Well, the pithy answer would be to buy a computer from a vendor who supports free operating systems.
Of course, I own and love my DV4.
What does it mean?  Some BIOS implementations use areas of low memory without properly allocating it (letting the operating system know it is in use).  Windows just does not use that area of memory, and some vendors do a sloppy job in their software quality; it only has to work with Redmond code, so why fix it?
Linux is forced to implement a bunch of ridiculous hacks to work around low quality hardware and firmware.  You found one.  The kernel was watching that memory to see if it could be trusted.  Something changed that memory when nothing (in the kernel's view) should have touched it.  Since it changed, the kernel has taken note that that memory should not be trusted.  Kind of analogous to finding a bad block on a disk drive and subsequently ignoring it by adding it to a list of bad blocks.
So, aside from sucking it up because you lost some usable memory, you need do nothing.
EDIT: BTW, it probably means the new kernel is more stable.

    What does "$C" show for stack?
    Typically, this is a little different from console output.

  • Corrupted video with Linux 3.8 and i915

    Ever since I upgraded my Linux Kernel to 3.8, I've been getting corrupted graphics after booting. I can get past the corruption if I add "nomodeset" kernel option, however this causes X to use a fallback driver instead of the Intel one.
    This is the dmesg logs with the default modesetting and corrupted graphics:

    Meanwhile, I encountered it seems to be a problem of the gdm in conjunction with the gpu and the intel driver - once again :-(
    Look at this thread: https://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php?id=161964
    Actually, I can start my DE (Gnome 3.8) manually with the following workaround:
    First, I disable gdm on my machine
    # systemctl disable gdm
    After bootin the machine, I'm logging in into the console
    $ startx
    stopping the X system again
    $ sudo systemctl start gdm
    logging in into the Gnome Shell.
    I need to start the X server first manually. Otherwise the gdm will hang again.

  • HP Envy 17 Bios Memory Corruption

    Dear all,
    Booting with linux kernel 2.6.34, with X86_RESERVE_LOW_64K and X86_CHECK_BIOS_CORRUPTION enabled, on my HP Envy 17 1010el with BIOS F13A, I'm getting "Memory corruption in low memory" from dmesg output at 60s:

    Could someone verify it and maybe provide an official fix.
    Thank you very much.

    Hi:
    Actually with the Intel Core i7-720QM processor, you can install 2 x 8 GB of PC3-10600 memory, even though the specs from HP, and even Intel state the max is 8 GB.
    There are several folks on this forum that have installed 16 GB of memory in notebooks with first generation core series quad processors.
    Here is one such post...
    http://h30434.www3.hp.com/t5/Hardware-Upgrades-Replacements/Will-Upgrading-Pavilion-dv8t-Memory-to-1...
    16 GB will not work in notebook with a first generation core series dual processor.
    Windows 7 Home Premium allows up to 16 GB of memory so that wouldn't be the problem.

    How can I correct this?
    Thanks in advance.
    Best regards,
    Andrey Demchenko.

    Thanks for the answers. The oci8.dll is uncommented naturally. Otherwise it would start up just fine, but I couldn't use the database functions.
    I got it working by installing 5.1.6, but replacing the oci8.dll with the one from the 5.1.0 -version. It's a very... desperate... solution, but at least it works.
    I'm gonna have to try to sell the idea of using the 10g client to our DBA. I don't think though, that he'll be very enthusiastic to set it up on our production servers. We'll see.

  • MFC CRecordset heap corruption detected at Close()

    I recently upgraded my operating system from Windows XP to Windows 7 SP1 64 bit. We are using Visual Studio 2005/2008  Professional Edition and Oracle Database 11g Enterprise Edition Release 11.2.0.2.0 - 64bit Production.
    When I try to execute this code I am getting the below exceptions.
    try {
      CDatabase *pDatabase = CDatabaseConnection::getDatabaseConnectionProcessLog();
      ORSProcessLog rsProcessLog(pDatabase);
      CString strFilter = _T("SELECT PROCESS_ID, MESSAGE FROM OP_PROCESS_LOG");

    In 32- bit Debug version I get a message box at rsProcessLog.Close(); with the below text
    Debug Error
    Program: ......\Test.exe

    (Please Retry to debug the application)
    In 32- bit Release version I get a message box at rsProcessLog.Close(); with the below text
    Windows has triggered a breakpoint in Test.exe
    This may be due to a corruption of the heap, which indicates a bug in Test.exe or any of the DLLS it has loaded.
    This may also be due to the user pressing F12 while Test.exe has focus.
    The output window may have more diagnostic information.
    The above code was a working code in Windows XP with the rest of the env remaining the same and it continues to run in Windows XP but not in Windows 7. Any help will be greatly appreciated.

    I installed the Patch using OPatch utility. After the installation I am still getting the "HEAP CORRUPTION DETECTED.." error. Please Help.

  • Memory Error Detected At Startup

    After a couple days of frustration, I think I figured out why my mac becomes hung up at the grey screen with the apple in the center everytime I attempt to boot. As a quick summary, I went to upgrade quicktime and after the install, I was prompted to restart and ever since then, I was not able to get the machine to boot up. I was out of my mind fearing the HD and all of my contents went to the grave.
    What I learned is that my memory, I think, has gone bad. I ran the hardware test and the message in the test results states that an error was detected at start up with the Memory. It says "2048 S0DIMM0/j25LOWER" as part of the error message...so I am geussing that meand the card in the the second slot crapped out on me. And after reading several threads, it seems pretty consistent with many other complaints who have this model and the same problem with the second memory slot.
    Anyways, I also heard my logic board now also be ruined as a result of corrupt memory? Eureka! I haven't gotten that far to know for sure, but I thought I would post this thread to see if what I described has happened to others and what they did to resolve.
    I have never opened up a powerbook before and changed / added memory, so I am walking into unknown territory. I was a PC user for many years prior to my powerbook and, unlike the mac, was pretty comfortable tinkering inside a PC. i am okay with jumping inside, but want to make sure I get some inside tips before an even potentially larger disaster!
    So, my questions are:
    1. Based off of the error message described above, is it the lower slot that is corrupt and do I simply remove the LOWER slot (they are two slots each with 256 mb)
    2. If I do that, will it run too too slowly with only 256MB on the first slot that it's not worth using?
    3. Should I just buy 1gig of memory and remove both 256 mb's from each slot?
    4. Will this incident corrupt my HD??
    5. What/where is the best memory card to buy at the most competitve price?
    Also, WHY WHY WHY did this happen?? My memory card on my PC lasted forever...what is going on here? This memory was included with the powerbook from the manufacturer.

    Hello!HERE is a good place to buy memory. It's unlikely that the MB is damaged and it is possible the ram chip has jarred loose. I'd probably try reseating it and if it still fails to work remove it as they do sometimes go bad. The link above may also have a video on changing the ram if you'll look under the tech tab on the site. 256 MB will be anemic on OSX so you'll likely want to replace the chip if it's indeed bad. Tom

  • Install PT8.53 with Linux Issue: Jolt client (ip address 192.168.196.102) does not have proper application password

    Folks,
    Hello.
    I am installing PeopleTools 8.53 with Oracle Database Server 11gR1 and OS Oracle Linux 5.10.
    Data Mover Bootstrap and Application Designer can log into Database instance successfully. My procedure to run PIA is below:
    Step 1: start Oracle Database Server and LISTENR is listening.
    Step 2: start Application Server ./psadmin and 8 processes are started.
    Step 3: start WebLogic Server PIA /opt/PT8.53/webserv/PT853/bin/startPIA.sh
    In Browser, http://192.168.196.102:8000/ps/signon.html comes up successfully. But when sign in using UserID PSADMIN and password "myname", I get the error message in Browser as below:
    The application server is down at this time.
    CHECK APPSERVER LOGS. THE SITE BOOTED WITH INTERNAL DEFAULT SETTINGS, BECAUSE OF: bea.jolt.ServiceException: Invalid Session
    We've detected that your operating system is not supported by this website. For best results, use one of the following operating systems:

    I think the error is indicated in TUXLOG file "ERROR: Jolt client (ip address 192.168.196.102) does not have proper application password". The application password "myname" in Browser http://192.168.196.102:8000/ps/signon.html page is not working. I use the same password "myname" to login Data Mover Bootstrap mode, Application Designer, and Application Server psadmin configuration successfully. I have tried a few other passwords in Browser http://192.168.196.102:8000/ps/signon.html page but not working.
    My question is:
    How to solve Sign In issue on http://192.168.196.102:8000/ps/signon.html that is "ERROR: Jolt client (ip address 192.168.196.102) does not have proper application password" ?
    Thanks.

    Dear Nicolas,
    Hello. I have used the same password for "DomainConnectPswd" in the file Configuration.properties with that for Application Server setting. Eventually, UserID PSADMIN sign in http://192.168.196.102:8000/ps/signon.html successfully. PeopleTools 8.53 runs correctly in Browser.
    It seems that whether upgrade Oracle Linux 5.0 to the latest 5.10 does not have effect !
    I am very grateful to your great help for this installation of PT8.53 with Linux and Oracle Database !

    I'm getting a similar crash message when I run su.  It errs this way only the first time I run it, however.  The second su works:

  • IPhone SDK 2.2 memory corruption

    Hello. I'm working on an application for iPhone SDK 2.2 and seem to be having weird memory corruption problems. Not necessarily leaks because using Instruments shows my memory stamp never going above about 1.8 megs. The nature of the app is a database of animals so I'm constantly loading and unloading sounds and images. None of the objects are very large (at most I'll have 4 800k pngs loaded at once) and I've checked and rechecked my alloc/retain/release and everything is in order (hence no memory usage increase). However...after using the application for a while I'll notice strange behavior. For example:
    1) we have a UILabel as the title for each page. After a while the font size of this will change.
    2) I have several screens with a subclassed UIScrollView where images are loaded and then added to. The problem shows itself here by the images not showing up. there's no crash, stepping through the debugger shows that the image loads up fine, it's just that the image is not there.
    3) I have a UILabel at the top of an animal description screen, which in the nib file is called "Animal Name" by default. This will change to show "Animal Name" at the top.
    I've removed all audio in our latest build so that isn't the problem. What I'm starting to suspect is that altering anything defined in a nib file will cause corruption. For example, the UIScrollView is defined in the nib file, and I constantly am reassigning the contents of that with a UIImageView. This UIImageView is handled within the subview class like :
    UIImageView *imgView = [[UIImageView alloc] initWithImage: [ UIImage imageWithContentsOfFile:[[NSBundle mainBundle ] pathForResource:imageToLoad ofType:@"png" ]] ];
    imgView.tag = 50;
    [self addSubview:imgView ];
    [ imgView release ];
    Then later when moving away from the screen I'll find that view's tag and remove it from the superview (since addSubView increases the retain count, the alloc+addSubView is cancelled by release+removeFromSuperView)
    I can't explain why titles that are never changed would be affected, but it must somehow be related. What I'm wondering is: are there any known issues involving modification of the contents of objects defined in Nib files? Perhaps the memory allocated when initWithNibName is restrained, then any modification of objects allocated within it can cause corruption. I'm starting to think I should just alloc and free anything modified in code and skip using nib files altogether (I reset the text on buttons for example). If this is a known issue please let me know. I'll give you more information if I can.
    Thank you

    Just download the huge SDK package and install. No need to uninstall the old SDK.

  • Analysing SAP Java Memory Usage in Unix/Linux

    Hi,
    I need to analyze the SAP Java memory usage of Unix /Linux machine..NW 7.0
    Please guide with the commands and steps..complete prcedure.
    Based on it I should decide whether to create a new server node (or) increasing heap size
    Thanks in advance

    Hi,
    Do you have performance problems?
    How many CPU's are in the server?
    Did you check Log Configuration for delays or errors?
    Did you tune any exisiting parameters?
    You can add the nodes only if there is performance problems. You may think of adding one node to start with
    Proper number of server nodes within an instance:
    u2013 #ServerNodes = availableMemory / (JavaHeapPermSpaceStack)
    You can calculate the server nodes based on below formula
    No. of server Node = (RAM you want to assign or available RAM in GB)/2.5 ============> for 64-bit system
    No. of server Node = (RAM you want to assign or available RAM in GB)/1.5 ============> for 32-bit system
    Hence as per above discussion, we should go with 5 server nodes means,
    5 = RAM/2.5 (Assuming you are on 64-bit platform)
    i.e. RAM = 12.5 GB

  • Corrupt blocks with RH6.2 and 8.1.7

    Hi
    We have following problem: while running Oracle 8.1.7 on a Compqa DL580 with Smartarray controller 5304 on RedHat 6.2 system we encounter corrupt data blocks after a certain time.
    We can see corrupt data blocks e.g after reboot, but also during normal operation. This happens again and again after some weeks after we had reinstalled the database. Oracle support lead us to install RH6.2 (after having the problems on 7.1), but it crashed again ...
    Any tips?
    System details:
    kernel 2.2.19-6.2.7
    glibc 2.1.3-22
    mount 2.10r-0.6.x
    fs.file-max=8192 (in /etc/sysctl.conf)
    Dietmar

    Hi
    I work with linux RH (6.2, 7.0, 7.1) and 8i (8.1.5 since 8.1.7.0.1) and 9i and I only two times I find just a block corruption warning, but database keeps working fine.
    This data corruption affects only Oracle? You can turn extra CRC check into oracle data blocks (of course it slows all process ;)
    Maybe the linux RAID drivers have some bug, a simple solution is to install one datafile of the tablespace in a nother disk (IDE for example) and check if this datafile is corrupted too.
    Anyway just make a simple script (using dd or random) or C, Perl.. program that writes/reads intensively (one week ir more) "1" on a big file (at least 1G) and check if you get some error. Oracle just calls system I/O, so if one crashes, other must too.
    A10!

  • HEAVY Problems with Linux x86_64 on K8T Neo

    Hello, Community!
    I experience *HEAVY* Problems with Linux on my MSI K8T Neo (FSR). Since the customer support of the german dependancy seems to ignore my call for help I'm in good hope that maybe you can help me out or give me some useful advise.
    First some Hardware Specs of my system:
    MSI K8T Neo FSR, Rev 1.1, BIOS 1.5
    AMD Athlon 64 3000+
    3x 512MB Kingston DDR400
    Enermax EG365P-VE (350W) PSU (3.3V/5V 185W Combinded)
    MSI GeForce FX5200 TDR 128
    Adaptec ATA RAID AAR1200A (HPT370A) in PCI Slot 3
    Hauppauge WinTV PCI in PCI Slot 5
    Maxtor 4K040H2 (40GB) as Primary Master
    JLMS XJ-HD166S DVD-ROM as Primary Slave
    LiteOn LDW-411S DVD+/-RW as Secondary Master
    LiteOn LTR-52327S CD-RW as Secondary Slave
    2x Maxtor 6Y060L0 (60GB) on HPT370A as Primary Master/Slave
    Seagate ST380020A (80GB) on HPT370A as Secondary Master
    Maxtor 32049U3 on HPT370A as Secondary Slave
    KeyTronic KT2001 USB Keyboard
    Microsoft Optical Wheel Mouse Blue USB
    I've downloaded Fedora Core 1 x86_64 as well as the lately released Fedora Core 2 test 3 x86_64 distribution. Both CD sets have been burnt ok.
    If I try to install Core 1 x86_64 (Kernel 2.4.22-1.2179) the kernel crashes with a "attempted to kill idle task" panic. As far as I've learned the workaround is to give idle=poll as kernel parameter. This resolves the kernel panic, but the installer randomly crashes with segfaults at a random stage; sometimes while loading anaconda, sometimes during package install.
    If I try to install Core2 test 3 x86_64 (Kernel 2.6.5) I get a, completely new, error message while the kernel does the PCI Scan:
    ******* Your BIOS seems to not contain a fix for K8 errata #93
    ******* Working around it, but it may cause SEGVs or burn power
    ******* Please consider a BIOS update
    ******* Disabling USB legacy in the BIOS may also help
    I removed my USB keyboard, connected a PS/2 keyboard, disabled to USB Legacy option (I need it enabled in order to use Ghost) in the BIOS and booted again.
    The error message is gone now, but as in Core 1 the installer still crashes randomly with segfaults. I'm still unable to go all the way through the installation routine.
    I even tried to install Fedora Core 1 "i386": again there are segfaults during install.
    Contrary to the problems I experience while trying to install Linux my Windows XP (32-Bit), as well as a test installation of Windows XP 64-Bit, run like a charm without any problems. Strange but true.
    Since I already read trough several posts in this forum I already tried running my system with memory sticks from another manufacturers as well as with a more powerful PSU. I even removed my tv-card and raid-controller.
    Nogo - Linux still crashes randomly and Windows still works without any flaws.
    Has anyone a clue what I can/must do to successfully install Linux?
    Might it be that the BIOS has some flaws that might cause the problems?
    Has anyone managed to install Linux (what distribution) on this Mainboard?
    I would greatly appreciate any help. If you need to know something I haven't provided here please feel free to ask. I'll answer ASAP.
    Thank you in advance.
    P.S.: The system is *NOT* overclocked in any way.

    And now even the last problem is solved ...
    Since I was successful in installing a basic Gentoo system but still failed to install Fedora I reflashed BIOS 1.5. This time I cleared the CMOS by unplugging the PSU, setting the jumper and removing the backup battery.
    Yesterday I only flashed it with the /a switch, which should have cleared the CMOS as well - so far for the theory. However, it once went fine as I upgraded from BIOS 1.1 to 1.4.
    After setting up the BIOS options again I gave it another try and booted from Fedora (Core 2 test 3) install CD: No more complains about the CPU errata, although USB legacy is enabled, and I even went through the installation without any problems.
    It seems as I will stick with Gentoo as my primary distribution since the kernel makes a more "mature" impression than the one from Fedora (i.e. the K8 PowerNOW! Driver seems to be missing in Fedora's Kernel 2.6.5).
    By using an spare Athlon XP Mainboard I worked out that only one of my three Kingston memory sticks had errors - I'm going to replace the faulty stick tomorrow.
    Now for the conclusio:
    Thanks, especially you JLP, for helping me with my issue. Without the advise to use Gentoo, and the included MemTest86, I wouldn't have been able to track down the error to a faulty memory stick that fast since Windows always ran fine.
