Keyword edit

Hello...
I started to use my Aperture 3 a bit in a hurry, did not have time to read the manual extensively.
I entered several keywords and attributed them to photos in different projects.
After, I realised that my keyword definitions were either inappropiate or redundant.
I am wondering if I can straighten up this by editing my keywords, which I guess you can do by exporting the keywords, edit them with a word prodesssor in text mode, and reloading them.
My question is: if a keyword is modified (eg. typo corrected) or moved into a new subcategory, will this change the keywords that are already attached to existing photos ?
Thanks and cheers

No!  You use Aperture's Keywords HUD to edit your keywords.  When you rename one, Aperture will ask you if you want to apply this change to all the Images to which you have applied that keyword.  You can also group your keywords under other keywords.  If you do so, I recommend _not_ using any of your keyword-group keywords as keywords.  (See this thread.)  You can merge keywords that are identical.
The user manual is uncharacteristically thin on keyword use in Aperture.  Read the keywording section and ask more questions.

A keyword edit view would be nice. Just some UI widget that would one more easily create, delete and edit keywords. The current UI is pretty tweaking when trying to create parent-child relationships (try adding Apple under Zebra when you have hundreds of keywords). Also, allowing one to select multiple keywords for batch ops, like creating synonyms, would be nice.
An export (and import) to/from XML or some other normalized form would be sweet, too.

  • Keyword Editing Bugs - Help

I have two separate (but likely related) problems with Keywords editing in iPhoto '11:
    (1) When viewing a Smart Album, attempting to edit the Keywords of a single photo is frequently changing the Keywords of every photo in the Smart Album. (This is obviously yielding disastrous results. Now thousands of my photos are tagged incorrectly.) I click a single photo -- or Command-Click three or four photos -- and, after confirming that only the photos I want to update are selected (the top right message reports "3 photos selected", for example), I modify the Keywords. Then when I click "Return", every photo in the album is updated with the new Keyword(s).
    (2) When attempting to edit Keywords anywhere -- albums, smart albums, etc. -- I am unable to delete a keyword unless I do it multiple times. For example, the photo will be tagged with Keywords "Alpha", "Bravo", "Delta", and "Echo". I delete "Bravo" and hit "Return", and then the "Bravo" Keyword comes back. I delete it. It comes back. I delete it again, and it finally disappears.
I have rebuilt my library multiple times at iPhoto startup, but nothing seems to resolve this problem.
My entire iPhoto library is now an epic disaster. I have 23,000+ photos and now thousands of them are tagged incorrectly. Attempting to fix them keeps making everything worse.
    Does anyone have any ideas?

    Mistrustful aren't we?
    1. Using iPhoto Library Manager to rebuild a Library requires no purchase. You can download and use the app for free. Some extra features (like merging libraries) require a purchase. So, even if I had a beneficial interest in iPhoto Library Manager what would it gain me when the most frequent (by a mile...) use I suggest the app for costs nothing.
I don't know that I'm a "vocal advocate" for the application. I recommend it as a way to solve library corruption issues. I'm not the only person on here who does. All the most experienced posters here do. There's a reason for that. It's the best solution on offer.
    2. I have no interest in, financial relationship with, or anything to gain from anyone using iPhoto Library Manager for any reason whatever. Neither do I have anything to gain from your using Apple products - I'm neither an employee nor a shareholder - or indeed, any other hardware or software.
    3. iPhoto Library Manager is not a workaround it's a solution. You cannot repair that database. There is no way to. You may be reticent to accept that. Good. If you can find an way or another app to repair the database I'll happily recommend that instead of iPhoto Library Manager. (And I'll have no financial relationship with that, either)
    4. Your Library is corrupted. You have four options now:
Rebuild with iPhoto's own tools - that hasn't worked for you
Restore from a known-good back up. That's the next best option
Everything from now on means some data loss
Rebuild with iPhoto Library Manager - minimise the data loss
Make a new Library and start over from scratch. Maximum pain and dataloss.
    Your choice.

  • Restoring keywords & edits to Library

I recently lost my Library6.iPhoto file to corruption and in the process I lost some editing and keywording changes I had made. I have recent backups to this file that I am going to use but the recent keywording and editing changes won't be on it. I do also have a backup DVD that I made recently via iPhoto's Share/Burn command which I think will have many of these keywording and editing changes. What is the fastest/safest way to restore these changes to my libary?
    Thanks,
    Win

    Terence,
Not sure you understand my situation. I was able to repair the Library problem itself by deleting the damaged Library6.iPhoto file and installing a recent Library6 backup. The trouble is that said Library6 backup didn't have the most recent editing & keywording changes because it was made several days before.
Happily I also had made a backup of the film roll in question after editing and keywording a number of images in a previous session. As far as I understand Share/Burn's function it would have also saved the editing/keywording changes made just prior to that backup being made.
So now I have a DVD containing edited/keyworded images that also exist on the harddrive without the editing/keywording. My question is how do I get those edits and keywords reattached to the images?
    Thanks,
    Win

  • Keyword editing; script request

I am looking for a way to better edit keywords in Aperture 2.
If I bring up the Keyword HUD (shift-H), I sure can organize the keywords into a tree, but Aperture shows neither the match count nor the images themselves. Selecting images by keyword can apparently only be done out of a flat list from the +Smart Settings+ of the Library search function or the Query HUD in the browser window.
I have been importing many older images from +iView Media 3+ which has excellent keyword management capabilities. In particular, I like the hierarchical location management via IPTC fields. (That would be nice to have in Aperture, without having to "abuse" keywords.) Unfortunately, I haven't been all that consistent in keyword assignment (who is?), so there is a lot of cruft (typos etc.), and cleaning this up is not getting any easier with more incoming pictures.
As a workaround, it would help if there was a pair of AppleScripts to map the keywords library onto appropriate containers and back, where a container is either a project, a yellow, or a blue folder -- I know this is a bit vague because of the very specific purposes and limitations of each one of those. Two scripts would be needed:
    *Keywords to Folders*
    - Create a toplevel container Keywords
    - For each existing (hierarchical) keyword:
-- create a matching hierarchical container under Keywords
-- match images and place (link) them into the new container
-- remove keyword from the keyword library
At this point, one can edit the keywords graphically by manipulating the containers.
    *Folders to Keywords*
    - For each container below Keywords
-- create keyword in library, with same name and hierarchy level
-- apply keyword to images in container (if not already present)
However, this is beyond my limited expertise with AppleScript. For someone more experienced: Is this feasible, or does such a mapping perhaps already exist?
    Regards, Michael

Forgive me but I cannot help myself - I must post a response.
While I sympathize with you in whatever issue you are trying to solve with your organization and I do believe whole heartedly in using whatever tools you have in anyway that suits your needs. I do believe that you may be missing the point of hierarchical keywords. The point is primarily to impose additional pseudo hierarchical structures that are not necessarily identical to your primary hierarchical structure. It's also convenient and efficient to be able to change those virtual structures and add new ones. This is usually best accomplished by only adding the most specific keywords to your images and then arranging those specific keywords under increasingly general parent keywords. You don't really want to be adding every single keyword in the hierarchy to each image nor do you want your primary org structure to mirror one particular keyword path.
Yea yea yea I know all about the export issue with Aperture hierarchies for you stock guys out there (LR2 has a really nice solution for this w/o making a big mess). See here if are interested [Aperture2 and LR2 Keywords|http://photo.rwboyer.com/2008/11/aperture-2-vs-lightroom-2-keywords>
Personally I believe you would find yourself with a bigger more gigantic mess should this script/scripts be unleashed on humanity. Maybe we here at the ole' Aperture forum could be of assistance in helping get to the root of what you are actually trying to accomplish?

  • Lightroom Metadata editing and workflow is tedious nightmare!

I'm new to Lightroom in just the past month, but have used it enough to see that a serious interface problem makes Lightroom version 1x virtually unusable in a deadline-oriented publishing workflow. Lightroom's Metadata editing and workflow is just a terrible nightmare, and far too tedious and slow. It appears to be an afterthought implemented by good-hearted souls who've never had to edit this sort of information under serious deadline pressures. I know Lightroom is marketed as an image database and not a file browser, but we're all looking to simplify our workflow here and with just a few subtle enhancements, Lightroom could be an excellent file browser and file import manager too.
As it is now, the Lightroom v1x handling of File Naming and Renaming, Metadata Editing and Keyword Editing is poorly implemented and in need of an immediate overhaul to help professional photographers expedite this crucial and time-consuming first step in the archiving workflow. While Lightroom is very good at many other tasks, I give it a big fat "F" of a failing grade for these tasks.
First, the Lightroom Library Module needs an even more simple, linear interface that steps users through a precise procedures (and helps them remember them). Arguably, to accomplish this, the Import function may need to become a separate Module that can be selected and used separately before entering the Library. As File Naming and Renaming, Metadata Editing and Keyword Editing currently are implemented, I, for one, am always forgetting to fill out one of these critical sections and can't even seem to remember that some may need to be done before importing while others appear to be conceived to be done after importing. My point is, all these related steps really need to be done together, but the Interface spreads out the functions too much, and it is nearly impossible to build a logical and linear Import workflow, especially when you are first learning Lightroom.
I'd like to see a workflow that walks me through applying and editing (in order), File Naming, Basic and IPTC Metadata, Captioning and Keywords, so that I don't always forget some obscure step in the process (which I keep doing). Here are some specific suggestions, some of which may prove to be valid, some of which may be problems due to my lack of experience with thye software.
    1. As currently implemented, Metadata editing requires too much thought, and does not have enough intelligent automation. Eliminate as much typing as possible (See Photo Mechanic!)
    2. Lightroom needs better Metadata Presets. A "Quick Edit" view to simplify interface for editing minimal metadata info (File Name, Basic Info, Keywords, Headline, Limited Copyright Info).
    3. Separating Keyword Tags, Metadata Browser, Keywording Presets and Metadata Presets confuses the workflow. They should all appear together under one selectable module that organizes a suggested, linear workflowfor these tasks, but allows it to be customized. This is the sort of tasks that need to be learned by rote memory, and having all these panes floating around on both sides of the photo make it impossible to quickly step through these tasks.
    - Name (or Rename) files, Edit/Apply Basic and IPTC Metadata, Edit/Apply Keywords, Import or...
    - Import, Name (or Rename) files, Edit/Apply Basic and IPTC Metadata, Edit/Apply Keywords, Import
    4. Rename should offer the option of renaming the master file names on the disk, not just file names in the database (which I think is what Lightroom does, but again, this is very confusing for new users)! So, it is my belief that this feature needs a checkbox option to rename one, the other or both. But you need to be able to quickly find this dialog box every time you do an import, and it should not be hidden away out of view under the Library menu. Ideally and logically (for workflow), File Renaming should be handled when starting the Import into Lightroom.
This is critically important because many user

Lightroom metadata editing Part 2 (see Part 1 at top of thread)...
...This is critically important because many users just do not want to trust their images solely to any database and we want the ability to go look for master files with identical names should something go wrong with the software or we decide to edit the file in Photoshop outside of Lightroom or even switch to another library software program.
My own habit is to rename every file with the date followed by a unique, three-digit file number, as in 20070717_001, 20070717_002...up to 999 etc. (I have never shot more than 999 files in a single day, but this could be a four-digit number). To file these on disk, a folder with a similar naming scheme is created for each day's shoot, although a keyword slug is added to the end instead of file numbers.
    5. Metadata Presets (Basic Info, IPTC metadata, EXIF metadata), Keywords need to be able to toggled on or off (promote/demote-expand/contract). Turning Off/On one section at a time via the Metadata Presets popup menu is too tedious...and you can't display IPTC and Large Caption together or leave Large Caption turned on. It also is difficult to remember where the Large Caption default (Preferences) setting is...
    6. Please get the EXIF data out of the way entirely when editing captions and visa-versa...And the EXIF data should not separate Basic Info and IPTC Info fields. Please relocate the EXIF to the bottom of the Metadata pane...
    7. IPTC Content, IPTC Copyright, IPTC Creator, IPTC Image expand/collapse sections need more automation:
    - The Presets fields need Preset lists of entry choices for cities, states, countries, etc.!
    - ISO Country Code automatically should be filled in when a country is entered.
    - Date created automatically should be filled in from camera EXIF data
    - Metadata Presets "Save As" should fill in old name, and allow you to rename it; (When it appears, the new name field should not be empty. This would aid in consistent, alphabetical naming
    - Metadata Presets naming should support job names, with actual Presets saved under each job name...
    8. IPTC Status EXIF, Contact, etc.
    - Caption field MUST display more than one line...(6-8 lines)!
    - Caption field MUST support Shift/Return!
    - Headline (IPTC Content) should be displayed with (and above) caption. Please present information logically!
    - Yellow popups should describe what each field name is for...some are real brain teasers...

  • How to export keywords, CS3 to CS4

I have CS3 on my old computer, under Win XP, and CS4 on my new, under Windows 7 RC. I have about 20,000 photos, all with Bridge keywords, applied in CS3.
The photos are on an external HD. (They're also backed up in at least 3 places.) In my old computer the photos taken in the past 5 years have keywords in Bridge. In my new computer the same photos, on the same drive, have no keywords, though earlier ones do.
I have done all the things I'm supposed to do: trashed my Bridge prefs, deleted the entire cache, rebuilt it by reindexing, exported the keywords from the old computer to the new, exported the cache to individual folders as well as a centralized cache. Nothing works. I'm faced with a long, hard job of re-applying keywords to 10,000 or so files.
Is there anything I can do?
Can anyone tell me why half my photographs have retained their keywords and the other half lost them? I thought keywords were embedded in the metadata, and that the metadata survived transportation from one system to another, and over the web, and so forth. It's dismayingto learn that I spent so much time working out a system for keywords, and applying them, only to find that I've got to do it all again.
I don't think it's anything to do with Windows 7 RC, which seems stable and well-behaved.

    >Just to be clear CS4 you see some, but not all keywords, or in CS4 you see no keywords?<
I've made more sense of the problem. It's to do with Olympus Raw files - .orf. I've been shooting in Olympus camera raw since 2004.
My workflow is: import the raw files into Bridge via a card reader; rename them in Bridge as [filename].ORF, apply keywords, edit them in Adobe Camera Raw, save them as [filename].PSD (or sometimes .TIF or .JPG), move the PSDs to a working folder, edit them in Photoshop, and finally move them to a 'Finals' folder.
In Bridge CS3, in my old computer, I can see all keywords for ORF files. I can also see all keywords for the working and final PSDs, TIFs and JPGs.
In Bridge CS4, in my new computer, I cannot see any keywords for ORF files, or for the working and final PSDs, etc.
I can only see keywords for files which started life as TIFs - photos scanned with my negative scanner or flatbed scanner.
This is also true in both Bridge CS3 and Bridge CS4 in my new laptop, which is running XP Pro. I could see the keywords in my old laptop, but not in my new one.
    >If you right click on file info in Bridge do you have the keyword listed in keyword box?  Do the same with Windows Explorer and see if keyword is listed in Properties/details.<
'Keyword' isn't listed in Windows Explorer, though everything else under the sun is.
The keywords are listed if I right click in Bridge CS3 on a file in my old computer. And if I click on Advanced, and expand the categories, e.g. XMP or Dublin Core Props, I get a heading 'xap:Keywords (bag container)', and a list of all the keywords attached to the file.
But the same file in CS3 in the laptop, or CS4 in laptop or new computer, has no keywords in Advanced.
I've had a quick look on the web for topics connected with Olympus camera raw/orf/losing keywords, but so far haven't found anything.

  • Different Keywords per page

Is it possible for a Contribute CS3 user to edit the keywords

  • Keywords and new Iphoto Library

Is there a simple way to delete/remove keywords from the photos in my new library?
For some reason (could be my fault) every photo has the same five keywords, I delete them and then they reappear. I've tried quitting Iphoto, opening the old photo library using Iphoto library manager and re opening and they are still there and I can't seem to shift them.  I have tried manually removing them and they go and then come back again.  Any thoughts how to fix this I would be very grateful to hear.
I was getting on quite well with the iphoto library manager programme which I learnt about here but this iphoto programme is very odd and I haven't warmed to it at all.

Whatever was going on seems to have stopped by virtue of deleting the keywords that had attached themselves to nearly all the photos in the 'Manage my keywords' Edit screen.   I think I had better go and do some reading about iphoto, so far I have been muddling through having updated from a very old version.
The faces thing is most mysterious too. It often says there are two faces and I name one, but then it insists there is a smaller one too. a frame within a frame,  that it wants me to name. I tend to ignore these things and hope they will go away.
If there is an issue with the database Terence - thank you for replying by the way -  what am I supposed to do then?
    kind regards, Joanna

  • Lightroom 2.7 CS5 and Keywords

Having been using PSE6 as external editor with LR (currently 2.7) I have upgraded to CS5. However when, from LR, editing a copy of a photo with CS5 and saving it the associated keywords are "lost". The copy (of the photo) appears ok in the LR catalog, but the keywords are not associated with it though they are still there and listed with the original photo.  This didn't happen with PSE where the keywords were carried over to the edited copy of the photo.
Have I missed something in the CS5 settings?
    Ian

Well, bang goes the theory about editing Capture Time in LR affecting CS5's handling of keywords. I did a controlled test importing a photo in CS5 from a scanner and saved it. Imported into LR (and noticed there was no date/time digitised filled in), added keywords, edited Capture Time to the date the photo was taken, which resulted in date/time digitised and original date being filled in. Did an edit in CS5 as external editor to LR and the keywords remained intact.
    Hmm. Baffled.

  • Keyword - Synonym bug?

Please could someone confirm whether this is a known bug, or something particular to my set-up...
My workflow is: shoot RAW, select images, keyword, Edit in Photoshop (TIFF).
The problem I have is that the keywords I add to the RAW images correctly get embedded in the TIFF file when the file is created as a result of "Edit in Photoshop", except that the synonyms do not.  i.e. After I open the image in PShop I can see all the keywords (including parents where I have requested them to be shown) but no synonyms!!!
I'm using latest release of LR/PShop on Vista 64.
Any help would be appreciated as I am not looking forward to having to hunt for all keywords containing synonyms and creating/applying dedicated keywords for the synonyms (kind of defeats the point of synonyms!).
    Thanks!

Personally, I think your approach is the correct one; once a file is generated it should have all the keywords embedded. However, LR's approach is at least consistent. The RAW file doesn't have the synonyms either until it is exported in some way. When you open the RAW directly into PS without going through LR the synonyms aren't embedded.
I think Adobe has taken the approach that LR manages the keywords until you export the final product for use elsewhere. You wouldn't need to re-import the TIFF since it is already in LR with its synonyms. It's just that they aren't embedded at that point.
I would raise this issue with Adobe by filing it as either a bug report or a feature request at http://www.adobe.com/cfusion/mmform/index.cfm?name=wishform

  • Transfering edited photos from laptop to PC

When I've keyworded, edited, and rated photos on my laptop, can I then transfer these photos to my PC so the original photos, along with all these types of changes, are still visible and actively adjustable (e.g. the ability to clear a crop) in the Lightroom Develop module?

    D-
Run Export as Catalog on laptop, then Import from Catalog on PC. If it's the whole catalog, no need for first ste; just copy over the .lrcat and image files, then Import as Catalog.

  • "Taken on" date in Flickr incorrect

I noticed a weird behavior with some Aperture photos I post to Flickr.  If I follow the steps below, the "taken on" date shown in Flickr is always incorrect (details later).
    - Upload RAW files (this happens with Canon G12 and also Nikon D300) into Aperture.
    - Add tags/keywords
    - Edit photo 'a' in PhotoShop CS5 (my external editor)
    - Save back to Aperture as new TIFF file (by default, PS will give the TIFF file the same name as the original RAW)
    - Drag the edited image to a Flickr album in Aperture library called "Aperture Uploads" (my 'staging area' for Flickr uploads)
When I view the image in Flickr, the "taken on" date appears to be set to the date/time I edited the photo.  Oddly enough, if I look at the Metadata tab in Aperture for that specific photo, it shows the correct date/time when the photo was taken.
If I do adjustments/changes in Aperture and then upload the photo, the "taken on" date is correct.

Very interesting problem and far more complex than I thought.
If I 'upload' to my photostream from Aperture to Flickr, the 'taken on' date is correct. If I drag the same photo into a set, the 'edited date' is interpreted (on Flickr) as the 'taken on' date.
I've experimented doing the same in iPhoto (to photostream and to a set). The problem doesn't occur so maybe Aperture developers could learn something from the iPhoto guys?
Although there is this workaround, it would be good if someone from Apple could get on the case and fix it!

  • How can I Manage Multiple Users?

My wife and I both want to organize and edit our digital photos with PSE10.  Up until now, I have managed all of our photos by myself, and I have synchronized all data on both of our computers (and backed up all of our data to an external harddrive).  Now that my wife also wants to organize and edit our photos on her computer, I am finding it difficult to synchronize the PSE Catalogs and photos on our two computers.  So, I am looking for a better procedure.
Should I (and can I) keep my PSE Catalog & Photos on:
    (1) an External Harddrive (which would be connected to only one computer at a time, while that computer user is organizing and editing photos), or
    (2) on a Home Network location where both users could access the photos for organizing and editing (with a "lockout" for photos which are being edited by the other computer user)?
Are there other good or better procedures for managing multiple users of PSE?
My computer is running Win7 Home Premium 64-bit.
My wife's computer is running Windows Vista Home Premium 32-bit.

Thank all of you for your replies.
    Re SOFTWARE CHOICES:
I decided that my wife and I will each use different software on our different computers.
I decided NOT to upgrade my wife's software from "Windows Live Photo Gallery" (WLPG) to "Adobe Photoshop Elements 10" (PSE).  After a detailed discussion of my wife's wishes, I discovered that she only wants to (1) move our pictures into folders, (2) cull the pix, and (3) create "Album" folders (with only our most memorable pix) to be printed as 8.5" x 11" pages for the Albums.  She wants me to crop, edit, add captions, and print the Album pages.  See the image at the bottom for our current Photo Mgmt Plan.
I will continue to use "Lightroom" (Lr).
    Re SYCHRONIZATION:
I decided that we both can use the same picture files.  I use "GoodSync" to sychronize files between my computer and my wife's computer (and between my computer and my backup HDD).
My wife's "WLPG" does NOT appear to use a database.  My changes (including "Keyword" edits or adds) show up in her "WLPG" program, when picture files have been changed by myself in "Lr" and sychronized with her computer.
After my wife adds folders and/or changes the folder contents, I sync her computer with mine.  I open her folders (which are now also on my computer) in "Lr", and "Import" any of her new and duplicate pictures into "Lr".  Surpisingly and thankfully, the pictures that have been moved to a new folder by my wife do NOT show up in "Lr" in the previous folder (i.e. I do NOT have to find and delete any "Missing" images which were in the previous folder location).
Re MULTIPLE USERS OF A DATABASE:
I do not need to use this now, but I read that "Lr" is designed to work with the "Lr" database (and pictures) on an external HDD.
Thank all of you again for your very helpful replies.

  • RAW files converted to JPGs - why?

Pics shot in RAW format in my Minolta A2 camera appear correctly as MRW files of 11.6mb each when imported into iPhoto. However, when I look for them in the iPhoto Library (in their correct catalogue position under year/month/date) they are displayed as JPG files. This used not to happen, and other iPhoto users say their files are corrctly tagged as RAW. Conversion to JPG of course means loss of quality with compression, negating the whole purpose of shooting in RAW. I should be able to import photos from the iPhoto Library into Photoshop as RAW files for processing there before export and any compression. Something seems to have changed, but I can't figure out what. Any suggestions?

First off, editing a RAW image results in the modified photo being saved in JPG format. The original RAW image is still there however. If you want something lossless, check your iPhoto preferences. There is a setting that causes edited RAW images to be converted to TIFF, or you can have it send RAW files to an external editor. Note that RAW is just an electronic negative format. In order to do anything with it anyway, there is a rasterization phase that converts it to JPEG or TIFF or some other format for editing and printing.
Bring up iPhoto help, and search for keywords "edit RAW". There is an item "Working with photos taken in RAW format" that will give you more information.
