Keychain security

I have before booted from the leopard install disk and changed the master password to reset the log-in account password. If somebody stole my imac they would easily be able to do the same thing, then allowing them to open the keychain program. If you click on one of your private notes you have to enter a password to show it. Can this password be changed by the leopard install disk also or will it remain safe ?

Changing the account password does not change the keychain password. If the keychain password is the same as the login password, it can be automatically unlocked, otherwise it remains locked and will ask for authentication each time something wants access. Someone will need to know the keychain password in order to change the keychain password. You can use the KeyChain Access utility to set the keychain login preferences.

  • Keychain Security Password vs. Keychain Login Password

    Hi,
Does anyone happen to know anything about the keychain SECURITY password? I know what my keychain LOGIN password is and have been able to change it. I don't remember setting up a keychain security password and I haven't been able to find information on how to change it or access it or even find out more about it.
    Thanks,
    Securitied Out

However under security, when I go in I can unlock it with my login password which is the same as my keychain login password.
I'm a bit confused. I see no security menu item within Keychain Access. Exactly what are you referencing? Additionally, under the Security prefPane in System Preferences, there are only two items requiring a password under the General tab.
But to access the network access information I have in it it won't allow me in when I use my login password.
Where are you trying to access this information? There's nothing in Keychain Access, that I can see, that deals with network access.
In the listing after date modified under the keychain heading what I see is System not login like Login file above. So I'm trying to find out what that is all about and just have no clue and am a bit frustrated.
Once, again, I have no idea exactly what you're trying to do or where you're doing it. You need to be more explicit and provide the steps and utilities/applications you're using.

    hello

    pls advice!
    tks

I too have this problem but my number is my iphone 6 and is a 'real' number. i checked it is input in a valid way and i still don't get a flippin sms from Apple! idiots!
what happens if i turn off keychain and then turn it on again? does it remove all my previous information (passwords) or only the new ones I have added to my mac specifically since not being able to activate keychain (it's not been activated for a few months now) or does it retain everything and then resyncs it all when i turn keychain on again? i REALLY don't wanna lose any of my information if i can help it!!!!

  • Search a Keychain Secure Note?

I keep a lot of personal info stored in a secure note within a keychain.  I'd like to be able to search that info to find items quickly but haven't discovered a way to do it.  Am I missing something?

I must not have explained myself correctly.  I want to be able to open the secure note and then search the text (like you can in word processing programs, browsers, etc.)  Say I have a note with 100 lines of text.  I'd like to open the note and then perform a search for specific text, e.g., "swiss bank", or "CIA Passwords", etc.

  • Keep my Keychain secure... How can I customise it?

How can I set my iCould Keychain to automatically (or manually) lock after a few minutes of inactivity, without also locking the default login Keychain?
I do know this. But it doesn't work as I expect or want.
Basically I want only my passwords for web forms and internet passwords to be stored in iCloud Keychain so I can use auto fill and sync between iOS and OS X. Because I don’t know any of my passwords, they’re generated using Keychain. But I don’t want my Wi-Fi and email passwords etc to be locked as well. Only Safari.
But if I lock my iCloud Keychain without locking the default login Keychain, I still get prompted with email password etc.
I’ve tried moving anything that isn’t passwords for web forms and internet passwords into the default login Keychain. Doesn’t work either. Which I don’t understand, because as I read it and understand it. That is exactly what Apple writes in the Keychain Access Help menu under Secure for Keychain. I’ve tried creating a new Keychain that can lock automatically, but they don’t sync with iOS. So that's a no go. And have a Keychain with a Keychain.
I think I would love to separate my Safari logins from my admin password. Because I can’t like how Safari/Keychain displays all my URLs and usernames by hitting cmd+komma. But on the same time, I don’t wanna lock every other password for wifi, Twitter notications and email and what not.
I’m finding the Keychain VERY hard manage.
English isn’t my mother tongue, so perhaps I read something that isn’t there? Can someone explain to me, what i don’t understand?
    I'm running OS X 10.9.2 and iOS 7.1

Try running Keychain Access/First Aid and resetting the original keychain.

  • Keychains - security of non-login keychain

I have two keychains on my Mac.
    -Secure items
    They have different passwords.
I use "Secure items" to store stuff that I only ever want to open manually, like FTP logins for client machines, bank info, etc.
"Login" I use in the normal Mac way. Once you're past the Login window it stays open but required password confirmation for admin stuff.
My question: Given the sensitive nature of some of the data in the "Secure items" keychain, is there any way someone who steals my laptop could reset the password of this keychain or is it completely locked and inaccessible even if they were to reset the machine password?
I assume the keychain will be locked and inaccessible, but it would be good to hear it from someone with experience in this.
    Thanks,
    Pat

Not if you've locked the Secure Items keychain and they don't have the tools NSA uses to break coded stuff. See http://images.apple.com/support/security/guides/docs/SnowLeopardSecurity_Configv10.6.pdf for more details.

  • ICloud Keychain reset without security code

I set yo iCloud Keychain without problems but did not set up a security code. Later,I disabled iCloud Keychain but now want to enable it again. My contact phone is a landline without SMS capability. How can I recover and start over from scratch?

After continued research, I finally found what I think is the best article in Apple Support on this issue. It explains how to reset the iCloud Keychain. The two lessons that I learned from this were:
    1. Always use your iPhone as the reference phone number so you can get the proper support from Apple (I had listed a landline)
    2. Always be sure to establish your iCloud Keychain security code when you set up iCloud Keychain.

  • How secure is Keychain?

How secure is Keychain? It has all of my Airport passwords stored. The Keychain PW is the same as the machine PW, so the Keychain security is only as good as the machine PW. What level of encryption is offered by Apple?

Keychain uses Triple Digital Encryption Standard (3DES): http://images.apple.com/macosx/security/docs/MacOSXSecurityTB.pdf
It is reasonably secure. If someone knows your machine password, then they can also unlock your keychain. However, if someone gains access to your machine and just resets the password so they can login, or just copies the data, your keychain is still secure.

  • ICloud Keychain Reset

I get a message that iCloud Keychain was reset every few minutes. I have to go into System Preferences and enter my iCloud Security Code. Keychain works for a few minutes. It accepts my code and shows the check mark next to Keychain. Then I get the same message a few minutes later.
No changes have been made on any of my other devices, so not sure why it's getting reset. I just checked and it is happening on multiple Macs. Keychain on iOS devices has no problem staying on.

  • !0.10.3 Keychain woes.

!0.10.3 made me reset my keychain. All website passwords reset. iPhone web passwords still ok. How can I transfer my iPhone (iOS 8.3) keychain info to my mac?

One option is to sync the keychain using iCloud. It must be set up on the Mac and the iPhone.

  • System Keychain Vulnerability

I have my login keychain secured by a separate password. However, the System Keychain contains the password to my network and time capsule and is not secured by a separate password. I only need to open Keychain Access, unlock the System Keychain, and enter my login password and I have access to the items.
I thought the idea behind the System Keychain was to store passwords needed for the system independent of the user and that these passwords would be secured by a system password known only to the OS. The fact that I can use my login password to access these keychain items makes the second password for my login keychain irrelevant for my network and time capsule.
    Am I missing something..?

Someone takes my Mac and is able to guess or otherwise break my login password. I am still protected for my login keychain by a second, stronger password.
As I said before, even if your login keychain uses exactly the same password as your login password, resetting the login password will not help an attacker break into that keychain. The attacker would have to guess your login password to get access to that keychain. Of course, if you've chosen such a poor password that someone could guess it, you can hardly call that a system vulnerability!
however, being mac-savvy, the thief opens keychain access and selects my *System* keychain and unlocks it. It asks for a password and the thief enters my login password.
Again, this relies on the thief knowing your login password. However, I'm not sure what the effects of resetting the login password would be on the System keychain. I would think that the same thing would apply and you'd lose access to those passwords. But since this keychain has a different purpose than the others, maybe not. The only way to know for sure would be to test it.
the System Keychain only contains passwords which are needed across all users, but these include the network and time capsule passwords which are pretty critical...
That's assuming that resetting the password gives access, which may not be the case. Even if that is the case, those passwords are not really critical... choose a unique password for these things that you don't use for anything else. Your scenario of having someone steal your laptop yet stay on-site and mess with your Time Capsule is a bit silly. The thief already has your machine, so there's nothing on the Time Capsule that they won't already have.
