Kernel Panic 4MEM/1/40000000: 0x7bb1a790

Hello,
My computer is an Intel Imac that is about 6 months old.
Over the last several weeks my Intel Imac has been experiencing problems. It started with a few programs closing unexpectingly every other day. It climaxed the other day with programs crashes right after opening and finally kernel panics (the black screen that comes over the screen with all the different languages saying to restart the computer).
I ran the Hardware Test and got the error message:
4MEM/1/40000000: 0x7bb1a790
I can't even start my computer without it going to the black screen after 30 seconds.
After researching this it seems I have some sort of hardware problem that is pretty serious. I was wondering if anybody knows the specifics of this particular error message I recieved. Can factory RAM just malfuction out of nowhere?
Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks for your time,
Pug
Imac   Mac OS X (10.4.8)

It's a bad RAM error. You need to take the computer to an Apple service center to either repair the computer or replace defective RAM.
Any RAM can malfunction out of nowhere. However, the error may not be due to defective RAM. It could also be due to other hardware failure on the logic board such as the memory controller.

  • 4MEM/8/40000000 + Kernel Panics

I got the above error while running a hardware scan on my MacBook Pro (Late 2011, Early 2012). I've also been having some kernel panics for a couple of months now.
From past research, I think I've got an error with my memory but the question is: What's wrong with my memory and how can I fix this issue? Also, how did this problem come about in the first place?
    Thanks.

the ram may be defective, who knows how it happened.  If you live near an apple store, they can swap your ram for known good ram that they have too see if they can isolate that it is the ram.

  • Kernel panics & grey debug screen at startup

Tiger (10.4.10) on a 2 GHz Mac mini (Intel) and Airport as well as IPv6 disabled.
Not sure which torrent client I installed first but I think it was Transmission and everything was fine. Then I installed Azureus on the advise of a friend and started getting kernel panics. Switched back to Transmission and KPs continued. Soon I started getting them with just running Safari or even Firefox.
Next there was a Mac OS upgrade (10.4.11 and a couple other things) and the machine would not even start up anymore. Always got a grey debug screen with msg to press powerbutton.
Tried doing an archive and install and it failed twice.
Tried doing a clean install (OS only) on external 30GB USB 2.0 HD and it failed as well.
Apple Support and Apple store were clueless.
At least the genius was able to boot with their troubleshooting HD and run Disk Warrior which found a couple minor issues and I was able to see that my data was stull there. Unfortunately the 30gb HD was too small to copy my user folder (86gb).
Went and bought an external 320gb firewire disk and tried to do a clean install and it failed.
Called Apple again and suspected bad DVD media. They sent replacement disks and they failed as well.
Ran Apple Hardware Test and it found bad memory (?) with 2x 1GB Corsair sticks. I even tried them individually. That memory has worked since August 2007 until I started seeing the kernel panics in December. What are the odds of both SODIMMs going bad at the same time ? Could a bad app cause memory to go bad ? I doubt it.
with 2 GB Corsair memory: 4MEM/4/40000000:2c02fd60
Swapped original 2x 512 MB Apple sticks in and AHT found another error.
with 1 GB Apple memory: 4SNS/1/40000000:TAOP
From other forum posts I found that 4MEM usually indicates a memory or system board issue while 4SNS seems to indicate a sensor issue, but that could have been due to unplugged (termal?) cable in front of mini due to the need to swap memory in and out for testing.
    What gives ?
I was however, able to install now on external FW disk and copy my user folder to it as well.
So this indicates a problem with 3rd party mem but there may be something else wrong with mini system board or Apple mem as well.

    ::UPDATE::
Okay, I eventually got my iMac to start up successfully, without crashing after logging in. But I still thought there was something wrong so I booted from the Apple Hardware Test CD that came with my computer and I got yet ANOTHER Kernel Panic! Here is what it said:

Does anyone have any suggestions based on the new kernel panic message?

  • Hi! I have a kernel panic problem on my macbook pro! Please help me!!!

Hi! At the Apple store they changed my harddisk twice, but they didn't solve my problem.. Every time I try to install applications or to update the software, the kernel panic message appears (you need to restart your computer..etc) and I don't know what to do! I have already sent the signal to apple and verified permissions and when I did the hardware test, it appeared that i have a 4MEM/1/40000000:0xa9facf98 error...
this is the problem when I restart my computer:

    PLEASE HELP ME!!

The Hardware Test detected a RAM problem.  Take out the chips and make certain that the connections are clean and reinstall them.  Make certain that they are well seated.
If the problem occurs again, test with one chip at a time.  Also swap bays if necessary.
Please indicate if you have installed new RAM and if so what brand and the specifications.
    Ciao.

  • Kernel Panic In Mac OS 10.6.5

Okay, I updated to Mac OS 10.6.5 yesterday and all seemed well. Today I had my somewhat usual Applications open (iChat, Mail, Safari, iTunes, Photoshop, Dashcode, and Final Cut Express Exporting) and when I went to save the Photoshop image it froze. After thinking only photoshop froze i tried to do the command, option, escape command to bring up the force quit menu but realized it wouldn't open. I tried to go to the Apple menu but when I dragged my mouse off of the Photoshop window I realized finder had a beachball also. Even the menu bar and dock. No response from Exposé either. After about 5 minutes of everything just frozen it finally kernel panicked. When I rebooted the system it took about 5 minutes to boot which is long. After it booted I went to console and looked at the log file. This is what it says:
    +panic(cpu 1 caller 0x28f16b): "pmapflushtlbs() timeout: "P"cpuanic(Cin 0)o res oUn to entspousiv,e promesaps+
Is this a serious issue? Last time I had a kernel panic back in January 2010 my hard drive needed to be replaced.
    Thanks,
    [Bryan W.|http://bryanw0104.tk]

    Hi all
Today I found my first Kernel Panic. My MBP 13" came with the stock standard 4GB DDR3 memory. I upgraded the memory to Corsair DDR3 - 2x 4GB modules. All has been going fine, until today I brought the computer out of sleep model and suddenly I get the Kernel Panic box for the first time. I ran multiple diagnostics with the power button and Command keys, etc but nothing seem to fix it. I got home ran the Diagnostic disc and within a few seconds I got this message:
Alert! Apple Hardware Test has detected an error. 4MEM/1/40000000 0xa9f73618. I then swapped the RAM that was in that slot with another of the same - re-ran the diagnostic no issues. Put the original module back in and the error re-appeared. Suffice to say this indicates one of the memory modules is faulty. In now running on 4GB and will be sending the faulty module back under its lifetime warranty.

  • 17" Intel iMac Kernel Panic, Freezing at Grey Screen and Beeping!

    Hi there,
I have a new 17" Intel iMac (Intel Core 2 Duo 2 GHz, 250 GB, 1GB Memory with OS X 10.4.8) that keeps getting those "You need to restart your computer. Hold down the Power button for several seconds or press the Restart button." messages.
It all started on Sunday when I tried to wake the computer (the computer went on Sleep by itself) and got that message so I restarted the computer but it froze on the grey screen (even before I got the Apple) and it beeped 3 times and then the light on front just kept blinking 3 times. I finally was able to erase and re-install OS X and everything was fine until I left the computer for a while, it went to sleep again, and then the message came back. I restarted and it seems to be fine but I'm worried the beeping and freezing will come back.
The first time this happened, I didn't know enough to "log" the kernel panics but I do know that I deleted a lot of the applications (iWeb, Garage Band, etc.) that I didn't need and fidged with the Share folder in the Users folder. I use a Flash Drive a lot and always left it connected to the keyboard's USB drive. Also leave my iPod Nano connected. After I reinstalled everything, I only deleted the Garage Band demos, installed and deleted the Firefox 2.0 and Opera (wanted to just stick with Firefox 1.0) applications. Only used the Flash Drive a little and haven't connected my iPod on yet. Trying to isolate the problem. I can't remember doing anything else.
Here's the log from the latest kernel panic:

I don't know what this part is about because I don't have a Printer hooked up to the computer.
The only other thing I can think of is I also installed WireTap and StuffIt before the initial crashing. I heard StuffIt was causing problems on some Intel Macs. Also changed a lot of the icons and changed the icon for Preview. I "verified" my hard drive and "verified and repaired the disk permissions" (I'm not that knowledgeable about computers let alone Macs). I also checked my hardware by pressing D while the grey CD OS X was running and get this:
    4MEME/4/40000000: 2F244040
usually during the initial testing but when I restart and try it again, it's fine.
Well, that's all I can think of. Any thoughts?
    Thanks a lot!

Thanks for the reply and links!
After the first problems, I re-seated the RAMs. Does this mean I have to buy new memory? This is a pretty new iMac, bought it in May and have only been using it for maybe two months. Haven't done a whole lot with it but I usually keep a lot of programs open at the same time. I have Adobe CS3 installed too and it says it needs at least 1 GB of memory. I've heard people saying it's best to have as much RAM (this Mac can only take up to 3GB) when using those programs. Maybe it's getting too heavy? Should I only keep one program open at a time? Also, which part of my post indicated that it was memory problems? What the "panic.log" stated or that "4MEME/4/40000000: 2F244040" stuff? Anything else I can do to not let this happen again?
    Thanks again!

  • Bluetooth Kernel panic remains in Lion

Very pleased with Lion; but still after only 3 hours, I got a bluetooth kernel panic. Fixed with a restart; but I thought that issue would be fixed by now.
Seems when Headphone batteries get low and you try to reconnect to bluetooth on the mac, sometimes; it confuses the system and voila; kernel panic.
Whats the deal here? No way to prevent these short of always charging the headphones?

Thank you all for your responses and suggestions. About of the details of what causes the Kernel Panics are indifferent, often happens when I'm browsing in safari or chrome, or when I'm retouching images in Aperture, in short, no pattern that causes this.
Take suggestions from various topics and told me to make a Apple Hardware Test and to perform advanced test gave me such errors:
    4MEM/4/40000000: 100080
    4MEM/1/40000000: 4000c380
    4MEM/1/40000000: 4181dc0
    4MEM/1/40000000: 8666ac0, etc, etc, etc
20 test with 20 error of the same type.
So far I have read indicate that I should try uninstalling each RAM module to give to this failing, or failing that they might be misplaced. I'm right? or there is any additional solution?.

  • Kernel Panic on iMac Intel Core 2 Duo

Hi there - my iMac is a little over a year old and yesterday started generating a "your system needs to be restarted" type of message following what looked like a gray blind scrolling down the screen.
I've checked the logs and can see the following errors:
    2009-08-27-211340.panic:

I also ran the hardware test and got the following error code:

Does anyone know what this means? I've tried searching for an answer but to no avail...

Just tried loading up iPhoto and got that "restart your system" message again and the gray scrolling screen. Error report says

Does this say anything different to the previous message? If it's still a RAM issue, I've now sussed how to replace it (unscrew the RAM dock underneath the screen) but don't want to buy new RAM unless I have to...!

  • Experiencing Recurring Kernel Panic

So I've been experiencing recurring kernel panics for at least a month now and I seem to have narrowed down the issue to the RAM. Now I'm just not sure whether it's corrupt kernel files associated with the RAM or the actual hardware itself.
I've run the extended apple hardware test and the error message I recieve (within 5 seconds) is that the error is with the file 4MEM/1/40000000:0x84938218
I've downloaded memtest and run that within terminal. Funny thing about that is as soon as I type "memtest all" my macbook kernel panics almost immediately. Something about the "memory lock-up" phase".
Other than that my computer works fine as long as I don't run too many applications at once. Often times video streaming or opening too many tabs in a web browser will do it. And you can forget about running games that will kernel panic almost immediately.
Oh yeah and here's an example of the logs I've been getting. It's not the most recent but they all say the same thing-I've checked.

So that sums up my problem basically. Specs should be posted at the bottom of the panic log. I'm just wondering is this something I'm going to have to go to an apple store to have them fix? Or can I restore the corrupt files myself? Am I going to have to install brand new RAM?
Please let me know if more info is needed and thanks in advance for any help.

So get new RAM, or have Apple repalce it under warranty.
If it occurs again it's likely the logicboard.

  • 2011 MBP with odd Kernel Panic?

Hey guys, my system had a weird kernel panic that I've been searching for solutions on and finding little.  In the quest to NOT have to take it to Apple, I thought I'd ask the wise minds of NBR if they might have an idea what could have caused the following panic:

    =============================
Open, running applications: Mail, Fidelia (music), Firefox, Reeder, Dreamweaver, Photoshop.  At the time of the freeze, the display was put to sleep via Expose active corner.  When I tried to move the mouse to wake the display again, nothing happened and I heard the song that was playing in Fidelia stuttering in place.  FWIW, I've put my laptop to sleep this same way with these same applications running regularly for 6 consecutive days without any issues.  That would make it extremely hard to reproduce.
I find it odd that the IOStorageFamily extension may be involved.  The only thing plugged into USB was my bluetooth headset, which was charging.  It is not synchronized with the laptop...it was just charging.  The mention of WindowServer is less surprising, as I've read that Expose/Spaces usage can impact that.
It's possible that the parallels kexts or paragon kext are related...but really, those are the same drivers I used for almost a year on my 2010 MBP without ever experiencing this kind of issue.  And Parallels was not running either.  Paragon NTFS is always running.
I'm really pretty new to this kind of trouble-shooting, so if anyone has thoughts or input, it would be greatly appreciated.
    Thanks!

Ok, so I ran the Apple Hardware Test (I needed to press and hold Option (alt) + D on startup, not ONLY D, which the apple KB stated) and the result was pretty clear:
"AHT found the following problem: 4MEM/60/40000000: 0x8329b798"
According to other discussions on the forum, this is, as Linc Davis stated, a problem with the RAM.
So, how do I reinstall the original RAM? Is this something that you can do by yourself? My Apple Care has expired, but I might have som guarantee left from the store where I bought my computer.
    Thanks for the help!

  • ERROR: 4MEM/1/40000000: 328493f0

    something wrong with your ram.

  • I get this error when i run diagnostic 4MEM/9/40000000 : 0x7f561d90

    MacBook Pro 13-inch, Mid 2012,
    2.5 GHz Intel Core i5

My computer started shutting down.  error message stated Your computer restarted because of a problem.  Press any key.
I get this error when i run diagnostic 4MEM/9/40000000 : 0x7f561d90 but can't find the error code reference.

Check to see if your MBP has a kernel panic report.  If so use these instructions and post it:

    Ciao.

  • 4MEM/1/40000000: error. What is it?

My macbook just came back from assistence after 2 months and 10 days. They'd replaced the logical board and the battery. Everything was fine until I updated the Mac OX, then 10 minutes after the macbook just froze, like a kernel panic. Since then, the macbook freezes every 30 minutes.
I've run the diagnostic disc and it acused the 4MEM/1/40000000: error.
Did anyone have the same problem? What is this problem? Memory?
    Thanks

How can I replace Ram? The memory chip was secure, but then it would only got to the black screen bad system call, and yes started talking about Kernels. So, my brother and I took it back to the day I got it, erased hard drive, but it would not reinstall the starter CD's that came with it. Instead it would get to about 20% and ask us to restart it, it did this continously. Is my hard drive bad? So basically I have a expensive paper weight now, I lost my bookmarks, and saved mail. Thankfully I did backup my college files, and pictures.

  • Apple Hardware Test error message: 4MEM/9/40000000: 0x79093f90 on 15" retina 2012

    hello.
I am having issues with my 15inch retina mac 2012. Some apps for example safari crash every once in a while. Some times i get the grey screen of death.
My configuration is: CTO. 2.6 GHz Intel core i7 with 16 GB 1600 MHz DDR3 and 512GB flash memory.
I have recently replaced my screen as it was with burn in problems.
I tried to install Yosemite but failed several times. Just got the 10.9.5 Mavericks going again.
I ran the apple hardware test and got FAIL!
The error code read as follows: 4MEM/9/40000000: 0x79093f90
What do i do now? I am out of warranty and i can't upgrade to the new software.
I keep on having app crashes. I keep on sending reports to apple and there is no response.
Who should i hold responsible for hiding that there was a problem with my machine?
My warranty recently expired but i had the problems prior and i figured that if there was no response that maybe one day better software would fix app crashing.
Please suggest a course of action other than replacing main board with ram and cpu (too expensive).
    Thank you in advance
    Kris

Thank you for the quick reply
I live in Bulgaria (eastern Europe) so no apple store here no geniuses either
This is the content of the most recent kernel panic log file.
I hope it is of some use.
