Killing the gui and droping into the kernel

is there a key combo i can hit in the finder or anywhere in the gui for that matter that will kill all services but the kernel and drop me into the kernel?
from where i could run unix commands and even restart the gui if my heart saw fit?

i would want to be able to do it so that if i install a program and it requires a restart
What applications are you installing that require a restart?
Most applications shouldn't need it. If it does need a restart it would only be because it's installing some kind of kernel extension, which still wouldn't be loaded by a restart of the GUI.

I try to compile a kernel myself and boot into it, and I use virtualbox to test it. (arch guest inside my arch host) I first copy /proc/config.gz of my guest system to the linux source code directory, rename it to .config, and just compile it. After that I copy the image under arch/x86/bzImage to /boot directory, then I follow the instruction given by the arch wiki to create an entry in grub. Here is my /etc/grub.d/40-custom:

This isn't strictly true, it just makes the process easier because you're starting with a sane .config (assuming you're booted into one of Arch's official kernels at least). You can start from scratch, but you need to know what you're doing.

No need to rebuild everything, just generate an initramfs for the custom kernel. The initramfs contains modules that are specific to a the kernel image that they were generated for; this is probably why /boot/initramfs-linux.img isn't working for you.

If you haven't already tried, see if you can force it into recovery mode to restore it:

[SOLVED] Uvesafb compiled into the kernel.

I'm having some trouble getting uvesafb to work...
As far as I know, compiling it into the kernel is possible, but when I do I can't get it to work the following appears at boot time:
uvesafb: failed to execute /sbin/v86d
uvesafb: make sure that the v86d helper is installed and executable
uvesafb: Getting VBE info block failed (eax=0x4f00, err=-2)
uvesafb: vbe_init() failed with -22
uvesafb: probe of uvesafb.0 failed with error -22
v86d is correctly installed and in place so I don't know why it's finding it. As I have /boot in a separate partition I tried even copying the executable to /, /boot and /boot/grub and changing where to find it in the kernel command line, none of it worked.
I was able to get it to work compiling it as a module and specifying it in the MODULES array in the kernel (I'm not using initramfs so I can't specify it in the mods array in mkinitcpio.conf), but it started way to late.
Any suggestion?

I'm thinking it can not find v86d that early in the boot process, for the simple reason that your root filesystem is not mounted yet.
Perhaps a way to solve that would be to include the neccessary files to run v86d in the initramfs, but you are not using initramfs. And I do not know of another easy way to include the files that quick in the boot process.
But I am curious about something, why does uvesafb start "way too late" for you? You want to be able to read your kernel messages roll by in the full resolution of your screen? Want to get a fancy bootscreen using a splash of some sort? Another reason?

Unicode and Date fields crash the kernel

Hi,
we ran into a bug in the query parser while testing our system with japanese dates, that crashes the kernel when a date/time/timestamp field is compared to a literal that contains a unicode character.
For instance,
select * from dual where now() = '2011年10月12日'
will crash the kernel (7.7 or 7.8)
Normally the date field should be compared only with strings in ISO format, but we fear some wrongly written query will crash our production database.
Is that a known bug and is there a workaround ?

this is a bug whereas not a known one up to now. We will solve this ASAP and have created an entry in our error database: [1239879|http://maxdb.sap.com/webpts?wptsdetail=yes&ErrorType=0&ErrorID=1239879].
Unfortunately there is no other workaround for this error than not to use UNICODE characters in those queries.

This typically happens when some apps on the phone were interrupted by the upgrade. When it comes back up the app tries to resume and can not. You have to find and kill that app(s).
Do you have an Exchange account?
That is usually the culprit. Go into Settings and turn off all of the toggles for the Exchange account. Then reset the phone (hold the Sleep/Wake and Home buttons and don’t let go until the screen goes dark and the Apple logo appears). When the phone powers back on, turn the toggles back on.
Do the same for all mail accounts if you don't have Exchange or that doesn't resolve the issue.
If it is not Exchange/Mail then it could be another app(s).
With iOS 7 you can control what apps run in the background. Go to Settings > General > Background App Refresh. This will list all of the apps that can run in background. Turn them all off and restart. If this fixes the problem turn on a few at a time until you find the one causing the trouble.

You've got to be freakin' kidding me. I'm in Brazil, I accidentally started a 2.2GB download that it says will take 592 minutes to download, and there's no way I can stop it and download something else until that first download finishes? I would have thought it was unthinkable 15 years ago that anyone would build an app that downloads things but doesn't allow the option of canceling the download, but in this day and age? So much for Apple making intuitive, user-friendly products.

When closing my Firefox window, all processes are not closing requiring me to open task manager and kill the process before using Firefox again. Received recent upgrade and hasn't worked right since then.

I open Firefox, use it, then close the window. Try to reopen Firefox and it fails with a message that a previous process is still running. Requires me to open Task Manager and kill the old process.

Try to wait a bit longer before reopening Firefox to give Firefox more time to close completely.<br />
Try to use "Firefox/File > Exit" (Mac: "Firefox > Quit"; Linux: "File > Quit") to close Firefox if you are currently doing that by clicking the close X on the title bar.

On your iPhone, try toggling Find My iPhone off, then back on after a few seconds.

If nothing works, you most likely have a hardware failure. Make an appointment at an Apple store to confirm.

I have two albums (RCA Sweeny Todd 2 discs set and RCA Into the Woods 1 disc) where the songs are listed as being on the same album on the list view, but do not group together on the iPod, so the songs can't play consecutively, or in the proper order.

UPDATE: This behavior (to an extent) still happens when "Repeat Album" is off. Instead of an infinite loop, it goes through all the tracks on the album (unsuccessfully) and kicks me out to the Album overview screen. Going back to list of Albums and tapping the Album again brings up "No Content: You can download music from the iTunes Store" but that screen immediately kicks me back to list of Albums.
So I am just even more confused now.
