Kernel Panic happening 3/4 times a day.

Work picked me up a Macbook Pro the other week (second hand) the previous owner was one of our clients who dealt with video production, the Macbook was working perfectly fine up until an upgrade to Lion from Appstore which started the issue below:
I have been getting some kernel panics on a 3/4 a day basis (macbook completely freezes - with zero response, only solution is to hard reset) and all the logs have been exactly the same, done a google search but not found anyone who has been able to get a definitive issue from the same error.
I formatted, installed new RAM and downgraded to Snow Leopard to see if i can lose any of these issues but had zero luck.
Here is the log:

Can anyone decipher anything from this as I am using this as a work laptop and its starting to get frustrating.

I formatted, installed new RAM and downgraded to Snow Leopard to see if i can lose any of these issues but had zero luck.
Nothing obvious to me in that log.
Try smc and pram reset.
Run disk utility to repair/verify your boot drive.  Did you get the original installer dvd's when you got that machine?  If so you should boot from it and run DU from there.
Also if you have the installer dvd's run Apple Hardware Test (2nd installer dvd) to checkout the machine.
You said you "formatted new ram".  Do you really mean ram (memory) or are you confusing the term with your hard drive since you said "formatting"?  You don't format ram.
With respect to ram if you don't have Apple Hardware Test then run rember to check the ram.
If you really meant "ram" is it possible to put back the original ram?  Where did you get the new ram?  Is it certified to apple specs?

  • Kernel Panic Happened On Newly Brought 15-inch (i7 model) Macbook Pro

Kernel panic happened twice since I using my newly brought Macbook Pro for a few days. I hope someone or apple staff can help. This is very annoying and I get stuck on my work because of this. I going thru several generation of macs already and I hope I will not feel disappointed about the latest one...
I'm working on music so the major application I'm running are Logic/Protools/Native Instrument Software/East West Software. I didn't install any third-party hardware device (expect using external HD for storage) and this is my machine config:

Hi all fellows. First of all thanks for your reply!
I'm having the newest model as well (i.e. running OS 10.6.5) with upgraded i7 to 2.8G. I didn't change or added any RAM so it just running with the factory one. And of course I didn't do anything on hardware installation/replacement as well (just USB/Firewire device which for sure I tried to unplug all and see if problem persist). I run the EXTENDED Apple Hardware Test already and it found no problem...
Like all user and apple suggested I update everything from software update and also the EFI firmware which apple say it making issue on freezing system (according to the list from apple http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1237 I don't actually need to do so but I just download and run the installer). I tried to run the disk utilities and it report problem. So I start up the MBP from installation disk and run disk utilities to repair it. It said repaired successfully and I verify the disk again and it report "appear to be OK". However, kernel panic again...
I'm wondering if it something related to safari too! Since for the 2 kernel panic I experience (in 3 days use of a brand new MBP) it react instantly when I browse that website. And it happen after I installed the latest version of FLASH player (version 10). Sure I have installed quite a number of application as well Logic/Protools/NI Software/East West Software...etc but I have the exactly same set of application on my Macbook (intel core 2 duo 2008 black model with OS 10.5.8) and it so fine and solid thru the years...
I'm not a mac expert but it sounds like something goes wrong with compatibilities between application and the latest OS. I'm not planned to do clean reinstall or exchange for a new machine since the problem may persist if my guessing is right. And I'm in middle of my work so I can't bare spend a few days to setup everything again...
What I going to do now is backup the whole system and projects. Try to buy and run a more powerful disk repair application and rebuild the disk. Hope it works for the moment...wish me luck...

  • Frequent Kernel panic ( like 5-6 times in a day) in 10.6.7

    Hi,
I have Macbook Pro 10.6.7 Mid 2010 model. I recently changed my Main Logic board due to hardware issue. After that i see very frequent OS crashes. The Process context shows different process each time. So i guess this has something to do with hardware. The crash is due to a kernel trap, but i could not find more help in google. I am pastic the kernel panic. Please help me.

If you changed out the logic board yourself, it is likely you did not do it correctly. It could be something as simple as a loose screw or connector or something more serious. Double check your work, preferably using an online disassembly or repair guide as a reference. Pay particular attention to screw lengths & where they go -- sometimes a screw just a few millimeters too long in the wrong place will cause problems. Do the same for any mechanical parts like metal shields & for cables. They must be in exactly the right location & orientation or you may have problems, this because everything is so crowded together in laptops.
If the cause is indeed hardware related, panic logs won't do you any good -- they report the memory state at the time of the panic & if the hardware can't reliably write to or read from memory, nothing they tell you can be trusted.

  • Kernel Panic, Restored System Using Time Machine but Problems Still  Persis

SOS! Please, please, please help. I'm at a loss here. I have an 300 GB iMac with a 32 GB partition for Windows. I backup to an Iomega UltraMax 500 GB external hard drive. Let me know if more info is needed. I went through the checklists to resolve a kernel panic, and nothing has been working. Here's the background:
I recently encountered a kernel panic (I saw the screen discussed in the "What is a kernel panic?" article). It started when Firefox 3.2 beta was running. It froze and eventually the system froze. I repaired disk permissions, and I was able to boot up, but it took awhile to boot up. Some things weren't right once it was booted; I lost some keyboard functionality, system settings (screen saver, display settings, etc), etc. I attempted to repair the disk (using disk utility while booted from leopard install disc), but it failed (generated an error, said it couldn't repair disk). So I did the next thing and restored the system from Time Machine. Things seemed to be alright.
And about a couple days later, Time Machine starting encountering errors and failed to backup (it failed while attempting to backup 300 MB). The system also started to get slower, and it eventually froze. So I restored again from Time Machine. Seemed to be alright, but again it eventually slowed and started freezing.
I can't retrieve the panic log. I think it was erased with one of my system restores. I went into Time Machine to look for it, and it's nowhere to be found.
So, I tried to repair my disk permissions. That succeeded. But the disk repair failed again. I restored again from Time Machine. Same thing: things seem okay, but Time Machine isn't able to back-up (it's pretty much non-responsive, even after I told it to stop, it just says "stopping"), things are a bit slow and some applications are unstable (Firefox crashed for no apparent reason). I just found this under /Library/Logs/Crash Reporter:

Windows XP ran fine from my other partition at this point. I'm wondering if my Windows partition has something to do with it (I chose FAT32 instead of NTFS file system)?
Please help. Will erasing the drive, reinstalling from the leopard disc (10.5.4), and restoring select applications/folders/files help, instead of from a system restore from Time Machine?
    Your help is immensely appreciated!

    Thanks for responding.
So under the partition tab, I should reformat to one partition, reinstall Leopard, and see what happens from there? Selectively restore applications, music, pictures to my system once it's reinstalled and properly updated? Anything else I may need to do or restore?
Why not reformat under the erase tab, zero out the disk, and reinstall? Any difference?
Just a little worried and unsure is all. If it's a hardware thing, I can accept that and take it in to be serviced. But, if it is a software issue, I don't want to do any irreparable harm during the erase-and-reinstall process. Just want to make sure I get it right.

  • MBP having Kernel Panic (Crash) all the time due to Wireless card firmware.

    Hi all,
I am desperately needing helps from the experts here now. I have the latest santa rosa Macbook Pro. It has been crashing on me lately due to the wireless card firmware. I have run all the latest updates from software update including the AirPort.Atheros firmware update. I have tried to reformat the hard drive and installed a fresh and clean Mac OSX. The crash still persists before AND after the AirPort.Atheros firmware update. I mean I was not having this issue when I first bought the computer while others were whining all over the internet about this problem. When the fix came out, everyone
s problems seem to be solved but my problem arose . A recent Kernel panic crash log is as following:

A way to know that the crash is gonna happen is that the internet stops working and as long as I click on the wifi icon on the menu bar, The crash occurs. Could someone please help to put me out of misery please . Thank you so much for reading this and any suggestions are greatly appreciated.
    Thank you
    Have a nice day.

i would try this in a test user to see if the issue occurs (more than likely it will)also i would reset the smc and the pram
(test user) go to the apple then system preferences then accounts then in the bottom right hand corner you will see there is a lock click it and put in the password for the computer then click ok then click the plus sign and create the test user make sure that you check the box that says allow user to admin the account then click create account (if a message says something about automatic login click keep) then click the apple and log out then login to the other user.
(smc) you shut the computer down then you unplugg all the cables from the computer then you take the battery out with the battery out you hold the power button down for five seconds then you put the battery back then plug in the ac adapter then start the comptuer up and then plug everything else back in
(pram) you restart the computer holding down the apple option P and R keys till you hear the start up chime twice
if that does not work i would boot to the install disk one holding c and then click utilites from the top and select the mac hd and then verify disk and repair disk
if the issue still occurs then i would back all of the information on the computer up and erase and install
    hope this helps

  • Kernel panic after restoring from Time Machine backup

    Hi all!
Slight problem. My iMac 8,1 froze a couple of days ago. Graphic artifacts on the screen, couldn't do anything although music tracks would still move on to the next one after a song finishes etc. Only worked in Safe Mode. Anyway, after trying literally everything, I decided to restore from a Time Machine backup. My iMac is still on 10.6.8 but my Snow Leopard DVD is with my parents at the mo so I put in my Leopard DVD that originally came with my iMac, booted to it and instead of reinstalling the OS, just asked to restore from backup. I tried twice but on restarting, there was a kernel panic. Is this because I booted to the Leopard DVD instead of the Snow Leopard update DVD?
    Thanks in advance!

    Hi there!
Thanks for your reply! Yes, I suspect there is a hardware issue - most likely the graphics card (NVidia GeForce 8800GS). To clarify, both DVDs are mine. My iMac originally came with Leopard, but I updated to Snow Leopard. My Snow Leopard DVD is being posted to me, but I tried using the Leopard DVD to boot to to choose the restore option, but I assume I need to do this from my Snow Leopard update DVD. I'll probably have to get it fixed anyway as there is clearly a hardware issue. My three year Apple Care has expired so does anyone know how much a repair might cost? (assuming it's the GPU) I dunno whether they'd put another NVidia in or go with an ATI now...

  • Kernel Panic after restoring with Time Machine

I'm trying to replace my 250GB HD with a 500GB one, but when I reboot after the TM restore, I receive a kernel panic. The message contains the error "panic .... /sbin/launchd, errno 8 ....", and then gives the stack trace. I think errno 8 is 'incorrect format', but I'm not sure what that means in this case. I don't know what to do next, and could use some suggestions.
Here is the procedure I used:
    - Backup everything with TM to an external drive (500GB HD)
    - replace HD
    - boot from original OS X install DVD (10.5.5)
    - create a single volume on the new HD, using the whole HD
    - Restore from TM backup (completes in about 3 hours)
    - Boot from new HD - kernel panic each time
    A couple notes:
I verified that /sbin/launchd exists on my TM backup.
    - I'm running 10.6, but I tried booting from my snow leopard disk (which I ordered shortly after receiving my computer), and that did not work, so I went back to using the original one I received with my computer (leopard). Could this be causing the problem?
    - The machine boots fine when I re-install the original 250GB drive, so I know I don't have any other h/w failures
    - With the new restored HD inserted as well as the install DVD, the machine wants to boot each time from the HD, and not the DVD, giving me an endless loop of kernel panics. I thought it would boot from the DVD if it's installed. Is there a way to over-ride, and select the media from which to boot?
Any thoughts or suggestions are much appreciated.
    Thanks,
    Jeff

Thank you for the quick response. Booting from the SL DVD, partitioning, and then a full restore has worked.
    Great!
It did take a bit for me to figure out how to select the SL DVD - the HD already had a restore on it that was causing the panic. The 'alt' key is a great trick for selecting your boot device.
So is the "C" key. That will boot from the CD (or DVD) in the SuperDrive.

  • IMac kernel panics happen once a week

    Hi:
I have an iMac  with OSX 10.9.5 installed. After I've installed RAM from OWC I am getting kernel panics once per week...I did check the memory in single user mode with memtest and no errors were found (so I suppose it is not a memory issue). The process responsible for the panic is changing:
BSD process name corresponding to current thread: kernel_task
BSD process name corresponding to current thread: kernel_task
BSD process name corresponding to current thread: Skype (After this I've removed Skype, but a week later I got another kernel panic)
    Now it is:
BSD process name corresponding to current thread: ARM
So my question is what is ARM?
    Thanks

    Thank you for your answer.
But the periodicity of recurrence of the panics seems to indicate some weirdness, every 7 days....
    Please, see the screenshot
The thing is that I already gave away my old memory to a colleague. And changing back means going from 16gb to 4gb for a week at least... And since I've never had kernel panics with the previous memory I think I won't see it. I want to eliminate all the other issues before sending the memory back for replacement (because it isa work computer), and OWC does not do avance replacements for Canada...
    Thanks

  • Random Kernel Panics _ 6 crashes in 5 days

I've been having Random Kernel Panics. 6 in the last week. Never had one before.
    I use a 17" Intel MBP, 2GB in RAM (667MHz DDR2 SDRAM).
I have a SerialATA 120GB HD model ST9120821AS, Journaled HFS+, currently have 16GB free (from 14 - 16 free GB when the crashes ocurred)
Got a RAM update on march 10. (added 1GB Samsung PC5300)
I was using GreaseKit, SafariStand (running on SIMBL) and the Inquisitor plugins for safari.
I uninstalled SIMBL and the plugins before the last crash. I uninstalled Inquisitor and IceClean after the last crash. (IceClean was not installed when the 1st crash occurred)
at the moment if the crash I was running Mail.app, Safari, Adium, iTunes (and sometimes Skype), nothing out of the usual.
    here's the Crash Log.

We have figured that it is a problem with the airport update for MacBook Pro users on the first generation 2.33 ghz and returning to 10.4.9 might work for you. The 10.4.10 update has some kind of airport update that is causing problems with the earlier models.
For the later models like mine this update to the Airport is applied from the factory and it is harder for us to fix it. And with us it happens even when we go back to 10.4.9.
Here is the line in your log that proves the Airport is at fault:
    com.apple.driver.AirPort.Atheros(230.8.5)@0x980000
There is a lot of information in the thread if you can stand to read it to find it.

  • Adobe Illustrator and InDesign CS5 crash when trying to place images. Happens around 5+ times a day.

    Hi there
This Mac is quite new and was originally a migration (using Migration Assistant) from an older Mac.
Illustrator and InDesign in CS5 were both crashing often and most of the time it's when placing an image (in either application) – it doesn't crash each time I try to place an image, but 90% of the crashes are when placing an image.
We tried lots of things, like cleaning out the fonts, clearing font caches etc. After several months of that, we decided to wipe the Mac clean and start from scratch. It has been reformatted with a clean install of the OS and only minimal additional software added. Although quite a few fonts have been reinstalled, they all validate in Font Book.
One other thing of note is that the Adobe Updater fails to complete an update and so we have had to update each application manually from the Adobe website.
I would be so grateful someone could help shed some light on what is going on. Here's an EtreCheck report. Can also provide crash reports from the Console if useful.
    Thanks!

  • Kernel Panic Immediately After Full Time Machine Backup

Hi, after I reinstalled my OS from a previous Time Machine backup, I've been getting a kernel panick:
    panic(cpu 0 caller 0xffffff80005418bf): "Process 1 exec of /sbom/launchd failed. errno 88"@/SourceCache/xnu/xnu-1699.32.7/bsd/kern/kern_exec.c:3546
    Here's my specs:
    - OS: Went from Leopard 10.5.8 to Lion 10.7.5. (Reinstalled OS X from default installation disc then reinstalled OS X from a 10.7.5 backup; Was having trouble booting with 10.5.8)
    - Hard Drive: 2008 Intel Core Duo
    - RAM: 4GB installed
Any ideas? I've already tried resetting PRAM and NVRAM. It occured right after I installed the Time Machine backup, when it tells you to restart your computer. I was having previous boot problems where my Mac just wouldn't boot, that's why I reverted to 10.5.8. That was working perfectly fine, until I restarted... Then the never ending gray startup screen popped up again.
Any help would be appreciated. Thanks.

    - Formatted my HD. Then did a clean install of mountain lion.
That's usually overkill.  Just installing a fresh version of Lion (or upgrading to Mountain Lion), without disturbing anything else, will fix 99% of problems with OSX.
    - Tried to restore my documents manually but got a lot of rights-issues,
The user account you set up wasn't recognized as being the same one as on the backups.  It's a slightly different cause, but see the pink box in Problems after using Migration Assistant for an explanation.
    - Tried to restore my TM backup by booting from Mountain lion 10.8 bootable disk, trying to restore to 10.7.5.
Do you mean an InstallESD.dmg?  If so, that should work, but I don't recall if I've done it lately, and that may have updated your Recovery HD to the Mountain Lion version.  Do you have a Lion version you can use instead?  If you do, erase the whole disk (not just the OSX partition), then restore the Lion backup.
Does your Recovery HD work?  If so, that's the easiest -- just start up from it and do the Restore.
If not, and your Mac came with Lion, you should be able to erase the entire disk and use Internet Recovery to do the restore (or download and install a fresh copy of Lion), then use Setup Assistant to transfer your stuff.

  • Macbook pro crashes 5 times per day

My 17' MacBook Pro kernel panics  at least 5 times per day ever since I upgraded to Lion ( I guess it Lion bit me ).    I've read  articles on people facing simular issues like http://osxdaily.com/2011/08/09/fix-macbook-pro-2010-crashes-kernel-panics-black- screens-in-os-x-10-7-lion/
    Isn't there a fix for this ?????
Seems like when I'm using Gotomeeting it happens a lot.

There are really only two common causes for kernel panics: hardware issues and incompatible third-party kernel extensions.  Since it just started since upgrading to Lion, the latter is highly likely.  Since it mostly happens when using GotoMeeting, that points a great big finger covered with blinking red lights right there!
Have you tried updating to the latest verison of GotoMeeting?  Take a look at this page for more information:

  • IMac 27" with Wireless G network causes Kernel Panics

    I bought a 27" iMac Jan 8th 2010
    At home i'm running a Wireless G network through a linksys WRT54G V7.0 router
From day one i was running into Kermnel Panics several times a day
When i was provided a new machine the same thing happened
The machine has been away for repair for 2 weeks and nothing was found.
As soon as the machine was back home the Kernel Panics started again
A clean install has ben done, and when setting up the network for the build in airport, the machine died again in a kernel panic
After further discussions with apple repair they stated the the Kernel Panics were caused by the Wireless G network, and was advised to get myself a wireless N router
I got myself a wirelees N router (apple airport extreme), and no more Kernel Panics were seen
    Now the questions are :
Did anybody else ran into this issue ?
Is somebody have this same issue and also have a linksys router ?
Would anybody be able to explain why my Linksys WRT54g V7.0 router running Wireless G cuase the Kernel Panics on my machine ?
Ok quite a story, but hope to get some constructive answers.
    thnx
    Paul

I took home a 27" i5 iMac on 7th of Mar 2010 and immediately two days later i had my first kernel panic.
When i called Apple Support the next day i was led through a barrage of file deleting and the usual Disk Utilities Repair Disk actions. Two days later another kernel panic happened but this time the computer display remained blank. I brought it back to the department store where i purchased it and, they agreed to replace my unit (still within the store's seven days warranty).
Five days later my new unit arrives and the moment i turned on the wireless connectivity i had another kernel panic. I was ****** - NOT looking forward to carrying the 38lb computer back to the store again. Called Apple again and the guy had me reinstall OSX. One day later kernel panics still there.
Then i experimented by not turning on the wireless internet, for two days no kernel panics. The moment i did, a kernel panic would occurs, i got suspicious. That's when i stumbled on luupski's post (I'm real glad i found it). I also was using a linksys WRT54G router and getting the same kernel panics as everyone on this thread. Now that the root cause has been identified, i decided to save my SGD258 (apple airport express) and instead invested SGD18 in a Cat5e 20m ethernet cable. My mac now works perfectly apart from the lack of wireless network, which i can grudgingly bear.
Real glad to see genuine and useful posts in a forum like this. I will be giving a heads up to the Apple support guys, they seem to be totally oblivious about this issue. Its weird since the WRT54G seems to be quite popular here in Singapore.
    Thanks,
    simon
