K8n IDE Detect Trouble

Just got my K8N in the mail today, and I'm having problems getting it started. When I have a HD plugged in, it gets to the Detecting IDE Drives... and hangs. With only a CDROM plugged in, it boots fine. One time I was able to get it to start up (it took quite a while), and even began installing windows (managed to partition the disc and everything) but then halfway through install, it froze and hasn't worked again since.

I have a K7N2delta and and I have the same problem. I have a HD connected to the primary Ide channel as master, a DVD-Rom connected to the Secondary channel as master and a CD-Rom to as slave to the Secondary Channel too. If I unplug the DVD-rom, the PC will boot as normal, if I connect it, it will stay at Detecting IDE Drives. I tried connecting the DVD-Rom alone and it still wouldn't boot. The Bios won't auto-detect it either. Both jumpers on the drives are set correctly. .
IF I change the jumper on the DVD-rom to CS or slave, it will boot OK, but it won't see my DVD-rom AND the light on the drive stays ON rather than blink. Also I cannot open the tray of the DVD-rom although I tried different molex connectors to no avail.
Any Ideas.?
My DVD-Rom is an MSI 8216

ive got a msi:k7n2g that ive had 4 over a yr and just got around 2 installin.the sys will post but will not detect the ide mastors or slaves, ive changed the cables and the cd-rom and hd are both set as masters.ive read the posts in here bout sata, native and pata but i cant find those options in my bios in my msi:k7n2g.
could somebody post, email or pm me the step by step "i know im weak" but i would really appreciate it but if thats not the case could somebody tell me where 2 go??? its gotta be a bois issue i would think?!?!

Make sure drive is jumpered correctly.
    Disconnect the CDROM.
Connect the HD to IDE1 making sure that the red stripped wire is on pin 1 on both the mobo and drive.  Make sure the drive has a power connector attached.
Boot, and listen for your HD spinning up.
Make sure you have IDE detection in the BIOS set to Auto.
Check for HD status during POST.
Once you've got it up and going then install the CDROM on IDE2.

  • For people having POST problems (long IDE detection) on Cold Boot with K8N Neo 2

It's been 2 weeks that I'm looking for the root of this particular problem.
I've found today how to get rid of it. Try this if you haven't already :
In BIOS root screen, activate the hidden settings (Press SHIFT+F2 and ALT+F3 rapidly)
Then go to the Cell Menu and disable NV/ATI Speedup feature.
Save your settings, turn off your comp.
Restart and check with cold boots
    Sweep

I have a worse variation of this problem (but also the startup IDE freezing that fixes with Alt-Ctl-Del), that I discovered while trying to boot from an ME CD or from a WinME Floppy boot disc when and only when I tell it to load support for CD-Rom going into DOS.  It freezes when it gets just past detecting the IDE, requiring a cold boot reset.
If I boot off the WinME CD or a floppy boot disk, and don't choose CD-ROM support I can get to the A: drive with RAM C drive to be able to flash the BIOS (which I did up to 1.3, after which I reset the CMOS jumper).  The problem persists with the new MOBO 1.3 BIOS.
I made sure the IDE-2 ribbon was connected properly, and even tried changing the jumper from master to cable select on the Plextor DVD burner....still locks up when I boot to DOS with CD Rom support enabled.
My next step was to disconnect the IDE cable from the Plextor so the drive was not the issue, and it still freezes if I choose CD Support from Boot disk.
I next removed the CMOS battery (which btw, will require you to call MS to reactivate XP), checked the voltage with a battery tester, replaced it, cleared CMOS jumper again, use mostly default BIOS settings except disabled SATA, and the same damn problem.
My friend, Triple6 in this same thread has the identical setup except different RAM, different nVidia 6800 Ultra Video card  and he does not have the same bootup  issue.  We checked the same BIOS settings.
I'm beginning to wonder if I have a bad MOBO that won't allow me to boot off a floppy with CD-ROM enabled.  Very Strange!

  • Help! no IDE detection

Ok, i was installing a hardcano fan controller, and upon trying to boot to afterwards, i got a boot error. i tried reinstalling winxp from a CD and it said it couldn't format the drive due to it being damaged. i assumed it was just the hard disk had fried itself, since the CD rom still worked. however, after getting a SATA drive (Which is detected), my CD from drive no longer boots!! the option to boot from CD isnt even in the bios. it DOES detect something on IDE0 but it won't recognize it as a CD rom drive. i've tried 4 different CD roms. could it be that i fried the board?
why would the CD rom drive work earlier and not now?

ok... so it wasn't really a huge deal after all. i had already checked all my bios settings and all that... what was concerning me was that my CD rom worked the night before but not now... and then i realized.. both HDDs (which i thought i'd fried) where connected to IDE cable A, whereas my CDrom was on IDE cable B. when i was not getting CD-ROM detection it was because it was on IDE cable A, which i have now determined is faulty! yay!
so my HDDs probably still work, and i just need to return the cable.

  • K8N Neo2 Platinum troubles.

This will be my first post here, and I hate it to be a problem post.  Anyway, I built my own computer about 2 months ago, and I seem to have a problem with 2D applications.  Here is my setup before I show you what I mean.
    Mobo MSI K8N Neo2 Platinum
    CPU Athlon 64 3000+ S939
    PSU Antec 350W
GPU PNY Geforce 6800GT 256MB AGP
    200GB Maxtor SATA HD
    Sony DVD-RW
1 GB Mushkin PC3200 DDR Ram
    OS Windows XP Pro
Ok, here is my exact problem.  I seem to have trouble playing most MPEG, AVI, and WMV video types.  I say most, because some will work ok.  I have a picture of my problem here:http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v281/ZeroX585/hmm.jpg
There seem to be lines that appear across my video, and some 2D games such as Doom, Zsnes, and Worms world party.  They also seem to appear when certain colors are shown during playback of videos and games, (mostly the darks and blacks.)  3D games work FINE, (Half Life 2, Doom 3, Far Cry are perfect).  No errors what so ever.  I have also noticed that this happens also when the program is dependent on some DirectX resources.  I have uninstalled and reinstalled DX9 about 3 times, I have my latest Graphics drivers, I have my latest Windows Updates, I have the latest Mobo chipset drivers and such as well.  I have also installed Windows XP again.  I am not certain that this is a complete motherboard issue, as I do not have parts to switch out, but I am lost as to what I can do next.  I HAVE replaced the GPU with an older ATI Radeon 9000, and it still happens.  I highly doubt that the problem would lie within the CPU, but it's probable.   I have reseated all the parts in the computer, and checked over my motherboard to make sure there isn't any damage to it.  I am lost as to what I can do next though.
There is one thing I have noticed though, is if I go into my Display Properties and take the Hardware Acceleration tab down to "Disable all Direct 3D and Direct Draw Accelerations", the 2D programs work FINE.  But if it goes even one notch up, it goes back to the lines.  Anyone know what this could be related to??  Thank you for your help.

Before I had my 6800 GT, I was using the Radeon 9000, and I did use Driver Cleaner 3 to remove the Radeon driver.  I also used Driver Cleaner when I update the Nvidia drivers, and I've done this a few times as well.  I've tried using the Nvidia direct drivers (Current version), and I am currently using the PNY version of the Nvidia drivers, all the while using Driver cleaner to remove the old drivers before installing the new ones.  I have not tried any games or videos in safe mode though, I think I will do that.  I will get a screen shot of Doom if I can.   By the way, I am not certain what you mean by "Be sure to run the Nvidia option, not the Nforce option."

  • BIOS hang on IDE detection

For some reason, I am having random BIOS hangs SPECIFICALLY when the BIOS is scanning the 4th IDE Channel (sometimes as it scans to detect the Fourth IDE Master, sometimes when scanning for Fourth IDE Slave).  Once it begins the auto scan of this 4th channel, it just hangs there and freezes.  Also, I don't know why I'm not getting access to some other hard drive specs on the 4th channel, specifically these categories:  LBA Mode, Block Mode Fast Programmed I/O modes, 32 Bit Transfer Mode.  I'm at a loss at trying to figure this out.  Could someone please provide me with any insight into why this may be occuring??  I have posted below detailed specs on my Motherboard settings.  Thanks for your help, this is really baffling me because it appears to be random...

    SOLVED...SO FAR THANKS TO BEJON2000!
First off, thank you to ALL who offered your kind support and help.  I appreciate you taking your time to assist me.
bejon2000 - you were my saving grace!!!
Absolutely unbelievable to me, but thanks to you for sharing your experience with the 3-pin fan problem.  Based on that post, I again decided to dig into my power connections and cabling.  I admit, I thought your comment sounded like a long shot, but was so desperate and frustrated.  Guess what, I am ecstatic that I tried your suggestion.
After disconnecting the 3-pin fan off the same power connector also feeding my secondary hard drive, and reconnecting it to a different power cable with less load - here is my result.  I have experienced NOT A SINGLE HANG-UP now in 3 days.  I will continue to monitor this, but so far I think all is well.
My last thought:  THANK YOU again for sharing your experiences all.  I could not have done it without your insight, and I am grateful for forums such as these.  Bejon2000, you especially helped me out tremendously, thank you, thank you, thank you!!!

  • MSI K8N PLATINIUM SLI - TROUBLE POSTING?

    To start with my spec's
AMD 3500 S939 'Venice' Stock Cooler
    MSI K8N PLAT SLI
    BIOS V 3
    PSU ANTEC Truepower 2.0 550W (has 2 X 18amp 12V rails)
    1gb (2x512mb) OCZ PC 4000 VX GOLD
    HDD SEAGATE 200GB SATA
    Leadtek 6800GT PCI Express
    WIN XP Pro SP2 (OEM)
    Pioneer DVD Writer
    Audigy 2 ZX
All brand new and no overclocking undertaken.
My problem is that my system is a nightmare to get to boot/post. After I first built it last week it booted up fine the first time. Seemed stable as I ran through the Doom 3 demo and Thief 3 to give the system a bit of stress. It worked fine for hours CPU was fine, temp about 33-36 degrees at the time. Shutdown and went to bed.
The next day went out to boot up and this is where the problems started to occur.
I hit the power button the case fans spin, cpu coooler fan starts spinning, blue LED on motherboard comes on, the DLED's hang at chipset initiallization. Eventually after hitting the power up button on the case and resetting about ten times the system finally boots up, runs for hours like a dream, will reboot with no problems.
Next day cold boot same problem.
I pulled everything apart, pulled out the cmos Batt etc... Left over night.
I put it together outside the case on insulated material with 1 DIMM of RAM, HDD, Graphics Card. Same problem it eventually booted. Then it reboots fine first go while adding more and more hardware.
This is the problem once it does boot up I can reboot non stop as often as I like with no problems. If I switch off over night, when I go to cold boot in the morning it is a nightmare to get going. Is this something endemic to this board or is it a problem my particular motherboard. To me this inidcates that all the components work and that it is a motherboard problem.
I just want to know as it is only a week old and I can RMA for a new board if I do it in the next few days.
    Thanks.

i'm starting to  think that the problem could be related to the Graphics Card or PCI express slot. I did a second strip down of the system and noticed that when I removed the graphics card it hung on the DLED 'initalize floppy controller" and did not hang on the  'early chipset initialzation' . From BIOS changed the system setup to not to seek for A:floppy, then when I reboot (cold left overnight) without the graphics card it goes through to fully boot, can hear the HD booting up and get 4 green DLED's.(no output without a screen connected of course)  The only trouble is that it virtually won't boot with my Leadtek 6800gt Graphics card at all now, it is taking 20 to 30 goes on a cold boot. However when it does it has been running for hours ok. I notice also that when I updated to the latest Nvidia Drivers, Thief 3 would start crashing in certain sections and rebooting the machine.   Could this be the problem isolated stuffed Card or PCI express slot.

  • K8N NEO Platinum Trouble (stripe)

Hello, i have trouble with my stripe set. I got K8N NEO Platinum and want to install Win64. I got 2 samsung discs and i want to make a stripe set. I have set the stripe butt when windows installs he see's 2 disc instead of 1. I think i have used the right raid drivers. Does anybody can help me...

There are no RAID drivers for Win64 as of yet(for nvidia RAID), that is why you'r Windows64 bit is seeing 2 harddisks.
Also post in the AMD64 nvidia forum in the future, it might provide you with the answers faster

  • K8N SLI-F trouble

Everything works(video card, cpu, ram, HD, dvd drive), but my trouble is that the HD and the dvd drive, when i try to boot up the computer it turns on, but it wont boot. I have just built this computer, so it is my initial boot.  The video card fan spins, and the light on the wireless card lights up, and the cpu fan spins.  The drives have power to the and the IDE cable is connected right, but they dont spin.  Now when you unconnect the IDE cable, they will spin.  I have the motherboard sitting on a cardboard box(which i booted it on that to make sure it wasnt grounding out on the case) as of now.  There are no obvious black marks(from a short) on the board that I can see.(I've looked over the board VERY well)  So do I just have a bad board?  Thanks.
EDIT: I really need some info on this fast b/c I need to know if I need to run to a pc store or not to buy a new motherboard, b/c I want my comp done tonight.

Yes can used usb drive but you need to set boot priority to USB as 1st in the BIOS then you can installed the windows.

  • K7T turbo2 v.5 IDE detection

    Greetings,
I just got a K7T turbo2 to replace my K7T pro2a, which did not die but I figured I was living on borrowed time. Anyway when I was setting up my new board yesterday the first time I tried to start it up it would not initialize the primary IDE. Not knowing what else to do I switched cables. This seems to have fixed it and thus far I have not had any other problems. What I am wondering is this; is this a normal thing for this board? I just recently found this forum and in doing a search I found a couple of message discussing this issue. Have I made a poor choice in boards? In my initial research this seemed to be the best Kt133a out there but I am wondering at the moment. Are there other issues that I should watch for and will this IDE situation happen again? Thanks for reading and for any help you might offer. BTW this is only the second system that I have put together.

More than likely a bad cable, damaged during the mobo swap.  They're more delicate than they look/feel.  The Turbo-2 is a very nice board, no vices to speak of.

  • K8N Neo Platinum = TROUBLE

I'm having one hell of a time here with this board. I have just about reached the end of my rope with it. First off I am trying to use a Raid array (0) with a pair of raptors. The floppy that was sent with the Mobo will not work correctly......ok..so I made one according to the manual from the CD. It appears to function. However when windows tries to boot for the first time I blue screen. Various Errors. I have tried 3 different sets of ram. All of which worked in my KV8 Max 3, a board know to be picky about ram.
Is this a bios issue? I have seen a few otheres with similar problems.
K8N Neo Plat - Kingston Hyper X dimm slots 1 and 2, Antec True 550 PS, Lite On CR-RW - ATI AIW 9800 Pro........

No overclocking was done during the install. I tried 3 sets of Ram all at different timmings. Kingston HyperX 3200, Mushkin Level 2 black PC3500, Geil Golden Dragon PC3200. I tried it in different dimm slots,.......timmings. I tried 2 sets of SATA drives. One set of WD Raptors and one set of Seagate SATA drives.
The floppy disk they sent for the SATA drivers was no good. I created a new one off of the cd. That did not help.
I am almost certain it is the SATA controller gone bad.
Initially after re-creating the SATA floppie from the CD I was able to run windows and was to the point of loading my various apps. It was after a windows update that I rebooted and got an error from nvraid svc....etc....it went down hill from there. The board is out of the case and repackaged for the vendor. I hope they turn it around quickly.
Not a noobie here. I've built many pc's and never had this kind of problem unless it was a defective board.

  • Sata and ide drive troubles

I tried searching on this, but didn't find what I was looking for.  If my sata drive is plugged in on it's own, everything boots fine, but when I hook up my ide drive, windows won't boot.  It goes through the Nvidia boot utility and tells me it can't find a boot disk.  Even if I go through and manually select the sata drive as the boot drive, it still doesn't work.  I've tried the ide drive on my primary channel with a cdrw on the secondary, and vice versa.  I know it will work, because it worked previously.  Had to format and reinstall and now it's a no go.  I've tried the sata on channels 1 and 3 with nothing different

I must say I had similar problem.   While swapping IDE cables back and forth among different hdrives, the computer would not boot, would not even recognize the WD or Maxtor hard drive in any master/slave configuration.  In fact in the POST,  it would see my SATA Hitachi, but would refuse to boot from it.
The solution was a new replacement IDE cable.  I guess, after several dozens of swaps, if not careful, some of the tiny cable strands in the IDE cable will be damaged permanently as a result of pulling on them while trying to connect/disconnect them.   The evidence of a damaged IDE cable is not apparent.  This happened to the red MSI supplied cable that came with my mobo.
After struggling with this problem for a day, I did come up with the idea of just trying and replacing the cable, and voila - problem was solved, and puter booted up no problem.
    Hope that helps.

  • K8N Neo2 Plat - Trouble with Adaptec 19160 SCSI

Hi, Using BIOS 1.9 and installed an Adaptec 19160 a few days ago to mainly control a tape drive.
When the machine is going through POST, there is a message that comes up just after the Nvidia RAID prompt to the effect that the machine is unable to load the option ROM, presumably because it's clashing with the NVRAID BIOS (if I disable NVRAID in the BIOS, I am able to see the Adaptec option ROM prompt to press <ctrl><A> to go into the card diags).
Anyone else seen this problem and managed to get over it? Time was when you could change an Adaptec cards mem address and IRQ from the onboard diags, but you don't seem able to do that anymore.
The card still works, but if I want to use SCSI disks, I'm afraid it probably won't.

    Problem is :
Bios can't invoke a addin card with nvraid enabled (aka' the invoke error string with the addin cards vendor ID).
What kind of card it is doesn't seem to matter with bioses above 1.9x .
I have SIL 3112 SATA addincard , same thing ...

It then take alot of time to open XP to desktop. BIOS is set at Optimized selection. What am I missing?? Bad Board? Bad Builder (me)???

Think that line is not showing progress of scandisk, but ending time to make a selection of entering setup or select a bootable device...

  • K8n neo2 POST problem during cold startup

    Hello everybody,
Sorry for posting this again but i just don't understand it.
    The facts:
Every once in a while - sometimes daily and sometimes every 2nd or 3rd day - when I power on my computer the bios hangs at its very first stage with all d-leds red.
This is according to the d-bracket : 'system power on, bios will hang here if processor is damaged on not installed properly'.
But after ~ 30 seconds the boot process continues (it apparently doesn't start again but continues) displaying the following error message after IDE detection: 'warning. system now in safe mode. please reset all overclocking features.'
After that everything is FINE, the bios settings are as always (failsafe with sata enabled) and the computer has no other problems. It runs all applications without trouble, memtest86 and prime95 don't give me errors and I won't get bsod's.
This entire issue happens only when the computer was turned off for a prolonged period, i.e. it has to be off for more than 6-8 hours.
    I just don't understand it  .
I see that here are a couple of guys with quite a huge knowlege of this machines and so i hope that someone has a clue to what this issue can be caused by and perhaps how it could be solved ?
    Thanx,

This is the email I sent to MSI UK:
    Hi
I believe I have a faulty motherboard as the BIOS only posts after I switch the power on at least 3 - 6 times from a cold boot.
The error message I keep getting is 'warning system now in safe mode, please reset overclocking features in bios or press F1 to continue' although I have not altered any overclocking features or overclocked anything.  One thing I have noticed is that the processor is running at 2210 Mhz (used MSI Core Centre) instead of 2200 MHz as standard even though it is displays 200 MHz in the BIOS, could this be possibly something to do with it?
Please could you suggest what process I need to do to RMA the board or how I could diagnose the problem.
