can someone help me? tnks!!!You are experiencing a Kernel Panic, as shown in Apple kb article TS3742. .
Bad or incompatible RAM is, more often then not, the cause of most Kernel Panics. It could also just need to be reset.
Here's the most used site for Resolving Kernel Panics. Please do all the steps in order, even if you don't think you need to do a certain step. This link just goes up to Snow Leopard but there are a lot of good tips in there.
Here is a great MacFixIt article.

IMac (Late 2008) (8,1) (20") Shuts Down Unexpectedly
Hello everyone, here's my problem:
Every know and then my iMac (Late 2008) 8,1 20" shuts down unexpectedly, more than once. And usually happens when I'm stressing the computer by clicking on things or just at random times. The computer however seems to be hot on top when it does shut down. When the computer shuts down it then turns back on after about 10 seconds. I've called Apple they had me reset the PRAM this worked but then after a few weeks the problem had begun again. I don't want to take it into the Apple store just yet because I really need my iMac right now and I want to know if there are any other options I have to fix this besides taking the iMac into an Apple store. Also could it be that I have to little RAM? I only have 1 GB or ram and my bus speed is: 1.07 GHz, Processor Speed: 2.4 GHz. Oh and I'm running Snow Leopard (10.6.4).
Hope you can can figure out whats wrong or what might be causing this problem. Also if you have any questions or need more info to solve the problem, just feel free to ask and I will answer them.Check out this thread and see if it pertains to your problem.

Trouble with iMac late 2008 - Slow Unresponsive
Hi all
Recently.. my Mac has become unresponsive, but not all the time. Sometimes when I log on it will be fine, and I can browse the internet and game on it (World of Warcraft) comfortably. However, after a seemingly random amount of time, or on startup at times, the computer will become increasingly slow, up to a point where I can't do anything but still move the mouse around etc. Eventually i'm forced to hold down the power off button And it's usually not any better once I turn the computer on, it just 'fixes' itself for a short period of time occasionally.
Looking on Console, I get messages from the dock/dashboard including "..failed to connect to the server: NSPortTimeoutException" and from .com.apple.myCocoaapp[107] saying that 'OPENVPNAS: as_open failed" and "Installed from: installer". Various other messages appear at times, when the mac is unresponsive. Help needed!
Thanks in advanceEverything in general. Can't open new windows (If for instance I click Safari whilst it's unresponsive, the computer will freeze... If I come back 10 minutes later Safari will be open, but if I do anything in Safari it will freeze again). Programs already running such as iTunes will start off by performing slow then totally freeze up. Moving files around is also painfully slow/impossible at times

To complicate matters I tried to run the mac os snow leopard cd but alas it could not boot so it did not save me and now the cd won't eject either probably due to the no access to everyone. I was patient and gentle guys.
I have tried the following without success..
1. Ejecting the cd using the famous 5 options already posted on here.
2. Power on holding down "c".
3. Power on holding down "command s"
Basically reinstalling the system software, changing permissions, then using TM to restore my system before the problem seems impossible unless a genius here (or at the store) can help me with a rescue mission...
Can anyone help with this? Aside from this particular incident, I'm a pretty bright kid so happy to try a few things before giving up...
Thanks in advance for your time.Hi LetJoJoTakeOver, thank you for that. I did actually try the former piece of advice.
The problem has now been resolved by folks at the Apple Store and this it what they did...
1. Using one prepared earlier, they hooked up an external hard drive with Snow Leopard installed on it.
2. Held down the "Option" key while starting up my iMac.
3. Selected my hard drive then hit the "Command i" (get info) keys.
4. Restored the permissions under "everyone" to "read and write".
5. Ran "Disk Utilities" to make sure there were no other permission issues.
6. Restarted the iMac with the external hard drive disconnected.
Hey presto. It worked.
Lesson learned?
I think it's clear. You can pretty much do anything software related and the guys at the Apple Store can sort it out when all else fails. -
IMac late 2008, 2GB RAM, Mavericks 10.9.2, Noise in sleep
What keeps making the cyclical noise while in sleep? Sounds like iMac is loading an application, a graphic, or a different screen. Does it periodically while in sleep mode. Does seem to do with increasing frequency as time passes while in sleep. How do I correct this? Just started doing it in the last few months. I'm afraid I'm setting myself up for some kind of premature hardware failure. I've tried everything such as checking Energy Saver settings, Bluetooth settings, print queue, etc.
iMac, OS X Mavericks (10.9.2)I finally figured out how to fix this. First I reviewed "Mac OS X: Why your Mac might not sleep of stay in sleep mode." I noted the bullet: "Do you have any other external USB or Firewire devices connected?" I have an CP685AVR for a UPS for my Mac. I replaced the battery a few months ago. I also hooked up Apple's 'Energy Saver' power management software to the CP685AVR using the USB connection. I disconnected it, and that solved the problem. I still have the UPS and battery back-up; I just can't "monitor" the battery. What's to monitor? It always said the battery was 100% charged even right up to the time the previous battery failed. Thanks for listening, uh... reading.

I'm not sure if any recent activity spawned this activity but here's what I've done lately that's new...
I booted to the recovery disk and and ran the disk repair utility on my hard drive. Then I ran the RecoveryDiskAssistant to create a bootable USB thumb drive, and then I attempted to create a disk image on an external USB hard drive. About an hour after I started creating the image I aborted the image creation process. Both the MacBook Pro and the external hard drive were very hot.
I was experimenting, attempting to create the disk image file onto an external hard drive that is half the size of my existing main hard drive, and was not sure the image would fit, so aborted the process before it completed once I realized it might be an overnight task. I'm wondering if the heat caused by the intense disk activity may have cooked something on my logic board. Or maybe somethign completely unrelated is the cause, like a recent patch or software update perhaps???
Can anyone help me identify a possible cause of the kernal panics from the two most recent log files attached below?

Thunderbolt Bus:Answering my own question... I did more research and have a theory that my Time Capsule hard drive may be causing the kernal panics due to a disk error. I ran the disk utility to repair the time capsule drive (actually a 3TB Seagate USB drive plugged into my Airport Extreme router). I plugged the drive directly into my MacBook Pro and ran the repair utility. It noticed a "minor header" issue and repaired it. I'm leaving all USB and Firewire devices unplugged for a while and will see if the panics return. Six years without any problem with my MacBook. Love Apple. I'd get a new MacBook, but this one just keeps on working...

Kernel panics on startup on a MB late 2008
Hi everyone.
After reading dozens of threads about kernel panics I couldn't find any appropriate post.
So you see, I've got a unibody MacBook late 2008 and as the thread name states I'm experiencing kernel panics on startup. The weird thing is, these panics occur totally random and I can't induce them. Usually I have an apple keyboard, apple mouse and a WD 1TB drive (TimeMachine backup) connected via USB plus an external monitor and magsafe power. Even after disconnecting all that stuff I receive kernel panics.
I haven't had any kernel panic during normal operation so far. As soon as I get the system up and running nothing happens. They just keep coming every second or third startup.
There are 9 crash reports in my L/Logs/Diag.Reports. You can see the last kernel panic report here:

Frequent kernel panics on my macbook 5,1 (late 2008)
Hi all,
since some week I'm experiencing frequent kernel panic on my macbook unibody 5,1 (late 2008).
I tried to upgrade from Snow Leopard to Mavericks but this didn't solve my problem. Now I started with a new clean installation of Snow Leopard, but after a few of hours I experienced an other kernel panic.
I hope someone of you can help me with the issue. I report below the crash log, could you read in it what is the problem?

AndreaKernel panics indicate either a driver that is corrupted, a directory that is corrupted, or marginal hardware.
When hardware test is unrevealing on an erase and install, then RAM is usually the culprit. Never install third party RAM without the age of the Mac and the model specified by the RAM manufacturer. http://www.macsales.com/ and http://www.crucial.com/ are two with a lifetime warranty that do that.
If your data is backed up, the directory can be examined, or an erase performed to isolate possible hardware issues. -
Late 2008 unibody MacBook Pro + 6GB RAM + Snow Leopard = Kernel Panic
Hi,
I've been trying to install Snow Leopard on my 2.8Ghz MacbookPro unibody (late 2008) with 6GB of RAM (4GB+2GB module).
At first, I did an upgrade of my existing Leopard drive, and when booting back in 10.6, everything was crashing (could not open a single web browser but Safari, for instance), and I was getting kernel panics each 10 minutes.
Then, I erased my boot disk and tried a clean install - I was getting kernel panics when installing! After 5 tries, it finally installed, and then I couldn't get through the welcome wizard the first time it boots.
So I removed the 4GB RAM module, and re-installed a 2GB one, and then everything was fine, not a single problem.
Take into consideration that that 4GB ram module was working perfectly under 10.5.8 (even while using the computer under a lot of stress) and passed all the hardware test.
Has anyone been successful at running Snow Leopard 10.6 on a late 2008 Macbook Pro unibody and 6GB of RAM?Wow, this is really interesting! I own a UniBody MacBook Aluminum 13" 2.4 GHz 5,1 (October 2008) and ordered a 4 GB RAM module from OWC to max out my system to 6 GB for virtual machine use. I'd just performed a clean install of Snow Leopard a couple of days ago and was excited about the new operating system along with that additional RAM. But guess what? When I inserted the new 4 GB stick I suffered a kernel panic within minutes! I tried moving the module around between the two slots and inserting it on its own without the additional 2 GB module and the same lockups occured every time!
Who ever would have thought this might be a problem with the new operating system rather than an incompatibility with the new module? OWC even agreed to refund my purchase but before I send the stick back I'll go ahead and install the original Leopard operating system and try again. Based on your experience I'm convinced the new stick will work and prefer more RAM than a newer operating system. Thanks to all of you for having posted this; I'd have never suspected an issue with Snow Leopard otherwise. In fact, I was hoping to be able to upgrade to 8 GB of RAM with 10.6. Turns out we may be better off with 10.5.8, at least for now! -
Kernel panic iMac 27" Lion 10.7.1
I hope someone can give me a hint what the problem behind the kernel panic is.
It started a few days ago. During the system boot (Apple, wheel) some system messages started to show up on the screen, then the request to restart the system.
This happend 4-5 times ina row then the system stared without any problems.
I tried some testing and repair:
- AHT: no problems
- memtest 5 cycles in Single User mode: no errors
- memory modules swap/replacement - no hints as the system stared each time without problems
- Full disk scan (Drive Genius): no errors
- Applejack
- finally I restored the disk directory using Disk Warrior
Everything has been fine since then, until today when the kernel panic hapennde again.
Below the log - maybe someone can read it and help. Thanks.
Tonden

Kernel Panic - imac rebooting please help?
Hello
My 2009 iMac continues to reboot due to kernel panic during the past couple of week. It happes several times a day. I cannot find any specific cause and it seems to happen randomly. That is even when the computer is on standby. I hvae searched the web, but cannot find a solution. The problem is getting worse.
I have tried apple hardware test that detected no problems. I have upgraded the imac last yaer with a Samsung SSD and its running 6 gb ram. It has worked flawless until now. Should I consider buying a new Imac?
Here is the log:

Boot into safe mode (restart holding down SHIFT key). If no KP, then uninstall and reinstall those, one at a time.. If KP, then most likely hardware related. Run the Apple Hardware Test suite, extended tests at least twice, followed by Rember. See

Kernel Panic - Can anyone help decipher this?
Second Kernel Panic in just over a week. I wish I knew how to decipher these logs.
Can anyone help me understand these two short logs?
I see the name Keyspan in the backtrace of both logs. Keyspan is the company that makes a USB server which allows me to connect and access two USB printers on my network. I use that because I have two workstations that need to use those printers.
The latest panic occurred when attempting to print but after noticing the Keyspan print dialog read: Printer not connected. I checked the cables and then saw the panic.
Keyspan was a good company that was bought by Tripplite who doesn't appear to give a hoot about Mac and will therefore NOT make driver updates.
Bad driver?
Thanks,
Jeff

There are no Mac viruses in the wild.
ClamXav might be causing some of the problems... try deleting ClamXav and see if the kernel panics persist. You can always reinstall it. Anti virus software on a Mac tends to cause more problems then it's worth. -
Predictable pattern of kernel panics - can you interpret a panic report?
Hi. Long time listener, first time caller.
I installed 10.5 on my PB as soon as it became available and have had an issue with kernel panics ever since. The panics arrive in waves of ~12-15 at a time over the two to three days (~36-48 hours of uptime) immediately subsequent to my having booted from a volume other than the 10.5.2 system on my PB's internal HD. When the panics have run their course, everything returns to normal, and no problems of any kind arise until after I've temporarily booted into another volume.
I have experienced these waves of kps after booting from a 10.5.2 volume on an external drive; two different 10.4.11 volumes on two different external drives; the 10.5 retail install disc; a brand new DiskWarrior 4.1 CD, and the AHT volume on the (replacement) Install and Restore disc that came with my computer. (None of the utilities I've used to attempt diagnose my issue have returned any errors or warnings about the state of my hardware \[incl. RAM and AEBS] or my main boot volume.)
I've attached the latest panic report below. It is identical to all of my PanicReporter entries for the past 6 months. I can see that this may be AirPort (driver) related, but if you can offer a more incisive reading of the report than that, I'm definitely interested in what you have to say.

Thank you.Because this post contains information that may be useful to others later on, I will not ask that it be removed as I have some of your previous posts in this topic.
Notes:
Panics do indeed occur in various situations, but as you suggest, I cannot at every moment account for the status of background processes. As I've said, however, the data in the panic reports I have amassed over the past six months are (virtually) identical. And as I pointed out more than once, these spates of panics occur in predictable, repeatable cycles.
AHT in Extended, loop mode over 24 hours has not detected a RAM issue, though I am aware that this does not necessarily rule a RAM issue out.
As mentioned above, neither DU's Disk Repair nor DiskWarrior have solved this issue.
No data was transferred to this present installation via TDM or Migration Assistant. It was an E&I onto a freshly formatted volume. There is very little third-party software installed (BBEdit; CSSEdit; an FTP client and various browsers). Other major third-party software exists on 10.4.11 volumes because I am too cheap to upgrade many of these products when older versions still work well in the previous OS.
There is no third-party hardware attached to this machine beyond a variety of HDs (all OWC; Hitachi), and there is no firmware to update for any other peripherals being used, however sporadically.
This problem has presented itself through a variety of installation options, including a simple upgrade from 10.4.10; an A&I over a 10.4.10 volume; E&Is both using and not using Migration Assistant (with A&Is following both), and cloning an E&I on an external volume back to a newly formatted volume on my PB.
Could be the RAM, but the symptoms (and the log files) tell me that more likely it's an I/O issue having something to do with AirPort, which brings you and I full circle, I guess.
Thanks again! -
Late 2008 iMac stuck in continual restart, startup screen issue
So, I come home last night and my iMac has shut itself off, not terribly out of the ordinary, so I start it up. However, the screen is covered in black blocks of pixels, with some color thrown in. The little wheel spins for about a minute I guess and then the next thing that pops up, although barely visible through the mess, appears to be the "new age" style kernal panic warning. It just cycles through this over and over without stopping, never getting any further than the first start up screen with the Apple logo on it. After hopelessly trying to restart a few times thinking it would go away, I hook it up in Target Disk Mode to my MBPro and start pulling stuff off the hard drive. Running Disk Utility on my iMac throws three errors, "incorrect number of file hard links," "invalid directory item count," and "the volume Hard Disk was found corrupt and needs repaired... Error: this disk needs to be repaired. click repair disk."
Originally I thought it was a graphics or logic board issue (I remember a similar looking display issue years ago on my G4 Cube), but now these errors make me think its a directory issue? I really don't know.
Here are a couple pictures of what I'm talking about:

sorry about the external links, pictures were too big to be embedded.
Cheers
Edit: I should mention this is a late 2008 iMac, running OS X 10.8.3Run Apple Hardware Test in Extended Mode 3 times. If it reports errors take it in for repair, Apple does not publish the error codes so please do not ask what they mean. Only an Apple Store or AASP will be able translate them for you. Good luck.
