Keyboard types in weird characters, x in battery, dim green charger light, fans at full speed, wont smc reset due to weird keyboard symbols

When I start my macbook pro 2012 intel 15inch, the fans run at full speed, the charger light is a dim green, my keyboard writes in weird symbols and the battery has an X in it. All the ports work and so does the trac pad so when i usb a keyboard it works but still types in the symbols. The language is set to English but my computer also shuts off after about 5min of being logged in. I do not think it is a board issue because my ports work and so does the keyboard and trac pad. It has to be software but I cannot reset it. What should I do?

  • Weird Mouse moving + Fan at FULL Speed + NO Power LED (Suddenly)

After having a minor issue on Can't Wake Up from Sleep using Apple Remote Desktop 2.2 (previous post) .... Tonite I got another surprise !!
Tonite, when I turned on my Mini (Intel), I noticed there are some weird movement on the Mouse pointer which happened before; however, since I used ARD as main control ... I will never notice such weird Mouse pointer behavior unless I plug-in and use an USB Mouse!
How weird? Say, I move the USB mouse from Left to Right ... the pointer move and all a sudden ... it disappeared then resurfaced back at the Starting Point which is the place where I started moving it !?! Sometimes, the USB mouse simply not functioning when I move it, the on-screen cursor "blinks" rapidly !!
( BTW ... keyboard seems not functionally too at that moment ... reboot ... things resume normal ... )
Already tried swap Keyboard, Mouse and different USB port too; no use!
    Reset PRAM = NO use.
Reset PRAM then followed by PMU, now the Cooling Fan itself spins at FULL/Top Speed and I also noticed the Power LED Lite is now gone??!!
USB Mouse problem .... still persist and happened randomly but only limited to physical connected mouse only. Using ARD? No problem ... even the pointer already freeze and blinking but it still under control !
Good thing is, I am still able to use my Mini (Intel) .... its still working!!
    Any clue?
Geez .. did I finally get a "Lemon?"
Or should I bring it to service centre for this 7.5 days old Mac Mini (Intel) !
( p.s. don't worry there are neither Refund or Exchange in my country ... :< ... only way is to go dealing with Apple Service Centre.)

    just to continue...
i plug in the power cord and the fans go full before i touch the ON button. no front light, no boot chime, no hard drive noise (though the fans may drown it out), no video after many minutes, pressing the power button does nothing. About the only thing this mac does is plug in and fans on full. Unplug, fans off.
i held power in for ten seconds, i held power button for 5 seconds with power unplugged, i held power button in when plugging in power. Nothing.
    I even reseated the ram.

  • After reading and resetting everything with Keyboard I still get blank white screen. The only way I can boot to Mavericks is unplug power cord, push and hold power button while plugging power cord in. Fans at full speed.

After reading and resetting everything with Keyboard I still get blank white screen on 2nd? page of boot. The only way I can boot to Mavericks is unplug power cord, push and hold power button while plugging power cord in. Fans run at full speed, machine boots then runs normal except the dvdrw will not . The mid 2011 IMAC had the same problem with LION. I changed hard drives, formatted, and installed a clean install of latest os x mavericks. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Use the uninstaller provided with the Sophos software. You can uninstall CUDA via the preference pane. Be sure you remove the com.nvidia.CUDA extension which is located in the /System/Library/Extensions/ folder. Not sure if Fan Control has an uninstaller so you will have to do it manually:
    Uninstalling Software: The Basics
Most OS X applications are completely self-contained "packages" that can be uninstalled by simply dragging the application to the Trash.  Applications may create preference files that are stored in the /Home/Library/Preferences/ folder.  Although they do nothing once you delete the associated application, they do take up some disk space.  If you want you can look for them in the above location and delete them, too.
Some applications may install an uninstaller program that can be used to remove the application.  In some cases the uninstaller may be part of the application's installer, and is invoked by clicking on a Customize button that will appear during the install process.
Some applications may install components in the /Home/Library/Applications Support/ folder.  You can also check there to see if the application has created a folder.  You can also delete the folder that's in the Applications Support folder.  Again, they don't do anything but take up disk space once the application is trashed.
Some applications may install a startupitem or a Log In item.  Startupitems are usually installed in the /Library/StartupItems/ folder and less often in the /Home/Library/StartupItems/ folder.  Log In Items are set in the Accounts preferences.  Open System Preferences, click on the Accounts icon, then click on the LogIn Items tab.  Locate the item in the list for the application you want to remove and click on the "-" button to delete it from the list.
Some software use startup daemons or agents that are a new feature of the OS.  Look for them in /Library/LaunchAgents/ and /Library/LaunchDaemons/ or in /Home/Library/LaunchAgents/.
If an application installs any other files the best way to track them down is to do a Finder search using the application name or the developer name as the search term.  Unfortunately Spotlight will not look in certain folders by default.  You can modify Spotlight's behavior or use a third-party search utility, EasyFind, instead.
Some applications install a receipt in the /Library/Receipts/ folder.  Usually with the same name as the program or the developer.  The item generally has a ".pkg" extension.  Be sure you also delete this item as some programs use it to determine if it's already installed.
There are many utilities that can uninstall applications.  Here is a selection:
        1. AppZapper
        2. AppDelete
        3. Automaton
        4. Hazel
        5. AppCleaner
        6. CleanApp
        7. iTrash
        8. Amnesia
        9. Uninstaller
      10. Spring Cleaning
For more information visit The XLab FAQs and read the FAQ on removing software.
Be sure to remove your two Login Items. Finally do this:
Reinstall Lion, Mountain Lion, or Mavericks without erasing drive
    Boot to the Recovery HD:
Restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the COMMAND and R keys until the menu screen appears. Alternatively, restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the OPTION key until the boot manager screen appears. Select the Recovery HD and click on the downward pointing arrow button.
    Repair
When the recovery menu appears select Disk Utility. After DU loads select your hard drive entry (mfgr.'s ID and drive size) from the the left side list.  In the DU status area you will see an entry for the S.M.A.R.T. status of the hard drive.  If it does not say "Verified" then the hard drive is failing or failed. (SMART status is not reported on external Firewire or USB drives.) If the drive is "Verified" then select your OS X volume from the list on the left (sub-entry below the drive entry,) click on the First Aid tab, then click on the Repair Disk button. If DU reports any errors that have been fixed, then re-run Repair Disk until no errors are reported. If no errors are reported then click on the Repair Permissions button. When the process is completed, then quit DU and return to the main menu.
Reinstall Lion, Mountain Lion, or Mavericks
OS X Mavericks- Reinstall OS X
OS X Mountain Lion- Reinstall OS X
OS X Lion- Reinstall Mac OS X
Note: You will need an active Internet connection. I suggest using Ethernet
if possible because it is three times faster than wireless.

  • My Macbook Pro runs VERY slow when unplugged. The battery charges and runs ok. Ran an SMC reset (no success), Safe mode (did not work), and hardware check (came back ok). What can I try next to fix this?

    Hello all,
I am new to posting on this forum but I really hope that someone out there can help me out. I have a 13" MacBook Pro, 2.53 GHz Core 2 Duo, 4GB 1067 MHz DDR3, running OSX 10.6.8. My problem is that when I unplug the laptop form the charger and run it on the battery, the computer becomes unresponsive to any commands at all. It basically really slows down to a crawl. Even when rebooting it will take 5-10 minutes or more to do so. The odd thing is, when it gets plugged back in while any of this is going on, within a minute or two it works perfectly. It has been in a mac authorized repair shop for 7 weeks and has had a new logic board and a new hard drive replaced. The battery was tested and charges fine, holds a charge when unplugged, and the system profile shows the battery at Normal. Recently, many knowledgeable mac enthusiasts gave me tip that might help. Here is what I did: Ran an SMC reboot (no success), rebooted the computer under safe mode then unplugged it to test (no success), and ran a hardware test on the install disk (showed hardware ok)
I am at a loss as to what to do next. It has become impossible to use this laptop for my classes when it is unplugged. I am about ready to just go buy a new one, and call this one a goner.
I am hoping someone reading this can help with any other ideas on its problem. Help? Anyone?
    Steve

    LPBassman,
since the tech in your IT department was able to copy your daughter’s data from her MacBook Pro’s internal disk, I’d suggest completely erasing the internal disk (using Disk Utility in Recovery mode, reformatting it with a “Mac OS Extended (Journaled)” filesystem), reïnstalling its original version of Mac OS X (either Snow Leopard from the grey Mac OS X Install DVD if it originally came with two grey DVDs, or Lion via OS X Internet Recovery if no grey DVDs originally came with it), running Software Update to get it to 10.6.8 or 10.7.5 respectively, reïnstalling Mavericks, running Software Update again to get it up to date, and finally restoring your daughter’s data.

  • Where can I find a new battery with no charge cycles and a full charge capacity of 1430 mAh for an iphone 4S?

There are horrible reviews on so many battery replacement sites (Amazon comes to mind) where people are buying so-called new replacement batteries and finding that they're had several hundred recharge cycles and won't hold a full design charge.  Can't I get a replacement battery from Apple, or has Apple chosen to abandon it's iPhone 4S customers?  If there's anything on the Apple web site where you can buy a replacement battery for the product, it's not obvious.

  • Replaced battery; won't charge beyond 27%. Some settings lost on restart

I recently took advantage of Apple's replacement program for overheating PB batteries, although I hadn't experienced any actual problems. After I installed the replacement my battery won't charge past 27%, plus the date and time reset to 1969 and my AirPort network settings are lost whenever I restart or shut down.
The power indicator in the menu bar constantly shows ""Calculating."
I've already tried resetting the PMU and allowing the battery to discharge fully.
    Any ideas?

And now for the good news…
The Genius Bar at the KC AppleStore was the source of the solution. They diagnosed a bad battery (the one I'd received in the PB battery replacement program) and changed it out. All's well now, including the "disappearing" settings.

  • Satellite C50-A-1G7 - battery has stopped charging

My C50 has a battery issue. A few weeks old, it stopped charging. First it started charging (as seen on the windows power icon) slowly until 61% then zipped to 100%. But since then, the computer won't work on battery. The charging light does not come on(, but did so before). For all intends and purposes, it looks as there is no battery present, except that the software (windows and toshiba help stuff) insists there is a fully charged battery present.
Now, it probably is a faulty battery or connector, but to avoid going to the shop needlessly, I would like to verify if there is a bios update available. Since it is a relatively new, maybe not but the toshiba site is not the most clear. Anyway I couldn't find any bios update on the pages for Satellite C50-A-1G7.
Currently my bios is 1.20 with EC version 1.00
    tnx

To be honest I don't think BIOS update can be solution for this. Anyway, you can check which BIOS version is offered on BIOS download page - http://www.toshiba.eu/innovation/download_bios.jsp
Im afraid you must contact nearest Toshiba service. They have special tools and can check hardware functionality.

  • Can my iMac be set to type with French characters?

Hello all! Can my iMac be set to type with French characters? If so, what is the path? And, is there a keyboard overlay to see where the French language characters are located on the keyboard? Thanks!

    Hey Steve,
Thanks again for the thoughts... Unfortunately, the only characters that I can use keyboard shortcuts for French are the é, ç and the á (it's better than nothing).
Outside of that, I have to switch keyboard layouts. I know of the accent grave ( `e ) that's nextdoor to the number one key... But it don't work... my translator thinks it's a typo... because it takes up a whole characters worth of space instead of sharing the space with the actual letter (vowel), like the other accents.
So I need keyboard shortcuts for:
    ê Ê Ë ë è È
    Ô ô Ö ö
    à À Û û
I use these letters just enough to make switching keyboards back and forth a little irksome. Since the two keyboards have pretty distinctively different layouts and then we have the position of the A and M keys and.. well... see where this could lead??? LOL
    Thanks...
I appreciate your thoughts, as always...
    Yvonne

  • How can i type international alphabet characters into keywords, title, and captions in Lightroom 4?

How can i type international alphabet characters into keywords, titles, and Captions in Lightroom 4?  Usual Microsoft key shortcuts not working.

I haven't found a way to do that directly, but there is a workaround. It' s a bit cumbersome, so it's only good for the occasional character.
In MS Word or any other text editor create a file that contains all the international characters you need.
When you need to insert one of these characters into Lr (captions, title, keywords) copy the character from your text document and paste it into Lr where needed.
    On Windows Ctrl + C / V works fine.

  • Battery will not charge. and other issues

Well i'm working on a friend of mines notebook, its a n100 model 0768 12u running windows xp. This is the situation so far. First his hard drive had fried so i replaced that and put the o.s. back on it,but now the battery will not charge. also the wireless network card and dvd drive did not work. I had originally thought that they might have fried as well when the hard drive went down. However I looked through the forums here and found that alot of people solved the battery issue simply by replacing the battery i recommended that. He purchased a replacement battery ( not a genuine lenovo battery, don't know if that makes a difference) and when i put it in the dvd drive and the network card started working no problem. But alas the battery still would not charge. the system runs fine without a battery in it, but if i put the battery in it while its running it turns itself off after about 30 seconds of having the battery in. when the system is powered off and i put the battery in the battery lcd in front blinks 5 times orange then nothing for about 30 seconds then 5 more times. maybe thats a trouble code, don't know, looked all oover the forums and couldn't find anything quite like it. any help would be greatly appreciated.
     thanks
    Steve

    Duck3,
Glad that worked for you!  Thanks for sharing here.
I saw a weird situation on friend's ThinkPad recently - a replacement battery arrived with a 37% charge (not 100% deliberately as somewhere around 40% is the best for shelf life), but it would not accept a charge.   We did a reset by removing the battery & AC and pressing and holding the power button a number of times  (some people say 10 times, some two or three times for a count of 5 or 10).   This drains residual capacitance.
We plugged back in the battery and AC and it began to charge.
Might be worth a try here before he opens it up ....
