Kernel Parameter (to do or not to do)
I have seen numerous threads about the Kernel Parameters, however
there seem to be a disagreement if it should be modified on Linux
or if it should not be modified.
Does anyone knows has an answer on this one. If it has to be
modified in the /usr/include/asm/shmparam.h file what are the
exact changes to be done. For example, there is no SHMMNI
define in that file, do I simply add the SHMMNI or what else.
Thanks
Clement

When everything is running well is the time to update.
Updating when your Mac is having problems is a recipe for disaster and then you arrive at this worldwide online hospital for sick Macs
Back up > Remove iPods, spare HDs and assorted peripherals > Download Combo updater from Apple > Restart > Then install and be patient through two Automatic restarts.

Could not update the kernel parameter when oracle 10g Installation.
Hi,
I tried to update ip_local_port_range in sysctl.conf file.
vi /etc/sysctl.conf
net.ipv4.ip_local_port_range=1024 65000
After changing the value i executed following command,
sysctl -p
Error : Unknown error 22 setting key 'net.ipv4.ip_local_port_range'
Please helpYou didn't specify if you are on a linux based OS, it looks like you are, but it would be so kind on your side if you clearly specify the OS version and which DB version you are planning to install.
When I perform installations of DB10gR2 on OEL4/OEL5 or RHEL4/RHEL5 i issue this commands:
echo net.ipv4.ip_local_port_range = 1024 65000 >> /etc/sysctl.conf
Once the kernel parameter have been set, the kernel must be re-read with the /sbin/sysctl -p command.

Profile parameter icm/host_name_full is not set correctly
Hi All,
I am working on Solution Manager 4.0. When I execute TCODE "SOLUTION_MANAGER", it gives the following error:
Profile parameter icm/host_name_full is not set correctly (see long text)
When I click on "Long Text", it gives me the following message widow:
Message Number: SOL_GRAPHIC002
Diagnosis
The graphic cannot be displayed, since the profile parameter icm/host_name_full is not set correctly.
Procedure
Set the profile parameter icm/host_name_full correctly.
For more information, see SAP Notes 434918 and 677118.
I have referred to both the notes above. In note# 434918, it says that I need latest kernel patch (which is 150).Also the icm/host_name_full parameter parameter was not there in Solution Manager, so I created in the following manner:
Parameter Name =icm/host_name_full
Parameter Value=smgdcs1s.example.com
But however, the error continues to be the same.
Kindly help me asap.
Thanks in advance.
Regards,
FaisalHi Markus,
Earlier the profile was activated and server was also restarted. However, it was not efffective.
Now once again i have activated the profile and restared the server. Now I am able to see the profile and it value in

What is the resource control corresponding to each kernel parameter
Hi
I am trying to prepare (i.e. tune) a Solaris 10 instance for an Oracle 10g install using a Solaris 10 project.
I am new to using Solaris 10 project resource controls so I might get some of this totally wrong.
I know all of the "old" kernel parameter names: what each represents and its' required value and I know some of the corresponding resource controls but not all of them.
That is I do not know the resource control corresponding to each and all of the kernel parameters.
e.g. I know:
semsys:seminfo_semmsl == process.max-sem-nsems == The maximum number of sempahores that can be in one semaphore set
shmsys:shminfo_shmmax == project.max-shm-memory == The maximum size(in bytes) of a single shared memory segment
shmsys:shminfo_shmmni == project.max-shm-ids == The number of shared memory identifiers
But I do not know, for example, what resource control corresponds to:
semsys:seminfo_semmns == The number of semaphores in the system
Is there a list somewhere of the resource control corresponding to each of the kernel parameters ?
I know I can set some kernel parameters in /etc/system but that should only be used for system - wide kernel parameters, right ?
I know there are project, process, task and zone classes of resource controls.
Can a resource control of any and all of these types be set in a project ?
Are zone resource controls equivalent to system-wide resource controls ?
Are there corresponding resource controls to all kernel parameters e.g. such as noexec_user_stack ?
I have set noexec_user_stack in /etc/system.
And finally - just to be sure - using a project makes the resource control values permanent, right ?
Thanks

Best Friends
Recently added new hardware to a production server, before I had:
06 cpu
24 Gb Mem
Now you have:
08 cpu
32Gb Mem
After that, evaluate SGA Delk increase server area was very small, the area now has 8GB SGA
The parameters to increase in this activity increased SGA were:
Before Now
sga_max_size 03Gb 08Gb
db_cache_size 02Gb 04Gb
SHARED_POOL_SIZE 816Mb 2.4Gb
shared_pool_reserved_size 84Mb 245 Mb
What I'm not clear is the following,:
After increasing CPU and memory on the server and then adjust these parameters of the SGA, I have to adjust or increase any kernel parameter value??Hi Friends,
That's the point, I know the parameters needed depending on the SAP installation should have some defaults.
But here, after increasing CPU and memory, there is also some connection to increase certain parameters at the kernel level?
I do not know.
So my consuls, if I increase some kernel parameters.
Thank you for your attention -
Confirm that SHMMAX kernel parameter is set datastore size
Hi,
I'm getting below exception when i'm trying to create datastore. The error is complaining about failure to create shared memory segment.
I did go through the T-10 documentation and various post on this forum, and have made sure that the OS and the DSN settings are as per the recommended values. The values meets(or rather exceeds) the minimum values.
The values are based on below formulas:
kernel.shmmax (in bytes) = Should be >= PermSize + TempSize + LogBufMB +~50MB overhead
kernel.shmall (in pages) = Should be >= ceil ( SHMMAX / PAGE_SIZE)
SwapTotal (in KB) = Swap space should generally be at least 1.5x total physical memory size. It should be sufficient to allow allocation of a large enough shared memory segment
TempSize (in MB) = Should be >= 40 MB + ceiling( PermSize / 8 MB)
I have pasted below following things. Please, can any one help me resolve this issue.

VedHi,
On continuing my debugging steps, if checked the limits for IPC facility.
ipcs -m -l
------ Shared Memory Limits --------
max number of segments = 4096
max seg size (kbytes) = 32768
max total shared memory (kbytes) = 8388608
min seg size (bytes) = 1
This says that "max number of segments = 4096", where as the kernel parameter is defined as "kernel.shmall = 4294967296".
Am i correct in understanding that "max number of segments" is same as "kernel.shmall" and the values should be same.
Also, it says that "max seg size (kbytes) = 32768" ie around 32MB, where as the kernel parameter is defined as "kernel.shmmax = 68719476736" i.e around 64BG.
and since, the DSN is requesting to create shared memory segment of 128MB, which is greater that 32MB(as per max seg size (kbytes) = 32768), Timesten is throwing the error.
Thanks everyone for helping me out.

RH Linux vm.swappiness kernel parameter
The linux kernel parameter vm.swappiness affects the tendency of the OS to swap. It has a range from 0 to 100, with 0 causing swapping to occur only when needed and 100 to swap more aggressively. The default setting is 60.
There is little information available regarding an appropriate setting for this for Oracle RAC nodes. Do any of you have experience with swappiness? I have seen a few articles which recommend setting it to zero (0).
Best regards,
BillOur systems administrator have inquired about this parameter. I am not fixated on this and do not suffer from compulsive tuning disorder.
You, on the other hand, are obviously compulsive about too many of the wrong things. I'm sure everyone loves working with you... -
Maximu Shared Memory (shmmax kernel parameter)
Hi,
in all Unix Installation documents...
shmmax kernel parameter to be set as the Half of the Physical RAM.
per suppose...if we have 6 GB Ram...cant we increase the SGA size to 5 GB........does it make sense...or any other ....this is the Apps Database with 10g..no other database on this machine....
anywork arounds .....It depends on your exact Unix OS and if your database is 32 or 64 bit. I would not advise setting SGA to 5GB on a 6 GB machine as you leave almost nothing for the OS, nor PGA/UGA shadow processes. If you have more than like 10 connections, I would set the SGA to no more than 2 or 3 GB, then have a 1 GB pga_aggregate_target.

Hello -
I'm running Oracle 10g R2 on Solaris 10. Does anyone know how to set the shmmax kernel parameter? According to Oracle documention, all kernel parms have been deprecated except for shmmax, but I believe this is stored and set in a different location on Solaris 10.
ThanksA lot of kernel parameters, including SHMMAX, were replaced in Solaris 10 by resource controls.
you can check

Linux: Kernel Preemption, To Enable Or Not To Enable
The default 2.6.4 Arch Linux kernel .config has 'CONFIG_PREEMPT=y'.
Not everyone has been happy with kernel preemption, however. There is an interesting discussion of this under the title "Linux: Kernel Preemption, To Enable Or Not To Enable at http://kerneltrap.org/node/view/2702
The text of the article is repeated here:
"A recent bug report on the lkml complained of significant performance degradation from enabling CONFIG_PREEMPT, kernel preemption. 2.6 kernel maintainer Andrew Morton [interview] pointed out that such degradation from enabling kernel preemption is not normal, instead likely from it triggering a bug. However, an interesting conversation on the merits of kernel preemption followed.
Andrea Arcangeli, author of the 2.4 virtual memory subsystem, bluntly suggested, "keep preempt turned off always, it's useless. Preempt just wastes cpu with tons of branches in fast paths that should take one cycle instead." Andrew Morton noted, "preempt is overrated." However, he went on to point out that kernel preemption has been very useful in detecting locking bugs. He added, "it has been demonstrated that preempt improves the average latency. But not worst-case, because those paths tend to be under spinlock."
Robert Love [interview] replied directly to Andrea's comments saying, "I think you are really blowing the overhead of kernel preemption out of proportion," going on to agree with Andrew's statements. He further explained:
"I also feel you underestimate the improvements kernel preemption gives. Yes, the absolute worst case latency probably remains because it tends to occur under lock (although, it is now easier to pinpoint that latency and work some magic on the locks). But the variance of the latency goes way down, too. We smooth out the curve. And these are differences that matter."
There is more discussion and feedback with the article (including the original bug report).I like preemption. it the "democracy" heaven of processes and threads. This post was interesting, but the point is this bug..?
if the bug is found, who can say that preemption in the kernel is not a good idea?
thanks for posting though ;P -
Kernel parameter tuning in Solaris 10
Hi Guru's
Can you any one help me to find the some good docs for Solaris kernel tuning. How to change the kernel parameter online?
How to do kernel tuning in online and what is the purposre of /etc/system and sysdef command.
How I can search for exisiting kernel value.
Thanks in advance.

Dynamic parameter selection from infoview not storing the sql password
We are having the problem of dynamic parameter selection from infoview not storing the sql password as it does for the actual report. We are using Crystal Reports XI Release 2 version 11.5.3.438 (Not sure of SP level, asked in separate thread).
To be more specific.
We have created a report that dynamically populates the parameters of the report by pulling the records from the Informix sql database and allowing selection from there.
In the Central Management Console for the report object we have set as follows:
Process - Database:
Use original database logon information from the report - the sql username and pw etc
Use same database logon as when report is run
Process - Parameters
In selecting a default selection there is the option to put in the sql password, however, this does not stick and clears after update.
As such the end result is that every time this report is run from infoview and a user chooses a parameter (there are 5), crystal goes through some timeout for about a minute or so and then requests the sql password, if a user then selects the next parameter, the same timeout and password dialog appears.
We need the crystal report to handle to the sql password for fetching the parameters as well as for the database section of running the report, however, the parameters insists on the end user always putting the password in.
This is 100% replicatable on our system.
Any way that we can fix this?
Will an update fix this issue? If so could you please advise which one?
ThanksHi,
I am having the exact same problem. Any help?
And what does "Use same database logon as when report is run" mean? For me that would be that no prompt is needed for getting values in a dynamic parameter...

Rlim_fd_max Kernel Parameter on Solaris 9
I am trying to install Oracle Application Server 10g Release 2 on Solaris 9. The installation errors out on the "Select Configuration Options" screen with the following error:
"Oracle Application Server 10g Web Cache requires the Kernel Parameter rlim_fd_max to be set to a value of 65536 or higher. Please set rlim_fd_max to 65536 or higher, reboot the machine and restart the installation".
I checked the value of the set rlim_fd_max Kernel Parameter prior to starting the install and it is set to 65536. Does anyone know why I'm getting this error? Thanks in advance!I was able to get an answer by opening a SR with Metalink. The problem was that even though the rlim_fd_max default on Solaris 9 is 65536, it must be in the /etc/system file. Must be the installer looks at the file to determine that it is set correctly. So, adding set rlim_fd_max=65536 and set rlim_fd_cur=1024 to the /etc/system file fixed the problem.
