Keyboard backlight, on/off/auto

how can we just have the keyboard backlight on high all the time,
on mines, it goes on, off, then blocked (with the little circle barred) etc,
any one experiencing these habits also?
how to regulate this? do i need the keyboard update to fix it I guess?
thanx in advance

The problem is that you can't set the keyboard light to on. The computer controls on or off, and all you can actually somewhat control is the brightness but only when the computer turns it on.

  • MBP keyboard backlight turns off when itunes changes songs

Anyone else encountered this? I turned off all of my iTunes related plug-ins and add-ons and it still happens. Whenever the song changes or I play/pause iTunes, my backlight goes off. Is this a 'feature'?

That sounds rather odd. I always have Itunes on and it never happened to me, are you sure that it is not some weird coincidence? Is it only happening when you have iTunes on??

  • Keyboard Backlighting - time-out / auto turn-off

Is there a way to enable automatic time-out of the Steelseries backlit keyboard (GT70)? Or is it supposed to stay on all the time while the computer is awake?

Hi, as I know MSI SSE is OEM customize version based on the generic SSE, http://steelseries.com/, since the native SSE doesn't have such feature, it is reasonable that MSI version doesn't have time-out feature, either.  You can also submit such proposal on SSE website, maybe they would consider to adapt such feature in newer version.

  • MacBook Pro keyboard backlight not switching off

I recently bought a 13" MacBook Pro (2012, 2.9GHz i7) and it came with Mountain Lion preinstalled. The keyboard backlight isn't behaving as I had expected: when the "Adjust keyboard brightness in low light" option is checked, it does indeed adjust the brightness of the backlight when ambient light levels change. However even when the ambient light is VERY bright (desk lamp shining down) the backlight doesn't switch off; instead it just goes to full brightness. I understand that the backlight usually dims in dark conditions to save battery, but why would it go bright when the keyboard is fully visible without a backlight? Is there a way to make the keyboard backlight go off when there is plenty of background light and come on when the environment is dark?
Thanks in advance for any advice.

Auto brightness operation usually works in the way yours is working.  It is dimmer in very low light and progressively gets brighter as the ambient light increases.  There are cases where this is actually helpful as in wierd backlighting situations.
You can override in the System Settings and from the keyboard "function" keys.  I'm not at my MBP right now, but I think the keyboard backlighting controls are somewhere near F5 and F6.

  • HT1338 Keyboard Backlight Issue

    Hi Everyone,
I was recently advised to reinstall Lion due to long start-up times. After reinstalling, I noticed that the keyboard backlight was no longer working. I have read many other threads advising what to do but this is what I have done as far:
    Reset SMC and PRAM
Cover iSight to establish the ALS is working (it is)
Use the F5/F6 keys to change the intensity - these work because the graphic comes up when I press them but they have no effect on the backlight
    Installed LabTick (had no effect)
Even after all of this my keyboard backlight remains off.
I would really appreciate help into my issue.
    Thanks.

Hi, zrosignal - Try creating a new user account, then log in to that account and see if the problem repeats itself. If the keyboard backlighting works as expected in the new account, log back in to your original user account and go to yourusername/Library/Preferences and delete the file com.apple.BezelServices.plist, then log out and back in again or restart and see if the problem is fixed.
If the issue repeats itself in the new account you create, then you may have a hardware problem (which is probably no more serious than a loose cable connection).
    Let us know what happens.
    Good luck!

  • Keyboard backlight not auto dimming

Just got a new MacBook Air.  I have the auto dim option checked in the keyboard settings but the keyboard backlight just remains on all the time.
    Any ideas?

First off, very good troubleshooting, it is refreshing to have someone who provides more information other than "it don't work".
I assume since you said no boot key combinations work that it wouldn't boot to safe mode.
You did say you were able to hold option and select the Mac HD, does your recovery partition show up here? Are you able to boot to recovery? Also, are you able to get back into Windows at this point?

  • Macbook keyboard backlight auto turn-on when room is dark?

I have a late 2013 13" Retina Macbook Pro (running Mavericks) and am a relatively new OSX user. I know that I can modify keyboard backlight settings and have the brightness level adjust automatically (similar to how the screen brightness adjusts) however I don't actually want the keyboard's backlight on when the room is light. The fact that the auto-adjust setting makes the keyboard brighter in a light room is annoying to me.
Is there any way to have the backlight automatically turn on ONLY when the room is BELOW a certain brightness threshold. Perhaps there is a 3rd party app that can add this functionality? Manually pressing F5 and F6 works fine, but ideally I'd like to have this automated somehow.
    Thanks!

Billy_budd,   Unfortunately it's not even that things are finicky for me. I haven't experienced any auto-turnon functionality at all. Are you running Mavericks? I've seen some older posts referring to this being a possibility. Is there a specific way you've enabled this option? I don't see anything in my settings.
If I select the tickbox I've highlighted in the screenshot below, the brightness of the keyboard mimicks the auto-audjust behaviour of the screen's backlight. With it unchecked, I have to use F5 or F6 to see any keyboard brightness changes. I haven't experienced the keyboard automatically turning on when the lights turn off.

    Hi!
    I wrote from Turkey.
My Early 2008 MacBookPro 2.40 ghz 4 gb Ram OSX Mavericks machine's keyboard backlight off and fans run at high speed; it seems an exact smc resetting problem.
So i tried the 2 ways of SMC restting procedure; both battery you can move and not, but nothings changed on the situation..
On the way for removable battery; nothing changed but on the way for umremovable battery way; keyboard backlight flashes and gone, but fans are at high speed not changed. So nothing changed.
What can i do right now? i'll wait for your advices
    Thanks

Your Mac may need a new PRAM battery.  Once it is over 4 years old, that often is needed.

  • How do you turn keyboard backlight off in silverlight?

    HI,
My settings are for the backlight on my keyboard to go off after 30 seconds of non-use but when I watch films using silverlight, the light won't go off. I have contacted Lovefilm and they gave me instructions for uninstalling then reinstalling but it still won't switch off. Any ideas? It's getting on my nerves big time. Thanks

    Hi esther40,
If your keyboard backlight isn't dimming on no activity when using Silverlight, you may want to try manually adjusting the backlight in those cases using the F5 and F6 keys. You may find the following article helpful:

  • New owner of MBP, why can't you turn off the keyboard backlight in Win 7?

I'm a new owner of MBP. I have Windows 7 64bits installed on bootcamp. The keyboard backlight is really bothering me. I thought Boot Camp was out for awhile, and I don't know why can't Apple fix this backlight control thing? I downloaded that power assistant software and I liked it; however, I was turned off that it wasn't a freeware. What can I do to turn this backlight off permanently?

Well... seems like pre-2010 MBPs all had 'non-disablable' keyboard backlights on Windows. Installing BC 3.1 won't help at all. You could temporary minimize backlight level, but not turn it off. And on just any ambient light change it jumps back to maximum. Extremely erratic
A friend of mine got a 2010 MBP and he's able to turn backlight off. I've got mid-2009 model with BC 3.1, and I can't. My another friend has late-2008 model, he can't turn the backlight off, either.
I agree, ideally powerplan7 should have been a freeware. However, although I did spend $10 on a key, I'm oh-so-happy right now. With backlight disabled And since there are no alternatives AT ALL, I'm glad they're not selling this software for, say, $25.

  • Keyboard backlight off when pause ITunes.

got a new MacBook Pro recently and just now noticing something pretty odd...
if iTunes is playing and I hit the play/pause key (F8) the entire keyboard will go dark, but only if I'm pausing. it doesn't do it when I'm hitting the button to resume a song, only when I'm using it to pause one. the backlight sometimes takes minutes to come back on, at random, and sometimes it doesn't and I just have to turn it back on myself.
I've found that it's not just the shortcut keys — the backlighting turns off even when I go into iTunes and press the spacebar to pause or just press the actual button in iTunes. pretty odd, haha.
    any ideas?
    thanks!

  • Pausing iTunes Turning Off Keyboard Backlight

got a new MacBook Pro recently and just now noticing something pretty odd...
whenever I pause a song in iTunes, be it by pressing spacebar while the application is active, hitting the actual button in iTunes, or using the shortcut keys on the keyboard itself, the keyboard backlighting always cuts off. it comes back on at random intervals, and sometimes not all.
I've even tired re-installing iTunes. it's a pretty odd problem, heh...
    any ideas?
    thanks!

Is it doing it like this?:

I'm guessing you too have the "iSpazz" plugin installed in your iTunes folder. If so remove it and your problem will be fixed. as far as I know, there is no way to keep the plug in in there without causing this problem. Its a pain, but the only way I found is to put the plug in in there when I want to show off the keyboard, and take it out when I'm done.
    Hope this helps

  • How can I turn off or dim the keyboard backlight?

I have a new HP Envy 14 Ultrabook.  It has a backlit keyboard.  I know many people like that "feature", but I don't.  I assumed it would be easy to turn off the light in the control panel (e.g., in the device's settings), but there is no option.  I can hit the F5 key to turn off the general lighting, but then that F5 key glows blindingly bright all the time.  I want to either completely disable the keyboard backlights, or equivalently set the light level to be dim to the point of being completely off.  But I can't find any setting to do that in the power options, device properties, etc.  Nor has this question been satisfactorily answered in any other forums that I could find.  Thanks in advance for your help.

I haven't tried this on a laptop but I've used it on all kinds of too-bright led's like on the electric toothbrush or the HEPA filter or modem, etc.: Take some nail polish and paint the bulb. A dark color or lighter color depending on how much light you want to block. Sometimes I paint the lights on things completely with dark nail polish and I've never had it cause a problem.
Since the bulb doesn't put out that much lumens it shouldn't hurt it and the worst case scenario would be that the bulb burns out and you replace it, or at least I think that would be the worst case scenario. On my Pavilion the f5 button turns the backlight on and off just fine though the power button is a bit too bright. I may paint it with nail polish. That said, when I do turn my backlight on using f5, it is much too bright and I really wish HP would make this adjustable. Why the heck wouldn't they?? I could paint that light but I really don't want to open up my computer, I'm superstitious that way.

  • Keyboard backlight doesn't turn on auto in dark

hi i bought macbook pro retina 13(osx mavericks) few days back i observed that my keyboard backlight doesn't turn on auto in dark i have to manually turn it on every time so i want to know whether apple has removed this auto turn on in new mavericks or is i m having a issue with my keyboard

Auto keyboard backlight still exists: System Preferences -> Keyboard -> "Adjust keyboard brightness in low light". Is that option selected? If so, deselect and select it again. If that doesn't work: Intel-based Macs: Resetting the System Management Controller (SMC)
