KT2 Combo Shutdown Problem

I recently purchased an MSI KT2 Combo mobo and set it up with an AMD Athlon XP 2000+ CPU and 256MB DDR400.
All was going well until I went to shut the PC down from WinXP SP1 for the first time.  The system shutdown like it was an AT mobo, ie. the message "it is now safe to turn your computer off" message appeared instead of the PC just powering off.  I have been unable to remedy the situation despite many changes to the BIOS power management settings.
Can anyone help me with this?  Or is my mobo faulty?  Thanks.
Morphius.

Need more help please.
Tried all suggestions in thread: Changing HALs on win2000/XP (ACPI/APM/APIC)
NT APM/Legacy Interface Node installed and enabled.  This brought up the "APM" tab in power options and APM is enabled.
PC type is "MPS Uniprocessor".  Tried "MPS Multiprocessor" - no go.  I think that if I could get the type to "ACPI Multiprocessor" it should work but not sure how to do that.
BIOS settings are basically all power management options set to on except for events which are all disabled.
Anyone know how to fix this?  Thanks.

  • KT2 Combo Problems

    Hi
I just got a kt2 combo motherboard to work with my nice shiney new 2400xp and have encountered a number of problems
    System:
    xp 2400
    kt2 combo
    geforce 3 ti200 64mb
    40gb maxtor
    400 watt psu  (3v/24A  5v/35A  12v/12A)
    512mb pc133 sdram cas 2.5
securely mounted hs/f cpu temp 38C
First of all i had problems with the board freezing in the bios screen, tried to update it with file from the msi website, it returns an error saying i cant update the bios (yes it is the correct bios update)
When i attempt to install windows xp pro , it completes upto the second copying files to hdd, where it freezes at 2% completed. i cant get any further than this.
Any ideas..... I have seen on previous posts that the 12v rail of my psu is below reccomendations for a future proof psu, it is sufficient to run this board with the above hardware?  the previous motherboard was a abit kt7a with a 1.4 t-bird cpu, so i assumed it would all be fine.
    Thanks in advance
    Dan

Hi Thanks for hte prompt reply
i have several sticks of ram which i have tried, unfortunatly they are all generic modules,
i have 1x512mb pc133 cas2.5, 2x64mb, and 2x128 mb, all of them have been used in a system at fsb 133 before, im sure i tried them at pc100 and it didnt work, but i will go give it a try now.
Any ideas on the bios not accepting hte flash?, its this that leads me to believe i have a faulty board, but im open to ideas/sugestions
    Thanks

  • Clock problem and shutdown problem! Are they related?

Having a problem with my Dual 2 GHz Power Mac G5
A few days ago I noticed that my clock was not showing in the menu bar in the upper right corner of my desktop.
I went into System Preferences and went to Date & Time. Under the clock tab “Show Date and Time in Menu Bar” the box was not checked off. I checked it off and went to the “Date and Time” tab. The date and time was correct. I then checked the box “Click the lock to prevent further changes” to lock it. The date and time did not show up in the menu bar. I then went back to the tab “Show Date and Time in Menu Bar” and the box I checked was not checked off even thought the lock was still locked.
I then moved my cursor up to the menu bar in the upper right corner to see what would happen and the spinning beach ball started up but only for the original icons such as Bluetooth, Mobile Me (which I do not use), Time Machine, Spaces (doesn’t indicated the number when I switch Spaces, etc. The icons Norton Anti Virus and Tech Tool Pro in the menu bar are okay.
Also, when I attempt to shut down my computer the system clears the icons from my desktop except for a picture I have on my desktop and I get a gray wheel spinning and the system just hangs until I press and hold the on/off switch. I don’t know if the clock and shutdown problems are related.
The only new software I loaded recently was Skype with Logitech WebCam for the Mac and Quicken 2007 (Had a problem with Quicken 2006). They both are working okay.
And ideas on why I cannot get my clock to show up and my computer to shutdown?

You may have to consider a new post in the Hardware forum area for the computer
model and build/year; if there is a possibility of some basis the matter could be in
the machine and not the software running within it.
Your last two/three posts are in the Leopard 10.5(.8) forum area and do indicate
some kind of problem where troubleshooting the computer to discover if the matter
at hand would be either hardware or software based, may be the way to go.
The link to the 10.6 Snow Leopard forum won't be of help if your computer is a
PPC-based G5 tower, or other older pre-Intel configuration. And I remember
your earlier questions about the iMac G4 and some other issues in the past.
You may ask the moderators to put your post in a new thread of its own, in the
Leopard 10.5 area; so as to not 'piggy-back' another topic; even though some
of the odd issues you've had seem similar to this OP's topic line and appear to
    be in the same general series of hardware. {The question here seems valid.}
The routine suggestions to check, test, verify, and perhaps repair or replace
the system; save a bootable clone to suitable external standalone device if
testing a suspect computer's viability is recommended; and the basics if not
already tried to help isolate the issue(s) as you've posted elsewhere, may be
of some help to try and do; so in that matter, a new thread of your own is best
for your own directed feedback. Since this kind of advice applies to most any
situation, including troubleshooting what may be hardware or software, I'm
adding my two and three-tenths cents worth here.
Your original included Apple Hardware Test may be of some help, in the process
of elimination; but is not conclusive, so other methods would be also suggested.
Some ideas appear to cover the same ground. However, system corruption or
disc failure can also manifest itself in odd ways & affect things indirectly for a time.

So, at the risk of inadvertently alienating the OP, I am posting this as
a general help to following readers at some later time; and it may not
be too simple for a refresh course.
Some software issues can be resolved by repairing disk permissions,
and re-applying the last OS X update Combo file over the same one
already in the system; or if not up-to-date already, check & repair all
the general items and then apply the last Combo update.
A too-full hard disk drive can compromise the system integrity, so that
is a matter of course to keep up on what resources exist and remain
for the OS X to function correctly and for apps to multi-task together.
    However that works out...
    Good luck & happy computing!

  • KT2 COMBO, Is 12v power Connector Needed?

Just Bought a "KT2 COMBO" to upgrade mi good old 6330 lite, and add some 2100 DDR Ram, and a new xp processor ( 2000+ ).
The problem is I'm using the same case, and the power supply in it has no 12 V ATX Power connector.
In the Quick User Guide, it refers to it (p 2-9), saying it's to provide power to the CPU.
Would the system work ok if I use only the main power connector?
Has anyone tried using it this way?

If you don't have stability problems it's probably fine.
You can buy an adapter to allow you to convert a mulex ( like you plug into an HDD ) to the 4 pin 12V plug.
If you don't have one you might try looking in local shops for butn out PSUs that have them, cut the wire and solder it to your PSU's output ( yellow to yellow, black to black )

  • KT2 Combo D-Link Indicated CPU Error

    I'm having problems with a new KT2 Combo-L board.
The board powers up (CPU fan spins), but I get no POST, no beeps, no video.  The D-Link LEDs indicate a CPU error.
The only items on the board are:
-128 MB PC133 RAM Stick (tried 2 diff sticks)
-An old 16MB 3DForce AGP card (which I know works)
--I've previously tried 3 different AGP cards
Both the board and CPU (AMD Athlon XP) are newly purchased.

You sent me a mail and this is my answer, i hope it helps
Disconect the Main power cable, power must be off
Reset the bios of the board , Jumper JBAT1. Instructions found in the
    Manual Page 2-24
Be shure that there no short-circuit with the mounting screws of the
case or any other screws from the case on the back of the board.
Best, take the Board out of the case and put in flat on a table, put
it  on paper or cork, be carefull of electrostatic power.
Put only one RAM into the slot
put Only the graficcard in the board , nothing else
If you have a D-Braket  (page 1-8) connect it to the board and have a look what the Lamps want say to you.
If Power is good, I Think now there are only 3 possibilites
    1. CPU defective, test it on another Mainboard
    or
    2. RAM defective or wrong type, test it on another Mainboard
    or
    3. Graficcard defective, test it on another Mainboard

I have the same problem with mine running Windows 2000.  I'm waiting for a BIOS update from MSI.

  • Sychost.exe error KT2-Combo L

I recently intalled KT2-Combo, 2500+ Barton, 384MB PC133, Asus V7100 Pro64. I have a USB 1.1 hub and a Logitech USB mouse although this was hppening without either connected. The system seems to keep getting an error message thats says something like "sychost.exe has generated errors and program will close" It has some other problems as well like not being able to disconnect from the internet etc. I have w2k and saw the suggestion to disable APCI and reinstall. Does this sound like the answer? I also saw that the BIOS has PCI selected for grphics instead of AGP even though I have an AGP video card. Could that be a problem? The video seems to be working great.

    Such as what?
Why does all the peripherals run fine on Gigabyte motherboard perfectly?
Why does it work OK on Millenium and not XP?
I build a lot of computers and have made  unattended auto installation CD`s for Win 98, Millenium, XP and Winserver 2003 and all run great on Gigabyte motherboards and Abit motherboards.
MSI has no tech support and a lousy website with no update driver or bios history detailing reasons for changes.
I am going to try the lousy motherboard again with new drivers and bios that I downloaded.
The installation CD includes directx8.0B thus it seems that they are way behind where direcyx 9 seems to be current version.
I also have for download, a special Partition Magic and Drive Image bootable CD that makes drive detailing easy but cannot give details in this forum.

  • KT2 Combo No Power Up

I just purchased a new KT2 Combo, new PSU(3.3v/28A 5v/30A 12v/15A), and a retail Athlon xp 2000+.  I put it all together with just a Stealth 3 PCI and 256 PC133 ram, hit the power switch, but nothing moved.  I got no powerup, no fans, nothing. So I tested my components, I switched CPU's, reinstalled the CPU, switch SDRAM, tried a different PSU, but nothing happened.  I have the 133FSB set up, and have tried clearing the cmos a number of times, and still no power up.  Does anyone have any insight into my dilema? I had a problem like this with another computer, but that just turned out to be poor attachment of the CPU.
    Kevin Johnson

As I read in this site a few days ago, most of the problems are from user´s fault. Try taking out the mobo, put it over an insulated surface, install CPU, little grease or heatsink pad, heatsink fan and one memory stick and connect P.S. (suppose the PS is working OK) If fan doesn't work, probably you have a fault Mobo.  8)

  • :censored: are the beep codes? KT2 combo mobo help

yeah, i looked and looked and looked, no where in my motherboard users manual (,  who does that????????)  and there is NO section outlining the beep code values.  ?>??? :O  X(  X(
anyhow, i think my problem is that the system refuses to boot when set to 100mhz FSB.  Since i know that my 1.1ghz T-bird is a 100fsb chip, when i set the fsb to 133 (so that the system would frickin boot), i just get a bunch of beep codes.     The thing is that the board just WILL NOT BOOT when i set the FSB to 100mhz.  if i switch it over to 133, it boots but beeps at me.   Faulty board?   I just barely got it in the mail from newegg.
    thanks.
btw, the proc seems ok.  i've burnt a ton of procs up so i reckognize the smell from a mile away and i dont smell anything.  i'll take off the heatsink now just to be sure.

Thanks, i'm kinda pissed cuz when i put in my 600 mhz Duron, i fried it.  Lord know how as there are NO burn marks ANYWHERE on the chip, but its a goner.  when i took it out i could feel that even the ceramic was hot.   :O  (thats me swearing)
so now i'm down a 1.1 t-bird, a 600 duron, and a KT2 Combo board because it will not boot when you set it to 100 FSB.

  • KT2 Combo+AMD 2000XP+WinXP = headache!

Just put in the KT2 Combo board with an AMD 2000XP chip. These were replacements for my old Biostar and AMD CPU.
The problem I'm having is once XP has booted up I got a lagtime of anything between 30-60 seconds before I can actually use the PC. During this time it won't start any applications and God save me if I hit the Start button!
It'll bring the Start menu up and then freeze until the lagtime is over. After that I can use the PC alright.
I've reinstalled XP 3 times today already. Tested it just on it's own without loading any drivers for any peripherals but it still does the same thing. Can't understand it
I got 256mb PC2100 DDR, GE Force 3 GFX card and not a whole lot else. If anyone has any ideas please, please lemme know as I'm going insane now! Thx

I'll upgrade it but will a 350 do or should I aim for a 400W?
Unimportant, xxxW says nothing. Look for a psu with more than 25A/3.3V, 35A/5V, 18A/12V and 200W combined power and it will be sufficient for a while.

  • KT2 Combo L + Radeon 8500

a friend of mine cannot get a new setup with a shuttle ai61 mobo to work with a radeon 8500 video card. since he wants to spend as little money as possible, i've advised him to get a KT2 Combo L and an XP2200+ cpu (about $110 altogether). this way he can re-use his pc133 ram.
before we buy though - question is, has anyone had any success/problems running a KT2 Combo L with an ati radeon 8500 video card?

Radeons (Ati) cards are most allways tricky to install so generally speaking think you can find some probs.

  • What ram in KT2 Combo

I'm putting together a small system for my son from bits and pieces.  The basis will be an MSI KT2 Combo motherboard and Duron 1300 cpu.
I have checked the manual which states that this board supports PC1600/PC2100 DDR SDRAM.
My problem is that I can only buy PC3200 DDR SDRAM.
Can anyone tell me if I can safely use PC3200 DDR with the KT2 Combo motherboard.
    cheers

If I set the memory speed to 200 in bios will it still work or is that asking for trouble?
    Why ? PC2100 = 266MHz
    PC1600=200MHz
    PC2100=266MHz
    PC2700=333MHz
    PC3200=400MHz
Great thanks.  I didn't realise that.

  • Scsi Boot with KT2 combo -L mobo

Hi I have a KT2 combo -L, I have bought an IDE raid and I need to boot from it, and it says on the instruction that I should select scsi boot from the bios of the mobo. I was looking on the bios and I couldn't find it, so I checked the manual and the manual says that the option should be available, is there anything that I have to activate before I select the scsi boot
    thanks

If you have read it you could see that Adaptec controller is detecting & knowing the CD-ROM's but the MSI mainboard not therefor it couldn't be a cable problem !
