Kernel Panics at Login Window?
Ever since I installed Adobe CS2 a few months ago, I've had increasing numbers of kernal panics just as the machine reaches the login window. I thought it might be hardware related so I unplugged all usb devices except mouse and keyboard and my external Firewire 800 drive and my speakers. I'm still getting the panics, or I'm not getting past the grey screen, fans revving and cycling dial for 5 or more minutes.
I'm running the hardware test disk but it seems to be passing all hardware tests. Can this simply be a bad or corrupt system? I cannot log in now to deauthorize or deactive, so I'm planning to do an archive install and hopefully it won't mess up my CS2 and Macromedia ownerships.
Please respond quickly if you have advice, I'm checking mail often because I'm starting to get desperate. Using my PC for email, which i never do!
Oh, btw, when doing a safe boot, I see comm apple driver IOFirewire Serial bus prtocol has no kernel dependency. and a bunch of types of devices showing no kernel dependency. Would going from 10.4.3 to 10.4.5 install what I'm missing? G5 Dual 2.5 Mac OS X (10.4.3)
I bought a G5 Quad a month ago. Right from the start, a constant series of Kernel Panics. Took it back to dealer. They returned it to Apple. Apple sent dealer a replacement. Dealer tested it. 'Blew up' on workbench. Apple sent another. This was sent to me. Now, a week later, Kernel panics continue. Exactly as before. Have followed all the numerous pieces of advice in this forum and on Apple Support, etc, etc, to infinitum. Tomorrow I shall take the machine back to dealer.
Now I am wondering two very simple, very basic questions:
(1) is there something wrong with these machines? There are SO MANY reports of issues like these.
and
(2) Why is it up to the customer to find out the answer to this question, having paid x amount of money? I am amazed at how generous Apple customers are to the company!

Kernel Panic After Login yet Safe Boot Works
Every time I attempt to login I have a Kernel Panic, so I booted up in Safe Boot and logged in with no problem. Any ideas?
Remove your login items and check if you still get a KP after login.

Kernel panics after accessing Windows network
When I have connected to a Windows server and then disconnect my Mac from the network I receive an odd-looking error message (something about a C: drive that cannot be not found). As soon as I click the OK button of that dialog window I get a KERNEL PANIC (dark screen and everything).
Needless to say, I am of course loosing a lot of valuable data when this happens. Unfortunately, the application that automatically tries to report the error to Apple also doesn't succeed in sending the info(!). All other network functionality seems to work fine though.
Is this a unique problem, or has it been documented (and hopefully solved) before on this forum? We've been having similar issues, check this thread for more info and a potential resolution.
Good luck, hopefully this is patched in 10.5.6 as it's become very frustrating. -
MacBook Pro Won't Boot. Kernel Panic. Only Windows Partition Works
So one day I was using my mac when it froze for no apparent reason, i was just running iTunes, so i held the power key and it shut down. After a while, i turned it back on and it got to the apple but then i got a bunch of errors i guess, around the lines of kernel panic. So i went online and read other peoples problems but none of them seamed to work. It wont start up normally, not in safe mode, recovery drive wont boot, only the windows partition works. i reset my PRAM i think its called and that failed. someone online said to re-install lion. i dont have a lion recovery usb thingy, but i have a lion disk, but my disk drive no longer works due to hardware damage. so i need to back up my files from my mac partition and re-install lion OR just get rid of the Kernel Panic Thingy.
ps. everytime i try to boot mac, i get a different error message.
any help is greatly appreciatedAre you willing to lose the data that isn't backed up? If not, you have to try to back up now, before you do anything else.
There are several ways to back up a Mac that is unable to fully boot. You need an external hard drive to hold the backup data.
1. Boot into Recovery (command-R at startup; 10.7 or later), from a local Time Machine backup volume (option key at startup; 10.7.2 or later), or from your installation disc (C key at startup; 10.6.8 or earlier.) Launch Disk Utility and follow the instructions in the support article linked below, under “Instructions for backing up to an external hard disk via Disk Utility.”
How to back up and restore your files
2. If you have access to a working Mac, and both it and the non-working Mac have FireWire or Thunderbolt ports, boot the non-working Mac in target disk mode by holding down the key combination command-T at the startup chime. Connect the two Macs with a FireWire or Thunderbolt cable. The internal drive of the machine running in target mode will mount as an external drive on the other machine. Copy the data to another drive. This technique won't work with USB, Ethernet, Wi-Fi, or Bluetooth.
How to use and troubleshoot FireWire target disk mode
3. If the internal drive of the non-working Mac is user-replaceable, remove it and mount it in an external enclosure or drive dock. Use another Mac to copy the data. -
Kernel Panic when Unmounting $ Windows Shares
So I have been dealing with this problem for quite a while and can't seem to find any solutions for the problem anywhere.
When I mount a hidden windows share using smb (EXAMPLE: "smb://windowsbox/c$")and then unmount it more than 10 minutes later I inevitably get a KP. It may take a few seconds, but it happens without fail. Now I can connect to NON hidden shares on a windows box all day long, but if I have to include that '$' at the end of the share, it kills me. It's also with any windows box, not just one or one share in particular. If I stay connected to the share I have no problems, but that isn't possible when I go home for the day. I've tried disabling IPv6 (saw it somewhere on a thread with a pseudo-similar problem) and tried umount using the CLI. Still getting a KP. Since I am currently connected to one and will get the error when I unmount in a few minutes when my file transfer is done, I will come back and post the details of the KP. But any thoughts you might have in the mean time would be welcome.
adTHXvanceThere are some longstanding bugs in dealing with SMB networks that have yet to be resolved.
Sorry I can't help you further, but if you use the Search box to look in some of the other threads concerning panics and SMB, perhaps one of them could help you further. -
Kernel Panic, help please
Well, I guess I have been rudely introduced to what the Mac community calls a "kernel panic". In Windows I would have called it a system crash.
Every morning for the last 7 to 9 days, at trying to wake up my computer in the morning from sleep mode overnight, it crashes, and I have to turn off the power and restart. I am not exaggerating, it is truly EVERY morning! Sometimes, this happens twice during, as it did today. But each time it has happened at waking the computer. It seems that this happens after the computer has been in sleep mode for at least several hours.
When I try to wake the computer, I do see the desktop, but my mouse is frozen, and then I get the message "You need to restart your computer. etc.", in four different languages, English, French, German and Japanese.
I turn of the computer and then turn it back on. I am then presented with the option to send a report to Apple, which I have done on each occasion. Unfortunately this does not do me any good in solving the issue, because there is no way to let Apple know who I am.
Each time this happens, the Spotlight magnifying glass icon in the top right corner of the menu bar gets a dot in the center of it. When I click the Spotlight icon, I get the message "Indexing Backup Disk". This usually takes about 20 to 30 minutes. I have run Disk Utility to 'Verify' and 'Repair' my backup disk. According to the report everything seems to be fine.
Today, I saved the two reports of both crashes (kernel panics), and I have them. I do not know how to read them. Would it be appropriate to post them here, and hope that someone here can help me solve the problem?
This computer is all of 5 months old, i.e. almost brand new. This should not be happening. To say that I am angry at Apple to give me such a shoddy product is an understatement. With all its shortcomings Windows has never been this bad. This is a well known issue and is not related to factory installed hardware but can be when running controller cards that do not support sleep. These include SATA controllers, RAID cards, PCI audio interface cards, PCI DSP cards, External Memory Cards to Firewire enclosures attached off of Firewire.
Most of the time (with stock setup) it's due to corruption of the power management system plist file. Now, on some machines, mine being one, sleep never worked from day one- factory install or not, in fact, it was disabled from the Factory. Mac Pro 8 Core, so, don't worry about wake from sleep. Just disable it.
There's two methods for fixing that headache: one is to delete the power management files and then test. The other is a bit technical where it involves scripting into Terminal to make it work. I don't know how comfortable you feel with Terminal and command line programming so, try the first method first.
TO DO THAT: under the primary boot volume: library/preferences/systemconfiguration/powermanagement.plist - delete the file. You will now go to sys preferences and note that it's set to default. BY setting it up again, it will regenerate a new file which in some cases resolves the problem.
Google it, it's the biggest issues with Macs. PCs too by the way have this same issue with hibernation whereas if the sleep to disk sector written on the drive is damaged, it doesn't work properly. PCs have the same issue and if you have never had that happen, your lucky as when it happens on Billyware Box, it wreaks havoc on the registry files. Not good, so, count your blessings your dealing with it on one of the easiest operating systems to repair- OS X. It really is super easy to work with and get around to finding all the stuff whereas on Billyware, it's all hidden in binary files inside registry keys. With OSX, it's there as a name for super easy finding vs "where's Waldo"
Trust me, once you learn it, you will be so glad to be running a Mac over Billyware and the Spyware Factory. It may take time, but, you'll get there.
Now, for that "unmounting disk from ****"- that's another well known issue in the audio community forums that I provide service for. By deselecting "set disks to sleep" in the power management part of System Preferences, that will take care of that issue. What happens is that the disk goes to sleep and thus un mounts when running on FIrewire. Well known issue.
Now, if that doesn't resolve your issue, I know what is causing that. It's with your external drive. Some OEM drive MFRs use an internal sleep mode that is programmed into the firmware of the drive itself. Lacie's are like this, and, there is nothing you can do about that. I have seen those disconnect with an audio project running. Poof! Gone, and the DAW app crashes....
So, let me know what drive your running externally. Seagates and Lacies had this feature turned on by default. The cheap drive MFRs do this to "prolong" drive life, as they know if the drive were to run full on all the time, it would die in a matter of months. No lie, that is how they work around the issue of a cheap drive; by shutting it off. What a joke. Anyway, get back as to what your running along with how you make out with the power management setup. -
Help -- Recurring Kernel panic at cold start-up
imac g5 -- 1.8 ghz ppc -- 1 gb ddr sdram -- os x 10.4.11
The last two days my iMac has been having kernel panics at login after a cold start up -- off more than an hour or so. I've repaired the disk permissions, and disconnected peripherals, but it still happens, and the cold startup leads me to believe it's hardware... maybe ram or something? What do you think? Should I just keep it on 24/7? Is it possible the ram needs to be replaced and if so, how much would that cost?
here is the panic log:

Question:
Programs used have been operating without any events. Can someone please explain the error, cause any required resolution?I have had this same parentalcontrols kernel panic crash my system 4 times today--every single time I try to switch from my child's managed account to my own admin account. I can't seem to find anything on the discussions board that suggests a fix. Does anyone know if this bug will be corrected in 10.5.2? Or is there a workaround that doesn't involve turning off parental controls?
This kind of instability isn't what I'd expect from OS X. -
Kernel panic upon mounting local filesystems, yet Windows works fine
I recently got a free MacBook from Apple to replace my dying iBook G4 of almost 3 years. It's been working great. Got everything running great, Boot Camp'd it, and have enjoyed using it with both OSes.
Well, that is until a few days ago. My friend wanted to try out Parallels, so I let him boot up to it. It started acting slow (running off battery power, reduced CPU usage) so he forced a shutdown on it. Ever since then, OS X kernel panics on boot. Going into Safe Boot resulted in a kernel panic. Going into verbose mode reveals it panicking as it mounts the local filesystems (occasionally with a message about the Bluetooth idle timer stopping sandwiched between the mounting message and the panic message) Booted into single-user mode, ran a fsck, and it came up fine. Tried to boot from the bundled install DVD, but it only results in a kernel panic as well. Amazingly, through all of this, the Windows partition still works fine. I can also still use the Mac partition from Windows using MacDrive without a problem.
So, has the ghost of Bill Gates tried to overtake my MacBook, or have the little gnomes in there decided to mess with me? I'm pretty reluctant to say that it's the HD being corrupt, because as I mentioned before, the drive still works fine. All the hardware works fine under Windows as well.
Any help is appreciated.
Oh, and a snippet from the panic screen: (Didn't take the whole thing down, and I don't have a log to copy the text out of, seeing as it can't mount the drive to write the log to it)
panic(cpu 1 caller 0x001A31CE): Unresolved kernel trap (CPU 1, Type 14=page fault)
Sounds pretty typical for this sort of problem. My workaround appears to have been successful.
1. Start MacBook in FireWire Target Disk Mode.
2. Make an image of the OS X partition on the host computer using Disk Utility.
3. Erase and zero the OS X partition using Disk utility
4. Restore the OS X Partition using Disk utility.
I previously tried zapping PRAM and following the other Apple provided techniques for trying to get the system to boot, so thos changes might also have been important, though I doubt it.
The key piece of information to determine whether this fix is for you is the kernel panic while attempting to mount you disk in single-suer mode. If the MacBook gives a kernel panic identical to the one listed by the OP. The steps above appear to be a valid fix for such a problem.

[SOLVED] Windows/Arch UEFI--kernel panic at bootloader install?
I've been trying for two days now to get a Windows/Arch dual boot going, UEFI style. After HOURS of struggle (it's hell being a noob) I managed to get Windows 7 installed UEFI-style from a USB. Arch install is fine until I get to the step that involves installing a bootloader, and everything turns to crap.
Some kind of....I don't even know what. Core dump?? A screen full of numbers & letters!
With both rEFInd and gummiboot (haven't tried grub yet), I get the same result:
http://imgur.com/XS6NxzV
What the heck is going on?!
Last edited by wilberfan (2014-04-20 02:38:13)Just INSTALLING gummiboot causes mass chaos:
http://imgur.com/VWJNbvD
There's a whole screen full of "call traces" and stuff... UNINSTALLING gummiboot generates a metric ton of this stuff, too....
[edit] Something is SERIOUSLY borked in my system. I've now gotten the identical (or very similar) result trying to install gummiboot, rEFInd, AND grub. Some kind of kernel panic, or something...
All of that screen verbage going by is WAY above my pay grade at this point... :-/

OS X can't read SD card/kernel panic, windows XP or Vista
I'm using my friend's camera. It comes with an SD card. I tried to upload the photos to my macbook but every time i hook it up, i instantaneously get a kernel panic. On my brother's macbook, nothing happens. Literally nothing. He doesn't get a kernel panic, but it doesn't even mount.
On my dad's laptop, which is a PC, everything's ok. It shows up without problems.
What gives??I don't have the camera with me right now but first of all, I really doubt manufacturers of cameras also make the SD disks. Second of all, and I'm less sure about this, this seems to be a problem with my laptop and OS X, not the disk itself.

10.8.1 kernel panics and random freezing
I have a new 13" 2012 MacBook Air, approx. 8 weeks old. It shipped with Lion installed, and everything was great.
I upgraded to 10.8.0 when it was released, and things were still great (except I did experience the Thunderbolt audio issue that ended up being one of the fixes in 10.8.1)
Last Friday night (1 week ago), I upgrade to 10.8.1. I was happy to find that my Thunderbolt audio issue appeared to be fixed, as expected.
However, this is when things started to go downhill. I have now have two issues, which may or may not be related to each other:
Firstly, in the past week, I have had a significant number of kernel panics (i.e. more than 5). An example is included below.
Before the 10.8.1 upgrade, I can't recall a single kernel panic. In all instances, the panic appears to be related to coreaudiod (specifically, something to do with com.apple.iokit.IOAudioFamily). From what I understand, the error is caused when trying to read from an invalid memory address (ie. type 14=page fault; and "Error code: 0x0000000000000000" indicates a read operation). That's the first problem, and it's pretty annoying as you can imagine.
Secondly, I'm also experiencing similar symptoms as described in this thread (https://discussions.apple.com/thread/4159444); where the mouse pointer can be moved around, but the keyboard and touchpad don't respond to any input, and I'm unable to do things like switch between apps or force quit apps.
Interestingly, if I click on my user name in the menu bar and select Login window…; I can login as a different user and everything is working fine for that other user session. Then if I switch back to my original user session, the keyboard & trackpad are still unresponsive and the problem persists. So, it would seem that it is not a system-wide kernel issue (such as a bad driver), otherwise you would expect it to affect all logged on users equally, no?
(Also interesting: the problem has been experienced at least once in that other user's account too, suggesting that it's not simply a bad preference or setting in my account)
Being a fairly new machine, I don't have that many 3rd party apps installed yet. Typically I'm only running Chrome, TweetDeck, Evernote, Mail.app, and Calendar.app. In the menu bar I also have Dropbox, Google Drive, Skitch and Stay (http://cordlessdog.com/stay/) running.
I'm hesitant to jump to "it must be a hardware issue", given that everything was fine for 7 weeks; and the problems only started after upgrading to 10.8.1. However, I'm surprised that if it is a 10.8.1 issue, that more people aren't reporting similar kernel panics etc. (maybe they are, and I just haven't found them). I did run AHT, but it found no problems. I have also run the Disk Utility Repair Permissions, as some people with the keyboard issue described above have suggested, but to no avail.
Finally, I'm also running a similar software combination on my 17" MBP at work (10.8.1, Chrome, TweetDeck, Evernote, Stay etc…); and I'm having none of these problems there.
I would appreciate any pointers that anybody can offer.

If it's recurrent, the possibilities are (1) a damaged OS X installation; (2) a hardware fault, which could be internal or in a wired peripheral device; and (3) an obscure bug in OS X.
You can rule out the first possibility by reinstalling the OS. Probably there will be no change. In that case, make a "Genius" appointment at an Apple Store to have the machine tested. You may have to leave it there for several days. There isn't much point in doing this unless you can reproduce the panic, or unless it happens often enough that it's likely to be repeated at the store. Otherwise you may be told that nothing is wrong.
Print the first page of the panic report and bring it with you.
Back up all data on the internal drive(s) before you hand over your computer to anyone. If privacy is a concern, erase the data partition(s) with the option to write zeros* (do this only if you know how to restore, and you have at leasttwo independent backups.) Don’t erase the recovery partition, if present.
*An SSD doesn't need to be zeroed. -
Very Odd Kernel Panic On Boot Up
I just today had a one-of-a-kind kernel panic on bootup from a completely shutdown machine. The box is a PowerMac G4, Mirrored Drive Door, dual-core 1.25 GHz, OS X 10.4.9, 512 MB factory installed RAM and 512 User-installed Ram for a total of 1GB. Have
Energized computer. Diverted attention. When I turned around to sit down and get to work, I was confronted with the following screen: There was the multi-lingual Kernel panic box on the gray screen, the "throbber" that usually rotates beneath the dark-gray Apple logo rotating away, and "overprinted" on all this was the "international no" symbol centered is a round-cornered translucent box (similar to what you see when you use the keyboard to alter the volume backing up the speaker icon), in the absolute center of the screen.
I powered down the computer and powered it up. Boot without a problem.
I then restarted the computer. Restarted flawlessly.
After using it for a little while, I did a full shut down and restart, used it for a little while, and shut down and restarted again. All these evolutions completed without failure or problems of any kind.
I've verified the startup disk successfully, SMART status is "Verified" for this hard disk, and have performed permissions repair successfully–with no indications of any permissions having to be repaired. All seems to be working normally and well.
Has anyone ever seen anything like this? I've Googled for this problem, and searched these forums, and have found nothing to compare to this.
For general edification, I've included the output of system.log for what looks like the time of the first failed boot and the boot immediately after. For the record, my two peripherals in constant use are a LaCie 60GB FW HD and a Wacom Intuos tablet, which is my primary somatic pointing device at this time–this log excerpt follows.
I cannot locate any report on this event in any kernel log. I also put the machine to sleep to check for kernel panic on wakeup from sleep (no problems there either). And the 512MB user-installed RAM is a Crucial memory module that has been in use for at least a year with no problems.
Thanks in advance for any insights.
Sam Klein.
