Kernel downgrade

Howdie,
as it appears there is a problem with wine / World of Warcraft / kernel 2.6.33+ I would like to downgrade my system to a 2.6.32 kernel. Now, I am a rather sad newbie in the world of kernel-ing when it comes to arch, and the wiki seemed to imply that I would have to manually compile what I need.
Is there a somewhat "softer" route than that?

Thanks guys, but I find that weird stuff is happening here. Trying to install vcrun2005 via winetricks I get a lot of

Why am I trying to revert my kernel, you ask?  I'm using a PCIe RAID adapter by HighPoint and its CLI tools have a glaring incompatibility problem with anything later than 2.6.27.  The developers have been notified by no progress has been made, unfortunately.
I'm hesitant to backup/delete all the files listed unless that is the only solution.  Any and all help or suggestions would be greatly appreciated.  Thank you.

Thank you both for the quick responses.  For convenience/my inability's sake I'd love to resolve this using only Pacman.  I still haven't taken the time to make sense of PKGBUILDs for kernels yet.
The general consensus would then be 'pacman -Ufd /var/cache/pacman/pkg/kernel26-2.6.27.10-1-x86_64.pkg.tar.gz' or 'pacman -R kernel26-firmware'?

  • How to downgrade kernel 3.10 - blank screen problem after upgrade

After a recent upgrade, which included kernel 3.10, my ASUS zenbook ux21a boots into a blank screen as reported in these topics:
    https://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php?id=167411
    https://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php?id=167463
    https://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php?id=167518
How do I downgrade to kernel 3.9, please?
On this laptop I only have dual boot Arch and Win8 (but also a vacant partition). My grub timeout is set to 0 seconds because I almost never use windows, hence my problem is to get any control of the PC. I have attempted a fresh install from USB, but it takes me into exactly the same blank screen. I also attempted install of the older arch version, which went ok until post-installation reboot, following which I ended up with the same blank screen - probably because during the installation the new kernel 3.10 was downloaded.
I read in the above topics that people solved the problem by downgrading the kernel - somehow via chrooting from live arch usb. I lack knowledge on how to perform the kernel downgrade - perhaps someone can give instructions or at least tips how to get started.
Interestingly, the same kernel 3.10 upgrade did not cause problems on a very similar predecessor model ASUS us21e - this info may help the advanced guys to diagnose the source of the problem.

Thanks, andrekp, but it didn't work on my UX21A.
Here's what I did (screen stays black all throughout):
    1. Boot the computer. I believe this takes me to login promt at tty1.
    2. I login by blindly entering userid, <enter>, password, <enter>
    3. speaker-test <enter> - I hear noise. Ctl+c to get out (noise stops).
    4. Switch to tty2 by pressing ctl+alt+f2.
    5. In tty2, I login by blindly entering userid, <enter>, password, <enter>; then speaker-test successful on tty2.
    6. Switch back to tty1 by pressing ctl+alt+f1; speaker-test successful again on tty1.
    7. Type startx. I assume that X and openbox are started successfully: I start lxterminal by pressing my custom short-cut keys combo that I specified in openbox's rc.xml; and speaker-test gives me audible noise from within lxterminal.
Again, screen stayed dark as night all the time, so the problem remains.
As my time allows, I try to come up to speed and follow/replicate the attempts to identify/resolve this problem made by more advanced guys in other topics:
    https://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php?id=167411
    https://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php?id=167463
    https://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php?id=167518
    https://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php?id=167314
The problem originally arose at # pacman -Syu, which included kernel upgrade from 3.9.9 to 10.3.3. After a later upgrade to 10.3.5, the problem remains. I've enabled 'testing' repositories on my other laptop, UX21E (which doesn't have this problem despite being the closest model!) - and I wait for the new 'testing' kernel to be released in arch, hoping to do a blind upgrade on UX21A and that it solves the problem. I also monitor https://www.kernel.org for when kernel 3.11 becomes available. If I manage to install kernel 3.11 even before it's released in arch-testing, maybe the problem will be gone...
In the mean time, I keep using the UX21A computer having installed Lubuntu on another partition (it has kernel 3.8).
    Thanks again!

  • MCE errors with kernel 2.6.32.x

I'm running a dual Xeon machine, x86_64, 8G memory, Radeon HD 4350 graphics.
Back in February, I upgraded the system and went from the 2.6.31.6-1 kernel to the 2.6.32.7-1 kernel, at which point the machine started doing random reboots and reporting MCE errors.  I posted over in the newbie section but marked it solved when a downgrade to the 2.6.31.6-1 kernel seemed to solve the problem.  At that point I did run a memory test and found no errors, and temperature monitoring didn't show any problems.
The machine has been rock solid ever since.
Last night I upgraded everything again, and this time went to the 2.6.32.10-1 kernel.  The random reboots began again, again with MCE errors.  Although I've only caught one of them and didn't get things written down, it did look like different error messages.
I've now been working on it for a couple hours with no stability problems.  Before downgrading, I was getting random reboots every 15 minutes or so.  Other than the kernel downgrade, I haven't changed anything.
I haven't been able to find anything out about the problem, and other than preventing kernel upgrades for awhile, am not sure how to proceed.

Regarding link quality:  I had found complaints from other users (on Ubuntu boards) that the open source Atheros drivers for linux have a problem where they didn't actually utilize the wifi's full broadcast/receive power.
This leads to low link quality even when you are very close to the access point.  The random connection drops happen because your card doesn't hear the AP's beacon clearly enough, and it thinks you've moved out of range of the network.
The advice given was to use ndiswrapper to install the (proprietary) wifi Windows driver for your card (which in my case I was able to download from Atheros' web site).  This boosts the card's power to full, giving you better link quality.
In my case signal level and link quality improved by about 20-30 dBm and 20% respectively.  The connection dropouts stopped altogether.
I've heard mention on some other threads here that the latest ath-drivers in the linux 2.26.32 kernel are improved, so the problem may not be as bad as before.  I have not tried them though, since the ndiswrapper solution is working well for me.

  • [SOLVED] recent kernel-break + invalid ELF headers

    Dear all!
It seems, that yesterdays "repo-sync glitch" (https://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php?id=175637) had me, too.
Unfortunately, I'm not able to use the chrooted pacman! It gives me
pacman: error while loading shared libraries: /usr/lib/libcurl.so.4: invalid ELF header
and I'm not able to do anything - e.g. Kernel downgrade.
I tried the pacman -r /mnt ... method from LIVE but I got stuck with "unable to find root device ..." on reboot :-(.
What is the proper way to get out of this troubles?
    Thanks,
    Guntram

    Thanks!
I did so (there were several broken ELF messages) and I'm finally able to reboot my system.
However, some things still don't work. Gnome-Shell freezes after some short seconds after login...
    I'm getting
systemd-journald[127]: Failed to write entry (26 items, 660087 bytes) despite vacuuming, ignoring: Argument list too long
while booting and when going to a terminal session instead of gnome-shell.
Should I try to reinstall all packages?

  • Accessing /dev/video0 locks kernel tight

When I try to access a v4l2 device, the screen turns black and my kernel locks.  I have to hard reset to get the system back.  The box stops responding to pings, mouse pointer locks tight, screen turns back with flashing cursor in top left...
This code will lock up my machine:
    ffmpeg -s 320x240 -f video4linux2 -i /dev/video0 output.ogv
Confusingly, I can launch vlc and media->capture device, select video4linux2, and enter /dev/video0 in the video device name field.  That works.  It even streams video.  It's working right now.
    Here is my kernel.

I would appreciate some ideas.  How come vlc works but ffmpeg doesn't?  I've also tried ffmpeg2theora.  It behaves the same as ffmpeg.
Here is the output from "ffmpeg -version":

So far, no crashes after the downgrade today (3.3.4-1 -> 3.3.3-1).
Compiling today does not even result in any intense swapping activity.
    # sysctl vm.swappiness
    vm.swappiness = 60
Here is the peaking moment of swap utilization while compiling. I don't recall exactly what these numbers where yesterday.
    # free -m
total used free shared buffers cached
    Mem: 499 493 5 0 0 354
    -/+ buffers/cache: 137 361
    Swap: 486 83 402
    Thanks for the guidance.
[EDIT]: Things are very clearly different today. The kernel downgrade did it for me. I'll mark this topic [SOLVED]. Thanks a bunch.
[EDIT2]: The commenters at https://bugs.archlinux.org/task/29694 are offering details that may help someone here.

  • Set up Oracle 8.1.7 Client on Redhat 7.3

First of all, I want to thank the people who gave out the hints of downgrading Redhat from 7.x to 6.x.
The problem I had was run into by many people on this forum: the Oracle Universal Installer window just doesn't pop up.
In my case, I took out most of the packages manually in order to have a slim and healthy Linux platform. The Redhat 7.3 installation I have takes less than 250M. There are a X server, fvwm2 desktop, netscape 4, netscape 6, wu-ftp server, sshd, telnetd, gcc, make, autofs, and so on.
My purpose is to run Apache with Tomcat, using an OCI JDBC driver and an Oracle Client, to talk to an Oracle server at the back end. The Oracle 8.1.7 for Linux was downloaded from the OTN site and untarred to the hard drive. The strange thing I saw was, the 'runInstaller' doesn't get me the OUI window but consumed 99% of the CPU.
After a few hours of struggling and research, this is I believe what makes it work:
    1. As oracle user using 'bash' shell. Not 'sh'. Put all the needed enviornment variables into '.bash_profile' file, not the '.profile'. Redhat uses 'bash' as default shell. 'sh' in Redhat doesn't seem to behave as perfectly as in other Unix flavors, like Solaris, OpenBSD, FreeBSD, and so on.
    2. Make sure (or install manually) these RPMs:
    compat-glibc-6.2-2.1.3.2
    compat-libs-6.2-3
    compat-egcs-6.2-1.1.2.16
    compat-libstdc++-6.2-2.9.0.16
I doubt the last one is even not necessary.
    3. Put
    LD_ASSUME_KERNEL=2.2.5; export LD_ASSUME_KERNEL
in '.bash_profile'. Either make a new xterm or echo to make sure the value of $LD_ASSUME_KERNEL is '2.2.5'
And that's it! That's all it takes to get the Installer show up and work so nicely.
The reasons behind are: at the time the Oracle 8i rolling out, it's based on Linux kernel 2.2.5, not the 2.4.x in the Redhat 7.3 or SuSe 8.0. The 8i just doesn't run on Redhat 7.3 or SuSe 8.0 by nature, unless there is a backward compatibility smoothly working in between.
Oracle 8.1.7 comes with it's own JRE. On the Linux version of 8.1.7, I don't see a choice exist for the user to toggle between the packaged JRE and the JREs on the OS. In aother word, a backward compatibility (kernel downgrading) is needed to get the whole thing moving. There are no other choices. This JRE thing distracts people from looking for the real issue.
By the way, I did forget about Linux uses its own JDKs and JREs. But now I have jdk1.1.8 from ibm, 1.2.2 from blackdown, 1.3.1 from ... and so on. All these different versions of Java tools and environments are basicly for running some fancy features once 8i gets installed. Their lack doesn't stop 8i Installer from running so perfectly.
There is NOT a character mode for this 8.1.7 Installer.
As to now, I configured 'Net8' and was able to use 'sqlplus' to pull over data from a live server at work.
Thanks again to those who share their experiences and knowledge. Also hope this message will save others a couple of hours of hard trying. :-)
    Han Zhang

    Hello,
i have a question about your updates: you run a system with glibc 2.2? -> forget it!
i try to install 8.1.7 on RH7 and i get the same error-message, i downgrade to RH6.2 (orginal, without updates) and its work!
Have alook to the topics with RH7 problems or use RH6.2 without updates(glibc)

  • Cryptsetup is not working after upgrade to linux-3.14.1

Did someone forget to compile the xts module for the new kernel?
My /home is encrypted with aes, xts-plain64. And with kernel 3.14.1 i can't mount.
    I get:
[ 19.421463] device-mapper: table: 254:0: crypt: Error allocating crypto tfm
[ 19.421471] device-mapper: ioctl: error adding target to table
[ 19.465118] device-mapper: ioctl: device doesn't appear to be in
However on the kernel downgrade to 3.14-5 solved the problem.

On my laptop i use 3.14.1-1-ARCH together with aes-xts-plain64 and it works as before.
What is the output of this?

Well, the pithy answer would be to buy a computer from a vendor who supports free operating systems.
Of course, I own and love my DV4.
What does it mean?  Some BIOS implementations use areas of low memory without properly allocating it (letting the operating system know it is in use).  Windows just does not use that area of memory, and some vendors do a sloppy job in their software quality; it only has to work with Redmond code, so why fix it?
Linux is forced to implement a bunch of ridiculous hacks to work around low quality hardware and firmware.  You found one.  The kernel was watching that memory to see if it could be trusted.  Something changed that memory when nothing (in the kernel's view) should have touched it.  Since it changed, the kernel has taken note that that memory should not be trusted.  Kind of analogous to finding a bad block on a disk drive and subsequently ignoring it by adding it to a list of bad blocks.
So, aside from sucking it up because you lost some usable memory, you need do nothing.
EDIT: BTW, it probably means the new kernel is more stable.

  • [Solved] Several problems after big update

Hello. Yesterday i made a pacman -Syu that upgraded many packages, after rebooting, i found out that many things got broken, like the keyboard, that got a strange keymap and i can't change it, at least not by the regular ways. Chromium doesn't start, file-roller gives a Gconf error, LibreOffice says that every document that i try to open is protected from editing by a unknown user, video streaming websites doesn't buffer any video and Firefox gives this error "There is not enough room on the disk to save /tmp/DMgQyMeY.part" when downloading .srt files (.rar files are downloaded with no error, but... empty) and the login (going from the login window to fully loaded desktop) is really slow.
I have been looking in pacman's log for packages that can push arch into widespread malfunctions when failling, but i'm kind of lost.
    This is the log

already tried a kernel downgrade, and nothing. And i also tried downgrading xorg-server + xorg-common + evdev + fbdev + vesa and intel drivers... and the trackpad died. (re-updated and it's now ok)
This is not the first time that it happend. There was 2 "strikes" long ago with the same troubles, and one of them included an unconfigurable 600x800 resolution. Both times i didn't found out the cause and waited several weeks using windows until another full pacman -Syu upgrade fixed everything (yes... the coward way), but this time i need to fix it soon... and since it's turning into an habit, i want to know what to do the next time.
thats all, sorry for the long post. thanks.

No, pacman said something about a problem with some packages, so i said "no" when it asked if i wanted to update pacman first. Later, i made another update and pacman said that i should do a pacman-db-upgrade, and i did that.
Anyhow, the other times that i had this problems, there was no pacman update conflicts with other packages.

its spanish, usado = used and Dispon = Available
looks like / is actually full, or at least is readed as being full,  it might be the cause of firefox not downloading files and not buffering videos right? both are stored in / ?.
And the de-compressed tmp files goes to / right? What about LibreOffice? is there any tmp file for it?
So, how can i free space on / without messing with some important stuff?
And there are still issues with chromium not loading , keyboard miss-configuration and  GUI session manager not loading. Does / being full have something to do with it?

  • [SOLVED] libva-intel-driver 1.3.2-1 breaks hardware acceleration

    Hello,
I'm running Arch with XFCE on my Lenovo L540 (i5-4200M, HD4600) on the integrated full HD display and a second full HD screen attached with a mini-Displayport-DVI adaptor.
Since yesterday's system update my laptop screen randomly shows visual artifacts  (horizontal lines).
When I open Steam both monitors show multiple copies of the Steam window and finally the second monitor blanks.

    Section "Device"
    Identifier "Intel Graphics"
    Driver "intel"
    Option "TearFree" "true"
    Option "AccelMethod" "sna"
    EndSection
    But nothing changed.
Eventually only downgrading libva-intel-driver to Version 1.3.1-1 helped.
Is anyone experiencing a similar issue?
EDIT: The problem reoccured with libva-intel-driver 1.3.1-1. Seems like it isn't a problem of libva-intel-driver.
    Kernel downgrade also didn't help.

Nope, no problems here on either Ironlake or Haswell, using mpv and flash (via libvdpau-va-gl). Well, mpv tends to freeze sometimes on Ironlake, but that issue was already there with 1.3.1
I find it weird that libva-intel-driver is the cause for your problems, considering you're seeing issues even with non-video stuff. Are you sure it's libva-intel-driver and not the 3.14.6 -> 3.15.1 kernel upgrade?

  • [SOLVED] Connection problems on Atheros AR5001X+

Hi all. I've been having trouble with my internet connection. I think it happened after the last kernel upgrade.
I am using wicd and starting it with X. When I log in I get no connection at all and a message saying "No wireless networks found".
    Rescanning makes no difference.
The weird part is that connecting the cable gives me an entry for the wired network and rescanning makes all available wireless networks appear as they should.
I connect to my wireless network and then disconnect the cable and then everything is fine.
Usually anyways. Sometimes I get a "bad password" error.
Everything worked perfectly until a couple of days ago and I would like to avoid a kernel downgrade, since I've never done that before.
Another weird thing is that if I just connect my ethernet cable it doesn't connect automatically, even though that worked even before I installed X and wicd.
I've read this post https://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php?id=115136, but it didn't help much.
    Some info:

What I have tried: Using my normal ip instead of static, starting dhcpcd on boot as a daemon, using netcfg instead of wicd.
    When I run this
    wpa_supplicant -B -Dwext -i wlan0 -c /etc/wpa_supplicant.conf
I get disconnected from the network.
And when I when I run this
    dhcpcd wlan0
    I get a timeout error.
That's all the info I can think of right now. And the router is probably fine cause my windows partition and a macbook don't seem to be affected.

  • Colorful X, but no DE/WM/anything

Can't quite tell you when this happened (as it was some time ago -- I believe after a kernel update), but after a reboot, I login, try to bring up DWM through CDM -- get thrown into X where it decides to start cycling me through colors -- black, white, green, red, yellow, blue, some gradient colors, etc, until it finally loops back around. I tried downgrading the kernel, downgrading the nvidia drivers, and switching to nouveau (which gives me a lovely pure black screen) but to no avail.
I'm at a loss now -- did a fresh reinstall (I completely butchered my config files while blind-editing them -- different story, similarly related); and I'm still having the same problems. I backed up most of my config files -- including my Xorg.conf file -- from my previous install and pushed them back onto my colorful-X machine.
    Here's the Xorg.0.log: https://gist.github.com/913005
I'm probably missing something pretty simple here -- does anyone know what it is? I'm having DWM withdrawls. ^_^
MODS: If this isn't in the correct section, could you please move it there? Thanks
EDIT - Well, now I'm hanging on boot with "Waiting for UDev uevents to be processed". Fantastic.
EDIT2 - Fixed the UDev hang on boot. Lovely. Now back to this bigger problem.
EDIT3 - Guess I didn't fix the UDev hang on boot. Gotta look into that. Sporadic boots. >.<

Doing that as I type this message. How long should I leave it running? I'll be away for a good part of the day (8+ hours), so I'll leave it running for then.
(I didn't know they had memtest for GPU... I'll have to look for it.)
If it turns out to be a GPU problem, I'm screwed -- it's a Macbook Pro, out of warranty >.<

The only thing weird in the log file is the EDID data.  I would approach this by booting to a console and starting X with startx and see what happens when you avoid anything beyond the basic X windows
I'll do that after I get back from my classes today. I believe the Xorg log I posted was when I started with startx, but It could have been through CDM. I'll repost another just to make sure.
I'll get the information back as soon as I can.

  • [SOLVED]Lock screen in Gnome freezes X

Hi, everyone. When the screen locks on my laptop it freezes the entire X. It tries to dim the screen before the lock and in the middle of the process it freezes. The desktop stays "half visible". The mouse works, but Gnome doesn't react to anything. I need to enter the init 3 level and go back to 5. This is really annoying since it makes it impossible to work normally and I have to constantly think about not locking the screen.
This is my VGA controller according to lspci:
VGA compatible controller: Intel Corporation 2nd Generation Core Processor Family Integrated Graphics Controller (rev 09)
I tried to check for errors in .xssession-errors but it is impossible to find anything of importance there since it's full of davmail errors etc.
I've searched the forums but only found some issues regarding old kernel versions and I'm on the latest (3.4.4-2).
    Any ideas?

I'm experiencing the same issues, on a desktop, since this morning.
I have an NVIDIA Corporation GF108 [GeForce GT 440] (rev a1)  (as stated by lspci), and I have all the new updates for nouveau, X, and libdrm. I had my PC up for a long time and had to reboot, so I'm not sure which kernel I was running before I started having this issue, but I'm on 3.4.4-2-ARCH now. I suspect it was from the update from 3.3.8 to 3.4.4.
Is rolling the kernel back a good idea? Thanks for any help.
I'm not sure if kernel downgrade would help you since we still haven't identified the problem (we don't know if it's kernel related). But you could try and get back to us with the results...

  • [SOLVED] XFCE4.10 main panel and freeze problem

    Hello everyone.
I just have upgraded to XFCE4.10 and after rebooting (as the update included also a new kernel) the main panel is double its size just like the icons. I would have included a screenshot but here is where my second problem appears.
Whenever I try to open a window the system just freezes.
The strange thing is that when I try random things (checking 'Appearance' to see if my Oxygen theme wasn't working anymore with 4.10 or fixing the missing 'Separator' issue for correct window display - former freezed though after clicking on 'Accept') it works but the 'real' things (opening browser - both from applications menu or xfce shortcut panel - or Thunar) do not.
I also noted that when trying to save the 'Separator' fix when I hit the actions button to close the session I was directly just given that option instead of displaying the full menu of restart etc.
Should I consider this a new issue or something I have to setup in 4.10 in comparison to 4.8 where it work perfectly?
I am considering a kernel downgrade to see if it fixes the freeze issue though I doubt, if it does, it would relate to the panel size issue (or that 'only close session' allowance that I have just referred to). The reason for not having tried the downgrade yet is that the system apparently works fine as long as I do not open any window "for real", as said.
    Any suggestions?

%$$& Wrote everything nicely down and got logged out xD
Let's see how much I remember.
First of all, right now writing from my downgraded 3.3.3-1 kernel. I didn't succeed doing the downgrade while the 3.3.4-1 was loaded thus I had to do it using the change root method. That way I also discovered the, apparent, reason for the user modules fail at startup and the freezing at the login screen I reported in #3. Somehow the system was using the 3.3.3-1 kernel (I do not know when it installed successfully) but the 3.3.4-1 headers. Most likely I made a mistake somewhere during my previous change root attempt when fixing a *new* unable to find root device that popped up then.
As said, I have been able to downgrade using the Arch Install CD and through the change root method but received the warning,
    directory permissions differ on usr/src/linux-3.3.3-1-ARCH/
    filesystem: 700 package: 755
after the install/downgrade of each package (linux-docs, linux-headers and linux). Should I consider this a new problem? System works fine so far thus I am not sure about this.
Prior to successfully downgrading I tried to install the LTS kernel but wasn't successful with the 3.3.4-1 kernel loaded. Just like with the downgrade I tried using the change root method and could install it.
But despite updating grub's menu.lst accordingly I was receiving an 'unable to find root device message' which could not be fixed through the change root method just like with the 3.3.4-1 kernel (in case of the LTS one changing the final step from mkinitcpio -p linux to mkinitcpio -p linux-lts as far as I understand it). I might give it another try installing it in this working environment later on and report back with the results.
    @ConnorBehan
As I have just stated the user modules fail message and the login screen freeze were surely my fault but the error messages I referred to from the beginning with the 3.3.4-1 kernel were like these,
    .... = increasing numbers/disk sectors(?) (left/right)
    .... ext4_reserve_inode_write .... [ext4]
    .... ext4_reserve_inode_dirty .... [ext4]

    @foutrelis
You may be right with regard to the drive as it is a quite old laptop I am running Arch on. Now that you refer to the drive could the freeze/errors I reported to ConnorBehan be related to the tweaking of the vm.vfs_cache_pressure value I did?
I am just taking a wild guess myself comparing my ide drive to your ssd one. I had never had this kind of problem prior to 3.3.4-1. Just as if this kernel could not handle my tweak anymore (value is 50 and worked fine so far).
