Keyboard shortcut to toggle a specific layer on/off regardless of what layer you are on?

I just recently discovered the keyboard shortcut for toggling the current layer on and off and it is an incredible time saver.  Is it possible to create a keyboard shortcut dedicated to toggle a specific layer on and off regardless of what layer I am working on?  I use Photoshop for painting and I'll have a layer set up like an overlay, with my line drawing set to Multiply blending mode at about 25% opacity.  However, as the painting progresses, I need to turn that layer on and off continuously to be able to see my painting without the lines overlayed.  I know I lose a lot of time having to go over and turn the eye off and then back on over on the layers pallete.  I've tried setting something up as an Action, and had a shortlived success, but when I added new layers or moved them around after setting it up, it stops working.  I have to say, it was my first attempt at creating an Action of any kind, so there may be a way to keep it working regardless of what I do to the other layers, I just couldn't seem to figure it out.   Having the ability to somehow dedicate a key for quick toggling of my drawing layer would be another tremendous time saver.  I've looked around and have not been able to find anything on this subject, so I apologize if it's already been covered.
Any help or ideas would be greatly appreciated!
Thanks!

Thank you so much for your quick reply.  I haven't heard of Scripts before, so I will definitely look into that.  I've only really been using Photoshop for a little over a year and  I can see there is much to learn.
Thanks again for your help!

  • Keyboard-shortcut to toggle between the shutdown options?

Is there a keyboard-shortcut to toggle between the shutdown options? On SnowLeopard control-option-command-eject does the trick to shutdown (Mac@work), but on Moutain Lion it switches me to the loginscreen.
I found that the shortcut in ML is control-eject (with a popup), but haven't found how to switch between the button's on the popup.
The popup suggests restart - go to sleep - cancel - shutdown.
    Spacebar does nothing.

  • Help...is there a keyboard shortcut to toggle preview options?

    Hi,
Briefly, I want to quickly toggle with a keyboard shortcut to see the changes.
For example, in a Levels Adjustment Layer, there are these options: Darker, Increase Contrast, Lighter, Midtones Darker, etc...
I want to preview these changes quickly.
It takes a while to click, drag down to each option to see the changes.
I hope the question is clear. Tried to do search on forum for previous answer to same question.
    Thanks,

  • Keyboard shortcuts to toggle "markup" in Preview

    I know about [control] + [command] + H, [control] + [command] + U, and [control] + [command] + S. And these work.
But I find myself needing to click the markup button (toggling it on and off) multiple times per page while reading. I wish there was a keyboard shortcut for this. I tried making one in system preferences for just Preview: [control] + [command] + M. It doesn't seem to work.
Any suggestions on how to create this shortcut?

You can use a shortcut application like Keyboard Maestro, SimpleKeys, Shortcuts or Macro Recorder.  I use KM extensively for adding "canned" replies to posts, opening apps, etc.  It can handle the kind of task you're looking for.  However, it may be overkill for just that one task so look into the others.  Go to MacUpdate.com and search for "keyboard shortcuts" and "keyboard macros" to get other candidates.
Currently QuickKeys is not compatible with Mavericks.  I had used it previously but like KM so much better.

  • Keyboard shortcuts to switch to SPECIFIC input sources

I currently have 4 input sources on my mac (English, Hebrew, Russian, Spanish).
I use the keyboard shortcuts Command+Space and Command+Shift+Space, and I also have it set to automatically switch input sources as I switch to a document, but for some reason, it's just not working out very well for me. I feel like I'm always typing in the wrong language - particularly if I have tabs open in Safari with different languages, or something like Facebook chat which is in the same window, but may require all 4 languages.
I'm wondering if there is any way to set language-specific shortcuts, for example Control+Command+E -> English, or Control+Command+H -> Hebrew.
I looked in the menus of BetterTouchTool but could find nothing...
Do I need to make some kind of script or app to do this?

  • How can I create a new keyboard shortcut to toggle load images automatically preferrably with one action?

I switch the load images automatically selection back and forth in order to save on my 5GB monthly data plan. Is there a utility that would allow me to create a macro of multiple keystrokes to do this with one action? Something like the macro function in Excel? Or is there another way to do this more easily than going to tools, options and clicking on the box? I don't see a shortcut for this item in the standard keyboard shortcuts list

    Hi,
You could try [https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/image-block/?src=search Image Block]. Please also go through the reviews, help and ratings. You can also try to search for similar add-ons via Firefox '''Tools''' ('''Alt''' + '''T''') > '''Add-ons''', Search box on the top right corner, or via the official [https://addons.mozilla.org/ AMO].

  • Keyboard shortcut for toggling between belgian and russian keyboards ?

The standard shortcut is Apple/Command + space.  If that doesn't work you may need to disable it being used already by Spotlight.  You can set any shortcut you want in system prefs/keyboard/keyboard/shortcuts

  • Keyboard shortcut to pick a specific keyboard from the input menu

Is it possible to switch to a particular international keyboard layout with a keyboard shortcut? I have a need for a number of layouts, so the built-in ability to cycle through them all is not convenient. I would like to be able to press a key combination and know that I've been taken to, say, Cyrillic, and use another set of keys for, say, Greek, etc.
In the Keyboard and Mouse preference pane, I am actually able to specify keys for the various keyboards that I use by specifying the program "SystemUIServer" from /System/CoreServices. When I do this, the keyboard shortcuts I have picked appear in the Input Menu as if everything were going nicely. The menu lists various hotkeys as it should -- but they do nothing at all when the keys are actually pressed.
I would be happy with anything that allows me to do what I want to do -- an automator script, say -- but so far I've had no luck. For the record, I have iKey on my system, but I cannot figure out how to control keyboard layouts there either.
      Mac OS X (10.4.7)

..." In the Keyboard and Mouse preference pane, I am actually able to specify keys for the various keyboards that I use"...
You're almost there - keyboard shortcuts assigned to menu items displayed on the right side of the screen won't trigger unless they are given keyboard focus. One way to do this is to use the keyboard shortcut for "Move focus to status menus in the menu bar" shortcut (see the "Keyboard & Mouse" pref pane). That key combo will switch focus to the first item on the left, and focus to other items can be gained by using the arrow keys. Once focus is on the "Input" menu, the assigned custom shortcut should work.
To streamline the process, the "Move focus to status menu..." shortcut can be assigned to something more convenient, and the "Input" menu can be Cmd (⌘)-dragged to the left-most position. That way, it should be possible to switch to the desired input method using a relatively simple two-step keyboard combination.

  • Keyboard shortcuts don't stay put after power off

As I use Pro Tools I can't use F11/F12 for dashboard/desktop, so I've used the preferences to set them to F13 and ^F13. This works fine including when I 'sleep' the Mac. However, if I shut the Mac down then the next time it's turned on those shortcuts don't work - they show up in preferences but are not checked, I have to re-check them to enable them. How can I make them stay put?

friend of mine has similiar issues....but her keyboard shortcuts don't even stay. they are reset to the defaults on a restart. she has to enter them again, not just re-enable them.

  • Is there a location aware wifi option (or app) that enables wifi at a specific location (home) and automatically disables it when you are away from the specified location?

I manually turn off my wifi when leaving home for several reasons:
    1. I don't want my wifi to be on and constantly scanning wifi networks while I am away from home due to privacy reasons.  Many retail stores and airports are now tracking users based on their smartphone's wifi pings.  They can then store your phone's MAC address (the unique identifier of your phone) to determine how often you visit the store and where you go within the store.  It's just a matter of time before they match up your phone's MAC address with your credit card/payment info and then to your identity.  The only way to subvert this is to turn off your phone's wifi.
    2. For security reasons: Wifi access points can track devices that broadcast their wifi signal, even if they don't ever actually connect to the access point's network.  These access points can then store your device's details including your phone's MAC address.  Once your phone's MAC address is discovered, it can be targeted by a hacker.  In addition, there are multiple well known hacker tools that can be used to scan for smartphone wifi signals in order to detect and then hack your iphone.  Bottom line: if your wifi is discoverable, then your device is hackable.
    3. I believe it would save battery life if the iphone's wifi is not on and constantly scanning for networks all the time.
There are other reasons as well, but the above are my 3 main reasons for asking about this.
The reminders app is location aware - you can set reminders to alert you when you are at a specific location.  So, why not provide the option (or an app) to only enable wifi when you are at home - or any other location where you have an authorized or trusted wifi?
As it is right now, the iphone's wifi is broadcasting 24/7 everywhere you go.  Not great for privacy & security.  When I turn off my wifi, the phone uses my 4G plan for data and GPS for location services... so wifi is not needed at all for data or location services while I am away from home (and no, wifi does not improve location accuracy, that is a fallacy... there is nothing within the wifi protocol that could ever improve location accuracy).  But the point is, wifi should have a location aware option.  Otherwise, it's just a matter of time before there is a headline story about how not having this feature is a huge security/privacy problem.

Understood.  However, the point that I'm trying to make is that it's not the WiFi access point's security that's in question, it's having your phone's WiFi in an always-on mode that's in question.  It's simple: if your phone's WiFi is on, then it is both discoverable and hackable... even when it's not connected to a WiFi network or access point.  Here's an article about a drone in London that was created to hack smartphone WiFi signals (and hackers have been doing what this drone does for years):
    http://money.cnn.com/2014/03/20/technology/security/drone-phone/
The point is that it's not  secure to have your phone's WiFi in an always-on mode.  It would be better for privacy and security if Apple made WiFi location aware so that it is only enabled when you are at a trusted location (e.g. your home or office).  Or, at least give us the option of location aware WiFi so that each user can determine the best mode for their phone:
    (1) Always-On (current default - not secure and many privacy issues).
    (2) Trusted mode (only on at trusted locations).
    (3) Off.

  • Keyboard shortcut for change bars

I have the pleasure (?!) of updating the technical content of a whole series of documents written originally by a bunch of people, and sending the results to yet another bunch of people for review. To help the reviewers identify where I've made changes, I use change bars. Great so far...
However, while updating the original work I'm finding that I have to repair spelling, grammar and formatting errors too. The resulting change bars would be a real mess if I didn't turn them off for each of the minor repair jobs, so that they identified only the changes to technical content.
According to the FM Help and other information sources, the ESC c h or the Ctrl+Shift+H keyboard shortcut sequences toggle change bars on and off, but in reality this doesn't happen. Does anyone know of a quick way to toggle change bars?

    > According to the FM Help and other information sources,
    > the ESC c h or the Ctrl+Shift+H keyboard shortcut sequences
    > toggle change bars on and off, but in reality this doesn't happen.
They work for me. Perhaps they don't work the way you expect.
If you want to turn off change bars, so that they're no longer
applied when you make a change, you use "Esc o b" and turn
the function off in the dialog that opens. Turn them on again
    in the same way.
If you already have a change bar applied, and you want to
delete it, then you can use Ctrl+Shift+H. The problem is that
the shortcut toggles the change bars, and change bars is a
character property. The easiest way to do it is:
    1. Select a range of characters bigger than where the
change actually occurs. If possible, it's often easiest
    to select the entire paragraph.
    2. Press Ctrl+Shift+H *twice*. The first time, change
bars are applied to all characters. The second time, the
    change bars are removed.
Or, use the Find function to search for change bars,
and then press Ctrl+Shift+H *once*. Since the search
selects the exact characters where change bars are
applied, you only need one press to remove them.

  • Hello . Mozilla keyboard shortcuts does not include any window key shortcuts. Please update this content . Thanks

    From Mozilla keyboard shortcuts webpage.

In this article: [[Keyboard shortcuts - Perform common Firefox tasks quickly]]?
If the problem is that you are not seeing shortcuts for Mac or Linux, and you are running Windows, then the site did not properly detect your OS. In the left part of the page, look for the EDITING TOOLS bar. If necessary, click it to expand the list of tools. Then you should see a section called CUSTOMIZE THIS ARTICLE where you can change from Mac or Linux to your version of Windows.
If the problem is that there are specific shortcuts missing that you would like to see documented, could you mention which ones they are or which functions they perform?

  • Toggling Between Open Emails -- Keyboard Shortcut

Sometimes I have several emails open at once. The only way I know how to switch between them is to go to the dropdown Window menu. This is a little cumbersome. Is there a keyboard shortcut for toggling between open email windows?
And while I'm at it, is there one for toggling between open Safari windows? I love the Command-TAB way of switching between applications and am looking for something similar.
    Thanks.
    Paul S.

The question is marked as answered, but I don't think it was the answer you wanted. I often have several emails open and want to toggle through them without leaving the keyboard. The Exposé method works, but is not a keyboard shortcut.
Here is how I got it to work:
In System Prefs under Keyboard and Mouse under Keyboard Shortcuts make sure Keyboard Navigation is checked and under that check "Move focus to next window in active application" and then "Command+ tilde" will work!
