LCD starts clear, then goes fuzzy, but only for 1 user

I have a Westinghouse LCD which worked fine with an employee's Mac mini (X.3.9) until suddenly one day it was very fuzzy and distorted (illegible). I switched to a different user, and it was fine. Reset PRAM. On restart, the dock draws clear initially, then goes fuzzy just as the default background is drawn.
I tried various tricks with System Prefs, of course, and I tried trashing pref files too, but evidently didn't find the right one. (Permissions are fine, and DiskWarrior runs occasionally.) But I did find software called DisplayConfigX, and although I don't change any of its settings, just displaying the test pattern clears up the screen thereafter. Weird!
I was sure upgrading to OS X.4.6 would fix the problem, but it hasn't. It still only affects the one user, and it still starts up clear and sharp, then goes sour, and displaying the test pattern clears it up again.
What am I missing here? Please help me solve the mystery!
Cheers,
Gib
Mac mini Mac OS X (10.4.6) Westinghouse 17" monitor

have you tried removing login items in accounts
preferences? have you tried dragging the fonts
folder to the desktop and restarting the computer?
have you tried dragging the preferences folder to
the desktop and restarting the computer? these
things might be helpful to locate the problem.
Some good points there, thanks. Dumped login items (only standard iApp helpers), and deleted all fonts which FontBook identified as problematic; no joy. There are no user prefs which appear to be involved with the display; removing the user's pref folder sounds extreme, though I may try it.
I also uninstalled DisplayConfigX and found that rotating the image 90° (and back again) via System Prefs/Monitors also clears it up--until I fast user-switch and then switch back, at which time it's messed up again! Cheers,
Gib

  • [solved[X superlaggy after hd went out of space, but only for one user

So the netbook (eeepc 1101ha) went out of diskspace while running and froze. I freed up some space and restarted X, but it failed so I rebooted. Same story then. It either loads and becomes super slow or doesn't load at all. I use dwm wm which to my knowledge doesn't save to config files that might have been corrupted during the moment with no diskspace. Other wms have same problems too, but only for that user.

If that doesn't work you may try moving all the hidden stuff to a backup folder and start the X session again.
Something must be causing that and most probably it's some dot file stashed away inside one of those dot directories (you say new users work just fine so it's not a system problem).
Apart from this I'm out of ideas, once I had XFCE (I know its not the same) act really strange and the problem was related with some corrupted saved session file, once I deleted it everything was fine again.
Didn't work! Any other tips, ideas?

  • I want to install an app but only for one user on my imac with Lion

I have 2 users on my mac. I would like to install some apps (iwork) but only for one user and not the other user. How can I do this?

Setup of iWork in your wife's account should only occur the once.
Updates can be performed through your account and are usually performed via Software Update.
Messages should not be popping up in your wife's account if all the iWork updates have been performed.
Go to Software Update and download and install all the iWork updates.
Unless you keep OSX up-to-date, messages will continue to come up when your wife logs into her account.

  • Outlook asking for username and password, but only for some users

    Hello, I'm
in an Exchange Server 2013 client
    environment, two CAS servers
    and two Mailbox.
Some users are having trouble in Outlook 2007
    and 2012, which is directly
requesting the user name and password, not all,
    just some.
    The Active Directory is ok,
    DNS and also own Exchange
servers apparently do not see errors.
Has anyone here ever experienced this?
How can I solve this problem?
As this happens only to some users
and the vast majority have no problems, so
    difficult to find the cause.
    Thank you!
    Ivanildo Teixeira Galvão

    Hi Ivanildo,
From your description, only some users have an issue that Outlook prompts for username and password. In your case, I recommend you compare the normal and problematic Outlook settings. Here is the Outlook settings in my environment for your reference:
    1. "Always prompt for logon credentials" isn't checked.
    2. Logon network security using Negotiate Authentication.
    3. "Connect to Microsoft Exchange using HTTP" is checked.
    4. Use the NTLM Authentication when connecting to my proxy server for Exchange.
Hope this can be helpful to you.

  • ACD Display jittery, fuzzy but only in my user account

    Hi all,
I have a strange problem that started last Monday. My Apple Cinema Display has developed a slight jitter (a few times a minute) and the text has become slightly fuzzy in portions of the screen. I thought it was the display so put another one on here (also an Apple Cinema Display 23") but it has the same problem. I then thought that perhaps it is the graphics card that is causing the issue but I don't think so because I logged into a separate user account and the display is as crisp and sharp as ever without any jitters. I then tried to dump the display preferences from my user account but the problem persists.
I currently have Pantone Huey calibrating my monitor. In case this was the cause, I uninstalled everything "Huey-related" from my machine and trashed it, but the problem STILL persisted. Is there anywhere else I can look or anything else I can try? It is definitely something to do with my user account. Thanks in advance for your assistance:)
My friend, may God always shine a rainbow on your path as you walk along life's trails:)

FIXED! I wish I had come to these forums muuuuuch earlier:) I just saw another thread about the display moving along with the mouse (which was also a symptom I had). The answer was to press Command-Option-8 once or twice because I had the "Zoom" on. Quoted from the other thread: It is controlled in "Seeing" in "Universal Access" system preference, and by Control-Scrollwheel.
    THANKS:)))

  • Safari 3.1.2 crashes on startup, but only for one user account

This is weird: If I'm logged in as one user and launch Safari, it strugggles and grinds the disk for a long time, brings my start page up partway, then crashes. If I'm logged in as another user on the same machine, Safari launches in mere seconds and works fine. I have tried re-installing Safari from scratch, and have also deleted the Library/Safari folder, all to no avail. There is clearly something about this particular user account that's messed up, but I don't know what.
This is on an 1-GHz iBook G4 running OSX 10.4.11. Safari used to work fine on this user account as well, and I don't know what might have changed.

First, have you installed any programs in that particular user account that are intended to enhance Safari or otherwise might influence internet/browsing activity? If so, uninstall those programs using their installers (which often have an uninstall option) or an included uninstaller if applicable.
If you don't have any such programs installed, or that doesn't fix the problem: Make sure you're logged into the account where Safari is having problems, make sure Safari is quit, and then open that user's home folder (indicated in a Finder window sidebar by the little house icon with the username) and open the Library folder inside it, then the Preferences window inside that.
(In other words navigate to \~/Library/Preferences, where "~" is the user's home folder.)
Locate the "com.apple.Safari.plist" file in that preferences folder and drag it to the trash.
Launch Safari and check to see if it's any better now.

  • Flash Pop-Ups Showing Blank... but only for one user! OS X

    Hello,
I am absolutely at my wits end with this one.  Here are my specs
    My Player Version: MAC 10,1,53,64
Operating System: Mac OS 10.6.3 (Snow Leopard)
Browsers: Safari 5.0, Firefox, Chrome -- same error on all browsers
About a month ago, I noticed some strange behavior with Flash on certain sites -- namely that when I hovered over something that would create a flash pop-up (like the graphs in Google Analytics), the box would pop-up, but it would be empty -- no text, just the blank colored box.  Movies played fine, other aspects of Flash played fine, just the pop-ups were broken.  This was cross-browser --- didn't matter if I used Safari, Firefox or Chrome -- same broken pop-ups.  Since then, I've noticed other things that don't work -- like the Adobe Privacy Settings box! The checkboxes are visible in the settings box, but no text!
As it keeps me from using Google Analytics and other important online apps, this has made me very sad.
What's strange, though, is that it only seems to affect the main user account on my Mac -- when I try to access these sites with my Guest account, everything works perfectly. Baffling.
Here is what I've done to try to troubleshoot it:
Used the Adobe Uninstaller  to Uninstall Flash - no errors
    Repaired permissions
Installed a fresh copy of Flash Player 10.1 - no errors
I've done this several times, trying restarts and other refreshes in between -- doesn't fix it
I went on a hunt for everything named Macromedia and Flash in my Account and trashed it.  Uninstalled Flash CS4. Uninstalled Adobe Air.  Used the Adobe Uninstaller again. Repaired permissions again. Restarted again. Reinstalled Flash Player again.
    No dice.
I have no idea what to do next. This is driving me crazy. Please, someone, HELP!

    Hi NorwichUK,
    welcome to this fourm
... hmm, the iM version before iM5 did make folders instead of "solid files"/packages....

  • Error 906 when getting InitialContext (but only for some users)

I currently have an application where I'm attempting SSO. I'm obtaining the user's credentials using JAAS and then querying ADS with JNDI. All of our Java code is hosted through WebLogic 8.1. If I run the WebLogic process as a certain user, I can successfully authenticate and query ADS. However, if I run WebLogic as another ADS user, I get "Identifier doesn't match expected value (906)". This error occurs at the point that I attempt to obtain InitialContext (which means the intial authentication works). Anyway, these ADS users are in the exact same ADS group, and as far as I can tell, they have the same permissions. Is there something I'm missing? Thanks...
Also, I have debug=true in my jaas.conf, but it only spits out basic debug information. Is there some way I can get full debugging?
    Terence

I should probably let you know that I'm using WebLogic's JRockit 1.4.2_05

every time I try to add an event, I get the spinning wheel.
HOWEVER there are two users on this computer - when logged into the other account, ical works fine.
I have tried repairing permissions, deleting ical preferences, clearing out calendars, deleting sync services folder, even importing the database from the ical in the functioning user account.
all suggestions are extremely welcome at this point!
    thanks very much

  • Mail crashing constantly in Leopard but only for one user

Has anyone else seen this problem? Leopard installed correctly and seems to run fine on a G4 Powerbook BUT Mail3.0 crashes constantly. Cannot open or delete a message. Simply opening and then quitting causes a crash. However, I can still receive and send mail. Here is the uncaught exception thrown by Mail:
    * Terminating app due to uncaught exception 'NSInternalInconsistencyException', reason: 'trying to set a non-ToDo MailboxUid for a ToDo. The MailboxUid for a ToDo must be a ToDosMailboxUid'
Permissions repaired. File ownership checked. Reloaded Leopard with Archive&Restore. Nothing seems to help. However, other logins on the same Powerbook dont have any problems. Mail works fine for those IDs.
Has anyone got a solution or do I have to wait for 10.5.1 for some relief?
    Thanks......

Have you tried synchronizing the mailbox? (The pop-up menu accessed by the little cog icon in the lower left corner of the Mail window, or the Mailbox menu)
How about taking the Mail account off line and then reconnecting it?
Do you have lots of messages in this Inbox? Moving old email to an archive "On My Mac" so they're removed from the dot-Mac server reduces the amount of synchronization that has to be done and thus less risk of encountering a corrupt message file.
Are there lots of attachments to messages? Sometimes a corrupt attachment can cause a problem.
    Just some ideas.

  • Excel file very slow to save - but only for one user! Why?

    The problem ...
I have an excel spreadsheet that I share with my partner, i.e. another user on my Mac.  The file works just fine for me, but is very slow to save when my partner uses it.  Save time for me is about 3 seconds, for my partner about 45 seconds.  The problem only seems to be with this one file, and the slow save time is driving her nuts!  (I'm not able to upload the file as it contains confidential info).
The file is about 225kB with about 6 worksheets and some macros.  It’s stored in a folder below the standard OSX ‘shared’ folder.  Both users have identical permissions on these folders and this file.
What have I tried already?  Re-saving the file in a different place, renaming it, re-creating it by copying the contents to a blank file, repairing permissions on my partner’s user account, copying excel .plist files from my user to hers, deleting her .plist file & creating a new one.  None of these have worked.
System details ...  2.8GHz I5 iMac (late 2010 vintage), 8GB memory, OSX 10.6.8 (Snow Leopard).  Excel for Mac 2011 v14.2.3 (auto updates on & all installed I believe)
Any suggestions would be gratefully received.

    On the problem Mac...
Open Console in Utilities & see if there are any clues or repeating messages when this happens.

  • Binding AD to OD but only for certain users.

We have a small (winXP) computerlab in an educational facility. In order to ensure that the computers are locked down they are all part of a Domain managed by a Win2003 AD server. I have done quite a few Registry Hacks to the Hive to make sure the users can't install software, or even see any drive's except, floppies, optical drives and zips. Our main service here is e-mail, and we are running an X-serve with all of the users in OpenLDAP (OD). We have quite a few users that we either don't need to be in our LDAP directory, or for security reasons shouldn't be, simply because they take a class for a semester and we never see them again. Some might say, well then just create a general account that the "outside" users can use and be done with it. The problem with that is, then all of the "outside" users see or can access the same "Home" drive. I suppose this wouldn't be a problem as long as they were notified that they could be giving access to their files to other users unless they used another storage mechanism (thumb drive, cd, outside FTP, etc.)
I was also curious what people's experience with using a hacked ntuser.dat to lockdown xp boxes was. I know it's possible, since that seems to be functionality built in. Also if anyone has had problems with multiple users using the same exact ntuser.dat file.

I figured it out on my own. I'd forgotten that my mother changed the account email addy, and I was changing it to the current one, which did nothing, as the songs were purchased on a second accout. Thanks anyway to anyone who considered rplying =)

About receiving my credit card being debited for Free App Store Application downloads,
It should be within a few days, but it might vary a bit by bank/provider :
I am in India, if the bank don't refunds , what to do?
Rajagopal.pngr :-  It is only a holding charge, it is not a permanent charge. If it isn't refunded within a few days or so (and it quite possibly won't be over a weekend) then you can query the charge with Apple.

  • HP start up screen goes fuzzy

Hi guys, a few days ago my HP desktop computer started turning itself off while I was in the middle of using it. Now this morning when I turn on the computer the blue HP start up screen goes fuzzy and then it then the screen shows goes crazy and shows all different colours (links to pictures below). I have taken my computer apart and vacuumed the dust and put it back together. I have not installed anything in the last few weeks so I don't think it's a software problem. I have tried it with another screen and it does the same thing so it is not the screen.
    Images of what's happening:

    http://s7.postimage.org/douswzvrf/image.jpg
If anyone has experienced this or can give me advice on what to try, I would appreciate it greatly.

    Hello,
So from what I understand you’re getting very odd colors and graphics on your monitor, which I did look at the pictures and I appreciate you posting them
Well since you have already tried a 2nd monitor and getting the same response it could possibly be an issue with your graphics card or a bad video driver. Can you provide me the make and model of your computer so I can further investigate the issue.
Please respond when you’re able to get that information.
    Thanks

A number of extensions can cause that problem, you'll need to do a little troubleshooting to find out which extension is causing that to happen for you.
