Kde / gnome widgets?

Hello guys,
I recently started using arch linux and tested out both, gnome and kde. So, I found out, I'd really prefer using gnome since it's fabulous, however I really miss these widgets things, now the deskop is just a picture and "useless".
So is there anything for gnome like the plasmoids for kde?
Sincerly

  • KDE / gnome hang while starting

    Hi,
well, KDE and Gnome hang while starting them, when I change back to console, I can read the following:
xset: bad font path element (#63), possible causes are:
Directory does not exist or has wrong permissions
        Directory missing fonts.dir
Incorrect font server address or syntax
I reinstalled xorg, kde, gnome, but again it simply hangs, xorg starts up normally, but when changing to kde or gnome it hangs
    xfce4, wmi, dr17 run well.
I didn change any config filel...
So any idea what could be wrong ?
    thanks

PS.: Is there a possiblility to let pacman reinstall ALL packages that are already installed ?

rebuild of kdebase didn't change anything. Running kbuildsycoca with new user from xfce first gives:

  • How to install kde/gnome desktop in arch linux?

I tried with installing pacman -S xorg-server and xorg-apps then
i have given installation for kde and gnome using  pacman -Sy kde kdm xorg-xinit dbus gnome gnome-extra.
But it is asking me to replace some softwares..
    At the end after downloading
while commit transaction it's showing some errors like
    /lib exists in filesystem
    /usr/bin/tzselect exists in filesystem
    /bin/kill
    /etc/pam.d/chfn exist in filesystem
    /usr/share/man/man1/...
So i tried with Syuf still getting error.
From wiki i have seen installing glibc
    using pacman -U http://pkgbuild.com/~allan/glibc-2.16.0 … pkg.tar.xz
    pacman -Syu --ignore glibc
    pacman -Su
    mkinitcpio -p linux
    pacman -Sd gcc gcc-libs
After some sort of commands i lost my script commands like poweroff, reboot....it's showing /sbin/init not exist...
Then when my computer starts it is not booting...
What all i want to do is getting an UI with dbus and xorg..
    Today i have started archlinux...
    Please help

    Is it a stable one?..
We are planning to switch everything from Ubuntu to ArchlInux
One more question..Is it mandatory to install xorg and dbus before installing any kde or gnome UI?
I have this doubt because when i install xorg-server and xorg-apps.(first pacman installation)..it's showing for pacman update i gave no..then it is saying like replacing some of the packages with another one?
This is a problem with my installation..or will it be fixed if i moved to latest one?
    Thanks in Advance

  • Kde oxygen widget usable again: thanks nvidia!

Many nvidia cards had an issue with pixmaps when using the default  oxgen widget theme which relies heavily on pixmaps. The desktop would almost come to a halt when lots of windows were opened. But the latest nvidia driver update (275.19) fixed this pixmap out of memory issue according to its changelog. So I gave it a try and voila! all the lags are just gone!!!!! and I can also see via the xrestop utility that the total pixmap memory consumption is also very low compared to previous drivers. So does it work for all of you nvidia owners or is it just me?

I tried installing it just now on 4.5.2 and it simply does not show up. Wrote a comment on kde-look.org...

  • Help with kde/gnome

hello everyone .. I have just install arch linux ( installed all packages on cd )
and now im stuck with runlevel4 .. I tried to startx but that brings me into a version ugly graphical desktop . I guess my real question is . How do I get KDE or Gnome running ?

    sysboy wrote:
hey scarecrow where and how can I get 3.4.2 on my system
    pacman im guess ???
Simply edit /etc/pacman.conf and uncomment the lines related to "testing".
After that, "telinit 3" (as root), login as root, and "pacman -Syu" (or maybe "pacman -Sy kde", as the previous command will also fetch you the new xorg version from testing, which seems being OK, but I'm not 100% sure....)
This should effortlessly upgrade you to 3.4.2 (after some time, of course!).
To avoid nasties, get sure that NO external kde apps are installed (else uninstall them BEFORE the upgrade and recompile them after the upgrade...), and for safety rename your old .kde user (hidden) directory to something else (in case that some useful data were stored there- else simply delete it before logging to KDE again).
The biggest worry with KDE 3.4.2 is that it also brings gcc 4.0.1 with it, which still has some quirks (maybe this is the sole reason it's still at "testing"), but IMO we all should get accustomed to it- sooner rather than later...

  • KDE/Gnome interference

Although the problem is there already a long time, only recently it really has started to bug me.
I run a KDE4 desktop environment, but I still heavily depend on GTK and Gnome applications.
I've also grown quite fond of the possibilities of the composite systems.
However there seem to be quite some glitches.
    Examples:
VLC toggles Fullscreen: Flashes of the Gnome wallpaper will appear.
After starting a gnome program, the kmix interface is replaced by the gnome volume images (when using the keys on my keyboard)
When plug in of a new USB-disk both the Gnome system and the KDE pop-ups will appear.
    All these things are accumulating
And I wonder whether there is a way to keep both systems separated?

  • KDE/GNOME menus

What is the usual/preferred method of getting icons in to GNOME and KDE menus? Is there a standard location? Are there any helper programs or will stuffing a .desktop file somewhere just work?

iphitus wrote:But this isnt reccomended when distributing .desktop files, as other users may well want to see those options in their menu.
Sure, I was simply under the impression we were speaking about a user's individual desktop environment and their desire to make user specific changes, not global or packaging alterations. When I make Slackpacks I never presume to speak for the user, and so after providing the desktop file (if needed) I let them decide whether or not to narrow its menu usage.

  • KDE & Gnome Intergration

Since am an ex-mac user i wondering if kde or gnome can do the following thing
1 Does kde address book intergrate with konquer am used to safari auto filling stuff from my address book
if this could also be done on gnome i like to know
    2. being an old aduim user am used to it being able to change there user name to the full name if there user name was in the address book anything capable of this thanx

I know 1 doesn't work, but it sounds like a nice feature which would be rather easy to write in KDE 4. Here's a feature request for it, as I think it makes sense.
    http://bugs.kde.org/show_bug.cgi?id=170676
2: This might work in KDE, at least konversation and kopete work with the adressbook in KDE 3. Not sure how far KDE 4 is in this regard, this is often the kind of things still not done (but easy to do, so it'll probably come soon).

  • KDM refuses to log me in - but KDE/GNOME works fine with startx

I just updated to the newest kernel and another ~150 packages and I have a little bug!
Basically KDM starts fine, (i use the innitab method) - I log in and then black screen and straight back to KDM.
Using startx and the appropriate entry in xinitrc I can boot gnome or kde fine.
Anyone have any Idea? I'm lost.

this kdm.log -> I moved the old log out of the way so this is fresh. I did an init 5, logged in with kdm, waited for it to black screen then restart and then copied the log over.
Note that your system uses syslog. All of kdm's internally generated messages
(i.e., not from libraries and external programs/scripts it uses) go to the
daemon.* syslog facility; check your syslog configuration to find out to which
file(s) it is logged. PAM logs messages related to authentication to authpriv.*.

  • KDE Desktop Widgets Screen Locker Crashes

    Hi,
I'm running KDE 4.11.2 on an Arch x86_64 box. I looked through the KDE bug reports, but I couldn't find a bug filed about this, and I'm confused about where to start looking.
If I use the 'Simple Locker' and lock my screen, everything works wonderfully and as expected. But if I switch to the 'Desktop Widgets' screen locker and lock my screen, everything goes to pieces. The lock screen doesn't show up, and my system freezes.
I'm still able to move my mouse, but everything else is unresponsive, and I can't click on anything. I opened a TTY login to kill the screenlocker, but it wasn't running.
The only thing that worked was rebooting it.
How do I start troubleshooting this?

    arojas wrote:
Kitchi wrote:Any idea if it will be fixed/dropped in next releases of KDE?
In KDE4: no, as there will be no more kde-workspace feature releases. For KDE5/Plasma2 (or whatever it will be called) it's all going to be rewritten anyway, so if it survives it will be in a very different form.
Does that include bug fixes? Apologies if that's a stupid question... I have no idea how the KDE releases work.
I guess that answers the question either way... I'm not marking the thread as solved since the issue still persists.
@Box0 - That's the bug... I did check the resolution mentioned, but it matches my screen resolution. So that can't be the problem. I'm thinking that it could be a permission conflict somehow, with the screen locker trying to access some files that have wrong permissions set.

  • Temperature threshold event (without kde/gnome)?

    Hi all,
with all those approaches around (powersave, pm-utils, hibernate-script, laptop-mode, cpufreqd, cpufrequtils and so on), I am now utterly confused. However, I suspect I have a somewhat sound setup. Because I had problems in the past with the CPU getting too hot, I have set it to its lowest frequency, powersave governor, almost everywhere I could. Now I'm getting a bit more courageous (and tired of the CPU being used only with some 40% of its power), and I am about to reboot with a few settings changed to ondemand. Now to make sure nothing bad happens, I would like to start passive cooling when a certain temperature threshold is reached, i.e. I want to revert to governor powersave based on that event. But how would I go about generating such an event? Probably something with hald?
    TIA,
    Andreas

    Solved! But how
udisks/udisks2 requires CONFIG_SWAP to be enabled in the kernel!
I can't imagine why this kernel option is required by udisks now. Personally I can't see any obvious reason, there is no sense.
I will try to contact the developers. Because I can't imagine why SWAP is required.

  • Dbus update broke kde, gnome, pulseaudio, others

Ever since updating to core/dbus from dbus-core, my desktop environments and various programs are broken. I have a variety of logs that people on IRC asked for. It's not impossible that some ancient etc file was updated wrong and it's my fault, but I don't know where to look or what to do.

I'm on IRC also, same username in #archlinux, feel free to message there for more details or I'll try to refresh this as I search around... Thanks for the help.

Okay, found the issue and reported it on AUR... a script called 'sixad-dbus-blocker' in the qtsixa package was breaking it. Disabling it fixed everything. Link to package in AUR just in case anyone else runs into this issue:

  • Non-Latin characters in Sylpheed's subject when in gnome/kde

So, this is curious and i'm not expecting an answer, but anyway i post it:
Sylpheed 0.9.5 [simple, not claws], works ok when opened in fluxbox or window maker; but when opened in gnome or kde, following curious behaviour shows:  in the "Subject" field, when I switch over to greek keyboard layout, it doesn't show greek characters but some not identified encoding, probably iso8859-2 or so.  This is mirrored everywhere where "Subject" field shows [ie in the headers on top of the message].  But then, if i type some greek characters in "Subject" field (which show weird there) and then copy-paste them in the message body (when composing a message), then they show allright as the greek characters i intended to type.  In the message body everything shows as it should be, ie greek, there's no problem there or when composing a message, only the subject (and only in kde & gnome).  Needless to say that this "subject" encoding behaviour also shows in message list, so most messages of mine cannot be identified via message list in sylpheed.
Every locale setting in Arch is correct, so please don't focus there. This doesn't happen in slackware 9.0 or 9.1 or in debian sid, so it's probably either a gnome/kde problem or a sylpheed problem.
I'm interested to know if there's someone else facing the same problem with sylpheed in arch [and probably with gtk+1.2 apps]. By this i don't neccessarily mean with greek but say with cyrillic or some other character set and encoding.
So, this is it.  Any clues?

The funny thing is that bold font [when message unread in message list] shows OK, ie in greek, but when i click on unread message, it is assumed to have been read, so it changes over to medium [non bold] and the encoding changes as well into the one that is not greek and thus unreadable.  In ~/.sylpheed/sylpheedrc the fonts are:
    widget_font=
    message_font=-microsoft-sylfaenarm-medium-r-normal-*-*-160-*-*-p-*-iso8859-7
    normal_font=-monotype-arial-medium-r-normal-*-12-*-*-*-*-*-iso8859-7
    bold_font=-monotype-arial-bold-r-normal-*-12-*-*-*-*-*-iso8859-7
    small_font=-monotype-arial-medium-r-normal-*-12-*-*-*-*-*-iso8859-7
In /etc/gtk, for gtk1.2 apps the file refering to greek encoding [el] seems to be fine [exactly the same as in slackware 9.1].

  • Two quick gnome and KDE questions

i dig gnome, wife and kids dig KDE we as a group only use one user account.
    so heres the deal...
when i make a change to the KDE desktop ( different icons, device, etc..) it effects gnome also. is there a way i can seperate their config files so that whatever i do to one does not effect the other ?
other question : i know that the Yahoo messenger thing has been fixed in the CVS version of Kopete. how can i make that happen ? can i find a PKGBUILD script for the cvs Kopete somewhere ? i think that it is just part of one of the KDE packages and i dont need to reinstall everything to get that going.
ok, any suggestions would be much appreciated..
    Arch Rocks !

-> is there some reason why you use only one user-account? i highly advice you to switch to a more-user way of using linux
the icons on the desktop cannot be separated easily (kde<->gnome), as both use ~/Desktop/.. structure (what became also standard and is also good being), so the best way would be to have more than one user
    kde? gnome? try xfce4 :-)
yahoo: kopete: hmm... earlier, kopete was a separate pkg (it was not part of the official kde-release), and it was very easy to rebuild only kopete on cvs --- now, things became a little more complicated: you need to rebuild kdenetwork (as far as i can remember), but as kde 3.3.beta1 (klassroom) is out, let's hope that some of the great users start a repository for it (some time ago someone from the comunity was running his/her own repository with the actual kde beta, but i was not able to find this thread - maybe deleted now)
you can also play around with ABS (see docs) and build your own kde 3.3beta1 pkgs and install them, but if you are a newbie, it would be a time-consuming, but learning experience

  • Arch + gnome|kde against other distros

Arch for me is a perfect distro in that sense, that I know exactly, where all configuration is stored, what every file means and where to dig in case of problems.
But this is true only if I don't use major DEs, such as gnome or kde.
So I want to ask the community, what advantages and disadvantages Arch has against other distros with gnome/kde/etc (not counting rolling-release)?
    TNX.
    edit:
As for me, Arch's main advantage - simple configuration through text files. I guess it is the same for many Arch users. But not for all.
Why people, who prefer to use kde/gnome use Arch?

I use ArchLinux with KDE4 because Arch gives me exactly what I want, no less, no more. KDE4 likes to be bloated and come with loads of useless crap, but not on Arch. Arch divides KDE into modules so I only get EXACTLY what i want. This makes my system fast, entirely customized, and yet it still looks good. Also if I want to remove KDE and install something else, it's extremely easy. Lastly, I love how standard Arch is. Packages are extremely standardized, none of this crap "flavoring"(as I like to call it) other distros employ, which cause more issues than they fix. Here everything is "standard linux". Everything conforms and makes sense, manual editing is simple. The AUR and PKGBUILD system is also absolutely fantastic, and probably my favorite part of the distro(along with tools like yaourt and the fact that most AUR packages also follow the Arch Packaging Standard)
