Lab full of imacs

I have a lab full of iMacs that go dim when they go to sleep. I have to select display preferences and move the slider over to full brightness. they continually revert to the lowest selection of dim settings
thanks for any help. also tried deleting preferences. but that doesnt work.

I think you mean that they go dim BEFORE they go to sleep. When they are asleep, the display is off.
Make sure that you have unchecked the option "Automatically reduce the brightness of the display before display sleep" on the Options tab of the Energy Saver preferences.
BTW - Having that checked does annoy some people, but it does save power and extend the life of the display, so in a lab situation it may still be called for.

Since school year has started back. I have a lab of emacs randomly freezing. Does not appear to be applications specific happens randomly in any app. Have done clean install with no help. Some will freeze as a window starts to open with video breakup lines. Other just freeze completely NO distorted video & NO spinning wheel just frozen until you hold powerbutton and restart.
    Thanks in advance

    cadecruickshank,
You're in for a world of pain... we single users think we have it bad... [sorry - that's not helpful]
Just hazarding a guess - 1.25Ghz eMacs purchased mid 04-05?
Time to check them out for bad capacitors, which are covered under Apple's Repair Program:
    http://www.apple.com/au/support/emac/repairextensionprogram/
To do this, open the inspection hatch and check out the 2 capacitors on the right hand side. If they look like a can of coke after it's been left in the freezer overnight - you have the problem.
Some people are experiencing delays in repair time due to a supply issue in obtaining a new logic board... I'm assuming Apple have had to either destroy or replace the caps on their stockpile of eMac 1.25Ghz logic boards (or else they'd just be giving you another logic board that will go bad in 18 months time).
So that's where the pain comes in... Check for bad caps, get on the phone to Apple and see what they say...

  • Central server for house full of iMacs?

hello, ... we have two iMacs in our residence and i am thinking of a third computer (iMac, of course) due to having trouble getting my "turn" with the use of computer time (kid's, wife hogging prime time usage). I have a wireless networking system of course with an Apple Time Capsule. Is there such thing as linking all the iMacs using a separate mac computer tower as a central server to act as a porthole or gateway?

Mac mini with server is definitely one option as described above but it may be more than you need to spend for a simple home sharing setup.
For a number on months, I've been using just the time capsule with a 1Tb USB hard drive and printer attached as my 'porthole' or 'gateway' as you describe. This enabled me to host all my media and stuff which we wanted to share across multiple computers, while the time capsule itself backed up all the machines using Time Machine.
However, I found the performance wasn't very reliable over wireless network only, especially when moving large video files around the house. That, and the need for more storage space has meant I've upgrade to a NAS connected via a Gigabit ethernet switch to the various networked peripherals.
I have a Netgear ReadyNAS Duo, connected by ethernet via a Netgear switch to my Time Capsule which creates the wireless-N network for my house - i have an ADSL2+ modem supplied by my ISP which connects to the internet.
This setup allows me to connect a late 2009 iMac 27 (wired), an older iMac 14inch (wireless) which I use for browsing in bed, on the sofa etc, and two work PCs (Windows laptops via wireless and/or fixed depending on location), plus a few other network media bits connected to my TV etc.
I've found the addition of a dedicated network switch (i have the 16 port Netgear Pro safe) has made a big difference to the speed and reliability of connections to the various network devices.
Depending on the number of devices you want to connect, you can omit the network switch and continue to share a USB printer and hard drive etc using just a Time Capsule in this set up.
    Hope this helps.

  • Internet Explorer and FLASH??

I need help installing Flash Plug-in for Mac Version of Internet Explorer.  Adobe website doesn't seem to offer a version of Flash Player for IE on Mac.  Am I missing something?
Problem:  We have a website which requires IE.  We have a lab full of iMacs.  Safari/Firefox/Opera will NOT open the pages but IE does...EXCEPT a few of the pages require Adobe Flash Player to be installed and I can't figure out how to install the Flash Player Plug-in for Mac OSX/IE.
IE does have a popup indicating it is missing a plug-in for Flash and directs you to the Adobe Site BUT there is no Flash Plug-in listed for OS: Mac OS X and Browser: IE.
Is it even possible to view Flash Content on IE for Mac?
I know how many mac fan boys are...so...please don't offer suggestions of VMWare/Parallels/Bootcamp/etc. or state that IE is inferior and I should be using Safari/Firefox/Opera/Etc.  Those aren't options.  If you know how to install Adobe Flash Player Plug-in for Mac OSX Internet Explorer, that's what I need.
Thanks in advance for your words of wisdom!

I assume you're speaking about IE 5.2, the last Mac version of IE? No way I know of to view Flash Content.
Have you tried changing the User Agent on Safari, Opera, FireFox, iCab etc. to some IE version?

  • Albumdata.xml

I was wondering if anyone has seen this problem. We have a lab full of iMacs, Intel 2.66 Core Duos running 10.5.5. We redirect the iPhoto libraries to a Win2003 server through SMB. Since we went from 10.4 to 10.5 and iLife 08 we have had a problem with the albumdata.xml file. It appears that after we import new pictures in iPhoto we cannot see them in the other iLife apps. I delete the albumdata.xml and it works, however the albumdata.xml still isn't written to with any future imports, so we end up having to delete the albumdata.xml on a regular basis. The users have full permissions to their Pictures library, does anyone have any idea what I can do for a permanent fix?
    Thanks

Welcome to the Apple user discussion forums
iPhoto does not like the iPhoto library being on a PC formated disk - probably the only real solution is to put the iPhoto libraries on a Mac formatted disk

  • Shortcut to close multiple apps

I teach elementary school and we have a computer lab full of iMacs. Often when we go to the lab, many of the computers have several apps open. Currently we have to go to the doc and quit each app individually or go to the Apple and use force quit. Is there any keyboard shortcut we can use (or create) to close multiple open applications. Thanks.

    Richard,
there’s no keyboard shortcut that closes all active apps (without also restarting or shutting down), but this might work for you.

  • 24" iMac harddrive failures abounding!!!!!!

Every one of our 24" iMac harddrives have failed over the past year.
    Let me explain......
We have 20 - 24" iMacs, 18 - 20" iMacs. All purchaced in bulk in 2007 and 2008. We are basially a Mac shop that comprises of 30% Macs, the rest PC.
The first hardrive failure was in November of 2009. From that point till now we have had to replace 12 drives, all on the 24" iMacs. As a precation, we are replacing drives in two more iMacs that are out of warranty. Leaving 4 iMacs that are still under warranty.
Given the extent of the failures we are experiencing and regardless of any warranty, Apple should be replacing the drives for us. They won't because the one year warranty expired on many of these a few months ago.
Let me point out, that none of the 20" iMacs have had harddrive failures.
It is hardly a coincidence. This points to bad design and a failure for Apple to control quality. If someone from Apple wants to contact me about this, please do so through this post.

Yeah, I had to do a few HDD and even logic board replacements on Mid-2007 24" iMacs once upon a time. Strangely enough, people here didn't want to believe me.
It was at a university where they had two labs full of 20" models, and only a handful of 24" models, but only the 24" ones had a problem. Just be sure you catch it quick, because they will roast your logic board if you don't.
This is also why you should try to stagger your purchasing. Replace a few systems every month, so if there's a bad run of systems, you won't have a bunch of systems down at the same time.

  • Screen Sharing Available - In Lab Use

I teach in a computer lab with 28 imacs. Recently my Remote Desktop (3.2.2) is showing the all imacs in the lab, but some of the imacs are showing Current Status: "Screen Sharing Available" and I can't control them. The other half or so show exactly what program the user is currently using. What setting has changed on their computer. How can I fix this?

I think I've got the answer. ARD-related ports must me open for BOTH client and admin computers. Although my remote client (which is in another city) is connected directly to a cable modem via ethernet (so there's no need to map any ports) my ADMIN computer was behind an Airport Extreme Base Station. I thought there was no need to do any port mapping on this router because I was not the client, but since full ARD control consists in information both coming from AND going to the admin, ports must be mapped in both points of the "net". So I enabled "Apple Remote Desktop" under "Advanced> Port Mapping" in Airport Utility and now I'm not having problems anymore. If your router is not Airport Extreme, then you should open ports 3283 and 5900 (both TCP and UDP) in all your routers. If it is a local network, then the ports must me mapped to the admin computer's IP address.

  • Installing Final Cut Pro (or similar "big" app) in lab setting via ARD

Has anybody successfully installed a suite of apps such as FCP or Adobe CS3 via the package install option in Remote Desktop 3? I'm trying to push out the latest Final Cut suite to an ARD-managed lab of 15 iMacs and it is failing?
    TIA.
    -Mike

Here's what we're doing at my independent art college.
We make IMAGES from a sample computer.
Take one G5, and PARTITION it.
Make the 2nd partition about 60-80GB.
You need to do this BEFORE you install FCP.
Install all your programs as normal, but when you install iLife and Garageband and Final Cut Studio, take advantage of a feature in their installers; you can TARGET A DIFFERENT DISK to store you LOOPS and SUPPORT FILES ON. (That's why we name the 2nd partition "Support Files and Loops".) This installs the proper paths into the source of the applications.
After all installs are complete, create a Network Boot Image from the First Parition ("Macintosh HD").
Now, this won't have ANY support files in it. So it will be smaller. We got ours down to around 17GB. NETBOOT the lab, partition each client machine (press CMD-D at the Netboot dialog to launch disk utility), and then install the Previous Image on the First Partition.
When that's done you'll have a lab full of FCP waiting to find its "Support Files and Loops".
    That's the hard part.
I tried using ARD to move out the 55GB to each client machine.
It works well going to one locked machine at a time. Using a Firewire drive with the 55GB on it connected to the ARD control machine, you can simply control a client and drag the files from the FW Drive on the control machine to Partition on the client machine. It took about an hour for each client and trying to do more than one at a time made the process freak out.
I am trying to use the COPY ITEMS command but the MULTICASTING is wrecking our IP telephones.
I tried to schedule it for the middle of the night and it worked the first time for 4 computers at once. But last night I tried 12 at once and almost all failed out. After I Controlled a couple who had stalled the process started up again and then with only ONE client machine being copied, the **** thing multicasted and I found out later that it squeezed out a bunch of administrator's phones again!!! Ugh. Now I look wreckless! (The reason I am on this board is to find out how to NOT Multicast.)
The solution we found was to use sneakernet in the form of student workers and firewire drives, making local, individual copies to the client machines.
If anyone knows how to turn of Multicast in ARD, please let me know. As for the topic of this thread, FCS certainly CAN be installed, but the Support Files and Loops are the challenge.
    Good luck.

  • Is there a way to duplicate a User Account when setting up an iMac

I have a lab of 30 iMac computers.  I am planning on imaging 29 of them from 1 master machine.  In the process of setting this one machine up, I need to create 4 user accounts that will have identical settings, but will simply have different names.  Each account is for a different period of the Intro to Video Class I teach.  Instead of having to go through each User account and change each setting, can I create one profile and then make copies of this profile and rename it to the different class periods I teach.  These User accounts are not administrator accounts.  The will have limited access.

Thank you for your replies.  I am setting up one machine perfectly, so that I can use that machine to image the other 29 machines. My issue is that in setting up the one perfect machine I need to create 6 different User Accounts on the machine. Four of the User Accounts are perfectly identical except for the name of the User Account. It takes a lot of time to set up the Dock and all the user preferences of each of these User Accounts. I am looking for a way to duplicate the User Accounts so that I can same some time.  I want to create one user account, set it up with all the details and then duplicate it three more times.

  • Need suggestion on locking down student imacs

Hello, I just inherited a handful of computer labs. 8 imacs each spread out between 5 schools. 3 labs have internet access and 2 labs do not. Since I'm a complete noob when it comes to Mac OS Security what would someone recommend as my first step to locking down the computers. The students have tons of shortcuts on the desktop, downloaded mp3's, movies, myspace, facebook etc..It's a mess. Is there any 3rd party software that can manage desktops or can Mac OS do it all?
    Thanks

Oh another Internet one I forgot...

For even more control you can do Get Infos from the finder on the files/folders and change permissions so they can't write, only read, or no access.

  • Send As, Send on Behalf and Full Access for Exchange server 2010/2013

    [This FAQ contains 2 parts]
Testing and watching the behavior of Send As, Send On Behalf and Full Access permission.
Common issue and Troubleshooting on the three permission.
    [Testing and Watching]
Based on following blog, I decide to test on my lab:
Full Mailbox Access Rights + Send On Behalf = Send As ?
    http://blogs.technet.com/b/ehlro/archive/2012/04/06/full-mailbox-access-rights-send-on-behalf-send-as.aspx
Description on my lab and test:
    Exchange 2010 + Outlook 2010
    Exchange 2013 + Outlook 2013
    Senders: A01, A02, … , A07, A08
    Recipient: A09
A01 grand permission to other senders.
    Two methods:
    a. Use A0x’s credential configure A01’s profile, then send From both A01 and A0x via Outlook. Watching result in A09’s Inbox and Sent Items which has message copy left.
    b. Use A0x’s credential configure A0x’s profile, then send From both A01 and A0x via Outlook. Watching result in A09’s Inbox and Sent Items which has message copy left.
    Result as following forms:
    1. Exchange 2010 + Outlook 2010 / Exchange 2013 + Outlook 2013
Using A0x’s credential configure A01’s mailbox, then send From both A01 and A0x
    To A09.
    2. Exchange 2010 + Outlook 2010 / Exchange 2013 + Outlook 2013
Using A0x’s credential configure A0x’s mailbox, then send From both A01 and A0x
    To A09.
    [Common Issue]
    1. [Issue]
    Exchange 2010 + Outlook 2010. A01 grand A03 Send As permission. However A03 can’t send as A01 to A09 and get NDR:
You can’t send a message on behalf of this user unless you have permission to do so. Please make sure you’re sending on behalf of the correct sender, or request the necessary permission. If the problem continues, please contact your helpdesk.
    Details as following pic:
    [Troubleshooting]
    1) Based on the NDR, it seems a permission issue. Check Send As permission, however the Send As permission configured correctly. Pic as below:
    2) ince the Send As permission configured correctly, it seems the permission hasn’t been replicated. Try to restart Microsoft Exchange Information Store service. It works.
Note: The Send As permission isn’t granted until after replication has occurred. Replication times depend on your Exchange and network configuration. To grant the permission immediately, stop and then restart the Microsoft Exchange Information
    Store service.
    2. [Issue]
    Exchange 2013 + Outlook 2013. A01 grand A03 Send As permission. However A03 can’t send as A01 to A09 and get NDR:
Your message did not reach some or all of the intended recipients.
    Subject: xxx
    Sent: xx/xx/2014 8:20 AM
The following recipient(s) cannot be reached: A09
This message could not be sent. Try sending the message again later, or contact your network administrator. Error is [0x80070005-00000000-00000000].
    Details as below:
    [Troubleshooting]
    1) Also check the Send As permission configuration first.
    2) Then try to use A03 send as A01 to A09 via OWA. If OWA works well, it seems and issue on the Outlook client side.
    3) This behavior may occur if the OAB in Outlook isn’t updated. Try to download OAB manually.
    4) If doesn’t work, please close Outlook and try to delete all the OAB folder on your computer. The path of OAB folder in Win7, Win8 as below:
    \Users\<UserName>\AppData\Local\Microsoft\Outlook\Offline Address Books
    5) Restart Outlook.
Note: Be aware that you cannot send e-mail messages on behalf of a mailbox if the mailbox is hidden from address list. When sending a message, Exchange requires that e-mail address is resolved in the
    From field.
    3. [Issue]
Exchange 2010. A01 grant A0x “Send As” or “Send on Behalf” permission. A0x send as/ send on behalf of A01. The message is only copied to the Sent Items folder in A0x’s mailbox (same as the result of my test). Also cannot configure Exchange 2010 so that the
message is copied to the Sent Items folder of both A01 and A0x.
    [Troubleshooting]
This issue occurs because Exchange server 2010 was designed to copy message to the Sent Items folder of the sender only. This issue can be solved by installing Exchange 2010 SP2 UR4. More details in the following KB:
Messages that are sent by using the "Send As" and "Send on behalf" permissions are copied only to the Sent Items folder of the sender in an Exchange Server 2010 environment

Nice guide Mavis, I recently explored the same topic. Few things you might want to add is the type of connectivity (Cached vs Online will produce different results) and to expand further on the methods of adding the other mailbox in Outlook (additional mailbox
vs additional account defaults to different methods). Check the screenshot:
And please post this somewhere more visible, like blog/wiki page.

  • Connection iMac and macbook pro retina

I am newbie to mac and apple computers. I just bought the mac book pro retina display. My lab owns an iMac which I have no idea what the model is (probably before mid 2011). I am trying to use my iMac as an external display from my macbook pro retina. Do you think it would work with mini display cable or thunderbolt cable. I am trying to avoid paying for thunderbolt cable as they are so much more expensive than mini display port. Thanks

Although Target Display Mode was offered on some previous iMacs, I understand that it is not available on the Retina 5K (supposedly because the current DisplayPort standard doesn't support a high enough refresh rate to drive a 5K display).
