LaCie hd Mac vanished from Finder

I have a LaCie external HD (1TB) named fred attached directly to my Mac by firewire. It used to be connected to usb port and the problem started in that configuration so I tried a different connection to see if that fixed it. It didn't.
A few days ago, the icon for fred vanished from my desktop and from the Finder. The drive still shows in Disk Utility and programs that have recently saved files to "fred" can still open them by doing File>Open recent. I have verified the disk and repaired permissions on my Mac's hard drive with no joy.
There is an article at:
http://theappleblog.com/2008/03/13/invisibility-and-metadata/
That seems to describe this problem and offers a solution by typing 2 lines into the Terminal. This is my first experience with Terminal.
xattr -d com.apple.metadata:kMDItemFinderComment /*
where the /* stands for the path and name of the volume to be effected.
the second line is
chflags nohidden /*
but I never get passed the first line. No matter what I type for the name of the Volume (that i got from Disk Utility) I get a "no such file" message.
Any one know where I am going wrong or if there is a simple thing I'm missing or even a not so simple thing. Even point me in the right direction would be appreciated.

See this tutorial by Francine on the invisible drive problem.
Hope this helps...

  • Mac Help from finder help crashes

    Hi all-
when I try to select "Mac Help" from the finder's help menu, the help viewer appears for a short time (with no content), then disappears.
If I open the help viewer manually (via the app folder, or spotlight) it works fine. I have repaired permissions.
    Thanks,
    -jamie

  • Files on SMB share vanishing from Finder

    Hi,
I got a brand new 13" Macbook Pro Retina running OS X Mavericks and I noticed some very odd behaviour when looking at folders on my fileserver containing solely JPGs.
It is kind of hard to explain, but I have made a video of it so you can see the effect for yourselves:
    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=smjM7OzTOi0
Basically what happens is when I browse to the folder, all the files just start disappearing from the finder. Requesting info on the folder shows they're still there but I cannot see them anymore. If I mess around with the various view options for the folder for long enough they seem to reappear sometimes.
This is pretty bad. Anyone have an idea on how to fix this or what might cause it? The fileserver is a simple QNAP box that did not have this issue with the previous Macbook I had running 10.8 nor with any other device I own so I doubt the problem is on that end.
Any help would be greately appreciated.

    Hi,
same problem here. I upgraded my MacBook Pro Retina to 10.9 yesterday. Files are still there as you can see in a terminal window...

  • How can I find my email in Apple Mail from before my company switched hosting providers?  People with Outlook have all of their old and new emails.  My old emails have vanished from Apple Mail.

How can I find my email in Apple Mail from before my company switched hosting providers?  People with Outlook in my company have all of their old and new emails.  My old emails have vanished from my Apple Mailbox on my macbook and other Apple devices.  I do not have my mail backed up in time machine recently nor did I export my emailbox recently.  Any ideas?

Try looking in your User folder.
Either hold down the option key while using the Finder “Go To Folder” command and select your user Library in your home folder or use the Finder “Go To Folder” command and enter ~/Library/Mail/V2
If you prefer to make your User library permanently visible, use the Terminal command found below.
    Show User Library
You might want to bookmark the command. I have to use it again after every update. I have also been informed that if you drag the user library to Finder it will remain visible.

  • When I try to open my Address Book from Finder, it says :You can't use this version with this version of Mac OS x. I have Address Book 5.0.3 and Mac OS X 10.7.5 What should I do to get my Address Book back???

When I try to open my Address Book from Finder, it says :You can't use this version with this version of Mac OS x. I have Address Book 5.0.3 and Mac OS X 10.7.5 What should I do to get my Address Book back???

Unless you deleted Address Book 6, or restored from a backup made before you upgraded to Lion, Address Book 6 should be on your disk somewhere.  Try to find it with spotlight or by browsing likely folders with Finder.  Also check Trash. If you find other Address Books, using Quick View or Get Info in Finder should show the version number.
Have you ever moved Address Book out of the Applications folder, either before or after you upgraded to Lion?
If you can't figure out how this happened in the first place, I would be worried that other OS X utilities are similarly affected.

  • Macbook stolen and recovered, but i delated it from my devices, how can I bring it back without had the drive erased and blocked as I ordered from ''find my Mac''?

I had my Macbook Pro stolen about a month ago... so i went inmediately to ''find my Mac'' and ordered the system to erase the drive and block the Mac as soon as conected to interent.
I recovered the device a week later, so before turning it on, i went to ''find my mac'' and couldnt find any other option to tell the system that i found my stole device, so i clicked ''forget device''
i turned the Macbbok on, and nothing happened, it worked perfectly.  but it doesnt appear anmore on my devices.
is there any way to get it back to ''my devices'', and use features such as ''find my mac'' wothout bringing the order from the system to erase and block the device as i ordered before??????
    thanks a lot!!!
    Arturo.

You must take it back to Apple
They are the only ones that remove the block

You can write to Apple with the serial number and they can tell you exactly when your MacPro (as opposed to Mac Book Pro) was manufactured.
And in the Apple menu > about this Mac >  more info > there should be sufficient detail to narrow it down.
EDIT.  These are the specs for the      April 2007 version.

  • Can't deregister my iMac from Find my Mac

I recently sold my iMac.  I forgot to deregister it from Find My Mac.  I can't seem to find any way to remove it from my account.  Is there any way to do this?  It doesn't really hurt anything, but it annoys me to have a device in my account that isn't mine anymore.

Did you go to https://supportprofile.apple.com and click on the arrow next to the product that you have registered? Once you do that you will see a button that says unregister.

  • Mac: can I drag and drop files from Finder into Files panel

I am relatively new to Mac so forgive me if this is obvious.
I just switched from Windows to Mac and now something I used to
know how to do in Windows I can't figure out how to do on Mac. In
Windows I used to open an Explorer window over Dreamweaver, select
some files, and drap and drop them into the Files panel in
Dreamweaver, and they would be sucked in.
Now on the Mac whenever I select the Finder window to select
files to drag and drop, the Dreamweaver panels disappear
completely, rather than just move beneath the Finder window. So
when I'm ready to drag and drop there's no Dreamweaver to drop
into. I see that if I put focus on Dreamweaver, then Finder won't
disappear, and I can click on Finder to begin a drag without
Dreamweaver disappearing but then it is unresponsive to a drop.
In short, I can't seem to drag and drop files from Finder
into Dreamweaver on the Mac. Am I missing something? I'm using
Dreamweaver CS3 on Leopard if that makes any difference.
    Thanks,
    Jan

I don't believe you can do this on the Mac platform. The only
other thing you could try is to use Spaces and have the Finder open
in one Space and then drag it over to Dreamweaver in another space.
Outside of that I can't think of how this would work.

  • Emails vanish from .mac account when deleting them from iphone!

The problem we are having is that on my wifes minimac when she deletes emails on her iphone they vanish from her desktop .mac mail programme.. not good!
But.... my email on my G5 .mac mail programme account is set to .Mac IMAP and my emails that come into my iphone dont get deleted from my desktop .mac mail programme.
How can i set up her account to not delete the mails from her minimac mail account?
Her email is an additional account - whereas my account is the master account!
    can anyone help?

If you are accessing the account as an IMAP account with the email client on your computer as well as with the iPhone's email client, all server stored mailboxes are kept synchronized automatically between the email clients used to access the account. This cannot be changed. If you delete a message from the account's Inbox mailbox with the iPhone's email client, the message will no longer be available in the account's Inbox mailbox when checking the account with your computer's email client and vice-versa.
This is the nature of an IMAP account which cannot be changed.
If this is not the same for your account, this indicates you are accessing the account as a POP account with one or both email clients used to access the account.

  • "Shared" vanishes from the Finder????

Hi, "Shared" has vanished from my finder on my PMG5 running 10.5.4 and have no clue how it happened or how to bring it back? It's fine on my MPB, and the finder preferences are exact? Tech support tried to help out but couldn't figure it out without charging me. It seems like it would be a deceptively easy fix but I am at a loss. Thanks in advance for your help!

Try CMD K, then remove them from the list.

  • I have a macbook pro and installed microsoft office 2011 on it a few months ago. I cant open word at all and it has now vanished from my icons list at bottom of macbook. How can i restore this or find it?

cant seem to open up word documents. I installed original disk a few months ago and was working fine up until yesterday. When i went to open up word a question mark would appear in the backround and now the WORD icon has dissapeared all together.Any way of fixing the problem?

Use Finder and search for 'Microsoft Word'.  If it shows up, launch it from Finder and when it appears in Dock, right click the icon and select Options > Keep in dock.
If finder does not find Word it has somehow been deleted.

  • LaCie Hard Drive vanishes after 10.4.9 update...

I've seen this complaint all over the web, but I've seen no helpful solutions from Apple or anyone else. Here's what happened to me.
First off, this is CLEARLY a problem with the latest software update 10.4.9, NOT a problem with my drive, and I'll tell you why in a minute...
After updating my OS to 10.4.9 and restarting the computer, my LaCie 500 gigabyte USB drive's icons vanished from my desktop. I tried ALL of the recommended fixes, including dropping $100.00 on Diskwarrior. Nothing worked.
    Here's the clincher:
I got the bright idea to take my LaCie Drive over to my father-in-law's Mac, which he rarely updates. Sure enough, he had 10.4.8 installed, and my LaCie drive mounted just fine.
As an experiment, I then updated his computer to 10.4.9.
Guess what? The drive disappeared from his computer upon restart!
There is CLEARLY a problem with the 10.4.9 update in reference to external USB hardware at least, if not Firewire as well. I've read at least 50 similar complaints on various forums, and can only assume Apple has realized its error and is working on an update to 10.4.9 at this moment.
I'm going to call Applecare ths afternoon and report the problem. Good luck, all.
    - Brainclaw

    Thanks for replying!
I spoke to Applecare last week; two different people. The first one was a frontline tech support person who claimed to know nothing about these problems. I was then referred to a higher-up person who said he HAD heard about these problems, but was very non-committal about it. I have his number and was told to call back after this Thursday (03-29-07) to check up on it.
With the massive amount of people having the same problem, you'd think a fix would be forthcoming. I recommended to the Mac people at work NOT to run the 10.4.9 updater until Apple gets this resolved, as we rely on our external hard drives rather heavily.
I hope Apple releases a fix soon... more news as I get it.

  • Firefox said it would update itself on launch, and then promptly vanished from my program list and desktop, though the file remains in cdrive program files, how do I restore functionality?

I fired it up on switching on the computer, firefox then posted the usual installing updates, firefox will start in a few seconds message, and then the icon promptly vanished from my desktop screen and the program list in the startup menu, though the program files are still listed on the hard drive. I waited awhile, and then rebooted the computer, to find its still vanished.
