Keyboard characters question

Hi People
I 'd like to exclude printed characters such as ENTER, BACKSPACE, Alt, Ctrl and such (Cause they do get printed on disabled fields).
How do I detect such characters using the Character Class, with the KeyEvent interface it's straightforward, yet inefficient since I'd have to test for every field constants that I want to exclude. But are those types of keys under one, common, set like digits and letters are, in the Character class ? I could not find it.
Thanks

ENTER, BACKSPACE, Alt, Ctrl and such (Cause theydo
get printed on disabled fields). We got no idea what you're talking about here. First
of all Alt and Ctrl don't get printed on anything as
far as I'm aware disabled or not. I meant to say disabled textfield. I was just as surprised as you are when I saw that. Basically, I have 2 input fields for two persons' addresses. When I select a check box say "Use same address" the second person's address field is disabled and to show the user that, in fact, the same address is used, I capture every character printed in the first person's address field and transmit it to the second field after I disabled it. So as the user types the address in the enabled field, he sees the exact same reproduction in the second one.
Enter is basically a character like anything else so I don't know why
that would be getting rendered and no other
characters and backspace? What does backspace get
rendered to?Well, maybe on your box it doesn't show up but when I press any non-letter ,non-digit keys and non-ascii chars in general, in the first address textfield (like Alt, Ctrl, Tab, Caps Lock, the list is not exhaustive) they show up as squares! in the second address textfield (remember it's disabled). So they do get printed. Maybe the String class omits them or smthg when parsing the characters, but the user can see them. And that's what I want to avoid. Now I can do a bunch of "if'" in my keyPressed method that will test for KeyEvent.VK_ENTER, VK_BACKSPACE, and all of those that I want to exclude but how inefficient is that ??

  • Feature Request: Support pasting text as a stream of keyboard characters

Please support pasting text as a stream of keyboard characters from a menu click rather than just relying on the remote server clipboard integration.
Often I'm in a situation where the remote desktop integration with the clipboard is disabled. E.g. password change screens. I use a local password manager to create and maintain passwords. These are often ridiculously complex to type. Sometimes they need
to be sent over the wire as characters rather than as a clipboard transfer message. This client doesn't allow this to work and makes it painful to remain secure.
    Please make this less painful.

    Hi Josh,
Thanks for your feedback. But can you let us know which version of MRD client you are using on which device as to clarify and research more regarding your case.
Thanks for your understanding and Support!

  • Keyboard characters are  no displaying correctly

    MacBook
    Version 10.6.8
My keyboard is not displaying the correct characters. The letters and numbers are OK but characters such as the question mark, colon, the at sign, etc do not display correctly. I've tried a portable keyboard and the same thing happens.
The software is Microsoft Office 2011 for mac. Is this a software problem?

    Hi vdalbora,
It sounds like another key is being pressed while you are typing. Check out the article below and look at the section for showing the Keyboard Viewer to make sure that when typing, that the right keys are being pressed.
One or more keys on the keyboard do not respond

  • Terminal keyboard shortcut question

Hello. I'm asking this question on behalf of a tech who works in our school. He would like to know what the keyboard shortcut on a Mac is to take you to the end of a line or the beginning of a line. (Apparently on a pc it is the home and end keys but on the Mac that takes him back to the very start of to the very end.) Sorry if this is a silly question.
    Jenny

The standard keys to move to end of line is Ctrl-E.
Ctrl-A will take you to the beginning of the line
Other useful control characters include Ctrl-T (transpose two characters) and Ctrl-U (erase line)

  • Keyboard characters display option

Is there a way to get my keyboard to show non-letter characters (! , " ? & etc.) as a press-and-hold option, without switching to the 123 keyboard? My HTC Incredible did this, and so does my friend's Galaxy S-III, which is about 1-2 months older than mine. Thanks!

        ddegrazio,
You know, you pose a great question, however there isn't a way to get to the non letter characters without pressing the 123 multiple times.

  • Jampack and keyboard connection questions

    2 questions:
    1. I have just bought GB Jampack (the one with lots of extra loops), but can't seem to notice any difference. How do I know that the disc has downloaded OK? Can't remember how many loops were there in the first place!
    2. I'm trying to connect an Roland SK-50 Soundcanvas keyboard. Do I need some sort of interface or drivers before it will work?
Very basic questions, I know, but hey, that's what this discussion group is for isn't it?!
    Regards
    Mark

How do I know that the disc has downloaded OK?
If you bought the JamPack DVD you didn't download anything. Did you run the installer on the JamPack DVD?
To see just loops from your JamPack disc, open the Loop Browser and click on the top bar where it likely says "Loops" with a double arrow, and select "JamPack 1". Then only loops from the JamPack will show in the loop browser.
    Re: the Keyboard
What kind of conection doesd it have? All I could find was " complete with direct Mac or PC connection" and "Connections: MIDI In, MIDI Out, MIDI Thru, Line In (LR), Line Out (LR), Computer port, and 1/8" stereo headphones jack."
"Computer Port" isn't very specific. Is it a USB connection? You might need to find a driver for it. Does the Manual say anything about installing software to make it work?

  • Unexpected keyboard characters

    Hi,
Last year I accidentally produced a strange little item. Somehow in hitting shift or caps lock , the side of a stray finger hit "something" & I had a symbol resembling the Grateful Dead's "fish-thingy" in a square. I'd reproduce it now, but not knowing how I did it is at the root of my question !
Just now a similar "clumsy moment" produced this guy --> ÅM .

Where are these guys hiding, & how does stumble into them intentionally ?

    Hi DmR,
You can see all the characters for any font installed on your system by using the Character Palette. To enable it, go to System Preferences and choose International. Then, select Input Menu in the bar at the top and look at the bottom of the window. There will be a little option box that says "show input menu in menu bar." Check it.
You will see a flag show up in the menu bar. Click on this flag and choose Character Palette. From there you can see all the "hidden" characters available.

  • IBook G4 Keyboard Replacement Question

I need to replace the keyboard on my iBook G4 14" 1.42GHz which I bought in Sep 2005.
However, I can't figure out which replacement keyboards online are compatible.
The bar code number on the keyboard is KY5322DDTGKA.
I see sellers saying that their replacement keyboards are compatible with p/n 922-6637, 922-6189, 922-6913, PBF8415 for instance. I can't figure out though if my iBook is compatible with this.
Can someone give me the correct Apple part number for a replacement keyboard that is compatible with my iBook?
    Thanks

    mac-question:
    Welcome to Apple Discussions.
iFixit lists Apple part numbers, then says, this keyboard works in all G4 14" iBooks.
PowerBook Medic also suggests the part is interchangeable.
PowerBookTech offers these links which you can check out.
Be sure you call or email and ask questions before you buy, to be sure you are getting the right part.

  • General Characters Question

    Hi all,
20 years ago, i was using Mac Classic OS (from 6.x to 9.x) and MS.Windows, both for many targets and using many softwares...
i type in MS Word in windows for example... and when i try to transfer what i typed for my mac, i faced problems... the characters is not written as i typed them ... and they r not a good characters ...
    and vise versa ...
especially when i type in other than English... Arabic for example .. a lot of problems, in Many levels :
1- in the level of transferring the text from win to mac and vise versa..
2- in the level of Mac browsres (finally Safari under 10.4 and 10.5 solved the problem)..
3- in the level of mac itself... for example many files was written under Classic softwares are now UNreadable under my 10.5OSX..
4- in the level of the names of the files and folders themself.... a lot of folders on my HD was named under Classic (in Arabic characters) are now UNreadable, then i must switch to OS9 each time i need to know what some folder is...
    5- Many other levels...
Now, my question is Not to fix all these problems...
i like to learn about the KIND of characters and how each OS deals with them, and what each OS use as Characters..
i have some ideas about the stuff since i was in University studing DOS 20 years ago ... i still have in my memory some titles and names (like Aski code and others).. i think this is the point...! ??
Please advice me about a link or any web tutorial or help, where i can learn SHORTLY all the factors of this problem..
for example : What Mac OSX uses as characters? Classic and Windows?? how Arabic or other characters are interpretted on this OS??
why i face these problems and how to solve them?
How can i know what KIND of characters a software uses when i open and use it???
Please link me to a VERY SHORT but VERY USEFUL help webpage or other ..
    Many Thanks

The main issue is that OS X and all other modern OS's use Unicode. OS 9 and older Windows stuff uses "legacy" encodings.
TextEdit can be used to open certain kinds of docs in one encoding and convert them to another.
Apple made a utility especially for the filename problem:
    http://www.apple.com/support/downloads/filenameencodingrepairutility.html
    These links may help:
    http://homepage.mac.com/thgewecke/mlingos9.html
    http://homepage.mac.com/thgewecke/TypingArabic.html
Another issue is that MS Word for Mac cannot do Arabic, and only a special version of Adobe apps can do it.
If you have any specific questions after reading this, just ask.

  • Third-party keyboard security question

    Hello everyone,
Apple says that third-party keyboard developers have access to all of the data user types. Then it says "If you enable Full Access", developers are permitted to access, collect and transmit the data you type".
    So my questions are:
    1. Do developers have access to the data I type with full access enabled or no?
    2. If I'm using apple keyboard but third-party keyboard is installed do they still have access to the data I type?
For example: When I access to my credit card I will use apple keyboard but while I'm chat in Facebook or watsApp I use third-party keyboard. Do they(Third-party keyboard devs) have access to my credit card password?

NO.  The 3rd party keyboard is only communicating with your iPad.

  • Keyboard Characters in Other Languages

    Hi,
Because I'm starting to forget my first language, Spanish, I decided to turn my system into Spanish. Now, the only problem I have is that a few characters that do appear in English, don't appear in the Spanish layout, such as the "@" sign (I had to go to Edit>Special Characters) to get that sign. Is there an easier way to get that type of symbol in the keyboard?
    Thanks
    Alex

If you want to change the way the Spanish layout works, you can make a custom layout with Ukelele:
    http://scripts.sil.org/cms/scripts/page.php?siteid=nrsi&itemid=ukelele
By the way, there is no need to use the Spanish layout to type Spanish. The US layout can make all the Spanish special characters via Option/alt shortcuts. Here is a list:

  • German keyboard/ characters

I'm a really new mac user! I need to be able to type German accents EASILY and can't figure out how to do this? Reset my keyboard or ... HELP!

    Hi, Fortuna1 -
    Welcome to Apple's Discussions.
    Two assumptions I'll make -
    (1) That you are using Mac OS 9 (since that's the forum in which you posted)
    (2) That you are after the umlaut characters and the funny double-S
If you currently have the US English Keyboard Layout active, you can do the umlaut by pressing the key-combo Option-u followed by the character you want. Works with capitals, tooExamples -
    Option-u plus a types ä
    Option-u plus e types ë
    Option-u plus i types ï
    Option-u plus o types ö
    Option-u plus u types ü
    Option-u plus y types ÿ
    Option-u plus A types Ä
    (etc.)
For the ß character, press Option-s. I think this may actually be a capital beta (Greek letter), but it bears a close resemblence to the old German character.
    <hr>
You can also reset the keyboard to a German keyboard layout. This makes accessing some German and European characters easier, but means having to learn a new pattern for the keys. If you want to try that, make sure that German is checkmarked in the list in the Keyboard control panel. Once more than one language is checkmarked in that control panel, a small flag icon will be added to the main menubar, which represents the keyboard language menu. You can then use that new menu to select the language layout you want activre. You can use the utility Key Caps (usually found in the Apple menu) to see what's where in the new layout.

  • JTextArea & non-keyboard characters

    Hi,
I have a couple of queries relating to using a JTextArea....
    i) I've created a JTextArea to use as a 'logs' window, and placed it in a JScrollPane. I expected that adding text with the append() method would keep the latest text in view, but in fact I have to scroll manually to see the latest text. How can I make this scroll-to-end-on-append automatic?
ii) I'd like to display simple non-keyboard letters (like an accented 'e' \u0233) but this doesn't seem to work. I used something like Font envfonts[] = gEnv.getAllFonts() then looped through with envfonts.canDisplay('\u0233') but this returned false for all available fonts. What else should I be doing to make these characters displayable?

    i) well, i have had that first problem myself, i tryedd to scroll it down using scrollbar, every time some text was added, but last line was not visible still.
but. recently (yesterday maybe) i looked at some simple a chat-client code, and it had implemented this feature by seting caret position to the end of document.
    it seemed to work.
anyhow, this scrolling thing is with AWT components somewhat op sys dependent (it scrolls automatically on some os's and it doesn't on others), at least it used to be at 1999...
    anyhow, a snipet:
mOutputArea.setCaretPosition(mOutputArea.getDocument().getLength());ii) i believe it might be done when you use JEditorPane and some HTMLKit on it, so you could present your number in such way &u0233; and maybe this component will know how to write it out.
but on this i'm not sure...
you could also try to show it on JTextArea with different fonts, maybe this canDisplay() has a bug in it?

  • Keyboard layout question

Out of interest, is there an easy way to make/print/download or otherwise obtain a visual keymap for the Mackbook - what keys do what with given modifiers etc?
I know you can use the keyboard viewer, I was thinking of something hardcopy for a visual reference.
On that note, can anyone tell me what fn-6 on the UK keyboard (a sort of square box with a superimposed 'x') is for?
    Thanks in advance.

    Hey there henripla,
I compared your keyboard to a great list i found on wikipedia, I believe it most closely resembles a Portuguese Brazilian Keyboard. Looking at it key for key, it is an exact match with the exception of the E key. Hope this helps!
Oh and also just to help, here's the part list for the T420 keyboard!
