Kerberos SMB Printing - NT_STATUS_ACCESS_DENIED

I am currently unable to use kerberos authentication to shared smb printers on a Windows 2008 R2 print server. I am using the documentation that used to be available in the White Paper, "Enterprise Printing with Mac OSX...." before they moved everything to videos.
I have completed the following steps:
1. Verified forward and reverse dns for the mac's hostname
2. Verified forward and reverse dns for the print server's hostname
3. Verified (using scutil) that the Mac's HostName is correct and is fully qualified, ie hostname.domain.name
4. Installed the printer which was successfully listed in AD
5. Verified the printer's presence using lpstat -a
6. Successfully printed a job using the default NTLM authentication
7. Configured the printer for kerberos using the command lpadmin - <printer> -o auth-info-required=negotiate
These steps were completed on a new domain that was built for no other purpose than to validate kerberos printing. It consists of a 2003 r2 DC and a 2008 r2 print server.
At this point, if I send a print job, it will be attempted and the printer in the dock will "bounce" but lpstat -t will immediately report "Tree connect failed (NTSTATUS_ACCESSDENIED)".
klist on the Mac shows that I have a current unexpired kerberos ticket referencing the logged in user
The Windows print server security logs show 2 failed login attempts, but show the authentication package as NTLM.

These errors seem to show that Kerberos auth (negotiate) is attempted once, then NTLM (username, password) is fallen back to. An additional attempt to print to this printer will immediately attempt NTLM and prompt for a password unless the printer is "re-kerberized" using lpadmin.
Can anyone offer any advice for further troubleshooting?

jameswatson3,
This isn't much help but I too just recently attempted to using the Enterprise Printing with Mac OS X whitepaper in an 08 R2 environment and am experiencing the exact same problems.

  • SMB printing still busted

I've seen many threads where there are some fixes, such as for hijack. However, I still haven't seen anything that repairs the SMB print function. Do I really need to perform a re-install from the CD and manually update the machine without the sec. update to print again? Right now I have to VM to Windows and print from there.

Yeah I have tried all of the posted suggestions in that thread as well as many others. Nothing works. I have left feedback for Apple and hopefully along with all the other posted feedback, they'll actually fix the problem. In the meantime, if anyone has a cure or fix that I have not mentioned, please feel free to post.
    Thanks!

  • Printing to windows printer via SMB - Printing garbled text

    Hi all.
I have been working on this issue for around 3 hrs this morning and finally figured it out. Thought I'd post what I did to help others with similar issues.
    Here's my set up:
I have a PC with HP photosmart printer connected to it. I've a Macbook Pro that I connect to the PC via SMB protocol for file sharing. If I wanted to print from the mac to the printer I had to disconnect the printer form the PC and directly connect it to the mac. I wanted to be able to print from the Mac to the printer via the PC. Should be that hard right as I have already successfully file shared via SMB.
Well it was a little difficult. I did many a search on here and the web and eventually found the following article:
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?path=Mac/10.4/en/mh2231.html
So, following these steps i tried to print a single page word (office 2008 for mac) doc from the mac. Hey presto! The printer kicked into life and started...
...problem was it spewed out around 20 pages of Garbled text! I tought it might have been print jobs stacked up from the last unsuccessful attemt at doing this but no, no jobs there. Thought it might have been Word/office for mac, etc. so tried to print from Text Edit but same thing.
After hrs of screaming, F'ing & Blinding I finally figured out it was to do with what printer I had it set up on. I went into Print & Fax in System Preferences, highlighted the printer and clicked printer setup tab. In the drop down tab I selected printer model. It was set on Generic.
In the drop down list there it shows a huge selection of printers. my particular model was not there so I chose the closest thing and selected that.
After exiting all that and trying again it worked.
    I'm very happy.
    Adam

Hi iVirtual, what Mac OS are you running, Leopard (10.5.4) or Tiger (10.4.11)? Also, is your printer directly attached to your pc or is it a network printer directly on the local area network? One last question, do you have a firewall (like Trend Micro or Norton Internet Security) on your PC?
From my Mac running Leopard, I have no problem printing to a printer directly attached to my WindowsXP machine. However, I don't have the same luck from my Tiger Machines.
When I print to any networked printer (by that I mean printers directly attached to the network) from the WindowsXP machine with SP3, I always have to use the IP address. The printer.local name no longer works since I installed SP3.
simonparker, If your printer is directly attached to your PC using a USB cable, I don't think you'll be able to see it with the Bonjour Printer Wizard application. Since your printer is shared, you might check your WORKGROUP name on your PC. Something you might check is this:
Do you have a password on your user account on the PC? You'll probably need a password on your PC account. I don't think you can share anything if you don't have a password (I could be wrong, but it has never worked for me without a password).
On leopard, when I added the printer to the Mac I did this:
    1) bring up System Preferences/Print&Fax
    2) Press the + sign under the printer list, when the add window pops up, choose the "Windows" icon and you should see your workgroup name in the left list.
    3) Choose the workgroup and it should populate with your machine name.
    4) Select the machine name in the middle list and you should get a login and password dialog box.
    5) Enter your PC's Username and Password.
    6) You should see a list of shared printers in the right most list.
    7) Select the printer and then select the driver.
Your printer should now be configured on the Mac. I know that I had to enter my PC's user name and password several times before I could print.

  • Remotely adding a Kerberos Authenticated printer

Hi there, I am deploying a printer Via MCX which works fine. however the machines are using an LDAP kerberos authentication setup. If i manually set kerberos on the machine using the following steps it works fine.
    1. Open the URL "http://localhost:631/printers" in Safari.
    2. For each printer you wish to share using Kerberos:
    3. Click the printer name in the list.
    4. Choose "Set Default Options" from the "Administration" pop-up menu.
    5. Click "Policies".
    6. Choose "kerberos" from the "Operation Policy:" pop-up menu.
    7. Click "Set Default Options".
The problem i have is I can't do this on each machine manually.
This setting is not held in the PPD for that printer. I have set the option, copied the PPD from /etc/cups/ppd and then created a new printer using this PPD but the option is not enabled. I can see that when you enable this option it is writing to and then deleting the following files
    /var/spool/cups/cache/printername.png
    /var/spool/cups/cache/printername.data.N
    /var/spool/cups/cache/printername.png-psHg
/var/spool/cups/cache/printername.data I am sure this is what is setting the option but i can't see anything in lpadmin or lpoptions that would allow this to be set via the command line. Any Ideas?

I have found the Apple whitepaper on Enterprise printing and this command is supposed to enable kerberos.
However when you run it and then check through the CUPS interface kerberos is not enabled.
first you get the queue name from this
    lpstat -a
    lpadmin -p printername -o auth-info-required=negotiate
Now according to the white paper the process changed from 10.5 to 10.6
I am wondering if anyone knows if things have changed from 10.6 to 10.7

  • FinalCutServer, Kerberos, and Printing Problems

Has any one come across the inability to print when Windows Active Directory has Kerberos DES Encryption enabled on user account? Obviously we have a separate domain controller and print server. Users can press print but job doesn't show up to be released in papercut (printing authentication)

    Geoff,
This sounds like a printer driver issue. Do you have the latest driver software? Have you contacted OCE? Have you tried uninstalling/reinstalling the driver?

  • SMB printer authentication by domain credentials

On our network, the Macs are set up to authenticate with Active Directory. Our printers are accessible through SMB shares from our Windows print server. Our help desk recently brought up an issue with this, though.
When users first try to print to a printer, they are shown a prompt asking for their username and password (http://imgur.com/j6fp7). Mac OS X fills in their pretty username ("John Smith") instead of their domain username ("smith"). Users assume this is correct, try to authenticate, and then call the help desk when the printer doesn't print their stuff.
As we've learned, the correct format for authentication is "DOMAIN\username", but since it's unintuitive, it almost always leads to a help desk call. Even worse, because the authentication isn't visibly rejected (the printer just won't print), the keychain will now store the user's incorrect credentials, leading to even more confusion. When you pile on our 270-day mandatory password reset policy, now the users' keychains have multiple sets of invalid credentials for the same printer, and they're calling back every several months about the same issue.
There are several ways to approach this, but I'm not sure which would be best. I've been trying to Google up a solution, but no luck. Is there any way to get Mac OS X to show the prompt with the domain field instead (http://students.jccc.edu/documents/images/osx-smb_login.jpg)?

Hello and welcome to Apple Discussions.
I don't have a solution but a suggested workaround. Instead of using SMB to connect to the Windows shared printers, you could enable Unix Print Services on the Windows print server and then use LPR for the Mac print queues. This avoids the need for the Mac users to authenticate when printing.
With the Mac client the LPR queue would consist of entering the Windows server name or IP address for the host name and the Windows printer share name for the LPR queue.

  • Can't connect to smb print server

I have a D-Link DNS-325 NAS with a built-in USB print server, with a Canon printer connected to it. The printer works fine through the Windows 7 machine in the house, but not through my Mac (running Yosemite--also had the same problem when I was on Mavericks). The printer initially looks like it connects, but when I send a job to the printer, it will pause and I'll get an "unable to connect to the printer" error.
The print server uses Samba, and there aren't any configuration options for it. I've tried connecting through LDP, spoolss and the "Windows" tab under Printers & Scanners. I've added the printer using both System Preferences and the CUPS interface. I've tried connecting as a guest and as the user account on the NAS. I've tried entering the credentials in the pop-up window after installing the printer and in the address when installing the printer. I've checked my Keychain to make sure there are no leftovers to delete. I've used the manufacturer's driver as well as the Gutenprint CUPS driver and the generic PostScript driver.
I'm completely stuck. Does anyone have any other thoughts?

Derp. Turns out there was a firmware update I didn't know about. Probably should have checked that earlier.

  • Gnome 3 smb printer

In fedora 15 I was easily able to add a printer that is connected to my windows machine, by opening the printer settings and searching for networked printers. In arch nothing seems to show up when I go to system settings>printers>add>network. I can view my windows shares fine in nautilus. I installed cups and samba.
EDIT: managed to get it working by installing "system-config-printer-gnome". Much nicer than the crappy default gnome printer setup.

  • SMB problems.... printing and virtual homes

I have SMB printing enabled and I am finding that all of the PCs using it show in their queue that they do not have permissions to print, however half of them can print despite the error message....
Has anyone else seen this or know what could cause it?
Also, SMB virtual homes with not let me shut it off. It keeps checking the box back when I hit save.

    Hello Matthias
See Don's reply from Feb 7, 2011. This applies to any version of CRW32.exe. The viewer you are refering to, is simply a "crippled" version of the exe in that it does not let you change db connections, etc., etc. But it still uses the WIN APIs. Re.:
Furthermore, as a customer of the Crystal Reports product (paying for licenses since more that a decade now) we would expect there is a solution to this problem. This means that the print functions offered by the CR runtime should be able to generate an output that can be parsed by external programs (like fax software), just like is was in the previous versions of the CR runtime.
See Don's reply from Feb 7, 2011 where we explains the issue succinctly and in pretty good detail.

  • YES! How to make PRINT QUOTAS WORK with 10.4

How to make PRINT QUOTAS WORK in 10.4
After struggling for quite some time, I finally found a pretty simple way to make print quotas work.
First, I’ll tell you our setup. We have 3 different computer centers with a variety of eMacs and new Intel iMacs, all clients are running 10.4.8, and each of those 3 centers has its own HP Laserjet 4200 printer. Our dual G5 server is running Server v.10.4.8. Client computers and printers have static IP addresses. All clients are bound to the server with the standard WorkGroup Manager/ LDAPv3 Directory Access scheme - such that all students login to the clients with their network username/password to mount their home directory on the client.
Next, I’ll tell you what does not work. IF YOU WANT PRINT QUOTAS TO WORK, you cannot use Workgroup Manager to assign a printer to any managed user account, user group, or computer group. Why? Because when you go to a client, and Show Info on the printer that is being pushed by Workgroup Manager, you’ll see that the queue name is not the queue that you’ve setup in Server Admin. Instead, you’ll see the queue name is “MCX” or something along those lines. Even if you manually edit the Workgroup print preference file that is being pushed to clients, it still will not work.
Drawbacks of my technique: In my case, students will see all 3 printers (1 from each lab) available to them no matter which lab they are in. Not the best, but for now I think it’ll be worth it to be able to control wasteful printing. Students may be able to move/delete the preference file (see below), but they’ll only be hurting themselves, as they won’t have any printers at all then.
Okay, here’s how I did it:
    1. If you have setup any printers to be pushed out via Workgroup Manager’s preference enforcement to individual users, usergroups, or computer groups, turn those preferences off and leave them off.
    2. Delete any existing printers in your Printer Setup Utility and/or Server Admin. Add and setup a new printer queue using the Server Admin> Print service. I added the printer through the Server Admin application, not Printer Setup Utility (may not matter). However, I did go into that latter utility to set the model of the printer. Now, back in Server Admin, edit the printer queue to turn on these services IPP, LPR (bonjour off), and of course check off the enforce quotas box. (No student Windows clients, so I didn’t tinker with SMB print service). I went ahead and specified the standard cover sheet – it will be handy while troubleshooting.
    3. In Workgroup Manager, select the users that you want to enforce quotas upon, go to the Printer Quota tab (not the preference pane) and, in my case, I selected All Queues and specified a quota, and clicked Save.
    4. Delete all printers that appear in the Printer Setup Utility from each client computer (I know, UGH).
    5. For all network users, you need to edit a preference file and put it into each user’s home directory. That file is “com.apple.print.favorites.plist” and as you guessed, it needs to go into the Library> Preferences folder of every one of your network users’ home directories. Now, the content of that file is crucial… what it should show is the name of the queue(s) you created in Server Admin above, and be immediately followed by an “@” and the address of the server that is hosting that queue. For example, my queue’s name is TCStudentQ and the server’s address is student.mydomain.org… so my preference file has this entry: [email protected]. If you have more than one queue, you’ll have more entries. Be sure that the network user has at least Read level access under Group or Others. I’d recommend making the server System account the Owner of the file, and be sure to lock the file so the users can’t easily trash it. If you don’t know how to create this file in the first place, what you can do is go to a client computer, and log into the client with a dummy network account. Then open Printer Setup Utility, and you should see the queue you created in step 2. Add that printer, and then the file will be created in your dummy account’s home directory under Library> Preferences. Now you can use that file to distribute to other user’s folders… but don’t forget that each user needs Read level access.
    6. That’s it. Works for me. When they exceed the quota, all that spits out is the cover page. It’d be nice if there was a quota monitor utility on the client side so users can see how many pages they have remaining and when the quota will automatically reset. I plan to start the quota on a Monday morning and go on a weekly duration. Not sure what a good starting point is… perhaps 25 pages every school week.
    7. Hey Apple Computer, Inc. Server Developers & Project Managers, I truly hope you’re reading this and can explain why print quotas don’t function as you have documented and advertised. I don’t mean to toot my own horn, but I’ve spent way too much time discovering this workaround, and I know it will help thousands of others with the same problem. I can see where your Print Quota system breaks down, and I think you need to fix these issues or at least document them. Don’t forget to fix serious 10.4 Server bugs before leaving it behind for 10.5 Server – many of us will continue using 10.4 Server for at least another year or two.

    David,
Your assumption that I didn't read the documentation is incorrect. I read that 10.4 documentation over and over - followed it to the letter to no avail. Perhaps it was updated in the last few weeks? So, do you have a fully operable printer quota system in conjunction with a managed computer or user group that has a managed printer pushed to the group via Workgroup Manager? I can push a managed printer to a managed group without a problem, but the quotas won't be enforced unless I use the workaround above and cut Workgroup Manager's managed/pushed printer out of the picture.
I know this is a user-to-user forum - however, I'm also aware that Apple tech support often chime in here, so it doesn't hurt to post a message to them in the context of a larger posting about a 'known issue'. I have used the server feedback form... hasn't seemed to me to be very helpful in the past.

  • Need helping printing to networked printers.

I need help setting up network printers that have a code on them for each individual. There is no place to put a code so the printer will know who is printing what. I have installed 3 printers and they will not print, they just go to a paused mode and when you hit resume in reverts back to pause because it is looking for a code. I have tried it another way but it asks for a user name and password and all we have are codes. The workplace is using a windows based server and the copiers are listed as followed.

I need help to be able to print from my mac. I also have parallels running with xp installed and all the printers are installed on that side and printing fine. Hopefully someone can help me out.
    Thanks in advance

Hello and welcome to Apple Discussions.
In order to provide the user with the ability to input a user code, the respective printer driver would have to provide the facility. If this feature did exist on a previous version of OS X, then you may have to check the vendors web site to see if there is a driver for 10.6.
If you are not sure if the function was supported previously, then go through all the user menus for the driver. The function may be present but located in an unusual location. Or it could require an additional file (aka plugin) that could be missing from the driver installation or not compatible with 10.6.
The other thing to note is that if you have the Mac's printing via a Windows queue, you will have to provide user credentials for SMB print queues. This is typically a Windows user account - not the Mac's account details. If you don't want to create accounts for the Mac users on the Windows server, then you can use LPD rather than SMB to connect to the Windows queues. This does require UNIX Printing Services to be enabled on the server.

  • Printing w/Leopard & AD-based Windows Print Queues:

For those interested, I have written an overview of printing in Leopard 10.5.0 to Windows print servers (published queues Active Directory). Your mileage may vary. This document contains the good the bad and the ugly.
    Objective:
Get Leopard based Macs to print to AD published SMB print queues hosted on Windows 2003 print servers. Sounds easy, huh?
    Overview:
    Print Servers:
    Windows 2003 print servers.
    Printers:
All the printers in my test were all new HP network b/w printers or network MFP b/w printers. All of them were less than 2 years old. None of them were consumer-grade home USB printers.
    Mac Clients:
My test clients were Intel MacBook Pros and Intel iMacs running 10.5.0 Leopard. All of them had user AD accounts and all Macs were bound to AD using Directory Utility (or dsconfigad)
The AD clients have a unique naming convention at my company. In my environment we use the initials of the person for their login name (SAM). Example:
Real “human” Name: “Stephen Paul Jobs”
Long Active Directory Name: “Steve Jobs”
    Short Active Directory Name: “spj”
    “Legacy” NT Names: “domain\spj”
Full domain name (used for email etc): “[email protected]
    (you get the idea...)
Note: My Mac clients are not in an Open Directory domain. No “Magic Triangle” in this environment. Pure AD for the sake of this example. I am not managing the Mac clients via MCX in this scenario.
    Print Protocols:
All the print queues hosted on the print servers were standard SMB/CIFS print queues. The syntax (UNC) looks like this:
    smb://print_server.domain/queue
(This syntax is invisible to most users printing to AD-published printers (or any network based printer really) . Most users will have no idea what protocols are being used.)
    Procedures:
Part 1: Set up a new printer from an existing AD-published print queue:
From the Apple menu select “System Preferences...” (or launch it from /Applications). The Printer Setup Utility app no longer exists. Apple has discontinued it fro various reasons.
Click on the Printer & Fax pane.
Click the “+” button on the left. This will launch the Apple Printer Browser (called “AddPrinter”, and lives in /System/Library/CoreServices), which looks similar to the previous browser in Tiger. The Printer Browser by default will usually show network printers vai Directory Services (AD/OD etc) as well as Bonjour printers and Mac OS X based shared printers – if they are shared via IPP and LPR under certain circumstances).
Select the desired AD-published print queue you want to print to by highlighting it in the browser list and clicking the “Add” button. (Note: Print queues published via Active Directory will show up as “Open Directory” printers, even though this is not 100% technically correct.)
Before the queue will be added, you will be prompted to authenticate as a local administrator. If you are not an admin you are screwed. Enter your name and password.
Once the print queue is added, it will show up on your Mac in several ways (barring any bugs – see below). Here are the ways to tell if you have added the print queue successfully:
A The new print queue will now be displayed in the Print & Fax system pref pane (but not always – see below).
B You will see a printer proxy application in ~/Library/Printers/ which corresponds to your new print queue. This is the print monitor app that will show up in your Dock when you print to the queue.
C You can see the new print queue via the CUPS admin page at http://localhost:631/printers.
D You can see your new print queue from the Terminal by typing this command: “lpstat –v” (type “man lpstat” for more info on the lpstat and related commands)
E You can also see your printers by launching an print-enabled application such as TextEdit or Safari and printing a page. You will be presented with Leopard’s new print dialog box (which now includes a print preview pane). From the “Printer” drop-down menu you can see all of your printers. You can add a printer from here too (which takes you to the steps listed above)
(of course, most end users will only use option A listed above. The other options are more abstract and complicated)
Now that the AD print queue has been setup on your Mac, you can print to it (maybe).
Part 2: Printing to an AD-published print queue:
Open a document you want to print.
Choose “Page Setup...” from the File menu if you need to configure the job. (Optional)
Choose “Print” from the File menu.
From the Print dialog box, choose the desired print queue from the Printer menu
    Click the Print button.
You will need to authenticate with a valid Active Directory username and password. You don’t have to have administrator credentials, but you have to verify that you are a domain member. In my environment, my Windows print server doesn't require authentication, but for some reason Leopard or CUPS makes you authenticate. (See below). Not only is this a major PIA, but the authentication dialog box itself is formatted to include the wrong credentials format for authentication in the first place.
Volia! Done. Easy huh? Not really. Read on for the ugly stuff.
    My Complaints and Caveats:
OK, so here’s where I vent, complain and scratch my head. Join in on the fun.
Sometimes shared print queues don’t show up in the Print & Fax system preference pane after they have been added. I have no idea why. The local CUPS admin page (http://localhost:631) on my Mac test clients can see the connected queues, and the queues show up in ~/Library/Printers. The “lpstat –v” command shows the connect queues too. But for some reason, sometimes network print queues that I have previously setup (and use regularly) don’t show up in the Leopard Print & Fax preference pane. Local USB printers always show up fine for me.
    2. When challenged to authenticate a print job to a Windows print server (AD), the Mac’s authentication dialog box pre-populates the AD user’s name in the “Name” field incorrectly. Example:
A user named “Joe Is Cool” (short name “JIC”) prints a job to the print server. The print auth dialog box challenges him for a name and password. It is pre-populated already with the name of “Cool, Joe”. When a valid AD password is entered, the job is rejected (it fails authentication and gets put on hold – which is hard to see this unless you explicitly look at the Printer.app proxy tool in the Dock). However, if the user replaces “Cool, Joe” with his official AD short name of “JIC” and then enters his AD password, the print job is accepted and printed. I wish Apple didn’t try and pre-populate the dialog box! Can this be avoided or prevented?
In my environment, my Windows print server doesn't even require authentication, but for some reason Leopard or CUPS makes you authenticate. I’m working with my Windows administrators to figure this out. It will only accept user names with the short name format. It will not accept long (full) names or NT legacy names.
    3) The Printer Setup Utility app, which used to live in /Applications/Utilities, no longer exists. Apple has discontinued it for various reasons. Mainly security and simplicity. I wish it was still available, but the system pref pane works fine (well, usually)
    4) Active Directory-based print queues will show up in the OS X Printer Browser as “Open Directory” printers, even though this is not 100% technically correct. Why can’t OS X tell the difference between OD queues and AD queues and label them as such?
    5) Leopard has locked down the ability to add network printers. You now must be a local administrator in 10.5 or later. I understand the importance of this security measure in certain environments, but why can’t there be an option in the Security preference pane to “Allow non-admins to add printers”? This would make me very happy.
    6) Setting the default printer and resetting the CUPS system now require you to right-click in the left side of the Print & Fax pane. There no longer is a button or menu option to do this.
    7) Sometimes after a job has printed the printer proxy app (from ~/Library/Printers) stays in the Dock and won’t go away.
    Conclusion
Please chime in on your experiences, bugs, opinions and comments.

I have noticed several of the changes in our system when printing to an AD printer from a Leopard client. I have one issue that is pretty odd and I'm not sure what is going on. When printing an Excel worksheet, I get prompted for AD credentials. After submitting the job, the print queue says "Waiting for Authentication", I have to press the Resume button and then the authentication dialog pops up. I successfully authenticate (My auth dialog is populated correctly and the remember to keychain option is selected) and the job prints fine. If I print the same document again (without closing the worksheet or Excel), or any other worksheet, I still have to reauth. I can print just fine to the same printer from Textwriter and I do not need to authenticate. Weird...

  • Can't print to my HP D2460 over the network anymore, after upgrade to SL.

    Hi,
I upgraded to Snow Leopard today. Now I can't print to my HP D2460 Deskjet printer anymore. The printer is shared from my Windows XP system via SMB. When I try to print I see the following message in the print queue on the Windows XP system: "Remote Downlevel Document - Error printing".
I have updated the print drivers at both ends and still can't get it to work.
If I connect the printer to a USB port on my MacBook Pro, it prints fine. It's only the network/SMB printing that seems to be broken.
Has anyone else had this problem? How can I fix it?
    Cheers.

  • Remote Windoze Printer

Three months ago, I had to buy a new printer because the old one experienced a slow and painful death.  Fast forward three months to the present day, my new printer has suddenly died.  Now, there's only one printer left in the house, and it's in another room, attached to a windoze machine.
How do I set up my computer and the printer so that I can print to it remotely?

    three ways:
    samba/cups
    lpd/cups
    ipp/cups
I prefer lpd/cups it is universal (works with any network attached printer).
    1) enable unix printing services on windows (would require installation disk)
    2) enable unix printing services on windows
    3) set printer share (either allow all or user)
    4) open port tcp 515 in windows firewall
    5) you are done with windows
on your linux box enable cups, connect to windows share (open konqueror (firefox is "loosing"sometimes control buttons) which is lpd, and point to http://localhost:631, install ppd file (if not available in the local printer db, get it from http://www.cups.org/ppd.php)
test it and that is all
with samba, you need to configure samba and cups and use http://localhost:631 to enable smb printer.
make sure that printing is allowed on your linux firewall
