Keyboard doesn't respond at login window... works in Single User mode

I have a G4 xServe (server 10.3) that won't accept keyboard input at login window, but the same keyboard, usb port, works fine when I'm booted into Single User Mode.
Booting into Single User mode, something interesting gets posted during boot:
"AppleCPUThermo got unsupported command"
Any thoughts?

Did you find a resolution to this issue? After I installed the latest security update to OSX Server 10.4.8 I am now experiencing the same problem. Any insight would be greatly appreciated.

  • Mounting Windows Disk within Single User Mode

A Windows machine I administer kacked and the users didn't back up all their data. Windows won't touch the drive, so I popped it in a 10.3.9 Mac... I can copy a handful of files and folders from the Finder, but some directories won't read -- there may be physical damage to the drive (if the kernel panics are any indication).
When I boot into Single User Mode, I can't get into the disk.... the disk(s) show up under /Volumes, but you can't actually get into them... only a file named .autodiskmounted shows up for each Windows partition. I'm guessing this is a product of the disk being formatted as a NTFS drive (I'm thinking that's probably what Windows XP Home used on this drive).
Can you mount a NTFS or FAT32 disk from Single User Mode? How?
    Many thanks!

    Everett
To mount a disk in 10.3.9, look at the first part of this FAQ: Resetting the System Immutable Flag in 10.3.
You will need to replace the "mount -t hfs" with "mount -t msdos", but I don't know if you would need further options.
If you can find a 10.4 system, it may be easier, since "autodiskmount" appears to work again. See: kmosx4: Resetting the System Immutable Flag in OS X 10.4

  • HT1492 Single user mode not working.

Whenever I hit command-s to go into single user mode it doesn't work. I used to do it all the time to help my grandma who doesn't let me know her password, but always forgets it reset her computer. Please help!

Thank you! The thread you posted had my problem exactly, and the solution. It was the Macally keyboard, so I uninstalled the driver (and single user mode worked), and then I installed an older driver, so now my keyboard works AND single user mode works. If all of my computer problems could be so easy...

  • Keyboard completely unresponsive in single user mode

Since upgrading to v10.5.1 I have been unable to get both my Apple USB and Apple Bluetooth keyboards to work in single user mode. I can get into single user mode using the command-s keys but once there the keyboard dies. This is the only time the keyboard fails. I have no other USB device attatched. I am using the white (non-aluminum) Apple keyboards. I'm curious to see if anyone else has this issue.

It appears to have been a Bluetooth only issue. I got the USB keyboard to work in single user mode. However I had to first turn off Bluetooth before rebooting into single user mode. Originally I kept Bluetooth on before rebooting using my USB keyboard. This for some reason prevented the USB keyboard from functioning in single user mode. When I have some time I'll further troubleshoot the Bluetooth keyboard issue and report back.

  • Unable to login @ login window with Active Directory User

I successfully bound my test machine to Active Directory and can search using dscl and id. I can also su to my active directory user account an authenticate perfectly. All search bases are correct and everything else looks fine.
When I attempt to login from the login window as an AD user, the window shakes. Clicking under Mac OS X shows that "Network Accounts Available". Looks like the CLI tool "dirt" is now gone as well, although insecure it would possibly show something here.
Anyone else having issues after binding to AD? I bound using the Directory Utility gui... I have not tried using my leopard bind script yet.
    Thanks,
    Ken

I have pretty well the same problem. The machine was already bound to AD prior to upgrade. After could not login on with my account (jball). Can log on with other accounts from the same domain (we only have one AD domain). Can also su to jball in a terminal session. Can't access network resources with jball when I try to connect to a windows server through the finder, instantly comes up with bad username or password, doesn't even think about it.
I have removed any copies of the home folder under either /Users or /Domain as I have had problems with that before. Have repaired permissions and unbind and bind the machine to AD. Have been at this all day now and no closer. Get these error messages in console:
31/08/09 4:49:27 PM SecurityAgent[666] Could not get the user record for 'jball@domainname' from Directory Services
31/08/09 4:49:27 PM SecurityAgent[666] User info context values set for jball@domainname

  • Cannot display login window as "List of users"

I am running Leopard Server, and I cannot seem to get my OS to display login window as "List of users".
The option is grayed out in System Preference, and if I use Workgroup Manager to set the Login preference for this computer to "List of users able to use these computers", my computer doesn't seem to respect that. Although it does respect the "Show Restart/Shut Down button" when I turn that on/off.
I tried to edit the com.apple.loginwindow.plist in /Library/Preference, no option found for display login window.
    Help please, thanks.

The way to switch between the two options is:
    defaults write /Library/Preferences/com.apple.loginwindow SHOWFULLNAME 1
    (turn on name list)
    and
    defaults write /Library/Preferences/com.apple.loginwindow SHOWFULLNAME 0
    (turn off name list)
    and use
    defaults read /Library/Preferences/com.apple.loginwindow SHOWFULLNAME
to see what the current setting is. Note that when you use the defaults command, you omit the ",plist" on the preference file name.
As always, beware of trying to bypass measures put in place to protect you, and be careful modifying preference files since you can lock yourself out or prevent your computer from booting properly.

  • Start SQL Server in single user mode with parameter -m doesn't work well

C:\Windows\system32>net start mssqlserver /m "Microsoft SQL Server Management St

    1>
As you can see, I'm still able to connect with sqlcmd prompt to SQL Server. According production doc of SQL Server 2014, it should not be conncting by sqlcmd. it shall only be connected by SSMS.
below the original doc on msdn:
Start SQL Server in Single-User Mode
    Provide Feedback
Under certain circumstances, you may have to start an instance of SQL Server
in single-user mode by using the startup option -m. For
example, you may want to change server configuration options or recover a
damaged master database or other system database. Both actions require starting
an instance of SQL Server in single-user mode.
Starting SQL Server in single-user mode enables any member of the computer's
local Administrators group to connect to the instance of SQL Server as a member
of the sysadmin fixed server role. For more information, see Connect to
SQL Server When System Administrators Are Locked
    Out.
When you start an instance of SQL Server in single-user mode, note the
    following:
Only one user can connect to the server.
The CHECKPOINT process is not executed. By default, it is executed
    automatically at startup.
    Note
Stop the SQL Server Agent service before connecting to an instance of SQL
Server in single-user mode; otherwise, the SQL Server Agent service uses the
    connection, thereby blocking it.
When you start an instance of SQL Server in single-user mode, SQL Server
Management Studio can connect to SQL Server. Object Explorer in Management
Studio might fail because it requires more than one connection for some
operations. To manage SQL Server in single-user mode, execute Transact-SQL
statements by connecting only through the Query Editor in Management Studio, or
    use the
    sqlcmd utility.
When you use the -m option with sqlcmd or
Management Studio, you can limit the connections to a specified client
application. For example, -m"sqlcmd" limits connections to a
single connection and that connection must identify itself as the
sqlcmd client program. Use this option when you are starting
SQL Server in single-user mode and an unknown client application is taking the
only available connection. To connect through the Query Editor in Management
Studio, use -m"Microsoft SQL Server Management Studio - Query".
    Shawn

    Hi Shawn Xiao,
For starting SQL Server instance in single user mode, we can add –m; parameter in SQL Server Configuration Manager, also we can run CMD with ‘Run as administrator’ and input the following statement.
    NET START MSSQLSERVER /m
I do a test in SQL Server 2014 Express version, after starting SQL with Single User Mode, SQL Server will only accept one connection. If you connect to SQL Server with a user account, the following error will occur.
Login failed for user ‘domain\username’. Reason: Server is in single user mode. Only one administrator can connect at this time.
However, in your situation, you can connect to SQL Server and run T-SQL statement successfully, it can be due to connection with the administrator account in your sqlcmd.

  • Single user mode doesn't accept commands

Due to some kernel panics with an old G5 iMac, I wanted to run the memtest utility. After an initial test in a Terminal, I wanted to try again in single user mode, just to be sure.
Had no problem at all starting up (Cmd+S), didn't get any error messages in the boot messages. The ":/ root" prompt appears and I can enter commands. Yet no matter what I enter, I immediately get returned to the shell prompt. Command line editing works (emacs commands, clear screen etc.). Due to the lack of delay (even when e.g. entering "sleep 10"), I don't suspect it's just the output of the shell command that gets lost, it's not accepting anything at all, prompt doesn't reflect "cd" changes, nothing…
New install of Leopard, all updates applied, permissions repaired.

I can't picture what is doing this other than something missing or muxed, but perhaps it's time for a relatively painless Archive & Install, which gives you a new/old OS, but can preserve all your files, pics, music, settings, etc., as long as you have plenty of free disk space and no Disk corruption, and is relatively quick & painless...

Just be sure to select Preserve Users & Settings.

  • Boot in Single User Mode gives no keyboard control (wireless (ALU keyboard)

    Power up Mac Pro
when startup sound comes I enter cmd+s
System boots into Single User Mode
    until it displays: root#_
Now I am not able to type anything on the keyboard to display on the screen
What could be the cause of this strange behavior?
I am using the wireless apple alu keyboard with the magic mouse
Oh, I also tried this with an USB attached keyboard and I had the same result. Booting into Single User Mode went fine but then the keyboard did not do anything after once we were in Single User Mode.
Other than on this occasion the keyboard (and mouse) works fine. I've also done the latest firmware upgrades to the keyboard as well. All system software is at the latest revisions.

You may want to find *Using Tiger* forum or PPC G5 iMac; or, go back to earlier versions of Applejack (which always from my experience worked 100% on Power Macs and pre-Leopard).
AJ and SU just use Apple's diskutil and you are always better off with something like Disk Warrior, AJ/SU is handy when you don't have another drive handy to boot from or just wanted to clean up caches or something.

  • HT1492 Does anyone knows how to change the keyboard layout in single user mode, please ?

    Hello,
The question is in the title.
    Thank you.

The only way you might do it is use one of the Unix editors to edit the plist file it gets the settings from once it boots in the GUI mode.  'vi' is present in all Macs, and you might have pico, nano, emacs, or ed depending on what was installed. The keyboard layout while in single user mode itself I think is generic to where the Mac was bought and what keyboard was ordered with it, when it came from the store.  Since you posted in the 10.3 or earlier forum, chances are if this has changed, few people would know for certain.  If you have a newer Mac, say 2006 or later, you should really post in the correct forum:

  • 10.4.3 and Single User Mode, now Wireless Keyboard can

    Hello all.
IN case you haven't found out which I did, just to let you know, with the latest OS 10.4.3 update, now you can boot into Single User Mode (fsck) with your
    b wireless keyboard
and still at the same time
b continue to complete fsck process with your wireless keyboard!!
No more switching to a regular wired keyboard just to complete the process!

Hi Steven, bit unclear on a couple things.
When I went into single user mode the fans went wild. But I knew this to be normal and proceeded with repairing the disk
Normal for fans to go wild in single user or when repairing the disk?
I replicated the problem – applied the same fix and again every thing was normal.
The problem being screaming fan and the fix being resetting SMU? (unplug for 15secs). So how did you replicate it, and is it really fixed now?

  • [SOLVED] reseting su password, single user mode not working

    Hi everyone,
So I did something stupid (not on purpose obviously) and tried to move the contents of / into my home directory (using mv).
Ok not a really big deal, loaded up a live cd of mint which happened to be around and moved the everything back, rebooted and everything seemed fine.
Then tried to use sudo, and got the error "sudo: effective uid is not 0, is sudo installed setuid root?"
looks like a permissions/ownership issue of /usr/, does this sound right to people?
Anyway then tried su to change the ownership back to root. I am guessing the mint live cd took ownership of it for some reason.
But my password didn't work (neither did leaving it blank), so rebooted into single user mode and reset it and rebooted. However the authentication still fails.
I tried passwd, passwd root and passwd username for good measure but it hasn't resolved the issue. (the disk was mounted as rw)
Have i missed something obvious? What is the next thing to try?
    Thanks for any help

  • Changing user login in single user mode?

Hi my computer (server10.3) is no longer booting up (stops at the blue screen just before the login).
only 2 things have changed since last time restarted
    1) changed user login in in the prefs to automatic as my name
    2) installed a security update
I am wondering - if I can get into single user mode - whether i can change or force the login details
    thanks

    Hi John,
You can get into single user mode by depressing <Command>-s after the chime and holding it until you're in single user mode. Once you get there, I recommend that you run the following:
    /sbin/mount -uw /
    /usr/sbin/diskutil repairPermissions /
Repairing permissions is the classic first thing to do when you have problems after an update. After that, if we can help it will depend on your posting the error messages that are printed to screen before the login. If they get scrolled off the screen, you should be able to get them again with the command "dmesg".

  • Satellite P845-BKS Keyboard doesn't respond

    Hi!
I've got some problems with keyboard. It respond very slow
    or doesn't respond for pressing.
If I don't see forte scee it loos lke that.
Some keys look like not pressed.
If I press stronger situation is the same.
It necessary to check all characters and the speed of printing
    bacames too slow.
At service center master said that he doesn't see any problems.
He said that we should get used to the keyboard.
    And re-install Windows.
But I've got the same problems.
    Can anyone have any advice?

    > When can I see version of BIOS?
You can find the BIOS version within the BIOS settings.
To access the BIOS you have to press F2 while powering up the unit.
But I doubt that BIOS update would improve the keyboard functionality.
In my opinion you should test an external USB keyboard.
If the external keyboard would work properly, the issue might be related to the internal keyboard.
