollback" - including some internal transactions.
    Example 1) Inserting a row into a "child" table when the "parent" doesn't exist will error with ORA-02291 (parent not found). If this was the first DML of a transaction the resulting rollback will show as a "transaction rollback".
    Example 2) An index leaf block split picks an unsuitable block off the freelist and starts an internal transaction; when Oracle realises it was an unsuitable block the transaction rolls back.
    One quick cross-check for Dom Brooks' idea: if this is the front end code deliberately starting a transaction and rolling it back, then "user rollbacks" will be similar to "transaction rollbacks". If it's not user driven then you may have more transaction rollbacks than user rollbacks. Unfortunately, if the front-end issues a rollback after every query (i.e. without starting a transaction) then these rollbacks will show as user rollbacks but not transaction rollbacks and confuse the issue.
    Having checked your trace for error 00001, you might as well check just for "ERR".

  • Difference between Transaction database and relational database

    Whats the Difference between Transaction database and relational database ??

    'Transaction' refers to the usage of a database.  'Relational' refers to the way in which a given database stores data.
    A 'transaction database' (or operational database) could be relational, hierarchical, et al.  A transaction database supports business process flows and is typically an online, real-time system.  The way in which that data is stored is typically
    based on the application(s).  Companies often have multiple 'transaction databases'.
    An 'operational data store' (ODS) is an integrated view or compilation of transaction data.
    The you get into data warehouse databases, where the transaction data is optimized for querying, reporting, and analysis activities.

  • Very high transaction log file growth

    Hello
    Running Exchange 2010 sp2 in a two node DAG configuration.  Just recently i have noticed a very high transaction log file growth for one database. The transaction logs are growing so quickly that i have had to turn on circular logging in order to prevent
    the log lun from filling up and causing the database to dismount. I have tried several things to try find out what is causing this issue. At first i thought this could be happening because of virus, an Active Sync user, a users outlook client, or our salesforce
    integration, howerver when i used exmon, i could not see any unusual high user activity, also when i looked at the itemcount for all mailboxes in the particular database that is experiencing the high transaction log file growth, i could not see any mailboxes
    with unusual high item count, below is the command i ran to determine this, i ran this command sever times. I also looked at the message tracking log files, and again could see no indication of a message loop or unusual high message traffic for a
    particlar day. I also followed this guide hopping that it would allow me to see inside the transaction log files, but it didnt produce anything that would help me understand the cause of this issue. When i ran the below tool againts the transaction log files,
    i saw DDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDD, or OOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO, or HHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH.
    I am starting to run out of ideas on how to figure out what is causing the log file build up. Any help is greatly appreciated.

    If you have users with iPhones or Smart Phones using ActiveSync then one of the quickest ways to see if this is the issue is to have users shot those phones off to see if the problem is resolved.  If it is one or more iPhones then perhaps look at
    what IOS they are on and get them to update to the latest version or adjust the ActiveSync connection timeout.  NOTE: There was an issue where iPhones caused runaway transactions logs and I believe it was resolved with IOS 4.0.1
    There was also a problem with the MS CRM client awhile back so if you are using that check out this link.

    I would also deploy some tracking methods to see if you can hone in on the culprits, i.e. If you want to see if the problem is coming from an internal Device/Machine you can use one of the following

  • Questions on OBIEE reporting against transactional Database

    Hello guys
    I have a situation where I have to bring in 5 tables from transactional database to do reporting on.. I looked at the tables, there are not typically dimension or fact tables. Each table contains information very specifically, at the same time all tables have numeric values that needed to be aggregated at the lowest level of that table..
    I can join all these 5 tables together knowing the key columns. However, this is basically joining 5 tables with fact measures... Since this is transactional database which we don't own, so I can't create views nor changing the table structures..
    I wonder how would I be able to configure such model in OBIEE?
    Any thoughts?

    Thank you for the reply..
    The specific situation I have here is:
    I have 4 tables that I am polling directly from the4 store's cash register (Oh yea, real real time), they are customer, receipt line, receipt header, inventory,
    The physical join is: they are customer-----> receipt line<-----receipt header <------------inventory...
    In the BMM layer, each of these 4 tables have columns that should be measures, such as customer.customer credit limit, receipt line. quantity, receipt header. reciept tendered, inventory.quantity on hand... They are more measure columns from each table, but I am just listing one from each..
    In this case if i set the aggregation rule on each column, then the BMM model won't a star schema anymore because every table can be fact..
    I thought about adding all the measure columns into 1 logical fact table, which then the logical fact will have 4 LTS: customer, Re Line, Re Header, Inv.. This will be fine if I am only dealing with 1 store... However, in reality there will be 50 stores with the same exact tables/structures but on different servesr. Therefore, the logical fact will end up with 4*50 = 200 LTS each has fragmentation defined "store number = NYC or something else"..
    Just wondering if combining all the measures in one logical table is the only way to model this design or not? What would be the best thing to do if in this situation I have to report against multiple data source of the same tables in 1 subject area?
    Please let me know your thoughts..
    Thank you

  • What is your favorite transaction and why?

    Just wondering what your secret tools are... Willing to share? Transactions you use all the time, and without them you would be, uh, toast...
    My favorite one is SE84 Repository Information System. I use it regularly to find objects in repository, like database tables, views, table fields, function groups, function modules, programs, logical databases, message classes, message number, SET/GET parameters, transactions, variants, screens, business add-ins, customer exits, change requests and authorizations.
    A useful hint: You can also search by application hierarcy. For example, in 4.6c to find customer exits within MM, do as follows:
    1. Start SE81
    2. Select subtree MM with F9
    3. Click Information system. SE84 is displayed.
    4. Click Envir. and then Exit techniques and then Customer exits. Click enhancements. A search screen is displayed and development class field is pre-filled.
    5. Press F8
    What is your favorite transaction and why?
    Regards,
    Jarmo Tuominen

    clearly SE80.
    Starting 4.7 you have a button on top of the tree navigation where you can click the information system.
    So you have (at least) three transactions in one: SE80, se84(85 and SE38.
    I wonder why still some people prefer SE38. It's just SE80 minus functionality and overview plus wasted screen space.
    Is there any existing function you can execute from SE38 that is not available in SE38? A lot the other way round.
    regards,
    Clemens

  • Merging two highly dependent Databases

    Hi
    I want to merge our company's two highly dependent databases.

    2: Advantages and disadvantages of merging databases.
    3: Also pls send me the site links for the same.

    I shall ask the same question of Satish, what does it mean by dependant? If there are two dataabases, you just can't "merge' them. Merge is a more better term to be used for two different tables residing in two databases. If there are two databases, you can merge the tablespaces of one with the anotehr with the help of data pump/export and can push to one of the database. This also leads to the question which of the two dbs is going to be your source and which would be your target?
    What's the database version and o/s BTW?

  • [Solved] if(Transaction specified for a non-transactional database) then

    I am getting started with BDBXML 2.4.14 transactions and XQuery update functionality and I am having some difficulty with 'node insert ...' and transactions failing with 'Transaction specified for a non-transactional database'
    Thanks for helping out.
    Setup:
    I have coded up a singleton manager for the XmlManger with a ThreadLocal holding the transaction and a query method to execute XQueries. The setup goes like this:
    environmentConfig = new EnvironmentConfig();
    environmentConfig.setRunRecovery(true);               environmentConfig.setTransactional(true);               environmentConfig.setAllowCreate(true);               environmentConfig.setRunRecovery(true);               environmentConfig.setInitializeCache(true);                environmentConfig.setTxnMaxActive(0);               environmentConfig.setInitializeLocking(true);               environmentConfig.setInitializeLogging(true);               environmentConfig.setErrorStream(System.err);
    environmentConfig.setLockDetectMode(LockDetectMode.MINWRITE);               environmentConfig.setJoinEnvironment(true);               environmentConfig.setThreaded(true);
    xmlManagerConfig = new XmlManagerConfig();               xmlManagerConfig.setAdoptEnvironment(true);               xmlManagerConfig.setAllowAutoOpen(true);               xmlManagerConfig.setAllowExternalAccess(true);
    xmlContainerConfig = new XmlContainerConfig();               xmlContainerConfig.setAllowValidation(false);               xmlContainerConfig.setIndexNodes(true);               xmlContainerConfig.setNodeContainer(true);
    // initialize
    instance.xmlManager = new XmlManager(instance.getEnvironment(),                    instance.getXmlManagerConfig());
    instance.xmlContainer = instance.xmlManager.openContainer(                              containerName, instance.getXmlContainerConfig());
    private ThreadLocal<XmlTransaction> transaction = new ThreadLocal<XmlTransaction>();
    public XmlTransaction getTransaction() throws Exception {
              if (transaction.get() == null) {
                   XmlTransaction t = xmlManager.createTransaction();
                   log.info("Transaction created, id: " + t.getTransaction().getId());
                   transaction.set(t);
              } else if (log.isDebugEnabled()) {
                   log.debug("Reusing transaction, id: "
                             + transaction.get().getTransaction().getId());
              return transaction.get();
         private XmlQueryContext createQueryContext(String docName) throws Exception {
              XmlQueryContext context = xmlManager.createQueryContext(
                        XmlQueryContext.LiveValues, XmlQueryContext.Lazy);
              List<NamespacePrefix> namespacePrefixs = documentPrefixes.get(docName);
              // declare ddi namespaces
              for (NamespacePrefix namespacePrefix : namespacePrefixs) {

              XmlQueryContext xmlQueryContext = getQueryContext(docName);
              try {
                   xmlQueryExpression = xmlManager.prepare(getTransaction(), query,
                             xmlQueryContext);
                   log.info(query.toString());
              } catch (Exception e) {

    </Project>
    <Project id="2nd-project" agency="test.org"/>
    </Test>
    Problem:
    All the queries are run through the xQuery method and I do delete the XmlResults afterwards. How do I get around the 'Transaction specified for a non-transactional database' what is the transactions doing? How do I get state information out of a transaction? What am I doing wrong here?
    1 First I insert a node:
    Transaction created, id: -2147483647
    Adding document: large-doc.xml to xml container
    Reusing transaction, id: -2147483647
    Working doc: ddieditor.xml
    Root element: Test
    Reusing transaction, id: -2147483647
    insert nodes <Project id="JUnitTest" agency="test.org"></Project> into doc("dbxml:/ddieditor.dbxml/ddieditor.xml")/Test
    Reusing transaction, id: -2147483647
    2 Then do a query:
    Reusing transaction, id: -2147483647
    doc("dbxml:/ddieditor.dbxml/ddieditor.xml")/Test/Project/@id
    Reusing transaction, id: -2147483647
    3 The same query again:
    Reusing transaction, id: -2147483647
    doc("dbxml:/ddieditor.dbxml/ddieditor.xml")/Test/Project/@id
    Reusing transaction, id: -2147483647
    4 Delete a node:
    Reusing transaction, id: -2147483647
    delete node for $x in doc("dbxml:/ddieditor.dbxml/ddieditor.xml")/Test/Project where $x/@id = '2nd-project' return $x
    Reusing transaction, id: -2147483647
    5 Then an error on query:
    Reusing transaction, id: -2147483647
    doc("dbxml:/ddieditor.dbxml/ddieditor.xml")/Test/Project/@id
    Reusing transaction, id: -2147483647

    Ok got it solved by increasing the locks lockers and mutex's I allso increased the the log buffer size:
    environmentConfig = new EnvironmentConfig();
                   // general environment
                   environmentConfig.setAllowCreate(true);
                   environmentConfig.setRunRecovery(true); // light recovery on startup
                   //environmentConfig.setRunFatalRecovery(true); // heavy recovery on startup
                   environmentConfig.setJoinEnvironment(true); // reuse of environment: ok
                   environmentConfig.setThreaded(true);
                   // log subsystem
                   environmentConfig.setInitializeLogging(true);
                   environmentConfig.setLogAutoRemove(true);
                   environmentConfig.setLogBufferSize(128 * 1024); // default 32KB
                   environmentConfig.setInitializeCache(true); // shared memory region
                   environmentConfig.setCacheSize(2500 * 1024 * 1024); // 250MB cache
                   // transaction
                   environmentConfig.setTransactional(true);
                   environmentConfig.setTxnMaxActive(0); // live forever, no timeout
                   // locking subsystem
                   environmentConfig.setInitializeLocking(true);
    environmentConfig.setMutexIncrement(22);
    environmentConfig.setMaxMutexes(200000);
    environmentConfig.setMaxLockers(200000);
    environmentConfig.setMaxLockObjects(200000); // default 1000
    environmentConfig.setMaxLocks(200000);
    // deadlock detection
                   environmentConfig.setLockDetectMode(LockDetectMode.MINWRITE);
    In the docs by Oracle it is limited information given regarding the impact of these settings and their options. Can you guys point in a direction where I can find some written answers or it hands on?

    If one talks about class 1 and class 2 and so on in information technology, I immediately think IP address classes... But then I have a wee bit of networking background that explains that. ;-)

  • What happen during shutdown oracle database

    Dear All,
    i have a questions and i enclosed some suggestions for the answer because I'm confused about the answers :
    What happens during shutdown oracle database :
    and the suggested answer :
    1- When shutdown the database with NORMAL or IMMEDIATE option : the database system writes check point before shutting down the database .
    2- when you shutdown the database with the IMMEDIATE , option , open transaction are rolled back before the database is shutdown .
    3- shutting down the database with abort always requires an instance recovery at the next startup .
    please suggest the right answer .
    Regards

    Hi Anwar,
    When you close a database, Oracle writes all database data and recovery data in the SGA to the datafiles and redo log files, respectively. Next, Oracle closes all online datafiles and redo log files.
    When you terminate the instance of an open database/use abort command to close and completely shut down the database the writing of all data in the buffers of the SGA to the datafiles and redo log files is skipped. The subsequent reopening of the database requires recovery, which Oracle performs automatically.
    I hope this will help you out to understand the process.

    The client uses a Corba object in SvrApp. SvrApp uses the DB and a Tuxedo queue.
    The client uses the TransactionCurrent object in the ISL to start and finish the transaction. SvrApp uses TMS_ORA to handle the DB part of the transaction, and TMQUEUE uses TMS_QM to handle the queue part of the transaction. What coordinates the overall transaction?
    Thanks...

    Hi Todd,
    we have been able to collect system call information with tusc. It appears that at times the client process is spinning on a semop() call. We only have a few samples, and they show 0, for or 6 semop() calls just before the commit.
    Here is an excerpt from the tusc log:

    If you have Pages you can create customs pages for your book as TD suggested. If you have Pages from iWork 09 or 11 this app will add 80 or so additional frames to those offered:  Frames and Strokes Installer. Don't use it on the latest Pages version, however.
    This tutorial shows how to create a custom page with the theme's background: iP11 - Creating a Custom Page, with the Theme's Background for an iPhoto Book.  Once the page is complete to get it into iPhoto as a jpeg file follow these steps:
    Here's how to get any file into iPhoto as a jpeg file:
    1 - open the file in any application that will open it.
    2 - type Command+P to start the print process.
    3  - click on the PDF button and select "Save PDF to iPhoto".
    NOTE:  If you don't have any of those options go to Toad's Cellar and download these two files:
    Save PDF to iPhoto 200 DPI.workflow.zip
    Save PDF to iPhoto 300 DPI.workflow.zip
    Unzip the files and place in the HD/Library/PDF Services folder and reboot.
    4 - select either of the files above (300 dip is used for photos to be included in a book that will be ordered).
    5 - in the window that comes up enter an album name or select an existing album and hit the Continue button.
    That will create a 200 or 300 dpi jpeg file of the item being printed and import it into iPhoto. For books to be printed choose 300 dpi.
