KDE sounds are much too loud

After doing a system update a few weeks ago, all of a sudden, no matter what the master volume currently is set to, KDE blares the notification noises at 100%. It is quite a bother. I have tried fiddling with the sound channel levels in alsamixer, but to no avail. After searching for the problem on the internet, I found one other person with the same problem, but I couldn't get his solution to work for me:
http://www.pclinuxos.com/forum/index.php?topic=104786.0
Namely, my PCM volume was already higher than the master volume.
Thank you for your time.

I solved using "/usr/bin/paplay" as a custom player for notifications (the playback options in the system notifications tab of KDE control center).
EDIT: never mind, that apparently didn't work...
EDIT 2: nope, it actually does work! Just had to restart KDE!

  • The browsers for my applications are much too big

A certain cat walked across the keyboard of my macbook pro and now the browsers for my applications are much too big.  I am unable to scroll all the way down.  i tried the standard "command +/-" but it isn't working.  Please help!   Here are two screenshots, the first in iMovie and the second in Word (i just installed the 2011 update but am unable to get past this screen because i can't scroll all the way to the bottom.)

no problem.  Also, if you go onto Displays in system preferences, you can select the box in the bottom left, which will then put a display icon in the top right so you can click it and quickly change the display resolution back if such a problem happens again without going into system preferences.

  • X6 wake-up alarm sound getting way too loud

    Hi.
First post here, and think last 'cause I haven't found any annoyances besides this.
Using X6 as an alarm clock for everyday wake up call.
The alarm sound just keeps getting too loud that it comes an annoyance in a few seconds (I tend to keep X6 next to me on a bedside table).
Have searched from the phone, but is it so that the Clock alarm "Ringing type" can not be changed as one can change the Incoming call ringing type in Profiles-section (possibilities are here: Ringing, Ascending, Ring once, Beep once, Silent)?
Seems so that those two mentioned aren't even connected to each other, so that if I set Incoming call ringing type as Ringing, still to no avail, because this doesn't affect Clock alarm in any ways (and Clock alarms in Ascending-type).
    Any advice on this?
(And could someone tell me, why this has been designed as is now?)
    Cheers

wow people normally complain its to low
the volume for an alarm tone is standard it cant be altered the only thing possible is to select another tone thats not high pitched
you can change the alarm tone by going to clock icon then open this and go to settings here you can change the tone
If  i have helped at all a click on the white star below would be nice thanks.

  • Prints are much too dark

I have just received prints of several landscapes that looked great on screen. Prints are real disappointment as much too dark, although still really sharp and colours OK. Views are all JPEGs from iPhoto 5, converted using iPhoto from Canon RAW - have just transferred a couple to a PC and the PC image is much like the print - too dark. Have tried adjusting brightness on PowerBook screen to same as print, but print is darker! Anyone experienced this - and what is the fix?

Installed Yosemite and iPhoto 9.6. A lot of my photos are now too dark and the colour is way off from the originals. Any suggestions to correct this mess. I did a backup prior to installing Yosemite and iPhoto 9.6.

Check the monitor settings in the System/Displays/Color preference pane.  You may have to change the color profile used or calibrate the monitor.
Also check the System/Accessibility preference pane to see if the Increase contrast checkbox is checked. If it is check it and see if there's any improvement.

  • Sound for Alarms much too loud; display in menu shows low setting

    Hello,
I'm having a little problem with my MBP C2Duo (10.4.9 German):
I have configured different sound output levels for alarms and other sound (via System-preference). The menu-bar shows that low setting for the general sound output. But in fact: the level of Alarms is almost set to full, even though I set it DIFFERENT in Sound-pref.
I know that it is possible to get different settings (and have them shown accurately in the menu-bar), nevertheless I cannot find a way to reset everything back to basic setup and then configure it right an proper.
    A hint Anyone?
    Greetings, Rolf

  • My sound is not too loud?

The sound of my mac book air is not loud enough? Why?
I can hardly hear other person on call. Please help me out.

    Hi AnuragRana,
There is no quick answer to your question, as everyone interprets sounds differently. What I will try to help with, however, is to give you steps and information about optimizing your computer, as well as the service manual for the internal parts.
This way, you can check for any harddrive issues, make sure your system is efficient, and search the manual to find out how many fans the G6 has.  I hope these help:

  • IMac is much too loud after updating to 10.4.9

    Hello!
I just installed the 10.4.9 Update on my Intel iMac. Right after reboot I launched iTunes and noticed that the sound volume of the Mac had been increased by far!
What has been my normal listening volume (50%) is now really loud, normal volume seems to be 1 or 2 boxes on the scale you see when changing the volume.
This is really annoying as you cannot listen to quiet music any more without changing the volume directly in iTunes (what doesn't work with the remote). Furthermore this would mean to change the volume in any program manually. I think that is not the way an Apple system should work...
    iMac CoreDuo 20"   Mac OS X (10.4.9)

Sorry for that. I should have had a closer look first, though I did not find a topic concerning this special problem.
Well, I hope there is some update coming up from Apple, for I don't see any practical solution to this.

  • The passive tabs on Firefox 29 are much too dark!

The dark gray background doesn't provide enough contrast for the title of the tab, so it takes an extra moment to read it. That's a time-waster and a nuisance. Is a fix in the works?

winsbury, I am just another Firefox user, not a Developer and have not closely followed the bugs, I did however see one for Firefox for fix to a problem with Ububtu, and IIRC another about contrasting toolbars on Windows.
Personally I would have thought it was not an ideal design and against accessibility policies to deliberately make tabs disappear into a background without being easy to reverse. I will tag this as escalate. Let's see how HelpDesk staff respond.

  • IMovie to iDVD--Video too dark, sound too loud--Help!

I created three iMovie projects for my son's swim team, then made a DVD using iDVD. It was fine when viewed in iDVD's preview, but when burned to the DVD-R the video was too dark and the sound was way too loud. This is footage taken on a Sony digital camcorder (DCR-TRV11).
I did the iDVD project by starting from scratch from within iDVD, then dragging the iMovie pieces and still images into the iDVD project. The iMovie pieces were prepared by using Share to make them into "full quality" .dv movies.
When I play the finished DVD on my iMac, there are no unusual problems with the video or audio. It looks and sounds like it did when played from the digital camcirder. But when played on both of my standalone DVD players + TVs, the video is too dark and the audio is much too loud.
Any idea why this is, and to fix it? I don't find a way to reduce the audio volume in iMovie. Maybe there is a workaround using the Relative Volume feature, but all my clips have a similar sound level. Any help will be appreciated.

    iMac G5   Mac OS X (10.4.3)

when burned to the DVD-R the video was too dark
They is a VERY slight darkening during the MPG-2 compression process (see my pages Digital Video Color Bars Test at http://homepage.mac.com/profpixel/color_bars/colorbars.htm and iMovie HD and iDVD 5 Gray Patch Test at http://homepage.mac.com/profpixel/gray_patches/graypatches.htm )
I suspect what you are seening is a major difference in brightness/contrast between your computer monitior and your TV set (and in fact you admit this: "When I play the finished DVD on my iMac, there are no unusual problems with the video or audio. It looks and sounds like it did when played from the digital camcirder. But when played on both of my standalone DVD players + TVs, the video is too dark and the audio is much too loud.") so you aren't seeing an iDVD problem.

  • Sound too loud durning commercials and chase scenes.

Does anyone know of a program or way to to keep sound from getting too loud durning commercials and chase scenes? I am looking for a program or anything that will help.

Try turning down the microphone level, and speaking up more yourself. We have inverse square law in effect here.
Most audio is highly compressed at the server  so as to not overdrive the devices in that signal chain, unless you are using very high end encoders(read $$$$).
Check your software and see if there is a noise gate setting, which would allow you to set a threshold for which the microphone will activate, anything below the threshold the mic will be turned off.
Also let your officemates know that you are "on air and keep their comments to a minimum, and if they must confer, whisper into each others ear, just like on a TV set or a radio studio.
Or you can spend alot of money for a number of pieces of equipment to accomplish this action.(and not always with great results)
As you probaly guess I have a fair amount of audio experience, decades.

  • Headphone sound too loud - how to get very fine volume control in osx

I could not use my headphones on my new MBP, because the sound was always too loud, even on the smallest setting. It appears that lots of other people have similar problems, so here is a way to fix this:
To get very fine sound volume control I use soundflower fromhttp://code.google.com/p/soundflower/. You have to restart after installing it. Then go to preferences/sound/output and choose soundflower(2ch). Start soundflower from the applications folder, click on the flower symbol in the top pannel and soundflower(2ch) built in output. Then go to Audio setup and change the master for soundflower(2ch). This way you can get the global sound less loud or you can amplify it.
Hope this helps a few people

    You saved my life (and my ears) ! Thank you marcel-sl for sharing this (;
    Prety cool software if you have an USB headset too loud. Now, I can use F11 and F12 (;

  • 2nd time this has happened. Computer making noises too loud for computer.

Okay, seriously I have had enough. While using Garage Band editing music, my computer once again made a too-loud beep/honk noise. This has happened once before. Now my audio/built in speakers are F'ed! NOW ALL MY AUDIO SOUNDS LIKE THIS: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OcTHGDOLEoc (you gotta play the video. )
This has happened once before, but everything was okay except for a bit of distortion. WHY does this keep happening?! Heres a bit more information:
    - Using Garage Band, didnt press ANY buttons to trigger sounds
    - In using wireless internet, password protected
    - I only had iMovie and iTunes opened (as well as GB)
    - THIS IS THE SECOND TIME THIS ** HAS HAPPENED
    - The sound was WAY too loud for the computer. It was like Max times 50
    - I've only owned my Mac for about a year.
    - I do not want to get a new bloody Mac, I just downgraded from SL.
I'm not really happy atm, so dont give me stupid answers.
(Wow, it sounds like im listening to AM radio! WOW! ... -.- )

I don't think you got a KP when the machine was off, but rather you may have closed the lid before the MB was fully powered down and it went into a sleep state.
Did you try running the Apple Hardware Test to see if the ram is bad? Since yo never had a KP before adding new ram, and the only change was adding said ram. My guess is that its the memory that is the cause.
I cannot vouch for patriot ram, but I suggest in the future you consider Crucial as its a higher quality ram.

  • Action is too loud and talk is too low! Any suggestions?

I have noticed when I rent movies from iTunes on my Apple TV I find myself constantly adjusting the volume. It doesn't matter if I am using my tv speakers or my surround sound speakers. The action scenes are way too loud and I have to strain to hear people talking. Any suggestions?
