(Layering Issues) Transparent Terminal, Part of desktop.

I'm aware there is a wiki post about this, and I will get to that.
I've been trying to run a terminal as part of my desktop, and I've run into a bit of annoyance. So far I have tried:
Gnome-Terminal + Devilspie (From the wiki, did not work)
This failed to auto start correctly, and failed to strip the window of it's borders.
Tilda
Has a control fight with the desktop and inactive windows, this is the annoyance. For example, if I have a window placed inactive on the desktop, Tilda's window will override it, and I will not be able to 'grab' the window.
What I am looking for:
A terminal as part of my desktop running on the same 'layer' as the desktop, and the ability to be able to use the desktop on the terminal's window space. I realize this would negate any right click options the terminal itself may have, but I am fine with this.
The desktop enviornment I am using is cinnamon-git from the AUR. CInnamon is heavily based off of Gnome 3, so any Gnome 3 applicable ideas may work.
If there have been any previous posts about this topic, I apologize and will be happily redirected to said post.
Thanks,
  Multimoon

It's certainly possible to write a program to do this - but I'm skeptical that it has been done.  If it has it would be implemented in a different desktop manager, not a different terminal, so that's where you should be looking.  I dont know if your DE would play nicely with an alternate desktop manager though.
The desktop manger would have to create a transparent desktop window, manage icons and do everything you want the desktop to do, AND generate XSendEvent events to pass anything else on to the terminal.

  • Address Book write LDAP server command via terminal or remote desktop

    Hi folks.
I was wondering if anyone has had any experience issuing an 'address book' setting command, to ADD an LDAP entry, via terminal or remote desktop?
In particular, I want to "ADD" a new "LDAP" entry for a specific server, on 40 workstations, using terminal or remote desktop, so that I don't have to leave my desk
I recall that you can issue commands from the terminal, starting with "write"... to add such preferences.
    Any thoughts, ideas, or inspiration?
    Many thanks,
    Derek

    Hi,
As far as I know, We couldn't use Command Shell as you list to establish a Remote Desktop. You can use
mstsc /? command to view all mstsc.exe command parameter. We can use the command
mstsc [<connection file>] to establish a Remote Desktop Connection.
However, why did you want use command shell to establish a Remote Desktop? It would be more convenient using
mstsc [<connection file>] command to establish a Remote Desktop.
If you need further assistance on this particular issue or any other Windows related issue, let us know and we will be glad to assist you.

    Hi An Iphone user,
If you are having issues deleting a specific message from an iMessage conversation (not seeing the Trash icon), you may want to double-check that you are following the steps outlined in the following article:
How do I delete a message?
To delete a message, tap and hold the message bubble, then tap More.
Tap Delete All to delete all the messages. Or tap to select the messages you want to delete, then tap .
After you delete a message, you can recover it only by restoring from a backup.

  • I need windows 7 screensaver to activate after terminating a remote desktop session

I need windows 7 screensaver to activate after terminating a remote desktop session
Ok, so this one is slightly complex.
I have a monitor at work which needs to display company info via a screensaver set to scroll through a series of images. This is a pretty standard thing, but where my problem occurs is that the screensaver must be updated remotely each
day via Remote Desktop, and not by a local user sitting at the PC itself. This works on XP with a bit of hacking and playing with settings. But it won't work on W7.
Ok, so the XP setup first:
When terminating the remote session, on the XP machine the system looks here:
    C:\windows\system32\config\defaultprofile\administrator’s documents\administrator’s pictures
    OR
    C:\WINDOWS\system32\config\systemprofile\ administrator’s documents\administrator’s pictures
for the images to display during the screensaver, so I placed a shortcut to this folder (whichever one of the two it is on either of the two PCs i am doing this on; for some reason it isn't always the same path across all machines)
on the desktop and had the user place the images in there. I also do a small registry hack so that after a timeout of 60 seconds, the screensaver looked in this location, found the images, and displayed as you'd expect. It always looks here after a remote
session, and ignores the screensaver configured in the control panel UI, hance these stpes were necessary.
So, now the PCs are being upgraded to W7, but this isn't working. I think it's because on W7 the desktop isn't simply being locked when a remote session is started, the entire user is being logged off. Once the session is terminated,
the W7 PC sits at the login screen indefinitely and no screensaver ever displays.
Does anyone know a workaround here? Sorry for the overly complex explanation, and if it doesn't make sense I'd be happy to elaborate. Thanks.

    Hi,
Please see if the Screen saver timeout setting helps:

  • Issues installing Terminal CAL retail licenses

    Hi all
Installed Server 2012 R2 RDS and all of a sudden the RDS couldn't contact the RD Licensing Manager so after a bit of digging it was suggested I start off from scratch as the server isn't in production at the moment.
I did this but forgot to De-Activate the 10 User CAL's I have already activated before I removed the role, now after re adding the role I cannot activate the 10 User CAL's as they are already activated.
I recognise this is my own stupidity but is there anything I can do?  tried calling the clearing house however they just transferred me to support.
    I found this thread http://social.technet.microsoft.com/Forums/windowsserver/en-US/3a649fd0-f000-4c26-b034-24355a2123aa/issues-installing-terminal-cal-retail-licenses?forum=winserverTS
Should I try the Clearing house again?
    Any help appreciated
    Cheers
    Cheers Chris

    Hi Chris,
No, I am not an MS employee.
Do you have the original licensing paperwork for your RDS CAL purchase?  That is the most important thing.
Paid support is not going to be able to help if you wiped out the original licensing database.
If you have the original licensing paperwork for your purchased RDS CALs then there is no reason you should not be able to have the Clearinghouse help you re-install the RDS CALs fresh.
When speaking to them you do not want to ask any support-related questions.  You simply let them know that you installed and activated your RDS CALs, your server had a crash, and the data was lost.  Further explain that as a result you reinstalled
your server from scratch, you need to reinstall your RDS CALs, and you have proper documentation/paperwork/emails for your purchased RDS CALs.  You do not know your old licensing server id because the server crashed/had an issue and the data
    was lost.
They should be able to search for your old licensing server id based on the information (Company name, email, etc.) you entered in RD Licensing during activation if they feel they need it.  Even if they are unable to find your old licensing server id
that is not an excuse to prevent you from reinstalling your purchased RDS CALs.
If you have proper documentation of your RDS CAL purchase then ask (politely) to speak to a supervisor if needed if they refuse to help you reactivate them.  The key thing is you are only asking for their assistance reactivating the licenses that you
can prove you purchased.  If you do not have any proof of ownership then then there is not much they can do.

  • [Solved] How to remove a transparent window on the desktop

    I am using KDE 4.5.3-1.
    $uname -a

There appears to be a transparent window on my desktop, as shown by the shadow outline in this snapshot:

It appears with different wallpapers, and I can't seem to disable it. Right-clicking brings up the same context menu as outside the ghost window. Nothing in Desktop settings appear to control the appearance of this window. Restarting does not help.
I am not sure when it appeared...

  • Gnome Shell + Urxvt as a transparent terminal

Hello, I'm currently using Arch64 + Gnome Shell. Time ago I was using Openbox and I had managed to make a transparent terminal using URXVT via this thread -> https://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php?id=104868
If I remember correctly I had also managed to succeed in making a transparent terminal in Gnome 2 too. Unfortunately I have run into some problems when making the same in Gnome Shell. As you can see in the screenshot -> http://imageshack.us/photo/my-images/82 … urxvt.png/ , urxvt produces an ugly shadow and the biggest problem is that I'm not able to type on it.
My .Xdefaults file is the below:
    URxvt*transparent:true
    URxvt*font:xft:monospace:pixelsize=11
    URxvt*scrollBar:false
    URxvt*geometry:100x75+400+30
    URxvt*borderLess:true
    URxvt*foreground:#ffffff
Obvliously I'm missing something. Can you help me?
    Thanks in advance.

As far as I know, the problem is caused by MUTTER which doesn't draw shadows correctly.
It will be fixed in the next gnome release.
Try to google: mutter, transparency, gnome.

  • [SOLVED] lxde+openbox+urxvt = can't get a transparent terminal

I've been trying to get urxvt fully transparent and maximized every spare time i have after work. But now i'm just wasting time, since it won't work no matter what. My first attempt was to read the wiki: http://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Openbox (urxvt) that didn't work at all for me, then I resorted to a quick search on the forum, found various links: http://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php?id=64898 & http://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php?id=64459 with peeps having the same issues like I did, or almost. But alas that didn't work either.
I can move around the terminal urxvt window/border, but it's not transparent, and it's NOT covering my entire screen like it's suppose to.
    Any ideas?

Hello brisbin33, cheers for the prompt reply!
    are you running xcompmgr?
yes, I use it for shades around my borders
do you have composite enabled in xorg.conf?
I don't use xorg.conf at all, I rely completly on input hotplugging through xorg-server and HAL, btw I was under the impression xorg-server (input hotplugging) completly ignores your xorg.conf if it's set to use HAL as autodection?

EDIT: I'm using lxde on my asus eeepc900, here's something I just read on the archlinux wiki, so once more having an xorg.conf is useless if you rely on input-hotplugging right? (wiki claims xorg ignores the xorg.conf if it's relying completly on HAL)
    Intel drivers
The new Intel driver, xf86-video-intel, comes with compositing enabled by default. It's configured to use the newer EXA acceleration method, but the default build options can result in very slugish performance. In these cases, adding these options to the "Device" section of your /etc/X11/xorg.conf can improve the situation dramatically:
    Option "AccelMethod" "exa"
    Option "MigrationHeuristic" "greedy"
    Option "ExaNoComposite" "false"

  • Is there a fix for layers not displaying in window when desktop theme changes from default?

Every time I change my desktop theme from windows default I can't see the layers in the Adobe window.  Can anyone tell me where in options/preferences is the fix for this?

Hi Kelly,   what happened is that I changed by Win7 desktop theme to a Holiday based theme and when working in Adobe Photoshop part of CS6 collection I start a new project and the layers work panel shows me there is a back ground layer there but in the Adobe work space window the layer doesn’t display.  I tried change layer background colors but that didn’t work.   If I change the Wind 7 desktop theme back to default it works as expected.   Hope this helps.  J

  • Can't select layers with transparency

    Hello all!
Some things just happend and I have no idea why.
    1. I can no longer nudge grouped layers. Photoshop complains that it cannot nudge layers in a group. I'm pretty sure I have done this many times before, so I guess I'm doing something wrong here.
    2. When I try to move a layer selected in the layer panel (or selected via ctrl-alt-right click), a click on the layer selects the layer effect above instead.
It seems like there is some kind of click through enabled. If I click on a transparent part of the layer, the layer below get selected instead.
My first thought was that this had something to do with "Autoselect layer/group", but it's disabled.
This drives me crazy, how can I go back to normal mode, so I can click anywhere in a layer, transparent or not, and move the items in it etc?
    (I'm using Photoshop CS6.)
    Thanks in advance!

    1) Is a Selection active?
    What is the exact meassage?
    2) Could you please post a screenshot with the pertinent Panels visible?
    Boilerplate-text:
Are Photoshop and OS fully updated and have you performed the usual trouble-shooting routines (trashing prefs by keeping command-alt-shift/ctrl-alt-shift pressed while starting Photoshop after making sure all customized presets like Actions, Patterns, Brushes etc. have been saved and making a note of the Preferences you’ve changed, 3rd party plug-ins deactivation, system maintenance, cleaning caches, font validation, etc.)?

  • CS3 Photoshop Layers issues? Snow leorard??

Since recently loading new snow leopard  we are having issues in our Photoshops. Mostly noticed in the Layers pallete. Which will not allow us to right click to select and element on a layer. It moves the entire folder of above elements as a group. Some machines will not allow to right click on an element to find that individual layer any longer.
Any knowledege on issues with the compatibility with Photoshop cs3 and snow leopard 10.5?? Any help or solutions?
    thanks!!

Sorry, hindsight is 20/20, but I paid $170.00 for the system pgrade and personally I like it -- A LOT -- with the CS3 Photoshop exception. I personally have run into no other "bugs" or issues in my workflow, other than this one. I am hoping someone out there has run into the same issue and come up with a fix, which is why I posted.
Perhaps I am assuming too much here, but I don't believe this to be an "Apple" issue, but rather an "Adobe" issue. Why do all the other modules in CS3 load fine on install? Why does a trial of Photoshop CS4 load with no problem. It doesn't make sense to me that others are running CS3 Photoshop on Snow Leopard and I can't. Something is amiss here.
I have used Adobe products for almost 20 years and have been very loyal to them. I keep my programs as updated as possible and have purchased legal upgrades along the way for everything that I use, which is not pocket change to be sure! But, as of a couple of years ago (actually starting with CS3, which gave me issues on install many years ago in Tiger), I have had nothing but issues and problems. No other programs give me issues, which really sucks since Adobe is such a major part of my workflow.

  • Rxvt as part of desktop, forcing it to stay maximised

This isnt so much a major problem rather a niggle, I'm running openbox and have rxvt terminal as part of my desktop.
Whenever I use the shortcut to show my desktop it minimises the rxvt window too. As I have it set up not to appear in my tint2 panel the only way for me to maximise it again is to use the show desktop shortcut again.
Is there a way I can force rxvt to stay maximised?
    Thanks in advance

There are ways to exclude windows from the show desktop, by having them listed as dock apps or something.  But for an alternate, you could add a conditional action to the rc.xml after the show desktop action.  Something like the following (untested):
    <keybind key="W-d">
    <action name="ToggleShowDesktop"/>
    <action name="If">
<title>rxvt</title> <!-- this line may need work -->
    <then>
<action name="Maximize"/> <!-- this line may also need work -->
    </then>
    </action>
    </keybind>
